Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2021 12:52:33 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 261 I was blasted awake by a ringing phone and a pounding on the door. I ignored the phone, grappled a pair of shorts and opened the door and screamed, WHAT THE FUCK. Tim just stood there laughing. I said, sorry please come in. What's so important that you drove here? Mike, I have the agreement with Hillgrove and you need to sign and approve it. I asked if he wanted coffee and he said sure. Once the coffee was on Tim handed me a folder and I looked at it and asked, what's so complicated that it takes 5 fucking pages? Tim said well you escaped yesterday before it was settled and if you think you and Hillgrove are oil and water you should see Maggie and him. Tim is there any chance this will work out? It simply can't blow up in the middle of things. Look Mike, his role in all this is in the early phase and most likely the easiest. I got each of us a coffee and started to read. The good news was that the compensation package was such that if he didn't perform he didn't get paid. There were limits on expenses and they had to be reviewed by Maggie. I laughed as it actually in writing that every Friday was casual day. He had 10 days to submit a business plan and three weeks to hire a staff of three. The existing 2 space planners were to be kept on and he couldn't fire or lay them off without HR approval. I almost flipped when I saw monthly meetings meddle to be scheduled with me. It went on and on. I could fire him with cause and he would sign a non-compete and he was required to give 90 days notice to resign. There was a lot of other little shit and Tim was correct as Maggie's fingerprints were all over this. I finished reading and asked Tim for a pen and said great job. I signed it MICHAEL JAMES SIMMONS, JR. and handed it to Tim. He looked at the signature and said damn that is so big it could have taken another page. I laughed and said simply making the same point John Hancock was making. Tim said Mike, that is so fucking far over his head he won't even notice. We talked for a while and Tim said, sorry to bother you on football game day. Except for the way you answered the door you were not as difficult as I was told to expect. Tim, don't over stay your welcome and we both laughed. As Tim was leaving I said don't forget the drug test and Tim said shit. Tim give me those papers back for a second and in the smallest block letters I could print I wrote subject to a passed drug test. Handing the folder back to Tim I said, it's always the small print. Tim shook his head and went about his day. Back in seclusion, I had another cup of coffee and read the paper avoiding anything about the game. Next I grabbed my Walkman and went for a short run, just to burn off some energy. I absolutely hate these game days when there was no school. It's just hard to fill a day doing nothing. JJ called asking if I wanted company and when I said nope he was relieved. Then he said MJ, I bet we win by 21. I said damn that a bet as I don't think there will be 21 points scored in the game. I'm thinking we win in a tight one like 10 or 14 to nothing. I asked if he wanted picked up at 5:00 and he said sure as parking is a bitch at the Tavern. We hung up and I went looking for something to keep my mind off the game and remembered the CMU assignment and started on that. I got totally into it and was working away what my phone rand and I saw it was Cole. I answered with, what's up Pro? He said there is lunch for two on your stoop and I'm free if you can behave yourself. I said sure you are always welcome. I opened the door and there stood Cole in is high school golf attire. Cole's, how was your first match? MJ, it was crazy as my opponent, their best golfer, was trying to disrupt my game. First he stood behind me and move when I started my downswing, then he tried coughing. After the third time I told him dude, I pay in big time events in front of tens of thousand people and if you think any of the shit you are doing will bother me, think again. I shot 34 and he shot 40, not that bad but we won the match. I told our coach and he said good job and he had a chat with the other coach and I got an apology. So MJ, what you doing to take your mind off the game? I said CMU math. Cole shook his head and bit into his hoagie. Mine was a chicken salad. We chatted for a while and he went on his way and I went back to math. At 4:00 I started to get ready I took a long shower and it was khakis and a polo shirt and dockers and no socks. The Walkman was back on and I selected a Nirvana tape put the ear buds in and turned it up. Then I went outside with an iced tea and just chilled out. Having wasted the entire day it was time for me to pick JJ up. I pulled into the driveway and the Major was there with JJ. We both got hugs and were told to have a great game. We had parking in the South lot and went into the cafeteria. There were burgers, salads and fries. I just laughed as it was typical school food. But that was good as it set the tone. I was pleased to see it was a relaxed group and we didn't have a 2+ hour buss ride. As usual I was to the locker room before most of the team. At my locker I stripped put a jock strap on, thigh and hip pads. Put my game pants and shoes on and went to the field. I just stood there taking it all in and enjoying the quiet for the last time tonight. Then from nowhere JJ appeared dress just like me and he put his are around me and said bro we have this. We sat on the bench talking. What we didn't know was that the network people were filming this somewhat special setting. It was a damn good thing we didn't kiss. Back inside I saw Jim but Wyatt wasn't around. I asked about that and Adam pointed to the toilet. I went inside and found him puking his dinner into the toilet. When he finished, I tossed him a towel and asked, are you up for this? He smiled and said now I am and I was worried that wouldn't be happening. I do that before every game, let's go and get this done. I just shook my head and finished dressing. Now it was time for warmups and we wandered onto the field in no particular order. We found our coaches and I went on defense and Todd took my place on offense. JJ was also on defense and that sent me a message that coaches was concentrating on defense. I noticed that the freshman hadn't missed a field goal and he was dead on from 40 out. It was time to turn the field over for the band and right at 7:10 we went back inside. The band was doing their pregame show which would end with the Anthem. Coach only said we've done all the work, just get it done. I stood up and said guys coach is right we have done all the work, what's left is for us to take care of business, play hard, tough and fair. Keep your cool and simply kick ass. ONE FOR ALL and the team screamed ALL FOR ONE. With the captains leading the way we all stood inside and as soon as the band was finished we exploded onto the field ran through the cheerleader line and the place went nuts. We gathered together and the 5 of us started with the official for the coin toss and Coach yelled defer, defense first. We all shook hands at mid field and the visiting called heads and it was tails. We did as instructed and I was thinking first and 10 on the 20. Sure enough the kid kicked it a couple of yards into the end zone. They broke the huddle for the first play and the QB was under center and I was sure it was a run and Chad and I changed sided and sure enough the run now went my way and it went off their right end for 1 yard. We huddled up and JJ said watch for their trap play and I bet they go for broke first time. Chad and I stayed on our assigned side and JJ cheated to his left and sure enough the lineup indicated they would run the play. They faked the hand off and as designed we all bit and then there was a lob pass to their right and JJ looked like the intended receiver and he ran 79 yards for an easy TD and the place went totally nuts. Wyatt held and his buddy kicked the extra point and we were up 7-0. We were up by a score and still on defense. This time they just tried to run it down our throats but there was a holding call that nullified a 9 yard gain and we held. JJ fair caught the punt and we had the ball on the 27 yard line. It wasn't a good start and we ran twice and I gained a total of 6 yards and Jim under threw a receiver and we punted. Going 4 and out was met with a quiet stadium. Back on defense it was becoming a slug fest and it was the same a first down or two and a punt and the same with us. We were about halfway through the second quarter when Jim threw another incomplete and this time he went to a knee holding his shoulder. Coach and the medical people ran onto the field and Jim stood up, I went over and I heard Jim tell coach, I just don't have it tonight. He left the field massaging and stretching his arm. I saw Wyatt warming up and he got a play and he ran in. He called the play and added RED 325 on 2. I just laughed as he called the run play sent in and added RED an audible and a check to me in the flat a sideline pass to Allen and a post route route for JJ. We broke the huddle and Wyatt went under center and he looked over the defense and yelled hut and the other side jumped and flags flew. Back in the huddle he called the same two plays and said on 3. I thought damn we will jump this time. We lined up again and he was under center again but this time he stood behind the center, looked around and and yelled RED and he move back 3 yards and clapped his hands once and then twice quickly and the ball was snapped and he looked at me, faked a pass and the entire defense went for it and I don't think he even looked and lofted a high spiral and JJ caught it in stride and it was a simple TD. With the extra point we're we're up 14-0 and they were never close to scoring. The second half started with JJ taking the kickoff to the 45 and he was having a hell of a game. I was back in on offense and Wyatt was obviously going to be the QB. We were third and 6 and I don't know who called the play but it was a screen pass to me. Wyatt was in the shotgun and even with the play resulting in letting he rush in, he should have been good. I didn't see what happened as I got the ball and had a great block thrown in front of me and I scored on the play. What I found out was Wyatt got blasted and there was a penalty for a late hit. What I saw was Wyatt staring holes through the kid. I put it out of my mind and went on defense. Now down three scores they tried to throw and we were having a field day. JJ had another interception, Josh had a sack and 4 tackles for a loss. I was having fun as they simply stayed away from me. That wasn't the case on offense and Wyatt was told if he threw another pass the coach would tie a arm behind his back. I had that TD pass and in the third quarter I had 105 yards but no more scores. The big deal was that by the end of game we had held them scoreless and held them to 10 first downs. Truth be told we dominated the game on defense and the offense was much better. JJ and Wyatt would be hounded by the media types and I would get a break. When the game ended we gathered in front of the band and the alma mater was played and we sang along. At the end the five captains yelled ONE FOR ALL and even the band responded ALL FOR ONE, it was awesome. Wyatt found me and I said 7:00 I'll pick you up after I get Josh and Sean will meet us there. He was all smiles and a microphone was shoved in his face and it was the local reporter. I just stood aside and he was asked, so how did you get here. Wyatt chuckled and said, well my dad uprooted the entire family for a job here and until tonight it's been hard finding friends. Look what happened tonight is because of what I had around me, a great offensive line and a top receiver who can fly. Then there is this dude, indicating me, I'm just a eaglet and the Eagle and sole of this team has my back and that's a comfort. I laughed at comfort. There were a few more questions and Wyatt was asked about the late hit and he replied, no comment and the officials were on top of it. Then he added we didn't have a penalty like that all night, ours were silly mistakes that we will fix. Then the reporter said Mike, you had a great night as well, how do you feel about your eaglet? I laughed and said he underestimates his ability and I'm sure he will get an earful about that audible on his first play. Then I was asked about Jim and I said, it a reoccurring problem that flairs up when it does, long term he will be fine, thanks I have people waiting. JJ was going through the same thing and another reported grabbed Wyatt and I escaped. He needed the attention and I would insert a big needle in his head if it got too big. I went looking for Jim who was sitting in his locker, he looked at me and said MJ, I tried it just wasn't there and Wyatt is so fucking good there is no need to be in his way. I patted him on his back and said, it's a long season. I jumped into the shower before most guys got back and while drying off Josh was undressing and very happy. Mike, I actually got interviewed it was awesome. People are raving about the linebacker play and Chad was also interviewed and more than one reporter was looking for you. JJ was the last one in and he looked at me and said, thank for the warning about the reporters they mobbed me. I smiled and said well don't be a fucking star and they will disappear in a flash. I said hurry up the Tavern will be fucking awesome. Outside I found dad, Major Jim and John Carson. Dad said good game and I smiled and said yup. I looked at John and said the eaglet did great. He looked at me and said what? I shrugged and said your son in an infield interview gave himself a nickname. Read the paper tomorrow it's actually cute. I asked about Megan and was told, she can't do bleachers. JJ appeared and got a giant hug from is dad and was told something I didn't hear but JJ smiled. Looking around the girls were no where to be seen and JJ said well I'm not waiting as I'm hungry. I said fine and told dad to tell Megan, I loved her. Dad just looked and we left for the car. We ran into Josh and he said he would see us at the Tavern and we were off. I was wondering about Jim and was hoping like hell he would be there. At the Tavern, there was Jim and his date and our two girls and two empty chairs for Josh. JJ and I walked into a giant cheer and Josh got the same when he showed up a few minutes later. I looked at Mary Ann and said so who invited you? She said well we had to save the table. Babe, I have the fucking table reserved and the roadies would rather we fill it with players than dates. She gave me a look that would kill. I asked so did you see any of the game and she said the first half and then we left, there were too many adults there and not much fun and we couldn't get near the student section. I said, ok I'll fix that and ordered an iced tea. Josh asked about golf tomorrow and then he said he would be at my place a little before 7:00 and I said great but remind me to stop at South Hills and get clubs, I'll need them for Sean. He said he would try. The food came and Mary Ann and I continued to spar and I got the idea she hated the entire Tavern thing and well that would wear off on me as well but right now it was fun. After we ate, I looked at JJ and asked if he was ready and he said definitely. I kissed Mary Ann on the cheek and she said Mike, I'm sorry. I just shrugged and went to the car. As soon as we were outside JJ said we need to get control of those two. I said whatever but I'm pissed and busy all weekend but she is playing golf on Sunday with Cole and I and his chick Jessica. JJ laughed and said I'll go. I looked at him and said I'll keep that in mined. In the parking lot Wyatt and his parents were getting out of the car. I went over and said eaglet you have no idea what is about to happen, in fact I'm going to watch. I told John that he should order lot of food as a couple of people will pay the bill and I said eaglet order iced tea. He shrugged and said ok. When the opened the door, I didn't need to go in the place erupted. I was wondering what iced tea would become as he is young and with his rents. Well I'll ask tomorrow. I dropped JJ off at his place and went into the house. Dad and Megan were in the game room and I grabbed an iced tea and joined them. Megan apologized for missing the game. Megan, I would have loved you to be there but I completely understand, there will be other games. Dad asked about the eaglet and I told him Wyatt did that to himself and tomorrow in the paper the story will say the eaglets maiden flight was a successful first flight. They both laughed. I asked about Cole and was told, out with Jessica. Megan said, I hear you are flying to Latrobe for golf, wouldn't it be easier to drive? I said absolutely but complying with a request. Cole wants to impress Jessica, I'm guessing. Then he has arranged an early dinner with AP. I think at some points he will have a chat with the King about something. Megan just nodded. At this point I said good night and went to my place. Once alone in my room I thought about the game and was very comfortable. I liked the pressure free game that I had. Very solid numbers and going forward I might not be the focus. The only down side of the event was Jim and it seemed like he would be happy to backup Wyatt. I was shocked and pleased what the eaglet said about me and I was hoping that opponents would think that the torch has been past. The truth was we were much more balanced and I didn't need to come up with 300 yards of offense. We are good, damn good. Many more players who could be relied on. With all that in my head I set the timer for coffee and the alarm for 6:00 as I wanted a quick shower and to read the paper. When I jumped into bed Mary Ann appeared in my head and I assemble one of those many boxes in my head and put her in it and taped it shut. I wasn't giving he another thought till Sunday. If it wasn't for Jessica I would simply bring JJ. I was up right before the alarm and the coffee was brewing, I threw on some shorts and ran outside and grabbed the paper. Once I had my coffee I went directly to the sports section and was surprised by how many teams played games instead of scrimmages. The article about our team was, as I expected, the lead and it was long. The headline was: DEFENDING CHAMPS DOMINATED ERIE POWERHOUSE. This year's version of the champs is bigger, stronger, faster and have many more options than last year's team. It went on, the dominate part of this team is it defense lead by what could be one of the best linebacking group in high school football. The development of middle backer junior Josh Kline has surprised a lot of people. Chad Clarkson, a senior, has bulked up and developed nicely all lead by the man born to play the position Mike Simmons. When you add JJ Messer as free safety with that blazing speed you have a hard time scoring. The only downside of the evening was the physical condition of the starting QB. Jim described his condition as a pinched nerve and a disk issue and said it comes and goes and that it just didn't arrive tonight. The self proclaimed eaglet who stays under MJ's wings was a fledgling to behold. He threw for 2 TD's and 218 yards. Various reports indicate that his first play was an audible from a simple handoff to a long TD pass to the versatile JJ Messer who can out run the wind. Once this eaglet gets his adult feathers look out. It will be fun to watch. He took a few good hits and one nasty late hit. When asked about it he said, well the officials took care of it, I didn't have to and he simply smiled. Wyatt Carson an eaglet to watch. After reading the article we need to get some credit to both lines. It was a quick shower and Josh was there and we picked Wyatt up and drove to south hills and got my clubs. While there I cancelled my time at Latrobe and confirmed Sunday. We drove to the Oakmont with 2 sets of clubs in the trunk and Wyatt with a set beside him in the back and Josh riding shotgun. I teased the eaglet about being in the back and he laughed and said, who give a fuck as I'm playing Oakmont. That was the second time I heard him use that work and was glad to see he was getting comfortable. At the club, Liam's buddy Bill unloaded the bags and put them on carts and I gave him a hard time about the job and he said much easier on my back and more money. He asked if we were walking or riding and I said we would walk. Bill said, Mike there are two young caddies Logan and Austin who are hoping to get out, they are. a little rough but nice kids. We rode to the Pro Shop and both followed me inside. I asked for caddies and for the two guys Bill mentioned. I said have them meet us at the range and when my fourth arrives send him down to join us. I bought a dozen of the latest Titleist golf balls and gave each of them 6 balls. Wyatt's face lit up when he saw the Oakmont logo saying well one of these will never see the face of a club. We're we're soon joined by Sean and the two caddies. Sean and I hugged and I show him his clubs and said balls and shit are in the bag. I got the caddies together and found they had more rounds in that Bill indicated and I told them this was a very casual round. My ball was played as is and good rough lies for everyone else. The smiled and said sure thing Mr. Simmons. I told them that during the round I was Mike and pointed out Wyatt, Josh and Sean. I actually hit some balls as I hadn't played in a while and we moved tot he putting green, my favorite thing as I had two people who hadn't putted on these greens. Josh was first and had about 20 feet up hill and when he putted it was 12 feet past the hole and he just looked. Wyatt watching all that was working of the shorter putts and his 5 footer was 10 feet past. He shook his head and said I thought Muirfield Village greens were fast. After about 15 minutes we moved to the first tee. Josh and Sean selected tees with a yardage of about 6,500 yards and Wyatt looked at me and said the tips which were 7,100 yards. I asked if he was sure and he said well I have played the tips at Muirfield Village, what's the difference and I said greens and 6 spots on the world rankings. He shrugged and said game on. We hit our drives, both good and I told Logan as we were playing the tips, leave Wyatt's ball where it lied in the rough. Josh found it funny that we hit our ball past his on the first holes and there was 40 yards difference in the tees. Wyatt played the first two holes well but on #3 he hit it a touch left and found the church pews, a large bunker which runs between holes 3 and 4. They have raised areas of grass in strips. The only thing to do is pitch it sideways to the fairway. The other thing you absolutely can't do is hit it past the pin on this hole. Wyatt trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit did both and sunk a 10 foot putt for a double bogie. On the way to the 4th tee, I put my arm around him and said eaglet, think take what the course will give you. Ask for more and it bites back. Josh and Sean were getting along and Sean had him relaxed and was sizing him up. It was a fun day and when we got to #8 Josh said great a short par 4. We all laughed as it is a 288 yard par 3 with a very large sand trap. For Josh and Sean it was only a 245 yard hole. No one got on the green and yet Wyatt saved par. So for the front, Josh shot 43, Sean 45, Wyatt 38 and me 39. The back 9 was fun and Sean was now paying more attention to Wyatt which was good. We got to Cole's favorite hole #17 and I was up by a stroke. I decided to lay up and Wyatt, asked for a driver. It's a short hole surrounded by 5 bunkers and heavy rough. Wyatt hit a good drive and it ended up on a bunker called Big Mouth. It is deep and front right. I just shrugged and said better than in the grass. Great bunker shot and 3 foot body putt. Now I had 10 feet for my bid to protect my slim lead and it lipped out and we were tie. On the way to the 18th tee Wyatt said Mike, I bet I beat you on this hole. I put my arm around him and asked, so what does the winner get? He said well whatever they want. I stopped dead in my trackers grabbed his shoulders and said look eaglet when you have adult feathers we might talk but today it's a bet and the winner get $5.00. He smiled and said fine. I was thinking Ray and I were doing that at his age. It was silly shit but I wasn't taking any chances with Wyatt. The hole is 484 and we both hit good drives with me being about 170 from the center. Wyatt was about 180 both in the fairway on opposite sides. I looked closely at the pin location and laughed as it was the Sunday position for the Majors. I knew there was a backstop. For me it was a perfect 6 iron. Wyatt hit and was 20 feel left of the hole just past pin high. I aimed for the right side of the green playing for my usual draw and it a perfect shot about 15 feet past the pin and Wyatt yelled over a little deep and I pointed and the ball was 3 feet from the hole. He shook his head and I yelled over there is a reason I pay dues. I paid the caddies and asked that my set be kept here but we would take the other three with us. We grabbed a table on the patio and chatted about the day and what they though of the course. Once we were finished eating I looked at Wyatt and Josh and said, why dot you go explore the clubhouse, it drips interesting things and history. As soon as we were alone Sean said MJ, Josh is great and we might nap him early and I invited him to visit me. Wyatt however is another story, that kid in 2 years will have the pick. He is smart, understands the game and right now no ego. Sean and I talked for about a half hour and I was just going to look for the other 2 when they appeared. I gave Sean a hug and everyone else shook hands and we loaded the car and drove home. At Wyatt's house he got out of the car, handed me $5.00 and said that was awesome. I asked if it was better than Muirfield Village and he smiled and said no comment. Josh was parked at my place and I asked if he wanted to come in for a while and he said yup and we headed in. Once Josh and I were inside I asked what he was drinking and he said a beer would be nice. I grabbed two bottles out of the refrigerator handed him one and we went out back. I looked at him and asked are you and your rents ready for what is about to come? He looked at me and I said, Sean told me you were invited to VT. Mike that's just to see the place and very unofficial. Josh, unofficial visits exist only on paper. You will get an offer from them very soon. Again there was that blank look and I said dude, we have had a scrimmage and a game and all the news was about you, Chad, JJ and me. Everyone but you have made verbal commitments so what do you think will happen? You have great size, work hard, I'm assuming your grades are good and you like to hit. Perfect middle backer. So I'm guessing 20 - 25 offers. You have a lot to consider and it requires you to make a plan and stick with it. Josh, I'll help and coach will help. He dealt with all the schools for me until I was ready to talk. He was a big help. We changed the subject to Wyatt with Josh asking how good can he be? Josh, he can be a one in a generation QB at this level. The rest depends on ego, work ethic and luck. Last year there was Jeff and you know that story, then Jim and who knows where that is going, nowhere good, I'm thinking. Just always have a plan B. Josh then asked about Mary Ann on Friday night and were we having a rough patch? I laughed and said who the fuck knows, but I'm still pissed about it and we are to play Latrobe tomorrow. Cole wants to take Jessica and fly up, which is a pain as it is an easier trip in a car. Besides I haven't flown that single engine thing in weeks. We might just play three. It's complicated as Cole wants to go there for a reason unknown to me. Josh thanked me for a fun day and was on his way.
