So it was upstairs to the roof and there were a fair number of guys up there, Andrew among them. He just nodded when he saw me. He was in a conversation with a couple of the other guys so I just left it alone. I found a place to sit and people came and were asking me how my weekend had gone. Dana even stopped to talk to me. "Just so you know Jeff, I'll be going back to work next week. I'll get everything I owe paid back to you and again, thanks for stepping in with the owner and with Julius." "Good to hear and you're welcome. Andrew giving you any problems?" "Nope hasn't said two words to me. Guess he's going to let his lawyers do his talking for him." "Any idea where that stands?" "Nope. I told your guy just to handle it. If it sounds fair just run it by me before anybody signs anything." "It's how I usually let them handle things." "Jeff, have you given any thought to our getting together?" "It will happen at some point Dana, but not I think while Andrew is still in the building." "I'm going to hold you to that Jeff. It's just what another two weeks?" "Yeah about that." "Think his place will be empty long?" "Nope." There was no need to mention that one of the officers had already shown interest. "I figure it shouldn't take more than a week after I get it cleaned even though I know Andrew has kept it spotless." "Yeah, I can't imagine him letting anything go. So the nephews home all safe and sound?" "Yeah." "And?" "I think they found out what they needed to." "And?" "Dana you should know better than to ask me a question like that." "While I'll admit they're too young at this point, but they take after their uncle. When they're old enough......" "It will still be their decision, Dana." "Absolutely, though with some of the questions they were asking I've got a feeling I already know the answer." "Don't want to know Dana." "Ok Jeff, you have a good night. I'm calling it." "Good night Dana." I just hung out for a while and then headed down and crashed for the night. The next morning I made arrangements for the cleaning crew once Andrew moved out and then got to work on the halls. After lunch, I went and did something I hadn't done in the last couple of weeks with all that had been going on. I hit the gym. Just my luck the first person I ran into was Greg Wilkins, second only to Calvin in my personal pantheon of turkeys. "Well well look who's back. Tired of looking at the same old boys in the building Jeff?" "Are you ever going to grow up Greg?" I didn't wait for an answer but went to my locker to change up. Naturally, Greg followed me. "You don't talk to me like that twerp." "I shall continue to speak as I please Greg." "Care to try and back that up?" "What get in the ring with you? Greg, you've got an inch in height and at least two in reach over me. I'd have to be a complete moron to get in the ring with you." "That's what I thought chicken shit." Greg had tried to goad me into fighting him for a couple of years now, and deep down I knew it wouldn't stop until I got in the ring with him. Now I had watched him over the years and I knew he had a few weaknesses that I could probably exploit, and I was a hell of a lot faster than he was. "Having said that, get your gear on Greg." The surprised look on his face was enough to tell me he had never expected me to take him up. I borrowed some headgear and whatever else I needed and got the gloves on. "3 rounds if you survive that long twerp." When we stepped into the ring damn near everything else in the gym came to a halt and they all gathered around. Greg had never seen me fight so I had a bit of an advantage. That and Greg thought he had it all over me at least gave me a fighting chance. We touched our gloves and went to our corners. The bell was rung and I moved towards the center of the ring. Greg for all of his confidence was being cautious. He made a couple of probing jabs which I either blocked or sidestepped. Greg took a big swing at my head and I got underneath it and landed a couple of good blows to his stomach. It must have surprised him as he let his guard down just long enough for me to land one on his jaw. That apparently stunned him enough that I had enough of an opening to just keep landing punches on him until the bell rang for the first round. I went to my corner and one of the guys had appointed himself my corner man. "Remind me not to piss you off Jeff." "Oh I'm not pissed, I'm just trying to survive, and I think the only thing I've done is piss him off." Oh yeah, I could see the anger in Greg's eyes that I had even laid a glove on him once, let alone several times. But now he had some idea of my style and he was angry. That could make him either dangerous or stupid. I was hoping for stupid. The bell rang and we were on to round 2. Greg was throwing punches all over the place. I caught a couple to the ribs and one to the head. That was going to leave a bruise at the very least and I knew I'd have some explaining to do later on. I did get in a couple of good shots to his stomach once again, and the bell rang for the end of round 2. I got back to my corner. "I think you're wearing him down a bit Jeff." "Hey at this point I'll settle for surviving." The bell and it was on to round 3. Greg had gotten his confidence back that last round and he was acting cocky. He was dancing around almost daring me to try and hit him. I watched how he was moving and when I saw my opening coming I hauled off and slugged him. He went to his knees so I backed off. He got up and looked at me and there was murder in his eyes. For the rest of the round I simply tried to stay away from him and he was having none of it. Just before the bell rang I got another opening. So it was a double punch, this first to the stomach and the followup to his jaw and Greg went down. The bell rang and I was declared the winner. Well, you can imagine how well that sat with Greg. He got up and charged me and seeing as I wasn't bound by the rule of boxing anymore, I delivered a roundhouse kick that put him out. I could see that he was still breathing so I didn't hang around after that and decided to stay away from the gym for a while. There were other ways to work out, or other gyms to do it at. I didn't even bother to shower. I just got dressed and got out of there, but not without a few comments being made. "About time somebody put him in his place." "I've been waiting to see something like that for quite a while." "Better watch your back, Jeff." I made my way back to the building and got into my apartment unseen. I hit the shower and when I got a look at myself in the mirror, I did indeed have some impressive bruises, one of which was right on my cheek and was sure to be spotted. I checked my email after that and there wasn't anything in either account that needed attention. There was a knock on my door and I went to answer it. It was Bob from 3a. "Hey Jeff I... whoa! What the hell happened to you?" "Fight at the gym. I finally heard enough from one guy and stepped into the ring with him." "And how does he look?" "No idea didn't stick around long enough to find out. What can I do for you today Bob?" "Just wanted to let you know that the building in general has no objections to us trying to adopt." "So when should I expect Family services?" "Not for a while I'd guess. We don't get to go in for an interview for at least a week." "Well please give me a heads up when you know." "Absolutely. You're going to have fun explaining that one to the guys tonight." "Yeah well do me a favor and don't be giving me any bear hugs for a couple of days. The bruises along the ribs are even more gorgeous." "What kind of shape is the other guy in?" "He was still trying to walk straight when I left." "Did he deserve what he got?" "As far as I'm concerned he did." "Ok, later Jeff." I went and put my feet up for a while and later got myself some supper. I then figured I might just as well go up to the roof and get the ribbing over with.
