Date: Fri, 21 Aug 2020 17:47:42 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 162 I was up way before the alarm and fuck it was an ugly wet day and I decided to just go for a run. Cole was up and said let's go and I bet JJ doesn't show. I smiled and said that a bet and glad to see you coming back. I laughed when we ran by JJ's house and he screamed, hey wait up. I looked at Cole and smiled. Once again the run was fun but I was drenched when we finished as was everyone else. Once at home, I grabbed a coffee and jumped into a very hot shower. I dressed in jeans and a tee and went down stairs and had more coffee and toast. Cole came down and we left for school. On the way I called Latrobe and left a message that I needed a favor. A tee time at the Field Club anytime Saturday. Cole laughed and I said dude, that was a big ask, so I used a big weapon, that won't happen a lot. Cole said, he was sorry he asked. I said I'm asking the Giant Eagle guy, so it's work. Then I said, I'm working out after school, then your ass is mine for a few hours, clear you schedule. He shrugged and said ok. It was a normal school day and I couldn't wait till we were finished. After lunch, walking to class someone bumped into me and sure enough it was Jan. She smiled and said so where are the break lights? Jan, every time you do that there is a reason, what do you want? She whispered in my ear that sexy jock who took my cherry to fucking ask me to the Junior Prom. I put my arms around her and said, Jan would you please give me the honor of being my date to the fucking Prom? She burst out laughing and said well only if there is a motel room involved. I said, well we can talk about that and we went our separate ways to class. At study hall I signed out and went for the workout. It was intense and sweaty and Coach was watching, I showered and went to find Cole. He was leaning against the car talking on the phone. As I approached he asked if I had heard about Saturday. I was a little pissed and said, not yet, get your ass in the car. Cole just looked at me for a second and got in the car. Before we were out of the parking lot he asked, MJ are you mad at me? Cole, I have a lot on my mind and golf on Saturday wasn't in the plans. MJ, I didn't think it would be complicated? Cole, it shouldn't be yet for some reason it is. It will be fine. Cole, a while back you asked about visiting the construction site and once again I need to pick something up so, I figured I would take you a long. He said, damn I thought it was about the bet this morning. We parked the car and made our way to the construction trailer. I introduced Cole to Allen and we grabbed hard hats and started looking around. Almost every worker said hello and many called me Mike. Cole was just looking around and taking things in. I noticed a number of pallets loaded with Steel sheeting and went over to look. It was the siding for the first floor and some of it was already weathered and a rusty reddish color. Cole asked, so what's that rusty stuff? I said siding for the first floor. MJ, it already needs cleaned. I laughed and said, nope that's the look. The second floor will me a brushed aluminum and the third floor will be tinted glass. MJ, why all the different looks? I said, I'll tell you in the car. We walked around the first floor and I saw steps so I went upstairs. Cole said the view is fantastic will there be windows? I said a three foot strip starting at waist high. I was so excited, things were going so well and with the summer close, things should fly. We went back to the trailer and I got three copies of the final steel placement pictures and returned the hard hats. As we were leaving Allen yelled, MIKE CATCH. He tossed me a box. I handed Cole the drawings and opened the box and just stood there with my mouth open. It was a burgundy and orange hard hat with MJS Enterprises logo and on the back was a small Hokie bird. Then Allen said, Mike the crew pitched in about ten cents each but every guy contributed, this project and how we are treated is special to all of us. Cole and I started towards the car and I was still wearing the hat when Jordan and Jodie pulled up. We stopped and chatted and I asked about business and they said booming and that they be moving out June 1st and pretended I knew. They said Mason was fantastic as he already had a tenant for the Spec building in town. Jodie asked, so Mike will you consider us for your third building? I said absolutely in fact do you want to design a marina for this location? They both said sure at the same time. I said look guys you didn't get the second building as you were way too busy and I was thrilled as the money was rolling in for both of us. Then Jodie asked, would it help our relationship if we parted ways with Carrie? I simply walked away. Cole immediately said, MJ answerer them they might do something you don't want? I stopped turned around and yelled, JODIE, THAT'S NOT NECESSARY. Cole just laughed and said, well that didn't help much. I shrugged and said well I just punted. We got in the car and I said, I need to stop at the mall then how about dinner at the Tavern? He said, that works as I'm starving. On the way we talked about the building and Carnegie, Hall, Pitcaren and Ford. I said you will learn all about that in AP history next year. At the mall it was right to the frame shop. I showed him the pictures and he said same frame? I said yup and he said they will be ready for tomorrow about this time, I bought a lot of that material as you seem like a steady customer. I said thanks and we drove to the Tavern. There we were greeted like the prodigal son. We both ordered iced tea and beer came, I had a Ruben and fries and Cole a chicken sandwich and 6 wings. I decided to let Cole off the hook about golf and said dude, we have a 7:05 tee time at the Field Club, please make sure Liam is on time. I'm guessing that's too early for the Giant Eagle guy but I'm going to ask. Cole simply said thanks, MJ I owe you. We finished dinner and drove home. At home, I went right to my room and called Jan. She answered and I asked if she had plans tomorrow night? She said nothing at all. I said how about game one of the hockey finals? She said damn, that would be great. I said, tell Jack to get a date or bring your dad along and it will be dinner at the Igloo Club. She said, hold on an second. When she came back she said Jack is in and he will either have a date or rent one. I laughed and said I'll pick you guys up at 5:00. I found dad and asked for the hockey tickets for tomorrow and he said he was just about to give them to the Giant Eagle guy and I said I was going to ask him to play golf but it's early Sat morning. He said, I assume it's the Igloo club as well? I said please. Mike, why early golf and where? I needed to pull strings so Cole could play the Field Club. Dad ask him about that, he is excited. Dad said, thanks and I'm on it and so will Jay. Mike, Megan has hearings scheduled next week, so she might be occupied. I said, please make sure Cole knows about that and soon would be nice. My schedule was almost cleared so I called the Giant Eagle offices and sure enough Sam was still in. When he got on the line, I said, I know it's late and you are busy but would you like to play the Field Club early Saturday. He said Mike, I have meetings all morning but thanks. I said no problem but how about game 2 hockey tickets? He said damn that would be great. I said have someone contact dad and he will get you 4 tickets. I hung up thinking I need a 4th for golf. This was getting to be a pain in the ass. I was heavy into interview prep and then grabbed my English paper and read that. Damn, it all made sense again and my public persona was developing again. I get so busy doing things i don't take the time to remember what drives me, but damn it is always there. Then I opened the op-Ed email and sent it to dad's printer. I went down and dad was reading it. I waited till he finished and he said Mike your PR guys need a raise. They have you down pat. He handed me the single page and said get your own damn printer. I sat at the kitchen table with an iced tea and simply read the document. It hit every bullet point and in a firm and polite manner. The last part was; "Student athletes have first amendment rights and perhaps they should start to exercise those rights in such a way as to sent the message that their personal lives are not for public consumption. After reading the high school section I have to wonder if editors still require reporters to verify what they report. It was signed Michael J. Simmons, Jr. a committed Hokie. I sent an email to the Major that said good as written. Then I sent it in an email to Coach B. With all that done I called Tim and we discussed the interview and he said everyone was sure I would be ready and I said, I'm going to bring show and tell and that there would be rules about when items could be showed. He said that both him and Brian would be there. I asked about the divorce with the firm and he said, one more sticking point and they were hoping I could make an announcement about a new legal firm joining MJS Enterprises. I said, awesome and we hung up. I called the Major and when he answered, I said Jim I need a favor? He laughed and asked, ok what? I will have show and tell items but I want it understood that they get shown if and when I want. Also, they need to be ready to show the picture with the flag. He said well all that's easy. Well I also want to understand how they are raising money for the Foundation? Mike, Tim is all over that and they were given a noon tomorrow deadline. I laughed and said an hour might not be long enough. He said, trust me it will be for me, you uncensored for an hour worries me. Jim, trust me I got this. I hung up and spent the rest of the night on the Clancy book. As I was getting ready for bed Cole appeared and thanked me again for Saturday and I assured him it was fine. Once he went to his room, I found dad and said goodnight. I jumped into bed and was wide awake and my mind was going a 100 miles an hour. Sleep came eventually and so did the alarm clock. The three of us ran and it was off to school, I realized there were three weeks to go and I needed to talk with JJ about a number of things. At lunch I asked JJ if he wanted to play golf Saturday at the crack of dawn? He laughed and asked what public course? I said the Field Club. He said you are amazing. I said Cole has a working round with his caddy and you and I need to have a long talk. He said, well after you chat with Coach B I figured that was coming. JJ if it was really important it would have happened by now. Besides if you play, I can deduct this mess on Saturday, as you are a director. Mike, it's cool and I want to see Cole serious about golf and how he gets ready. It was a quick workout again with the coach watching, I was starting to find that strange. I went right to the car and drove home. It was right to the shower and just threw myself on the bed figuring out what to wear. It is always an important thing for me but more so today. After a lot of thought it was khaki pants and an Oakmont golf shirt and dockers with no socks. There was no time to question this and I pulled into Jan's driveway right on time. I knock on the door and Jan answered saying Jack's date will be here in a minute, as will he. Jack appeared and I laughed as we were dressed alike if you removed the Oakmont logo. We shook hands and as that was happening the doorbell rang and Jack opened the door and in walked Riley. We looked at each other and laughed. Jack said, so you two know each other. I said let's go traffic will be a mess and I'm hungry. As it turned out there was not much traffic and with the VIP parking it was a short trip. Inside we went right to the Igloo Club and we were seated at the same table in the back. I like that as it gave me a perfect view of the room. We ordered drinks and Jack had a beer and Riley a white wine and Jan and I had iced tea. We were chatting and I was not letting Riley or Jack off the hook by asking. Jan asked, so this is how you watch the hockey game. I laughed and said nope 4 rows from the ice at the red line, does nicely. Jack said, holy shit is there no end to the perks? I said Jack, these are not perks, someone worked their ass off, but relax they are a tax deduction. He laughed and said always the business man. Riley laughed and said watch this. Just then the Mayor appeared. I just shook my head and made introductions. He said Mike, we really need to talk. I said Pete what do you need? He said a heads up on announcements you will make on TV Sunday. I said, Mr. Mayor there are no major announcements that you are unaware of. He said Mike, there has to be something as I can't get an hour on that program. What can I say, it wasn't me that requested an hour. However you are correct we do need to talk about staying out of the way of the start on building 2. That boost in the economy and all those happy Union people will help your run for Harrisburg or not, depending. He shook his head and I said, enjoy the game. Riley laughed and Mr. Simmons, do you think he will ever learn? Before I could answer Jack said what the hell? Riley laughed and said, well I work for Mike. I looked at Riley and said, this time he will react and I'll say something nice on Sunday but he knows he can't get in the way, I have too much union support and he needs that. The waiter came and we ordered. There was another round of drinks. Before the food came three people came over to chat and all were dispatched by referring them to people at the company. Once the food came it was quiet and after two iced teas, I went to the men's room and naturally the Mayor followed me. He said, look you pain in the ass, if you want cooperation you need to start being civil and giving me a heads up. I said, fine I'm on TV Sunday with more than one announcement. Piss me off again and your won't have enough union support to be elected Mayor let along Governor. Now, please go and enjoy the game. Back at the table I said guys, it's time we find our seats. Jack and I were in the middle with the girls on the ends. I asked him if he was having fun? He laughed and said, well it is amusing. Then he quietly said, I'm sorry about Riley. I laughed and said, it's cool your both adults and I don't care. It was an exciting first period and Jan and I chatted and just enjoyed the game. In watching Riley and Jack I thought they were friendly yet there didn't seem to be a romantic connection. Then again how could there be as he hasn't been home in a long time, yet they were the same edge. I asked Jan, so when did you move to the current house and she said the year Jack went to Annapolis. The period ended and we went back to the club and ordered drinks and snacks. Almost immediately the "visits" started first it was a VP from the Giant Eagle, saying he would be working with us on the Advantage Card thing and I suggested he get to know Dillon, there was a Real Estate guy and he was directed to Mason. Then the lobbyists, I me the other night at the Duquesne Club, came over and we chatted and I actually introduced everyone and I asked that he contact Riley and set up a meeting. He said fine and we finished our drinks and went back to our seats. Jack asked about the lobbyists and I said, I don't know for some reason I like him and he has connections up the ass. Then he asked, so does this line of people happen all the time? I said yes and that's one of the reasons I hang out in places like that bar in Greentree. The night continued and it was a close and exciting game but the Penguins lost 5-4, but it had a long way to go yet. On the drive home Jan was upfront with me and Jack and Riley were chatting in the back. Jan kept reaching for my hand and finally stopped. Back at Jan's house Jack and Jan got drinks and while that was going on, Riley said Mike, Jack and I were intense in High School but we drifted apart when he went off to salute. I laughed and said, thanks but I really didn't need to know. I finished my beer and decided it was time to go so Jan walked me to the car and we were barely out the door and she stopped and we were actually making out. I gave her a hug and said, bump into me in school tomorrow and she laughed and I drove home. At home I found dad in his office and stuck my head in and he waved me in. We chatted about the game and I told him I had two fights with the Mayor. Dad said Mike, you need to get along with him. I said, it's ok I'll be nice to him on Sunday. Dad simply laughed and I asked about Cole and he said, I don't know he is involved with something, but he is content so I'm not involved. I said goodnight and went upstairs and knock on Cole's door and he said, damn your late, are we running in the morning and I said sure. He said goodnight and I was more than ready to accept that. I simply tossed my clothes on the floor and jumped into bed. It was the morning run and JJ continued to join us. Cole was in a good mood and again I wasn't asking any questions. It was a normal day until AP History and Carrie pulled me aside and said, thanks for the marina job, Jodie is excited. I said your welcome and I started to walk away and she grasped my arm and said, so we are really done? I just stared at her and finally walked away. Then she screamed, WELL IT DOESN'T MATTER AS IM DONE WITH YOU. I turn around and went up to her and quietly said, Carrie Anne, I stopped giving a fuck about what you think weeks ago. Enjoy your hoop star's cock and leave me alone. She stepped back and tried to slap my face and i simply avoided the hit and everyone laughed. She spent all of History class staring at me and I remained focused and participated in a class discussion. Again she was invited to stay after class and talk with the teacher. Once again I went and worked out and once again Coach was watching. After a shower, I knocked on his office door and asked, so is there a problem with my work outs? He said, I'm just doing my job, which includes making sure no one gets hurt and your workouts get more intense every day. What's going on? Coach, I get like this but usually it's a couple of weeks before camp. I'm gaining weight and need to firm up. I am intensely focused on everything and getting ready for that hour long TV interview. Then he said, I thought things were settled with you and Carrie? I said they are and it's over. He laughed and asked, so why the public fight in the hall today? I said, just cementing the decision, I guess. Then coach said, Mike you are so good with everything but the woman in your life, figure it out. I had nothing to say so I said thanks and headed for my car. At home, I was sitting in the kitchen and my phone rang and it was a number I did not know sam I answered with, "This is Mike" the caller replied with Mr. Simmons this is the PG calling to verify an op-Ed piece you would like in Sunday's paper. I smiled and replied, yes I sent you an opinion piece. There were a couple of questions to make sure I submitted it and I was told it would indeed be in the paper. I thanked him and went looking for dinner. Damn, I found Chicken Parmigiana and a salad. It was just about reheated when Cole came in and was in an obvious great mood. I asked dude, what's up? He said my new clubs arrived and that are awesome. They are perfect from the first shot. So Cole you are going to play in a tournament in less than a week with new clubs? He said absolutely these are pretty much like my old set but with different shafts and they work. I said well Saturday will give you a good indication. Oh, make sure Liam is on time and JJ will be playing. Just then dad came in and handed me an envelope and I set it aside and said thanks. I finished eating and said, damn I need to go to the mall. I'll see you guys later. At the mall I went straight to the framing shop and apologized for not being there yesterday. I looked at the pictures in their new home and was thrilled. At home I went right into dad's office and handed him the picture all wrapped up. He got a big smile and looked around the room, got up and removed a picture from the wall and hung up the building picture. I handed him the other picture and said, dad for the lobby at the office. I got a hug and he said thanks and I went to my room with the remaining picture. I looked around and there was a place above my desk where Carrie once hung and put the picture there. That left 3 pictures, Jim and I with the metal, me and AP and now the building. I decided, I need a picture of me and JJ and me and Cole. I opened the package that dad had given me and it was the financials for the Advantage Card and I looked at the numbers and thought this is great and as the company grows and adds more perks it will be better. There were also financials for Technology and damn we were doing good. My weakest thing was the Foundation so I called Tim and we talked for an hour about that and what needed done and that we needed to have a directors meeting and make some decisions and confirm shit you have done. Then he said Brian and I both will be there and you can announce that you will be leaving you current law firm and all future legal issues will be handled by Three Rivers Legal Services and that is effective July 1, 1991. I asked for details and he said, early next week but this is a done deal and a working draft has been signed by our old firm. I said, damn and hour might not be enough. So what are the details on the money? Mike the station is guaranteeing 50k and will be asking for pledges throughout the program. I said, Tim this will not be a Jerry Lewis like thing. Corporate money only and with a definite link to volunteer fire companies and emergency responders. If they don't like that, I'll wave the money side of this. He said Mike, I was hoping you would say that. Tim just ask and don't delay waiting for my reaction. With that done I called Jan and we talked about the game and how much fun she had watching me deal with people. I asked about Jack and what his story was? She said well we are all asking the same question. He doesn't want to do what the Marines want and run their damn flight school, he is already a Major and isn't sure he wants more. Now there is apparently a PR thing at the Capital and he absolutely hates those. The only good thing about that is he will get in a jet and fly there. Jan, I have a very early thing Saturday morning but would you like to do something Friday? She said sure and I said, think of something that requires clothes and hopefully, we will bump into each other tomorrow in school. Keep in mind, I'm working out after school. I said good night and hung up. I picked up the Clancy book and started to read and then simply pulled the covers up and fell asleep. Comments are encouraged as this is my first story.
