I am going to take a break for December and January and perhaps longer to recharge the batteries and write some new chapters. Have a great Christmas season and for those of us in the north of the northern hemisphere, enjoy the winter. Previously "Don't you remember? At this place, you learned who Grandpa Jamie was and then we sat on the fallen tree and I told you about Anna. You looked so defeated when I mentioned Anna. Then if I remember, I decided to speak with action not words and I kissed you (Unexpected Robert 4)." Robert smiled at Lucas. "As I said, we have been entertaining for almost two weeks. I need to tell you something with actions again. If I remember correctly, we raced back to the chalet. We were sweating and hot and decided to have a shower. We said a lot to each other in that shower and after." Lucas remembered. He turned and yelled `last one to the chalet is on wash up detail'. They ran as they did that Thanksgiving almost five years ago and it ended again in a dead heat. With smiles on their faces, they walked to the chalet with arms around each other and went directly to the bathroom. They undressed each other looking at the other. They were bigger with more muscle mass now but still without a gram of fat. They fondled each others wonderful butt as they had years before. They cleaned each other thoroughly and went to their bedroom. As they did five years before, they eventually took each other in their mouths and unlike five years previously, they finished only seconds apart and they kissed the other, tasting the others essence. There were no words necessary. The memories and actions did speak more than words. They held each savouring this time together and all that they had `said'. Present Timothy smiled at the guys when they emerged from the family cabin and came in to the porch. "You needed that run and the rest. We had a great time with your staff. You really do have an excellent group. From what you said, after Charles Hunter suggested a shy but excellent computer technology student, Edward is not what you expected." "We have made some really excellent hires. Edward was the surprise. I emailed Charles Hunter yesterday and told him how great his suggestion was to hire Edward." "It was a surprise to meet Geoffrey here with Edward. He is one of our best, new, young lawyers. They are totally smitten with each other. They remind me of Dad and myself and you and Lucas when we all first met. It was wonderful and luckily, I think that I can speak for all of us, it still is." He walked over and put his arm over his son's shoulder. "I suspect everyone one will be hungry after all the physical effort this afternoon." For the first time, he looked at Robert with a very knowing smile. "Yes, I am ... very hungry." Robert laughed and so did his Papa. It was the staff's last supper of the week at the chalet. Everyone pitched in and they had a feast from the BBQ and from all the left overs. There was probably a little too much beer and wine consumed by everyone but no one was driving that night so that was okay. They decided to go to the beach and have a fire and roast marshmallows. They had a large fire going and there was talk all around the fire with partners snuggling up to each other. Robert realized what a good decision he had made to have the staff up to the chalet. After an early lunch and many thanks to both Robert and Lucas, everyone had left by 12:30 the next day. The guys and the dads cleaned up and left for home. They both had a lot to do that day as the next day, all of them had even more to do at work. The next morning, after a quick kiss in the elevator, Robert headed in to his office. He hoped to have at least thirty minutes before Mark's arrival. Sure enough, Mark arrived about thirty five minutes later. Mark stuck his head in the door. "Boss, that was a great idea; thanks so much for last week. I did talk to the staff about how they would like the new offices to be." "That is the first thing on the agenda. After that, I want to talk about the growth of the company. Let's have that discussion over lunch today. I would like to be able talk with no one else hearing us. As you might guess, I have some ideas and I want you to listen and be honest." They were seated at the pub and they had ordered. Robert decided to let Mark talk first. "Mark, what did the staff say to you about how they wanted the new office organized?" "I was surprised but with some variations, they all said much the same thing. They want a conference room that is private once you close the door, not like our present on. My session with Liz, my very ex girlfriend, was mentioned by several staff members (Unexpected Robert and Lucas 4)." "Yes that was an interesting meeting." They both laughed at his understatement. "If you are going to appoint heads of sections, they would like them to have private offices. The rest of the staff would have cubicles that are fairly high so that they can't see other people. If possible, they would like a small staff room. That is not a necessity but it would be a place to get away from work, relax and talk to friends on staff. I think that summarizes it fairly." "I can't believe that we are all thinking much the same. There may not be many offices like that in the building or they may be out of our price range. I am going to phone my contact and set up a meeting later this week. I don't want to wait any longer." Robert continued. "The next item for me is the tough one. That is why I wanted to discuss it over lunch today. I don't want to be overheard by the staff. Lucas and I have shared some ideas but we have made no decisions. He told me that it was basically in my hands. Whatever you and I decide, I'll discuss it with him. As you have said before, he has a good perspective on matters like this." "Understood. Could we make this an extended lunch? I think I know what you want to talk about, staff." "As usual, we are on the same page. I realized over the last week that it is perhaps the most import moment for a small staff." "You are right. OK Boss, let me know your thoughts." "I would like a definite section for Forensic+ and ForensicPlus. I want Edward to head that section with Helene as the assistant head but I want you involved to oversee it. I want another programmer who will work with them but who is able to work in a couple of areas in the firm." "I have watched Edward grow in the office. I watched Geoffrey and him at the chalet. He is no shrinking violet. He has taken a leadership role. I am sure that you noticed that it was he who started the clapping when we first saw Phoebe's new, company web site." Marked nodded yes. "I would like a section that deals with web sites and data bases for our companies. I want Phoebe as the head. She has shown her initiative so many times in preparing for interviews with prospective firms. I want to hire someone to work under her who has a very good background in databases first and a good knowledge of web site creation." "Finally, I want a section that will deal with contacting firms about our services and then installing and maintaining their computers. You will head it and I want to hire someone who has the ability and knowledge base for this part of our business. As the firm grows, we may need more hires for this section." "One last thing, I am going to take the title of CEO and you would have the title of assistant CEO. Lucas and I have talked this through and he only wants to be mentioned as a consultant who is the Head of the Forensic Division of The Accountants. That was his suggestion and Mr. Marchese-Milner has given permission for that." "Boss, as usual, you have really put together a very good organization for our firm. Let me put out the hiring notices as I have found quite a few good sites. You might want to contact your people at the university." They had an appointment with the Manager of the building on Friday that week to look at and talk about new office space in the building. Robert and Mark turned up exactly on time, no surprise there. The first office was just appropriate. The second would almost be possible. The manager listened to their evaluation of each office. He took them to an office that was being vacated at the end of August. It turned out to be exactly what they wanted. It had a small room at the front door and then two larger rooms that had separate offices and open spaces for cubicles in both rooms. There was a third, small room which could easily be made into office space and a small staff room. Both Mark and Robert agreed that they could expand their business for a number of years without having to move. They were able to have special pricing since they had been in their office for more than six months and the manager was aware of the connection with the The Accountants, a long standing business in the building. Robert called Lucas to come up and he was impressed. Robert arranged to meet Lucas in The Accountants around 5:45 and he and Mark went back to their office. They had told the manager that they would take the office if the price that he had mentioned was definite. The manager said that he would have to talk to the owners but he was fairly certain that it would be accepted. As Robert and Mark walked out of the elevator, they heard a series of loud shouts from what sounded like their office area. Robert entered the half open door. There was a guy leaning over the desk of the receptionist. "I want to see Mark. I know that he works here. I demand to see him." Robert heard behind him. "Oh fuck, I know the voice. It is Sean who works at Liz's office. Shit. Why today? It has been weeks since Liz and I broke up." Robert knew in an instant what he had to do. He was the boss. He had to take control. Robert turned to Mark. "I want you to go to The Accountants and stay there until I call you up." He could see that Mark was not pleased with that order. "OK, you stay out here and do not come in until I call you. I mean it and I will not accept any other action from you." Robert had never talked to him like this. So Robert got a grudging `yes Boss' from Mark. Robert then stepped in to the office. Sean was leaning over the receptionist's desk trying to intimidate her. Robert knew what he had to do. "Stand back from that desk." He thought to himself, establish his credentials and his position. "This is my office and we do not act like this. Stand back!" He took a deep breath which made him look bigger. Sean stood back and looked at him. His eyes were bloodshot and he was moving oddly. Robert could smell alcohol in the office. Robert realized immediately how charged and difficult this situation could become. Robert looked at Elise, his receptionist. "I want Lucas, here, now!" She dialed the number. As she started to talk to Lucas, Robert looked at Sean. "Sean, in my office now." "Why the fuck would I do that? I just want to deal with that bastard Mark." "You have two choices. I phone the police and have you taken away or you come in to my office and we talk this through. Mark will not be involved in this until I say so." "Who the fuck are you? You look like junior staff." "I am CEO of this firm. I own it and run it ... my way and my way is my office or the police!" He pointed to his office. By this time, he could see heads looking out of the door from the other office area. Robert looked at them and just held up his hand that said stop. He could see that they were prepared to intervene and help him. He shook his head, no. Robert made Sean go ahead of him in to his office. Robert went around his desk. He looked at Sean. "Sit and then we talk." "What if I don't want to sit?" "My office, my company, my way." In a less angry voice. "Sean, you are making a mistake here. My advice is to sit and talk this through." As he sat down reluctantly, Sean started talking. "There isn't a lot to talk about. He just dumped Liz with no explanation or consideration. She is really upset." Robert breathed in and then let it out. "Sean, Mark's work became erratic about a month and half ago. He had asked Liz out many times and she always put him off. He had been with her about twice in that last month. He was so upset that he wasn't sleeping. He told me that he was convinced that she was sleeping with you. We happened to go out for supper on a Friday and you and she were at the pub. You had your arm over her shoulder. After, when we finished our meal and we were leaving, you and Liz were dancing very close with your hand on her ass pulling her in to your body. At the end of the dance, she reached up and kissed you ...." Lucas was at the door to his office. He had a smirk on his face. Lucas with determination, "And it certainly wasn't a little kiss between friends. It was a lover's kiss." Sean turned quickly. "Who the fuck are you?" Lucas pointed at Robert and with a menacing voice, "I am his fucking partner in this firm." Robert wanted to laugh loudly, Lucas had been at the door longer than he had realized. "Ah Mr. Stephenson, such a master of the English language, almost like Sean." Robert spoke, looking directly at Sean, "Yes, we all saw it and it was not just a friendly kiss. I was here the day that Liz returned Mark's electric razor with your shavings in it. If they were not yours, then she was with someone else besides you. My entire staff heard Liz say that you were married and didn't want to leave your wife. Mark simply said that he would never be the second best in a relationship and that he had met someone that night when we saw the kiss. He also told her that she had broken their relationship by her actions with you. Sean, you are in a very bad spot here. My entire staff heard Mark's conversation with Liz. I can tell you that Mark has found someone whom we all admire. You are the one who broke up the relationship when you slept with her." Sean put his head down in his hands. "We only did it a few times. I had to set up elaborate reasons for not being at home. My wife has been depressed since the birth of our second child and she just doesn't want any physical intimacy." "So you used Liz." Robert gave Sean a penetrating look. "Not a very great comment on you." Lucas motioned that he wanted to use Robert's computer. Robert gave him a strange look. Lucas looked at him. "I want to check on something that he said." Sean looked defeated. "I really do like Liz but I can't abandon my wife; I do love her. And then, there are my children." Lucas cleared his throat. "Sean, come here and look at what I have found online. You said something a few minutes ago. I put in a search for child birth and depression. I think that you should read this." Sean sat looking at the screen and reading for almost a minute. "Shit, she needs to see a doctor. I had no idea." Robert almost broke out laughing. It appeared that his guy, his male partner, might have just solved the problem in a hetero marriage. Who would have guessed. This might change the entire situation. Robert looked at Sean. "Sean, I think that you know that neither we nor Mark are the problem here. Liz may be unhappy and telling you a bit of a story to try and get you back. Mark tried his damnedest to connect with Liz. It almost cost him his position in my firm as he was so upset and distracted by the situation and I was becoming annoyed with him. I think that you need to have a real, honest talk with Liz and end any intimate connection with her. I am going to ask Mark to come in and you two are going to settle this and there will be no punch up. Got it." "My thanks to you and Mr. Stephenson for how you have treated me. Yes, I would like to sit down with Mark for a few minutes." Robert was fairly certain that Mark had not stayed in the hallway. He knew where to look. He went in to the other office of the firm. Sure enough there were Phoebe and Mark holding hands and talking quietly." Mark looked up. "Boss ...." "It's OK Mark. I didn't even look in the hallway. I came directly here. I knew where I would find you. Come on, I want the two of you to meet Sean. We've had a good session with him. He would like to talk to you and I think that you should introduce him to Phoebe." "Boss ..." "No, just do it. I shall always look after my staff; Lucas and I'll be at the receptionist's desk. As I said to Sean, my business and I do it my way. Come on. It is time that this stops." Mark put his arm around Phoebe and they walked out behind Robert. Sean was talking to Lucas. As they walked in, Sean turned towards the door. Mark walked through the door still with his arm around Phoebe. "Sean I would like you to meet Phoebe. We left the club after we saw you and Liz kiss and went to another dance club. I asked this young lady to dance with me. We have been together since then." He turned his head to look at Phoebe. "One of the luckiest nights of my life." Their look at each other said it all. Phoebe looked at Sean. "Sean, I am glad that we have met. The Boss says that you and Mark are going to talk to each other and work this out." She turned and looked at Mark. "I'll see you at the Thai restaurant in about 20 minutes." Robert and Lucas withdrew to the receptionist's desk and waited. The guys talked for about 10 minutes and came out and shook hands. Sean looked at Robert and Lucas. Then looking at directly at Robert, "Boss, I guess I can call you that. Thanks for handling this the way you did. Lucas, thanks for making the connection between birth and depression." He turned and looked at Mark. "Mark turns out to be a decent, good guy." Robert couldn't help himself. "You know that there is a real irony here. Lucas may have figured out your wife's problem as a case of post partem depression. The irony is that you were helped by Lucas ... my husband." He smiled at Sean who looked surprised. "Yes, a gay man may have helped solve a hetero man's wife's problem. Let us know how it turns out for her and you." "You guys are incredible. I would never have guessed your relationship." He hesitated. "You know I said that you looked like junior staff. Mark thinks that the two of you walk on water." He turned to Robert. "You do run your business your way. Thanks, I would have made a total fool of myself." "A suggestion. Next time you come in to my office, please don't let me smell alcohol." He raised his eyebrows and smiled. "Best of luck." The next weeks of August were a whirlwind of activity. They signed the lease for the new office. They spent a lot of the time of the next weekend in the office planing to be ready for the move to the new office. As Edward had said. `they had the background now to set up a new office in a hurry'. They had arranged to have the new offices painted in colours they wanted with the new rugs; it was done by the owners of the building. They posted jobs on several sites. Again they had a recommendations from Charles Hunter. Everyone seemed OK with the way that Robert had appointed people as heads of sections. They surprised themselves. They had worked right up to the Sunday morning of the Labour Day weekend. They made it to the chalet on Sunday afternoon for supper. They breathed a sigh of relief as they had made it for part of the Labour Day weekend. They hired all the staff that they needed in the weeks after Labour Day. They were going to move to the new office October 1st, the week before Thanksgiving. In the weeks after Labour Day, there was even more pressure on Robert and Lucas as they were scheduled for the conference in St. Louis which started on the third Friday of September. Thomas and Liam had not been able to make it up for the Labour Day weekend for which the guys were now glad because of all the work they had done on that weekend. However, both Liam and Thomas along with Ron Corbett would be in St. Louis for the conference. The surprise was that Thomas, Liam and Ron would be at the chalet for the Thanksgiving weekend. The guys wondered if they would survive the month of September and early October. Robert tried his hardest to do as much as possible himself as Lucas had his job as Head of the forensic section at The Accountants. Robert had become very adept at delegating tasks to Mark and increasingly to Edward as well. On the Wednesday a week before they left for St. Louis, Robert was in his office where he was revising the opening of his and Lucas' presentation, yet again as Lucas would say, when he heard someone come in to the reception asking the receptionist if he could meet with Robert Malenfant. Again, as with Brett, he recognized the voice and bolted out of his chair. When he stepped out of his office, Charles Hunter was heading towards him. "Charles, I can't tell how good it is to see you." The two ended up in a massive hug. "I have so much to tell you and thank you for." Charles smiled. "I am so glad to see that you still have that enthusiasm. I hear that you are expanding." "Why don't you I show you our offices here and then take you up to our new offices that we move into on October 1st." They walked into the second office. Heads turned to see who was coming in. Well one head was busy talking to one of the new hires. Charles smiled and winked at Robert. Charles walked over and put his hand on Edward's shoulder. Edward, without looking up, "Boss, just give me a minute." Charles with a smile. "What if I don't have a minute to spare?" The head spun around and up. His eyes were wide open. "Professor Hunter, what a surprise." With new found confidence, "You have come a long way to be here in our offices. Surely you have a minute to spare." With that, he stood straight and with a big smile, he shook hands with his professor. "It really is good to see you. Could you let me finish with Steven and then I would so much like to talk? Steven is the young man who you recommended." "Robert is going to show me the new offices. Then I am going to come down and we can talk. I have a lot of time for you." As they went to elevator. "Robert, what have you done to Edward. I have never seen this side of him. He actually joked with me. Amazing." "As I said in my email last month, he has changed. Beside Mark, my second in command, he is my best hire. He is now a section head. The young man, who you recommended and who Edward was talking to, is one of his staff members. Bet you never expected that." Charles just shrugged his shoulders. They entered the new offices. As they looked around, Charles commented. "You really are planning to expand. This is a wonderful space. I like the colours of the walls and the rug is very rich in colour." "Yes I am ordering new furniture for this entry area. I want to create a sense of a tasteful, well run office. I want the staff to enjoy the office and I want clients to feel that they are with a well run business." "I think that you have succeeded. I congratulate myself. Several years ago, Emile and I recognized two young men who would succeed. Lucas is head of the forensic section and you are building a new company. It is lunch time. Is there any possibility that we could go for a quick lunch with Lucas and Edward?" "Give me a second. I'll contact them." "Lucas says that he would never miss lunch with you and Edward is delighted to be asked." They enjoyed the lunch and Charles really enjoyed the new Edward. It was clear from what he said that Edward and Geoffrey were a couple and that Edward was totally loving every minute he was with Geoffrey. Charles could not say enough good things about Robert's new firm and their new offices. He congratulated Lucas on his promotion. There were handshakes and hugs when he left for his appointment at the university. The week went by quickly and as it seemed to Robert, all too quickly they were in St Louis. Robert had changed the beginning of their presentation, yet again, as he knew that they might have a tough audience. They were some very large American firms who might very well come out against them as a Canadian company selling to American ones. He knew that he had to establish that he was presenting a piece of software that was without equal. He had asked and received a large number of evaluations and recommendations from US firms who had purchased Forensic+ and all of them had given him permission to use their evaluations in his presentation. So far, the firms were very pleased with Forensic+ and were excited about the new features in Forensic+ 1.1. It was a great reunion when they met Thomas, Liam and Ron for supper on the first night of the conference. Again the next day, he missed a lot of his father's keynote address as he was going through all that he wanted to do in his presentation in the afternoon of that day. Mark and Phoebe were running the presentation graphics and Edward was going to take over the selling of Forensic+ both after the presentation and at a small booth in the main concourse of the conference. As in Toronto, he and Lucas met in their room where they changed their clothes and kissed goodbye as Lucas went off to another presentation. He would join Robert after his session. The meeting room was large and it did have a raised area where Robert and Lucas could sit. Robert sent Edward to look for two stools for them to use. Robert didn't like the ideas of using chairs. He wanted to be up higher and he wanted to able step off the stool and roam the stage looking at his audience. Minutes later, a triumphant Edward came in with the stools. He had never seen his boss perform like this; he wanted everything perfect for Lucas and Robert. He left again and came back with a small table and bottles of water and two glasses. Robert called Edward over. "Thanks for thinking of the water. We'll need it for the presentation. Right now I need a coffee with cream to get me going." "Not a problem Boss. I'll be right back." Robert spent a few more minutes looking at his notes. He looked up. "Ah, Edward, I really need that coffee. Thanks." The room was starting to fill up. As he took a large mouthful of his coffee, he saw Lucas enter and stride towards him. God, he looked good. He looked vibrant and filled with energy. Lucas came up to him. Robert smiled. "You looked so good coming down the steps to the platform. I would like to give you a great big, wet kiss but ...." "As we have said many times, kisses can be put in the bank for later. Now, stop worrying, you are going to do it as well or better than in Toronto." Sitting on his stool, Robert looked at his watch. There were five minutes left before the session was to start. He desperately wanted to touch and hug his guy but instead, he gave him a thumbs up and turned to look at the audience. He could see his parents, Lucas' father, Michael Burtchell and then Thomas and Liam. Beside them was a beaming Ron Corbett who looked at him and gave him two fists with thumbs up while he mouthed `go get them'. He looked at his watch; it was time to perform. Robert scanned the audience. It was full. This was his toughest group. He breathed in deeply and realized that he had nothing to lose. There was nothing more that he could do than to give a great presentation. So he stood up and walked with purpose to the front of the stage. He scanned the audience. In a clear, firm voice, "My name is Robert Malenfant. I am one of the people who developed this program, Forensic+, which I know is changing the way that you will do forensic accounting." Lucas stood up and moved beside Robert. "I am Lucas Stephenson. I am the other person responsible for this program but I have to add that this program was Robert's dream which he started to think about in our first year at university. He wanted to change the way we did forensic work by using computer technology. Without his drive and determination, this program would never have happened." Robert was almost struck dumb. This was not in the script. Frowning, he turned and looked at Lucas. Lucas smiled. He winked at Robert and then turned and scanned the audience. With a smile, "My partner is lost for words; my comments were not in his notes." He scanned the audience again. Then in a low, confidential voice. "He doesn't appreciate it when I do things like this." There were chuckles around the room. Robert realized that Lucas had done a great job of getting the audience on their side. Robert had cut out the bickering part of his introduction in Toronto and what Lucas said was the perfect way to have the audience accept them. He knew what he had to do. "Mr. Stephenson, without you, this program would not exist. You have provided so much information on how to do a forensic audit and break a case into its bits. I would like you to outline your background and your contributions." He was back on track. Robert almost didn't care how the presentation went. Lucas had shown him yet again how to treat a partner. Robert sat down on his stool and Lucas stepped forward. "I knew that I wanted to be a CPA like my father. However, during my first year at university, I became fascinated by forensic accounting." Looking at Robert, "Robert mentioned his idea of computers helping forensic accounting several times in that first year at university. Neither he nor I did get a lot done on his dream that first year. We won a spot on he university hockey team and became co-captains of our university team. With that and our studies, we were just too busy. However, I began to plan my courses around forensic accounting in my second year at university. Luckily I worked at The Accountants as my summer job and I was put in the forensic section. I worked there every summer and when I graduated, I immediately started working with Michael Burtchell to complete my CPA. Michael and I worked on a number of forensic cases that year. After I received my CPA, I went back to my home, The Accountants. I am now Head of the Forensic section of The Accountant. I can tell you that Forensic+ has changed our methods and work dramatically ... for the better." Lucas stepped back and Robert took over. "I am not even certain when I came up with this idea. I was glad that we didn't get much done that first year. I realized very quickly that I had to fall back on Lucas' abilities in forensic accounting. As a result, I concentrated on computer languages, compilers and advanced programming. We were a team. It was in our third year that we had a program that we were able to test out at the Accountants during our summer jobs as we both worked at the Accountants. The program worked. However, we worked even harder to refine the program and add to it until we both graduated. It was then that I started my computer firm. We presented Forensic+ in Toronto last May for the first time. I have to say that we have had many positive reviews and comments. We have sent out Forensic+ 1.1 several weeks ago to all our registered users. We have already had many enthusiastic comments about 1.1. I have had many positive evaluations that we shall mention during our presentation. Lucas and I want to show you how Forensic+ works and why it will change how you will do forensic cases differently and more productively." On schedule, the first graphic appeared on the screen. Robert was certain that he had the attention of the audience. Comments mailto:preecherdave@gmail.com If you liked this story, you might want to read the others that I have published on Nifty.
