The officer again catches the crew on break. "Damn," he says, "I'm goanna switch jobs. All you guys do is mess around." This time Mike is taken to main police headquarters, where he meets a detective named Winslow. Susannah had told him that Winslow had questioned her the day before. "Friday is the Pilgrims' `day of preparation,'" Winslow tells him, "so we probably have a better chance of finding who we're looking for. There'll be a hell of a lot of activity around their h.q." They take an unmarked car and head into Ole Town. They park about a half block from the entrance to the building that houses the Pilgrim offices. It is directly across the street from the tabernacle. They sit for nearly an hour, before Winslow starts the engine and meanders around the block, finally pulling into another parking place. "Need to try to be inconspicuous," he explains. They sit for another half hour, until Mike alerts the detective. "There she is, coming out of the office." Quickly Winslow opens the car door and overtakes the tall woman with the stoop. "Sister Jane?" he calls. "Yes?" Flashing his i.d. he says, "Detective Winslow, Metropolitan Police. You're under arrest." "Arrest? What on earth for?" "Accomplice to rape. Come with me peacefully, and I won't have to cuff you." Back at the police station, Winslow and his partner begin Sister Jane's interrogation. She considers asking to call Brother Jennings and getting a lawyer, but decides to wait. When she discovers that her suspicion is correct, that the subject of the alleged rape is Susannah, she is glad that she hasn't acted. But she doesn't know what evidence the police have, so she claims ignorance of anything having happened. "We know that Jacob Jennings raped the girl," Winslow tells her, "and we know that you watched the rape. We have evidence that can convict him. Your testimony will strengthen our case, and if you choose to testify against Jennings, the prosecutor will be more than lenient with you. Otherwise, the odds are good that you will be convicted of being an accomplice, and the penalty for that is the same as if you, yourself, were the rapist. Life without parole. Susannah will testify that you brought her to your home, where Jennings came and fucked her against her will. We can prove that she was a virgin beforehand. And we have the report from the medical examination after the rape occurred." Winslow hoped that she would assume that they had physical evidence. And that is exactly what she decides. She is also still convinced that Brother Jennings knows nothing about Jacob's sexual activities, and would not be pleased if he found out. Winslow's partner also questions her about the ages of the other girls Jacob had fucked. "Yes, we know about the Magdalene Society," he says, "and if any of the girls Jacob fucked were not menstruating when they were initiated, that is statutory rape. And you would also be an accomplice in those cases." They give Sister Jane plenty of time to think. Meanwhile, Jacob Jennings discovers that Sister Jane is nowhere to be found, but it never occurs to him that she in police custody. While Sister Jane is contemplating the mess she's in, Winslow returns to Ole Town and visits Elbert Castle, the doctor that first examined Susannah. He is careful not to reveal the reason for his inquiry, and the doctor is reluctant to divulge the results of his examination. But he is reminded that his license to practice could be in danger if he doesn't cooperate with the authorities. He confirms that Susannah had been a virgin when he examined her, and since his office hours are over, he agrees to come to police headquarters and sign an affidavit. At headquarters the police make sure that Sister Jane gets a glimpse of the doctor walking down the hall. That turns out to be the decisive moment for her. For some reason, she feels that they must have solid evidence, or the Pilgrim doctor wouldn't be cooperating. She also has been mulling over what happened when Jacob attacked Susannah, Susannah's reaction, and how she, herself, had been repulsed by Jacob's behavior. She asks to see her interrogators again. "I will give evidence," she says simply. Winslow and his partner lead her through the whole story, going all the way back to the founding of the Society of Mary Magdalene, getting the names of all the girls who had been inducted, and retracing the events of July 2 in minute detail. "He said over and over, `You will love this as Mary did,'" Sister Jane reports, "and she's sobbing like a baby! "I tried to comfort her, but nothing I said seemed to help." Sister Jane signs her statement, is thanked for her help. She is booked, but released on her own recognizance. She is also offered protective custody if she wants it. She refuses, but also says she feels much better about the whole thing now that she's made a clean breast of it. Upon returning to Ole Town, the doctor calls Jacob to let him know that the police have asked about his examination of Susannah. "Since you had requested the exam, I thought you should know I'd been contacted," he said. "She's run away again," Jacob tells him. "Probably has gotten herself into some sort of trouble. Wages of sin is death." Weston is about to leave the office when he receives a call from Winslow. "Good news," he says, "Sister Jane cracked. She's confirmed everything. We'll take Jennings into custody tomorrow morning. We've also got the names of all the other girls he's fucked. We'll be checking to see about statutory rape charges there. That'll be pretty hard to prove, even if it happened. But we'll see." "Good work," the prosecutor responds. "I'd treat Jennings like he's a high flight risk. Don't let him make bond until the pretrial. We'll try to schedule that sometime next week...as late in the week as possible." They both laugh. Weston immediately calls the mayor. Mike has a couple of beers with his buddies but still gets home earlier than usual on a Friday, because he wants to tell Susannah they'd taken Sister Jane in. They don't know that Jane has agreed to cooperate, but Mike is still excited that he was able to identify her. He's got to get to the club, but he takes time to enjoy the taste of her hole, before he leaves. Their oral pleasures are becoming pretty routine, and she says that she's been reading more of his b-screens. She's finding them exciting. At Anything Goes he learns that the mayor has called Stiles and told him that Sister Jane would testify. Mike and Ashby are both elated. "I can't wait for that motherfucker to be sent up and have every dude in the fucking prison ram him in his lousy dry ass," Ashby exults. Copyright 2012 by Macout Mann. All rights reserved.
