Date: Tue, 17 Dec 2019 04:00:07 +0000 (UTC) From: Mike Simmons Subject: It was always about the bets 70 At home I found dad in the kitchen drinking coffee and he laughed and said Mike, I have a cure for that. I said really, I need it bad and he laughed and said the cure is tomorrow. I said don't be a smart shit, I'm not in the mood. I poured some coffee and sat down. Dad was in the mood to mess with me and I deserved that. I said dad I just did what three people told me to do. Ok Mike, I give up what we're you told? Dad, I was told to get with Jim and get shit faced drunk and that's what we did. So was it worth it? Dad absolutely, but it can't be a regular occurrence. Then I thought shit and I called Jim. He answered saying mailbox and hung up. I got up went to the mailbox and found the picture of us walking together after the game. I showed dad and he looked said damn. So dad, I asked where is my metal? He laughed and said I was wondering when you would remember that, he got up went to his office and handed me my championship metal. I went to the garage found a box and went upstairs and fifteen minutes later came down with a box full of trophies and deposited them in the basement. I rummaged around and found a frame the correct size and took the picture and the metal to my room and hung it above my desk and draped the metal over the corner. I stepped back and said I need a second metal for the other side. I set the alarm for 1:30 and promptly fell asleep on the sofa. That lasted until 1:00 and since I was awake I went upstairs and took a shower changed into clean jeans and a golf shirt, swallowed 4 aspirins and went down stairs. I thanked dad for understanding me and Bill meeting and for being a good sport about last night. I put on a winter coat that didn't fit, took it off put on a hoodie and asked dad what he was cooking for dinner. He laughed and said Mike, what do you want and I said anything but ribs and left. There was no traffic and the drive to the Rehab center went quickly. I pulled into the parking lot thinking about Bill and wishing I had a cigarette. Then I looked at the building and thought dude you are addicted to those things, get a grip. A few minutes before 2:00 I went inside and said I was visiting William Simmons and was given his room number. I knocked on the door and got a big smile and hug. I went in and sat in the chair and Bill sat on the bed leaving the door open. I simply said ok dude how the fuck are you and he smiled and seemed relaxed. We talked about him and how his days were and what he did in his spare time. Apparently he was writing another book and I asked for details and got nothing. He said the sessions with the therapist were going well and he is discovering a lot about himself and mom and dad and some asshole that he had punished for years. I laughed and said, Bill I never considered it punishment just that you were an asshole. He laughed and said that's putting it mildly. Then he turned to me and said dude if I did not know better you look hungover. I said I am very much hungover. I took the advice of some complete jerk and Jim and I got shit faced drunk last night, I must have had half a case of beer and scotch with dad before that. He shook his head and said so Mike did that work? It was my turn to laugh and I said absolutely, I have a real wingman. Then he asked about dad and I told him the story about how we caught each other having sex in our room and he almost fell off the bed laughing. Bill said Mike, let's go for a walk, I have not been outside all week, I agreed but was thinking damn it is fucking cold out there. He grabbed a light jacket and I had my hoodie and off we went. We talked about nothing in particular and he had to be freezing, as I was, we went around the corner and he grabbed me and gave me a big hug and said thanks for coming, I need you around me and would not get through this shit here without you. Bill I thought you were doing good and he said Mike, this is all a fucking game, like leaving the damn door open when I have guest and telling them what they want to hear. I pushed him away and said Bill you are scaring the shit out of me. Besides this costing a fucking fortune you need more than me. I'm not going to always be around. In fact there is college on the horizon and it looking like I'll be a six hour drive away. Mike, you are my brother and you scare the shit out of me and that's what I need. If I fuck up I know you will toast my ass. Bill, I won't be toasting your ass, I'll be shaking my head and let you fall flat on your ass and not picking you up. I'm hear you help, and support you but dude you are out of chances. Bill started to cry and said Mike that's exactly what scares me, I know you mean every word of that. Bill, for both our sakes fucking cooperate and get into this program, I'm begging. I said dude let's go inside and start doing this right, you must be freezing. He put his arm around my shoulder and we went back inside and sat in the common room. We talked for a while and there was an announcement that visiting hours were over. As I was leaving I was stopped by a staff member and taken to an office and asked to make my self comfortable. Bill's therapist came in introduced himself and I asked how Bill was doing. The answer scared me as I was told that they did not think he was doing very well at all. Things were going too well. I reminded him that he had been through this before and was a consummate game player. They asked for my thoughts and I said you guys seem to have things correct. Call him In tomorrow and tell him things are starting over and this is day one. Don't worry about the cost just focus him. Also, make it a point that he won't be able to see anyone until things change, but please keep me out of this. Once you get him straightened out I'll be all he needs for support. BTW he always look for the easy way out. I got up shook his hand and said thanks for the time and I drove home, feeling like shit. I got home and dad was in the kitchen with a drink and a cigarette. I went to the refrigerator grabbed the iced tea and sat down and reached for a cigarette and got my hand slapped. I laughed and said thanks dad. We talked about Bill and I told him that he was permitted a visitor not because of how well he was doing but to check their read on him. Dad tomorrow he will be told bluntly that he is a game player and that he wasted a week and that it all starts over, he is at day one and that will happen every week he continues to play games. Dad, that's exactly what he told me on our little walk and he tried to put it on me as his support. I nicely told him this was is last chance with me and if he fucks up again I would simply let him fall and walk away. Then I hugged dad and said thanks for letting me be a teenager yesterday, it was fun. With that I went upstairs and started on school work. After two hours I needed a break and called Carrie. She answered right away and asked, Michael are you ok? I said absolutely and her tone changed right away and I knew there was an issue and I thought shit, I have not talked with her since Friday night. I started with babe I'm sorry, I got up yesterday went for a run, worked out and had an all afternoon business meeting and then dad told me to get out of the house and go be a teenager. I called Jim and we simply hung out got shit faced and this morning I was hungover and I had to visit Bill and that did not go well. He is busy playing games and is starting the process over. I'm sorry I did not call you. I hate to say it but getting so drunk I could hardly walk was something Jim and I both needed. She said Mike thanks for the excuse laden rant, I'll see you in class tomorrow. Sleep well, I love you. I said I love you too and she hung up. I'm thinking what the fuck was that? I thought about it for a while and called her back and she answered quickly and I said is my girlfriend there or am I still talking to the bitch who answered her phone a few minutes ago. She said Michael, I know what you have been going through with the depression and the concussion and all and I was worried. Babe does your fucking phone call out? She said would you please put my boyfriend back on some jerk is using his phone and we both laughed. Then I said babe the fucking football is over and that takes a lot of pressure off me and I promised I'll be more relaxed. I just need Jim to settle on a girl and the four of us can hang out. Mike that might not be easy as he currently is playing with three girls, all of which just fuck jocks. Ok, babe I will have a chat tomorrow with him. He has been given new freedoms and he needs to use them responsibly. Babe, I had fun Friday night. Mike so did I especially when we ran into your dad and his friend in the hall. I laughed all night. Well babe I'll talk with Jim and see you in school, I'm looking forward to a normal week in school, whatever that is. Good night babe. I immediately called Jim and he said dude what's happening? I said did you have issues from our adventures last night? Just that dad said he is getting another case of beer and I have to pay for it and I laughed. So dude, I said, do you remember that I said I needed to get a social life and you agreed? He said yes, what brought that up? Jim, I talked with a couple of dudes on the team and I discovered my wingman is currently the jock fuck of the month. What does that mean he asked? It means you are involved with three different chicks all with the reputations of fucking any available jock, you are apparently the jock of choice. You good having that reputation, Jim I'm just asking? Mike, I'm having fun, is that an issue? Jim, not at all I just want you to know what reputation you are starting to get. By the way I put our picture over my desk and hung the metal on one side, and there is room for a second one. All the other shit I won is in the basement, see you tomorrow, good night. I worked for another half hour on math and went downstairs to visit with dad for a while. I grabbed a class of juice and sat down in his office. He had some thought about Bill. I said dad let's just let the professionals deal with him, they seem to have his number. As we were talking I reached for a cigarette and dad stoped talking and looked at me, he didn't say a word, just looked at me, I said thanks dad and put the cigarette back in the pack. I said dad I am hoping for a normal week, I'm going to run and start working out. Right after school where that slot for practice was will work, I'm going to start at school and if that doesn't work I'll just go to the gym. Dad then suggested I take a day off and go at it starting Tuesday. Dad why? Mike, I just want you around tomorrow so just run and we can spend the evening together, I promise no surprises just my time with my son. Ok, dad I'll run and be right home after last class. Good night, but please no surprises. Mike I promise. In my room as I set the alarm I saw a message from Jim. He said, dude, I get it. See you tomorrow. I took a deep breath and stripped and jumped into bed. I slept well and dressed warm and put coffee and went for a run and damn I suffered through the last mike and a half. I was thinking go ahead and have another cigarette. At home I grabbed the coffee and went to my room showered and dressed for school. At school I saw Rob in the parking lot and we chatted and it was off to class and Carrie met outside English and started what turned out to be a very normal day. Lunch was a blast and it was was Jim, Rob and Alex and I and the girls were at their own table and they seemed to have a great time as well. I looked around and saw Ray with a group of his friends and damn he was having a good time and I thought good for him. It was afternoon classes and I actually sat through gym and was asked why I was sitting as football was over, I figured shit I'll participate next class. There were only a few classes left as this was a semester class. After that I hurried to my car and drove straight home and damn, dad was already there. I went inside and he said Mike anything you want to do with your old man? Dad I don't give a shit but let's do it somewhere else. He said I was hoping you would feel that way and he threw two hockey tickets on the desk and said will that do? I said absolutely, is there time for dinner? He said I have reservations at the club. I said really dad? Mike, it's the igloo club and iced tea is exactly that. I said sure dad, that's not an issue. We chatted for a while and left for the arena. We got to the igloo club and it was awesome. There were a ton of important people there and I just sat and enjoyed the experience. I ordered iced tea and a Ruben sandwich and Fries and damn it was iced tea. Dad just looked at the expression on my face and said sorry guy, this is the real world. We were talking waiting for the food and there was a commotion at the door and the Mayor walked in. He made the rounds, shook a lot of hands. Then to my surprise he stopped at our table and dad introduced himself and me. The Mayor look at dad and said, do you mind if I sit for a minute? We gladly agreed and he said to dad are you the guy who made a silly offer on the plot of land on Second Avenue? Dad looked at me and I said Mr. Mayor that was me not my dad and he looked at me in total disbelief. Ok Mike, what's all this about? Well Mr. Mayor I own the adjacent property, or rather my Trust owns the property. Now I remember, you are the guy that caused all the issues by buying that 1 acre plot on Second Avenue. As I remember you got it for a great price, I replied it seems that way. He looked at me and asked, so how old are you and I said 17 and he shook his head. As he was getting up he said I seem to remember that a Mike Simmons wanted a meeting, is that you and I replied yes, sir it is. Well, I guess lunch is out as what are you are in high school? Again I said yes, sir. He sat back down and he looked at me for a minute and said congratulation on the championship. I simply replied thanks. Then I said Mr. Mayor that plot of land I bought in your city is for a new building to house MJS Technologies. Mike, that's a lot for a young guy to accomplish. Dad saw the look on my face and started to say something and I beat him to it. Mr. Mayor, I'm about to invest through my Trust almost 20 million dollars in your city and I thought you might want to see first hand what's going on and what will happen. I am a very good elite athlete, I work hard if you haven't noticed by simply looking at me. I have offers from 5 schools to play football and yes I am young. However you should understand that all that does not mean I am stupid or too young to do what I am doing. The proposed building will use elements in its design that reflect the heritage of the area. If you want to know those elements have your staff research Carnegie, Ford and not Henry, Pitcarin. The Mayor, said well I guess I hit a nerve. Well Mike, I'm sorry if I offended you but damn you are a surprise and a tough son of a bitch. Well Mr. Mayor enjoy your evening and I said dad let's watch some hockey. With that I got up and we found our seats. Dad looked at me and said well Mike that was entertaining. I said sorry dad, let's enjoy the game. At the intermission dad went into the club to get a drink and to my surprise the Mayor materialized saying Mike, I swapped seats with your dad for a period, I hope that's acceptable. Sure Mr. Mayor we both got off to a bad start and I would like to start over, I'm Mike Simmons and he laughed and said I'm Pete Flaherty and my friends call me Pete. Well Mr. Flaherty what can I do for you and he shook his head. Mike, all the cards on the table, I had staff run a very quick check on you. Shit, I underestimated you and took you for a young punk here with your dad who forced you to be here tonight. Well Mayor, all the cards on the table, personally you are not as good as your public image. I looked at him and said some new start we just offended each other again and he just burst out laughing. Mike you are different than any high school I have ever met, I said Mayor that correct and you are the only Mayor I have ever met so I'm out of my depth. Now he really laughed and said kid, I doubt that you are ever out of your depth. Mayor let's quit the dancing around, why are you sitting next to me? Mike, you were right if you and your Trust is investing 20 million I should know about it. Mayor then you should know I bought the land, fired the largest real estate firm in the area, hired an architect and a construction company and designs will be finished by the end of the week and I have more prospective tenants than we can accommodate. Then someone offered us an opportunity to buy the adjacent plot of land for a very silly price, and I countered with an equally silly offer and here the two of us sit. Mike, I have no idea how I walked into this tonight and yes I was totally unprepared. I just stopped at you table to say hello and things started to register. Mike, I'll have my people get to your attorney and set up a meeting, how about Saturday and lunch at Oakmont, Mayor I would rather play golf but as it is winter, lunch will be fine. He got up to leave and I said Pete, thanks and I'm not always this miserable. He sat back down and said Mike, what other lines should I not cross and I said Pete just never question my integrity. He got up again and said Mike, I'll see you Saturday. Dad came back and I asked so who is winning the game? He laughed and said it is tied 2-2. So what happened and I said you, Tim and I have lunch at Oakmont Saturday. Dad let's watch the game Pete and I are on speaking terms. He handed me a paper cup and I looked in and said I've never had scotch in a paper cup. We finally enjoyed the game but the Penguins lost 4-3. As we drove home dad said so Mike, I'm betting tomorrow your offer gets accepted and the zoning issues are resolved for both properties. I said dad, that might happen but we are never betting and he laughed. It was late when we got home and I just climbed into bed and said shit I didn't call Carrie tonight, there will be hell to pay for that. It will be what it becomes.
