Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2021 14:39:37 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 265 Wyatt got in the car and I said, please be quiet, that was very hard for me. Neither of us said a word and we pulled in the driveway and went to my place inside I got us both an iced tea and sat on the loveseat. I looked at Wyatt and asked what's up? Mike, I need you to know that wasn't me, hell I tried several different solutions and Jim was having none of it. Wyatt, if I thought you made that move you would not be sitting here. Now what do you need? Mike, dad said I could talk with you about a few days in New York. Wyatt for me it is a combination of fun and work and we would fly up early Saturday and I mean early, with wheels up at 7:00. Dad has a house there and we would stay there, it is right on the lake. I need to check on things at the Winery. After that it is fun. We can waterski, swim and simply relax. We would head back before noon on Monday and be home by 2:00. You could spend the afternoon with your granddad. Wyatt this is not a wild weekend, no girls and not much drinking. JJ and I as the flight crew won't be able to drink after noon on Sunday. There will be no drinking if we waterski and you and I will agree on a daily limit for you. JJ and I are not your rents but we will be watching. I have asked Josh and my brother Cole will be along. There are private rooms for each of us and there is an excellent possibility we will be skinny dipping. You can decide what what works for you and what doesn't. Dress is extremely casual and we will not eat out and the weekend for everyone is on me. Mike, what's the plane like? I said it is a twin engine Cessna seats six and a crew of two. Both JJ and I will be flying. Wyatt, I have made this trip about 8 times and I have the route memorized. Both of us are well trained and safe. Mike, why me? Wyatt because I knew this day would happen and I was hoping it was down the road. I looked at him and asked if he had a girlfriend and he said no and I asked if he had a boyfriend and he said no. Wyatt you will come home from this with a few more adult feathers. Let's get you home. At Wyatt's place he asked if I wanted to meet his granddad? I said how about we save that till Monday afternoon. Back at my place I grabbed a beer and when I looked at my pictures and saw Jim and I and the metal I simply started to cry. I looked at the other picture of me and JJ and wondered if we would have a metal. The reality of the game and how physical it was set in. I had to put that out of my mind. I called Jim but as expected it went to voicemail. With that I went to the house looking for dad but Megan tool one look at me and said he is at the club but what happened? When I told her she said Mike, you knew that would happen and it's great that Jim grew up enough to know. Mike when was it that football became a job for you and not fun? I smiled and said it's been like that all year. Why is that? Megan we have to win. She smiled and said well actually you don't, sure you are expected to win and if you fall short the sun comes up the next day, VT is still there and we all love you. Isn't that what you would tell Cole about golf. I smiled and said, yes it is and you are better than dad. I went and looked at Ashley and Megan said, please don't wake her. I said well good night and thanks. Back at my place I reviewed the three resumes and took a shower and jumped into bed. I was up early put coffee on and went for a run and JJ was there and he said I knew after yesterday you would run. Once we finished we stopped at his driveway and I said thanks. I looked at him and I said somehow I need to make football fun again. He laughed and said no shit and I'll see you at 4 I'll pick you up. I said great. It was a quick shower khakis a blue shirt and blazer and loafers with socks. I filled my coffee travel mug and drove to the new place. I shook hands with the security guy and I told him what was going on and that he could leave once the third guy got here. He said no sir, I'm here till you leave. I said thanks and looked around and found the conference room. About 8:55 there was a knock on the door and the security guard introduced Walt Parker. He was the oldest of the three. I was handed his resume and we talked for about 45 minutes and I was satisfied and could easily hire him. I promised to get back to him on Tuesday afternoon and I walked him out. Right on time I was introduced to Clay Allison and it was pretty much the same only mid 30's and again after 50 minutes I walked him out and waiting was Scott Cleary. I smiled and said follow me and asked if he knew Clay? He said a worthy competitor. So when you two compete who wins. Scott said whoever has the best client. Scott was the youngest at 29 and was actually in the middle of the pack and that concerned me but there was something about him that got my attention. As we walked through Scott said wow, this place is impressive, when you moving in? I said next weekend. So Scott, tell me about you? He smiled and said I assume you want stuff that you might not already know. Married one kid Scott and he is 2. A second one on the way due in October. I work hard but try to have weekends for me and the family. I love golf and am a 6 at Chartiers CC. You know the academics and work history. Scott do you go to church? Mike, why would you ask that? I smiled and said to see the response and it was good you avoided a question and asked one. He just laughed at that. Ok Scott when did you last hit a home run? He said High School baseball, why? Scott I was asking about work. Mike, home runs are not my thing, singles and doubles with the occasional triple make more money for me and the company than three home runs. Little things and little projects matter and build a stable company. Who knows that little deal might in time turn into something big. Scott you have been with you current company for a number of years, why a change? Mike, this would be a step up and I have always wanted to build something. Scott, do you have a noncompete? He said yes. How will you deal with it? Mike, it gets respected like the one you will have me sign should I leave. Scott what are your compensation requirements? Mike, I expect to sell and list properties and expect industry standard in commission. Once we have people on board I would expect a bump on their business, again industry standard. Also, expenses and my Club dues paid. Scott, when can you start? Mike is that an offer? I said yes and you will work with Maggie in HR and firm up the deal, which I need to approve and Tim will have the noncompete for you to sign and you will need to pass a drug test. Mike, I'll resign as soon as Maggie and I work things out and they will escort me out of the building. We shook hands and I said welcome aboard. I reminded him that everyone was at the old location, he said thanks and I drove to the dump. It was close to noon and I was glad to see the place was virtually empty. I sent Tim and Maggie an email about Scott and in the one to Maggie I told her, I remembered the drug test. I laughed at that knowing I would get an earful. Just then Major Jim appeared and said let's go we are going to lunch. We walked around the corner and I ordered a salad and an iced tea, Jim ordered a small salad and a cheeseburger. Mike, I'm not distracting you I have been working on a deal with Cessna for the new Citation VII. Mike you would get a fully customizable plane and the price is 4.5 million. I swallowed hard and said that's a lot. Jim, there is fuel and maintenance. Mike, all tax deductible. They would finance it with nothing down for 15 years at 1% and throw in the maintenance for 5 years. That would happen at their facility and you would be without a jet for two weeks a year. I started to say something and Jim said Mike, that door #1. Would you like to hear about door #2. I laughed and asked is this LETS MAKE A DEAL? Jim ignored the TV show reference and said, they deduct $1,000,000 of the price, same finance terms. MJS Enterprises Owens 51%, Technologies owns 44% and Majors Flight School owns 5%. I laughed and said so I own the entire thing? Yup but your corporations have the risks. However, you will advertise the plane, be photographed with the plane in the background and every time you are interviewed you mention the Cessna VII. Oh, you will have a picture and a model of the plane in your office. Last thing your MJS logo on the tail and Cessna VII on the plane at a location and size you agree to. In both cases you get to pick the color and design of the logo. I started to eat the salad and looked at Jim and said so door #1 would cost me about $25,500 a month plus fuel and insurance and door #2 for a little publicity it would cost $20,000 a month and the companies pay insurance. So Jim in 15 years the thing costs $3,600,000. Jim laughed and said well so much for simple math being difficult for you. Major important simple math is easy my check book breeds Franklins so it's meaningless. So Mike. What do you think? Jim, what's to think with door 2 as long as I kiss their ass a couple of time a month and one of my companies comes up with 20k every month I'm a jet jockey. So when they delivering the jet. He said early February. Jim, please run this by Tim. We finished eating and I said well let's teach those North Hills people how to play football. I hurried home and changed into jeans and a polo shirt, grabbed my Walkman and plopped in a Neil Diamond tape and JJ, blasted the horn and we were on our way to school. It was typical food and JJ said MJ, you need to feed us this is awful. JJ, not happening I'm broke I just bought a jet. He laughed so hard that guys turned to see what was going on. I looked at him and said asshole, you have till January 30th to get IFR and Jet certified. He said, shit my classes are hard. I looked at him and said drop Spanish. JJ just laughed. I was looking for Jim and he was nowhere around but found Wyatt and asked if he would puke on the bus? He said nope that's an opening night thing and that he was ready. I said good and saw coach and asked about Jim? I was told he would be here asked to be excused from dinner and I said fine. Mike, he is ok and has grown up. Coach thanks but no one grows up that fast. Mike, it is what it is and if Wyatt gets hurt we are toast. Coach it will be what it becomes. With that I put the ear buds in and turned the volume on the Walkman up and went and sat in the stadium. It was calm and relaxing and I had had a great day and thought I hope we started on defense. Eventually I wandered to the buss and grabbed my gear and threw it in the luggage compartment. Even for these short trips we had a nice ride. I jumped in my usual seat in the back and just listened to the music. It was a 45 minute ride and as soon as I could I grabbed my bag and went inside and set up in a locker. It was a tee shirt pads pants socks and shoes and outside and sat on the team bench. The home head coach came over and said, I see nothing has changed with you, a man of habits. I smiled and said, I guess so. Mike, the gates open in about 5 and the place is sold out. I pointed to the hill and he said yup and I bet they have been drinking for hours. I stood up, shook his hand and said well I guess we better get to it. He smiled and said good luck and I went inside. As is typical we wandered out for warmup and again JJ, Josh and I were on the defense side of things. Wyatt was at QB and Todd was at halfback. It was the same as last week. We turned the field over to the band and I stopped at the locker room door and pointed to the mob on the hill and waved and immediately the siren went off. They were outside the stadium in their backyards with a perfect view of the game. No tickets and very few rules. The trick was to score quick and quiet them down. We were decked out in all purple with white numbers and stripes. They were the absolute latest in uniforms. We were ready to go out and we heard a big scream and that damn siren. When we went out there was some noise as our tickets were limited. At the coin toss I called TAILS and the official tossed the coin and when it hit the ground it bounced once and was tails. I said sir, we would like to defer and the home team said we will take the ball. I chose the direction away from the group on the hill. I found Wyatt and he said, I get it they are loud. The kickoff was in the end zone and it was first and 10 on the 20. Their first play was right at me with a double team and I managed to clog thing up but Josh blasted the runner for no gain. In the huddle JJ asked if I needed help on that side. We broke the huddle and I was sure it was another run play but the line indicated pass blocking so I saw a gap and decided to try to shoot the gap and if it was a run I had it blown up and if a pass I had the QB. I was a step towards the gap when the ball was snapped and if it had been on 2 I would have been offsides. I hit the QB with my shoulder just as he was releasing the ball and I fell on top of him. I had no idea but I heard a loud groan and I looked and JJ was streaking down the sideline and damn he got caught from behind and we were on the 4. Neither of us were on offense and I yelled would someone help JJ tie his shoe. I looked and damn Jim was in at QB. The first play was a hand off to Todd who ran for 2 yards. Jim was under center and the noise was unreal and he took the snap and dove forward and it was a TD. With the try we were up 7. They went 4 and out and I had a sack and the QB was pissed and I heard him yell will someone block that dude or at least try. We moved the ball down the field with short passes and runs and stalled because of a procedure penalty and we kicked a 27 yard field goal which would have been good from 40. Our defense was awesome and they went 4 and out and were negative yards on offense. On offense under center I heard Wyatt yell Omaha 541 and he shifted to shotgun it was a 20 yard sideline pass to JJ and needed to be thrown like a bullet. He drilled the throw and JJ caught it and went out of sounds. Wyatt got up and looked at the official, thinking it was a late hit. Apparently the official said "son welcome to the big leagues. I was told Wyatt replied, thank you sir. This time it was Charlie 232 and I thought a center screen. The ball was snapped and Wyatt simply drilled the kid in the face with the ball and the helmet broke. There was a bit of a reaction to that with some pushing and shoving and flags flew and it was offsetting dead ball fouls which meant nothing. Wyatt said something to the official who laughed and Coach called a time out. He started by asking is that out of everyone's system. We said yes and he looked at Wyatt and said pump fake that throw and make it a down and out. JJ do you have you damn shoes tied and everyone laughed. Back to it Wyatt pumped fake the pass, they all bit and the safety simply blasted JJ. Flags flew and this time we simply went to the huddle and there was a 15 yard penalty and the official went on to say because of his actions #25 white has been excused form further participation this evening. That was the politest ejection I had ever seen. Todd was having a good night and two more runs and a short pass and we were inside the ten. Then under center Wyatt called ROMEO ACE CHARLIE and I was sure coach was going to stop it. It was a fake reverse to JJ and Todd was to filter in the other direction for a pass in the flat. The play went off and everyone followed JJ and Todd caught the pass in the end zone in celebration and he was leveled. We kicked the extra point and we were up 24 - 0 and the quarter ended. The second quarter was more the same as they went 4 and out and we with Jim in at QB and short passes and a lot of running scored twice. I played about half that quarter and as we ended the half 38 - 0 and it was the mercy rule and Adam played the entire half at QB and it was mostly a JV game the rest of the way. As usual we went to the band location and they played and we sang. Then Josh screamed ONE FOR ALL and everyone yelled ALL FOR ONE and we ran to the locker room. None of our stats were good as we hardly played and I was glad Jim got in especially on the first series. I later found out that it was Wyatt asking the coach to do that. Game balls were give to the defense and Wyatt, who immediately took the ball and handed to Jim and said dude, for all you have done and will do for us. The place just started chanting Jim, Jim, Jim over and over again. It was super quick showers but was long as everyone played. As usual I was asked to sit with Chuck and he asked what I thought? Coach at some point those cheap shots are going to matter. Mike, they threw two people out. Coach that's actually on them they ignored the first two events the late hit and Wyatt drilling that kid in the face. Then the offsetting BS after that. The message was it's ok and we will cover it. Talk to Wyatt as some official will eject him for that. Anything else? I said yup, nice job not overreacting. I went and sat in a seat in the back. The ride home was a bit quicker and we unloaded the bus and threw our shit in our lockers. The staff would deal with them. Outside there was my dad and Cole, JJ's dad and John Carson and an older guy. I went up to him and good evening I assume you're are the eaglets grandfather. He laughed and said dude, the way you play football I'll be whatever you need. I laughed and said I assume that's a compliment. Dad asked where you going and I said a quick snack at Eat N Park as I'm flying in the morning. JJ said MJ, let's just go home and I'll see you at 5:45. Wyatt, we will pick you up and you can see what goes into flying. With that we all headed to our cars. JJ asked MJ, do you have messages from the girls? I said let me check and I said nope. He laughed and said neither do I. I just shrugged and said I'm out of here. When I got home I checked my messages and Josh said he would be at the airport by 6:30. I went to the house so I could say goodnight. Megan was I'd feeding the baby and I had to laugh. Megan smiled and asked so was it fun tonight? I said yup and we were dominant. Dad asked about the start. I said JJ can't tie his shoe. And Jim the first series? Wyatt did that. So dad, was I better tonight? Mike Wyatt's grandfather said it all. Dad, before you hear it somewhere else I'm close to a deal on a Jet. It amounts to 20k a month plus fuel. Mike, how was that pulled off? I said Major Jim and I'm special and they can't afford another bad intro. I'll have to promote the plane. Mike, I hope the deal blows up but it's a good deal. I was in my room quickly packing and it was easy as it was Jeans and shorts, tees and polos. I was collecting underwear when my phone rang. I looked at the number and said what. Mike are you coming to the Tavern? No, it's a away game and I'm packing. So we are stuck here at the Tavern and have a bill to pay. I said that's funny don't you two have any money? Well not enough and all we have had is soft drinks and a pizza. Look, I haven't heard from you in days and you skip the game and chose the Tavern. Babe you chose poorly. She said in more ways that one and hung up. I set the coffee and the alarm and jumped into bed and was quickly asleep. I was up early and jump started the coffee and went outside and grabbed the paper. Naturally there was a big story and it started with early pic six was derailed by a shoe malfunction and Senior QB lead the team to an early score before turning things over to the eaglet who earned more than a few adult feathers. Senior linebacker was outstanding with 2 blocked passes 9 tackles with 3 for loss yardage, all in less than a half. The game was marred by two ejections for the home team and an exploding helmet. The helmet was the result of a bad throw from Wyatt Carson which was intended for JJ Messer. When asked about their playing time both QB's said there is no issue and it was a coaching decision. When asked about his arm Jim replied "it is what it is and I'm fine." The article ended with there is more to the QB situation, a lot more. I jumped into the shower and dressed in Jeans and a tee, running shoes and no socks and was enjoying the coffee when JJ came in laughing. I said dude, your are early and obviously in a great mood. MJ, did you pay to get the girls out of the Tavern last night? I shook my head and asked, did you? He said I hope they had to sweep the floor and do dishes. I was introduced to his cousin Luke and he was awesome looking. He was about 6'1" around 190 lbs with short light brown hair. We shook hands and I said welcome. JJ, I'm concerned about Josh as I feel Cole and Wyatt will bond and with you and me that leaves him a bit on his own. Mike, that's the real reason I'm early, we could laugh about the girls all weekend but last night I invited Chad. I jumped up pulled him into a hug and he kissed me and it was a bit more than intense. He smiled and said we will have to be very discrete all weekend. We left to get Wyatt and found him and his dad in the driveway. I got up and told John, nothing weird or dangerous and minimal drinking. He smiled and said I'm sure you have this. I laughed and said just one or two more adult feathers for the eaglet. He shook his head and said have fun, just not too much. Back at the house I had to get Cole and he was quickly in the truck. At the airport I told Wyatt everyone works and his job was to stow the baggage. Cole and JJ started to unfasten the plane and I went inside and filed the flight plan. With that done JJ and I started the pre-check, withe Luke following us and watching everything. I asked about that and he said flight school soon. The last thing I did was check the fuel and when I did I said shit as it wasn't full. I reached for my phone and then saw the fuel truck heading our way. Once I was satisfied I Checked led the baggage door and it was secured. I said ok guys get on board and use the seat belts. Once they were in I said, I know this is the first time in this type of plane for 4 of you. We will takeoff and follow route 22. At a predetermined point we will head north north east and pass over Beaver Stadium and a lot of trees at that point we will head north. Our flight time is about 2 hours. The weather is forecast to be good but being a small plane it could at times be bumpy, that's normal. Once we are at altitude you can unbuckle but keep the walking around to a minimum. It the weather remains good and there isn't a lot of traffic you can take turns up front. Simply buckle in, put the headphones on and don't touch anything. We good? Wyatt asked how high will we be and I simply replied 13,000 feet and went up front. JJ was soon seated beside me and I very carefully went through the preflight startups procedures and and we were easily cleared to taxi. Waiting for takeoff clearance I asked JJ should we do a short field take off and he said nope, someone will puke. We were on our way for what I was hoping was a good time and some bonding. I asked about Luke and was told later. Wyatt needed someone that would be around next year and I was hoping that was Cole.
