Comments mailto:preecherdave@gmail.com This chapter is a bit shorter but I ended it at what I thought was a good moment. Previously They had a great week together. They had taken Thomas and Liam to some of the tourist spots in the area. Thomas couldn't stop talking about the small zoo of rescued animals. They had a great lunch at the hotel where Robert's dads had gone on July 2nd so many years ago when Timothy had finally come out to his father (Unexpected Five Years on 9). Robert realized again how lucky he was. Grand-pere Malenfant was so different now and Robert loved every moment he shared with him. It was with sadness that they waved goodbye on Sunday morning as the guys headed back to Buffalo. There was an invitation to come up to the chalet on the Labour Day weekend if they wanted. Robert and Lucas knew that the guys might have other things that they would want to do in Buffalo but they did give the invitation telling them that the family and friends would be there and that it would be a great weekend. Robert and Lucas took off for the city about an hour after Thomas and Liam had left. As it turned out, most of Robert's staff would come up to the chalet on various days the next week. All had taken the Monday to stay at home and relax. Robert had asked Mark to come in for Monday morning for an hour or so to discuss the idea of new office space and new hires. Lucas and Robert wanted to replenish the drinks and get some special food for the week. It had been a very productive few weeks at work and with their friends. They were looking forward to the next week with the staff at the chalet. Present Robert outlined to Mark his thoughts on the office and the staff. Robert could almost hear the gears changing in Mark's head. This was the Mark whom he had hired and he had really fitted into to his job as office manager and second in command. Robert realized that he would have to find a new title and role for Mark if Robert's plans for a new office and more staff worked out. "Boss, thank you for including me in your decision making. We are definitely going to need more staff and more space. Is there any chance that we could stay in this building? It is so handy having The Accountants here for us and for you with Lucas so close. Lucas really has a good feel for business as you do." "That is why I wanted to speak to you today. I would like to make an appointment with the manager of the building and see if there are any office space open or opening in the next month or two. In fact after we have a bit of brain storming, I might contact them while you are here." "Good idea boss. Changing offices is a major step for us as a young company." "I would like you to think about one of the major questions when we get new offices. You might want to ask the staff for their preferences. They won't make the decision but I would like their input. Do they prefer an open concept office or one with their own cubicles/offices? I certainly want one room that is a conference room where we can hold private interviews and which can be used by anyone who doesn't want to disturb the office. I also want some offices for team leaders like you. I have some ideas on that as well. We are going to need more staff and I want to appoint team leaders who will take charge of their area." Mark and he discussed the options in detail. Again, Robert was pleased with how Mark contributed to the discussion. He was pleased that he had talked to Mark. By the end of their talk, Robert made arrangements to meet with the manager who would deal with them when they made their decision on new offices. There were in fact some firms moving out and there was one space open at that time. Robert set up a meeting on the Tuesday two weeks away. He would need next week to finalize some of his plans. Robert and Lucas finished buying what they wanted for the week knowing that there was a large supermarket about 20 minutes from the chalet if there was anything that they really needed. It was a beautiful evening when they arrived at the chalet with some takeout food from one of their favourite restaurants. Sitting in the screened in porch with their food and bottle of wine, Robert looked out at the lake. They had looked at the weather for the week. No rain was projected for the week and the temperatures would be in the high 20s and low 30s, a perfect summer week at the chalet. They knew that this evening would be their last night alone for quite a while. Robert put his arm over Lucas' shoulder. "Thanks for all the work that you have done over the last months, years really. I can't even imagine all the things that we have done since that first morning when I came back to our room after breakfast that August as we met and were getting ready for trying out for the hockey team. Let's not forget what is most important, us. We have taken on a lot of important responsibilities. You are head of the forensic division of The Accountants and I am CEO of a small but growing computer firm." Lucas interrupted. "Robbie, you are marketing the best computer software for forensic accounting. You have had a vision for several years and you have done it." "Right but I couldn't have done it without you, my rock. Let's always remind each other that we have responsibilities but the only really important thing is us together. I know that is what has made Jamie and Philipo and my Dad and Papa such wonderful couples and so successful." They looked at each other. Lucas smiled. "We are going to be inundated with staff this week. I would like to go down to the dock and swim out to the raft. I want to get the city and all that that means out of us for tonight. Just you and me." "You know I call you smart ass a lot of the time. What you just said has to be one of the most wonderful things that I have heard for a long time. Let's do it. Get the city and all our responsibilities out of us tonight. Just you and me." The water was refreshing. They lay on the raft until the sun was setting. It was still warm and the water felt great as they swam back to the dock. They decided that they would get the boat ready the next morning. They went in and sat side by side as they watched a movie from the satellite dish. By the time the movie was over they couldn't have sat closer together. Both had hands on each other's thighs. They looked at each other and at the same time, they leaned forward and kissed. The kiss ignited the feelings that they had for each other that night. They lost themselves in the other. They didn't leave the couch until they were finished. Lucas stood up and he pulled Robert up and into him. They could feel each other as they slowly deflated. They walked naked with arms around each other to the bedroom. Robert looked at Lucas. "Please remind me about this evening if you ever have to. Lucas, I can't imagine being with anyone else. You make me whole." They were up early the next morning. After breakfast on the porch, they went down and spent some time getting the boat ready for water skiing. Just before noon, they heard a car turn in the driveway. Mark and Phoebe jumped out at the same time. Each surveyed the area and then smelled the air. As Lucas and Robert came out of the chalet, Phoebe spoke up, "Boss, this place is amazing. I can smell the cedar trees and the freshness of the water. This isn't just a chalet; it's a family compound. I see how you could invite the entire staff." "Let's have something to eat and then you can water ski or swim out to the raft. It is going to be a beautiful day. You are the only ones arriving today so you can do what ever you want. Mark, I know that you have never water skied before; today would be a good chance to try. We'll coach you and get you started." Mark spoke up. "I have never tried but I am a winter skier so while it is different, I should be able to manage it. I can hardly wait." Phoebe smiled. "We didn't discus this but some of my relatives have a cottage and I have been water skiing for quite a while. I am not good but I can get up and stay up." She looked at Robert and Lucas. "Oh, I can do a few things but not like what I imagine that you guys can do." They unpacked their car. "Guys, you didn't have to bring lunch. We have lots to eat." "Boss, Phoebe and I talked about this. We wanted to help out. We went to our favourite delicatessen and we have lunch ready for all of us." Robert smiled at Mark. This was the new Mark, definite and determined. Robert did what his dads had taught him: be graceful in defeat. "Thanks guys, we can use our food tomorrow. I love deli food. Perfect for summer eating. We have lots of beer, wine, juices and soft drinks. Your choice." Lucas had watched and listened. When Mark and Phoebe were getting the food ready. Lucas went over and put his arm over Robert's shoulder. "Nicely done. You really are learning how to be the Boss." He pulled him close and then let him go. Robert gave him a little smile. The meal was delicious. They decided to rest for a bit after lunch and then do some swimming and water skiing. Like most visitors to the chalet, they all swam out to the raft. There was the usual splashing each other and throwing people off the raft but they finally lay on it and talked. Finally, Mark stood up. "OK I want to try the skis. I know that I will make an ass of myself but I don't care." They all heard the whisper `nice ass' from Phoebe. No one could hold back their laughter, even Mark looked shy but there was a lovely smile as he looked at Phoebe. Robert thought to himself that it was a nice ass but his guy's was better. Mark asked for the details on how to get up when the boat started to speed out of the dock area. He was strong and athletic and made it look easy getting up. He made a couple of passes left and right. He had a look of real joy on his face as they turned towards the bay. He did a really good dismount and arrived to the dock to a big kiss from Phoebe. It was Phoebe's turn. She was all business as she jumped in the water and readied herself. She finally yelled out that it was OK to go. She was up quickly. She only took a few seconds to get herself ready. They all watched her with a mixture of surprise and amazement. She did trick after trick. Finally she was behind the boat and pointed to shore. Robert and Lucas got out of the boat. Robert looked at Phoebe. "I quote you. `I can get up and stay up.' That was an amazing performance." "Well, I did say that I had been doing this for many years." Looking at Robert and Lucas. "Don't we get a chance to see you guys perform?" Robert and Lucas looked at each other. Lucas spoke up. "Alright, after that performance, I suggest that my guy should see if he can get up and stay up." Robert was thinking quickly. He wanted to show that he was pretty good on skis but he did want Phoebe to shine for a while. He told Lucas what he wanted to do. He performed most of the things that Phoebe had done. He was enjoying himself. He decided that he would perform one last trick and it would be a winner. He knew that he shouldn't do it but he couldn't stop himself. He held up his hand for one more trick and indicated that he wanted a tight turn of the boat. The trick was amazing. When he dismounted and swam to the dock. It was Phoebe who pulled him up. "Boss, that was incredible. Yes, you can get up and stay up." Robert looked at her. "I couldn't help myself. I was having fun and I did want to do one good move. I know how competitive Lucas can be; I guess I am too. I think that we should let him have a go." Phoebe looked at him. "You competitive?" She smiled. "Boss, you could not be anything else: starting a business and marketing a ground breaking piece of business software. It must be in your blood and your genes." "Thanks Phoebe. I think that you and your partner will help to keep me grounded." He looked at Lucas. "Okay, Lucas, your turn to shine. I'll drive and Phoebe will be at the back of the boat. He saw the look in Lucas face. From the look on his face, there was no doubt that Lucas was competitive. It was going to be something very special or a complete disaster. Lucas was strong and had learned a lot since that first Thanksgiving, five years ago. He was good but he still had some things to learn. Robert took the boat into the lake and Lucas started some practice runs. Finally he gave the same signal that Robert had given. Robert made the same sharp turn that Lucas had made for him. Over the roar of the engine, he felt the change in the boat and heard Phoebe's shout `man down'. He turned and saw Lucas in the water waiting for the boat to bring back the rope and handle. Lucas looked at Robert as he slowed down and came within a safe distanc "Don't you say a thing. Let me get back up. I want to try it again. Don't laugh at me or you will be cut off for a week." They both heard Phoebe's laugh and the `oh boy, now that is a threat'. Then she yelled. "Glad that he's not competitive." Lucas, shaking his head, "I heard that Phoebe." She just laughed harder. Lucas was back up on the skis. He did a few things and then gave the signal. It wasn't the prettiest trick but he stayed up and look triumphant. They enjoyed the rest of the day and when they played some cards in the evening, they really saw Lucas at his competitive best. Smartly, Robert had made no comments on Lucas water skiing so he was not cut off for the week and certainly not for that night. They had the morning swim which everyone seemed to enjoy. In the late morning, Edward and Geoffrey arrived. It seemed that everyone was doing the same thing; they brought lunch for all with them. The guys were not going to have to buy any extra food. They had a great lunch on the front porch and then they were all down at the water. Geoffrey had never water skied before. Edward said that his family had a cottage and a boat much like the one at the chalet. He said that he done some water skiing. Mark had really enjoyed his time the day before so he volunteered, as being new at water skiing, to show Geoffrey how to get up. Everyone was impressed with how well Mark instructed Geoffrey. Geoffrey was awkward but he was athletic and looked quite good. He did fall on one pass behind boat and did a great job of getting back up with the instructions from the Lucas in the boat. He got an enthusiastic reception back at the dock. Edward was next. From just the way he acted, Robert knew that he was going to be the star of the afternoon. Edward had become one of the stars in the business. He surprised them every day by his perceptive suggestions and his knowledge base. His work on Forensic+ had been excellent. Robert had been surprised how nonchalant he was about his relationship with Geoffrey. In the words of the slogans, he was out and proud. Robert reminded himself again that he must write or call Charles Hunter to tell him how successful his suggestion had been. Edward's skiing had certainly impressed Phoebe. After his action on the skis, Phoebe could not stop talking to him about what he had done. At one point, Robert had glanced over at Geoffrey and he saw the love and pride that Geoffrey had for Edward. Phoebe had a very good time showing off what she could do and Robert followed her with a stellar performance. They had a great evening and Friday went well. Just before supper, they heard a car coming up the road. Robert was pretty sure that it was his dads who said that they might leave early on the Friday. His Dad was driving and his Papa jumped out the SUV. He, like many people, closed his eyes and took a deep breath, "I love the smell of the cedars and the lake. It is so good to be out of the city." Geoffrey and Edward had just come up from a swim and as they crested the hill, Robert heard from Geoffrey a not so subtle, "Oh, shit." Robert turned around and looked at him. Geoffrey looked at Robert. "That, that's my boss, the senior partner in the firm. Why ... how ... is he here?" Robert started to laugh. "You know, you have always called me Boss. I knew where you worked but never thought anything about it. I am Robert Malenfant. Mr. Malenfant is my father or as I call him Papa. He owns the chalet. Just wait, give me a second." Robert went over and hugged his Dad and then his Papa. He explained the situation to Papa. As usual, Timothy took over. He went directly over to Geoffrey. "Geoffrey, welcome to the chalet. I am so glad that you could make it. I understand that you are with Edward." He turned to Edward. "Edward, I have heard some very good things about you from Robert and Lucas. I am so glad that you and Geoffrey could make it." He turned back to Geoffrey. "I also know that you are one of our best, new lawyers. I am so glad that you could come. So how was the water skiing this afternoon?" Geoffrey spoke up. "Sir, Edward was incredible. I tried it for the first time and I really want to go again. It was great. Thank for sharing your weekend with us." "My pleasure. Now Jeremy and I want to change and then eat. I'm starved." Meanwhile, Robert was talking to his father. "Dad, Lucas just happened to mention last night that Mr. Marchese-Milner had made a small change in the forensic section. You know, I told him a few weeks ago that he was going to be heading the section in the near future. I am so happy for him." "He has become one of my best. I think that he has developed a lot of self confidence. Part of that comes from working on Forensic+ and also his work with Michael Burtchell. He has a great way of dealing with everyone in the section. There may be a few ruffled feathers but he and I talked about it and he has come up with some solutions. Again, as Jamie said to me a long time ago, Jamie, myself. Lucas ... and you, were all about the same age when we started to take charge. He asked me not to tell you until he told you. I can imagine your reaction." Smiling and looking innocent. "It was multifaceted." Jeremy hugged his son and laughed. "You do have a way with words." He smiled at him again. "I think that Papa is hungry and I need to get changed." Jeremy put his arm over his son's shoulder as they walked to the chalet. Robert felt like a child whose dad was giving him comfort. No, on second thought, it was his father telling him how much they appreciated and respected each other. Again an errant thought went back to Thomas and Liam; Robert hoped that they might eventually have as good a relationship with Ron Corbett as Lucas and he had with their parents. Geoffrey soon lost any problems that he might have had with staying at his bosses chalet. He was almost as competitive as Lucas when he played cards. Robert had looked over at Edward several times when Geoffrey won hands. There was a lovely look of pride and pleasure on Edward's face as he watched his guy. Again, Robert thought to himself that he should send an email to Charles Hunter tomorrow. Helene arrived early the next morning with an attractive man. She introduced David (pronounced the French way). Later as Lucas was taking their suitcases to one of the cabins, he asked her in French if these arrangements were OK. She had smiled, looked at the room with one double bed and said that it was exactly what they wanted. Lucas smiled to himself as he remembered what Robert had thought about when she had looked at them after her interview. She had rebounded well. It was an amazing day. Robert could hear conversations going on in English and French all day. He was surprised how well Edward and Geoffrey spoke French. He tucked that piece of information into his brain. Robert finally made the time to write to Charles Hunter Charles, I hope that your summer is going well. Please give my best regards to Emile. I wanted to let you know that I have hired Edward. He has become one of my best hires. He is everything that you suggested except in one way. He is not in the least shy in the office or at his leisure. He has become one of my team leaders. He has taken on jobs which he told me at his interview that he didn't like doing but has done them exceptionally well. In addition, he has met a young man who happens to be a young lawyer in my father's law firm. It is clear that Edward is out and proud. I have invited all the staff up for the week at the chalet and Edward and Geoffrey are obviously totally enamoured with each other. Their relationship reminds me of Lucas and myself in those first months. Our firm is doing very well. The sales for Forensic+ are still coming in and Lucas and I shall be presenting Forensic+ in St. Louis in September to more potential users. We are now in the process of restructuring our firm as we finally have clients in the city that are using our services of setting up their computer infrastructure and creating their web sites. We are planing on expanding and setting up in new offices with more hires. I am keeping my fingers crossed that we can keep growing. So far, so good. Don't forget that you have an invitation to come to the chalet on the Labour Day weekend or Thanksgiving. Have a great rest of the summer. I am indebted to you for all your advice and help over the years. Our best wishes (from both of us) Robert and Lucas Robert was pleased that he had finally thanked his mentor for his help. He heard talk in the next room of people who wanted to water ski. His dads were talking enthusiastically about running the boat and then taking their turn. Typical of his fathers, they realized that Lucas and he had been entertaining for almost two weeks and Robert admitted to himself that he would like some time alone with Lucas. He searched out Lucas. "I don't feel like water skiing or running the boat. My dads seem to be keen to do it. Let's go for a run. I want some time with you. We have been entertaining in one way or another for almost two weeks." They yelled out their `good skiing' as they disappeared running down the beach neither wanting to be beaten by the other. They arrived at the boat docking road and they slowed down and stopped. Robert looked at his guy with a smile. "We aren't competitive at all. Are we?" Smart ass had an answer. "I didn't want to beat you so I went slowly." With that Robert, turned and sprinted down the road. Lucas caught up and that made Robert run even faster. Finally at the place where they had stopped at that first magical time when Lucas first came to the chalet (Unexpected Robert 4), Robert stopped. "Lucas, I want to do what we did the first time that we stopped here. We talked and then ...." He stopped talking, pulled Lucas in and kissed him. It was long and became very sensual. They broke the kiss. Lucas looked at him almost gasping for breath. "What brought that on?" "Don't you remember? At this place, you learned who Grandpa Jamie was and then we sat on the fallen tree and I told you about Anna. You looked so defeated when I mentioned Anna. Then if I remember, I decided to speak with action not words and I kissed you (Unexpected Robert 4)." Robert smiled at Lucas. "As I said, we have been entertaining for almost two weeks. I need to tell you something with actions again. Also if I remember, we raced back to the chalet. We were sweating and hot and decided to have a shower. We said a lot to each other in that shower and after." He raised his eyebrows. Lucas remembered. He turned and yelled `last one to the chalet is on wash up detail'. They ran as they did that Thanksgiving almost five years ago and it ended again in a dead heat. With smiles on their faces, they walked to the chalet with arms around each other and went directly to the bathroom. They undressed each other scanning the other's body. They were bigger with more muscle mass now but still without a gram of fat. They fondled each others wonderful butt as they had years before. They cleaned each other thoroughly and went to their bedroom. As they did five years before, they eventually took each other in their mouths and unlike five years previously, they finished only seconds apart and they kissed the other, tasting the others essence. There were no words necessary. The memories and actions did speak more than words. They held each savouring this time together and all that they had `said'.
