Date: Wed, 4 Dec 2019 13:05:50 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 64 We arrived at the stadium only to discover that our 8:00 start was not going to happen and that we would start at 8:45. I thought damn, I hate hanging around. I grabbed, Jim, Alex, Ray and a few others and started to the field and were immediately stopped and no explanation and even begging got us near the field. We went to coach and ask if he could at least get us to the stands as a team to watch some football and adjust to the environment. He said sit tight and came back about 10 minutes later and said ok, let's watch some football and we went and sat in end zone seats. At half time we started to the locker room for the usual pregame things and were loosening up in the hallway. We had a final talk from the coach and went to the field and damn this was something. A pro multipurpose stadium mostly empty but I'm betting 1/3 filled. Warmups were typical but I noticed a lot of looking around. At the coin toss Jim called tails and it was heads and they deferred, so our ball to start. Well it was 3 and out and defense and they went three and out. We were feeling each-other out and not doing much else. On our third possession coach surprised the crap out of us and called M J Special. Fuck it worked again and we scored a 60 yard TD. I'm 4 for 4 and loving it. As the half ended we were up 14-7. The second half started and before we know it it was 14-14. So game on and the hitting got a little more intense. Late in the 3rd quarter it was still tied at 14 and we were on defense with a 3rd and seven and I blitzed and hit the QB and he fumbled and Tanner one of our lineman picked up the ball and took off and just before he got hit he lateraled it to me and we scored. We were up 21-14 but lots of football left. The game continued this way as the third quarter ended. It was nice to have a lead but anything but a sure thing. The 4th quarter started and I was told both offense and defense rest of the way. We were hoping to run the ball and eat the clock. To start the fourth quarter they had the ball moving it some down the field and finally they had a 4th and 2 and we stacked the line but the dude broke thru for 15 yards so it was really getting tense. Then there was a screen pass a broken tackle and it was 21-20. They lined up for a 2 point try but thankfully they had an illegal procedure penalty and tied the game with an extra point. Well we were getting the ball and had 5:38 left in the game. With the kickoff and the return we had the ball on our 38 and 3 times out. All we needed was a field goal and our kicker Reed was excellent and a soccer player so we could be in great shape, his longest was 42 yards, but damn this is different. Coach was being conservative with the play calls but we were moving it with a mixture of short passes and runs. We were just over mid field and there was still 3:40 left. Then coach mixed things with a play action pass Jim went thru his checks and finally lobed a pass to me in the flat and we got a much needed first down and I was thinking just keep it on the ground and move into field goal range for Reed. We were getting close to Reed's range and coach called a time out. Then he did it again and called 3 plays and said just run these no huddle and if we don't get a first down call a time out. If we get a first down run the same 3 three plays in the opposite order. Just move the ball and run the plays quickly. I was thinking shit all these plays are me running the ball, coach must be nuts. The first play was me off tackle and it went for a surprising 6 yards. The next play was a pitch to me running right side and I got lose for about 10 yards but the tacked knocked me on my ass and then I was hit with a helmet on my helmet and that's all I remember. I just laid there and was eventually helped off the field. From Jim's POV; Damn that dude flattened Mike and the spear was awful. The yardage and the penalty put us well into Reed's range. During the time the medical people helped Mike coach said guys, we need to get a TD, there is too much time left. Coach, I said there isn't that much time and I was reminded it would be over a minute and they had all three times out left. I thought shit! Coach had 3 new plays and the same deal no huddle and move the damn ball. We were on the 20 so it would take 2 first downs. The first and second plays netted 8 yards so it was 3rd and 2 and we were on the 12 yard line. The next play was a QB draw play. I took the snap and dropped a few steps back like it was a pass wrapped 2 hands around the ball, lowered my head and ran forward as fast as I could. I was blasted but the play netted enough for the first down on the 9 yard line. The sticks were reset and we lined up and I was watching the play clock and I snapped the ball with 2 seconds left on the play clock and handed the ball off and we were still on the 9 yard line. Then a time out was called and coach gathered us together and called an end around. That was strange call on the 9 but what the fuck, I was not going to freelance, not now. We lined up and ran the play and we were now on the 4 yard line but the play went out of bounds so the clock stopped with 1:09 left. So it was 3rd down and goal from the four. The next play was a straight keeper and I was down inside the 1. There was another time out and coach said Jim, we need to kick the FG but don't you dare run a play. Just line up give a couple of hard counts and I don't care if we are called for a penalty or if it is a delay of game. The 5 yards back will help the kick angle. We lined up and I took my time getting under center and I settled under center barked a count and the entire defense moved across the line but it was an18" penalty and that did not really help. Since the clock was stopped anyway coach called a time out and when we got over he asked the linemen what they thought, could they guarantee an 18" gain. Alex said Coach take it to the fucking bank, we got this. Ok, here is the deal. Jim you are keeping the ball and and everyone pinch in on Alex and the two running back climb up Jim's ass and make sure all three of you get in the end zone. Do the hard count once and then run the play. Stay calm and disciplined just don't fuck this up. We lined up and I'm not sure they believed we would run a play and on the hard count no one moved this time and immediately the ball was snap and I dove straight forward and there was a small hole and a big painful push from behind and a score and the place went wild, well half the place. We kicked the extra point and now we had to hold on for 53 seconds. We kicked off and they would be starting on their 19 yard line. Four passes and 2 times out and it was our ball on the 19. It was victory formation and the biggest win in school history. I went to find Mike and was told he was taken to the hospital. I found coach and asked about Mike and he said that he was moving and was simply out of it an obvious concussion and that his dad, Bill and Carrie were on their way to the hospital and that he would be going directly there as well and that I was more than welcome to come as well. I said coach fuck that the entire team goes, and goes right now. Jim, that's not necessary and I said coach we are all going if we have to walk so get over it. We grabbed the trophy and the gold metals and got on the buss and it was off to the hospital. We were all still in our uniforms taking our shoulder pads off on the way. At the hospital it was nuts as we were all in the lobby and the staff had no idea how to deal with us. It was finally determined that Ray, Alex and I as captains could visit for 5 minutes then we were all to leave. It turned out Mike was a good bit better and his first words were who won? I just handed him his gold metal and hugged him. He smiled and said tell the team thanks for the visit and I'm throwing a party as soon as these assholes here let me out and clear me. Now please let me rest. Mike, Sr. walked to the lobby and thanked everyone for coming and told them Mike was doing better just a little more loopier than usual. We all laughed and quietly boarded the bus. Mike's dad POV I was scared out of my mind, but it helped when Mike was able to stagger off the field, at least he was not paralyzed. I immediately called Dr. Collins and had him met us at the hospital. There was a battery of tests and Drs. Collins and Jenkins were there. There was a long conversation, of some sort with Mike and then Bill and I were asked in and I invited Carrie to join us. Mike appeared to be doing better as the night wore on. The doctors said that he was responding well but had a concussion, he needed to rest and that until he returned to the agility levels that he was at when he was examined when he thought he had a concussion, there would be no activity and definitely no football. When Mike heard that he just laid back in the bed and said THANK GOD, IM USED UP. Then Mike said dad, please get out of here, take Carrie home and Bill, I'm taking you to rehab tomorrow but I'm betting dad is driving, we can gag him so he doesn't weigh in and everyone laughed. Then he said Dr. Jenkins, I need out of here tomorrow by noon, I promise once I get Bill to Rehab I'm in bed. Does that work, he said Mike, we will see in the morning, I'll see you around 10:00. That's the best I can offer. Mike asked that everyone except Carrie get out and she will be along shortly. Once everyone left and it was only Carrie and I she broke down and cried. We held each other and hugged. We kissed and she went for my nips under the damn hospital gown and felt me up and said damn that's not broke. I said babe, just get out of here, I love you. When she got to the door she turned and said Mike, I love you. I said babe, I know. Once she left I hit the button and instead of a nurse Dr. Jenkins came in sat on the bed and said Mike, I'll get you out of here tomorrow but you better follow the fucking rules and I don't care what game there is next week or how well you think you are doing you are not playing. Doc, I'm good with that but the Rehab thing is important and so is a business meeting I have Monday afternoon. Michael don't push this or I'll have your dad put you right back in the hospital. Doc, I get that but those two things are happening, can we please agree on that? Mike, I agree to the rehab thing, I'll stop at your house Monday at noon and if you are making progress I'll drive you to the meeting. You good with that? Yes Doc. Thanks for being here tonight, anything else? Yes Mike, I'm here as I want you awake for a while. What do you remember of that last play? Doc, that I was pissed that I didn't score, WTF and then the white flash of light then nothing till I saw the trainer? Mike were you unconscious? I think so but not for long, I think. Mike, you can expect the some or all of the following; inability to concentrate, mood swings, headaches, dizziness, tiredness, trouble sleeping. The good news is that when you thought you had a concussion Dr. Collins was able to get a baseline for you and until you are at that level again you need to take it easy. This can take days or in some cases weeks and even months. So Mike are you glad that football is over and I simply said yes. Do you think this might impact your decision to play college football? This time I said doc I was never sure about college football, I could be satisfied working out and running. Mike you have to know that you will never keep up your current workout schedule. Doc, that will be what it becomes. Doc, would you mind continuing this conversation tomorrow I'm exhausted. Mike, I'll see you tomorrow around 10:00 and see if I can get you out of here to help with your brother. Do you want something to help you sleep? Doc, fuck no I'll be asleep before you get to your car. He shook his head and said Mike your vocabulary there are nurses around, good night. Good night my ass, I think they woke me up every hour or so just to see if I was alive. About 6:00 the food service people came in and I ordered breakfast and just laid there already board out of my mind. Breakfast came and the coffee was good but the other stuff except for the orange juice was awful. I turned on the television and that lasted about 15 minutes and I had a headache. I dozed off and was again disturbed with temperature and blood pressure checks. I fell asleep and this time it was Dr. Jenkins. He said good morning Mike I hear you had a restful night. Doc, it was anything but that can they please just stay out of here and let me rest? He laughed and said Mike those were my orders, so relax. I also hear that other than coffee and juice breakfast was a bust, what was the problem? Doc, it was awful. Last question why did you turn off the TV so quickly? I replied, I had a headache. Mike, why didn't you ask for something? Doc, it wasn't that bad and Sunday morning TV bores me. Mike all good answers but the last one, while it might bore you you turned it off because you could not concentrate on it and the screen bothered you, is that the reason? Damn, yes it it now can I get out of here? He looked me over, checked my eyes and some reactions and said Mike, I'll let your dad know he can pick you up but it is straight to rehab, drop your brother off and you go straight to your room and get into bed. No calls no visitors nothing and I'll stop by tomorrow and we will see about your meeting, I be over before noon. Best I can do at this point but you are more than holding your own at this point. Oh, you might be an I'm in charge type guy but I'm having a long talk with your dad and until you are 18 he runs the show. Get some rest. Oh doc one thing, Mike now what, is there a shower in this place, I stink. Mike how about I send in a cute nurse to give you a sponge bath? Damn doc, you can be a jerk just a shower, please. Mike there is one in the room so I will send someone in to make sure you don't fall. I used the phone in my room and called dad and is line went directly to voice mail and I left a message come get me and bring food. Then an orderly came in and I got up and took a very long shower and asked for a razor and shaved. Feeling tons better I climbed into bed and again fell asleep. This time I was awakened by the smell of food and there was a hoagie and dad and Bill. I devoured the hoagie and fries and asked did either of you think to bring clothes? Bill whipped a bag at me which I caught and went in and changed. I came out and Bill said Mike you seem fine to me I threw that bag at you and you just snagged it out of the air, no problem. Bill don't be a smart ass let's get the fuck out of here. At home there was coffee and juice and the Sunday morning paper. I went to the sports page started reading and almost immediately put it down went into the game room and laid on the sofa. Dad came in sat down and asked if I was ok. Dad, no I'm not, but will be fine. This is strange, I can't concentrate. Can I please have my phone? He got up went somewhere and placed my phone on the coffee table. He said two calls and one needs to be you coach. Yes, dad right away, I said. I called coach Weston and we talked for a while. He congratulated me on a great season and said that I was the most gifted and hard working athlete he has ever coached. He thank me again for how well I dealt with the drama of the coaching change and the recruiting. I told him I was done for the year as per doctors orders. He said Mike, I heard and you will be missed but there are other games, you already won the one that matters. When you are recovered I would like to show you the film of the end of the game. Stop in the office anytime and good luck with your brother today. Coach, just so you know, I'm playing next year but no promises after that, have a great day and thanks. I couldn't believe it I was exhausted by that phone call and was laying there when Bill came in and sat down. Mike, I'll understand if you can't do the rehab thing. I sat up and said dude, we are doing this together, I wish it was just the two of us but I can't drive. He said Mike please stand up, I owe you something. When I did he pulled my jeans down and my boxer briefs and started sucking my cock, he eased me to a sitting position on the bed and my cock never left his mouth. He looked up at me smiled and said well at least that isn't broke and went back on my cock. It was awesome and I grabbed his head and pulled him down till his mores was in my pubes. He didn't even gag. He moved my hands and went to work and I exploded in his mouth. He had a hard time as it was a massive load but he swallowed it all, looked up at me and smiled saying now bro we are even he pulled me to my feet gave me a hug and said get dressed we have to leave soon. Shit I need to call Carrie, she answered quickly asking how I was doing. I told her pretty good but could not concentrate on anything. I can't even read or watch TV. She said Mike, you scared the shit out of me. It was awful seeing you lay on the field not moving and that hit was way across the line. While he was ejected he should be in jail. Carrie, I have not seen the play and have no memory of much of the play. Bade, I'll call tonight after dinner, we have to get Bill to rehab. Babe I'm sorry, yet glad you we're worried about me, I love you. I cleaned up and went down stairs and Bill said Mike, let's go I'm driving and dad is meeting us there. I said what the fuck, how did you arrange that? He said I've been watching you and how you deal with dad and tried that approach and here we are. I laughed and said Bill the guy is toast. It wasn't a long drive as it was Sunday and there was no traffic. We talked about what he expected in rehab and said Mike, this time I have the feeling it's going to work. It's a lot of BS but you are the on that will make the difference. I will call you in the evening once I am permitted calls and I hope you will be able to visit soon. We got out and I walked him to the door, hugged and he said Mike please don't come in and he opened the door and calmly went inside. I went back to the car, found dad sitting behind the wheel, I got in said thanks dad both Bill and I needed that and I know it was tough being out of it. I fastened the seat belt leaned back, closed my eyes and started to cry. Dad leaned over put his arm around me and said Mike, big girls do cry and we hugged. I collected myself and turned on one of my switches and we started to talk about the business and the building. When we got home dad said Mike get some rest. I went to my room saw my book and started to read and after a few pages threw it on the floor as nothing made sense. I grabbed my headphones and hit play, didn't like the CD and turned to something softer and classical. I eventually fell asleep. I jumped whit a knock on the door and I said dad just come in. The door opened and in walks Dr. Collins. I said doc what brings you here? He said some banged up smart ass jock. I just laughed. He said Mike I want to run thru some baseline tests to see how you are at the very early stage. He touched his nose, pulled his ear and clapped once and said please remember those things I just did. He looked in my eyes, he had me follow his fingers and flashed a light in my eyes. Then there were some agility drills and coordination drills. Then he said Mike what were the three things I did when we started this and in order please. I said you clapped, pulled your ear and touched your nose. He laughed and said damn you are piece of work. You are better than I thought. What issues you having? Doc, concentrations. I'm reading that book over there and could only read a couple of pages and couldn't follow it at all. He picked up the book and said Mike, Tom Clancy? Most people can't follow that, but keep at it. Doc, I can't even watch TV and he said well then don't, it is the electronic screen that causes the problem. Mike, you are doing better than I expected as you were unconscious on the field for about 15 seconds, from what I could determine from the film. Physically you are very close to your baseline and the game you just played with the items I asked you to remember indicates that this will be a quick recovery. However, excepted for you "business meeting" on Monday you are grounded till further notice. No driving, limited phone calls, visitors after Tuesday limited to a few people. Please do what you need to do to relax. You can run starting Tuesday and workouts after Dr. Jenkins approves that and I'm betting as your workouts are so intense it will be a while, deal with it. We can simply throw your ass in the hospital, you are underage. Doc, thanks for stopping and I promise I'll be a good patient. I put my headphones on and that lasted about 10 minutes and Ryan came in and said Mike, lunch is ready, you eating downstairs or in your room? Ryan we are eating together down stairs if you don't mind. Ryan and I had a great lunch, discussing college classes and expectations. Then I asked, Ryan do you know any varsity athletes at Pitt? He said that he did a football guy and a baseball guy. Ryan are these guys gay? Mike, that's none of your fucking business, but what do you need? Ryan to meet the football guy, is that possible? Mike, I'll try but ever ask the gay question again. Ryan, that was stupid and that's a deal. There no hurry about setting up this meeting, I just need to get a read on college football. With that I went upstairs and picked up the book and went back a chapter to get a feel for things and was able to read for an hour and fell asleep. Comments are encouraged as this is my first story.
