Chapter 44 . . . The alarm sounded at 6am and the boys were out of bed and on their way to do chores. I quickly fixed the table for breakfast and put clean towels out for showers. With the coffee pot on I jumped in and took a quick shower. If we could leave by 7am we should be in midtown NY City by 11 or noon at the latest. The boys were finished chores and had showers over and at the table having breakfast and continuous chatter. It would great if every morning was like this. Breakfast finished and everything cleaned. Horses were out and I would give Neil a call sometime while we were on the road. We hit the road just after 7 and the boys never stopped talking. We headed west for just a short distance into New York and then jumped on the Taconic State Parkway and this gave us a mostly straight shot right into midtown Manhattan. We arrived at the Hotel Edison at 11:30 with 4 very excited boys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8dyG5TAsH0 We checked in and took our bags to our room the boys flipped out, the room was so beautiful. One king size bed and one queen size bed, table lounge chairs and sofa. The HD TV was 60inch. The manager had stocked the refrigerator with OJ and sprite he remembered what Garret liked. On the bed was tour related suggestions for teens and he gave us discount coupons for 25 places and restaurants. The first thing the boys wanted was a Double Decker bus tour. We grabbed some water and snacks and headed right out for a bus tour. Coming for a small town the boy's excitement never stopped. This place is CrAzY . . . it is wall to wall people and the action never stops. It was a little scary and the boys were close to my side and Liam never let go of my hand. We found our stop for the Double-decker bus. We sat up top, of course, and could not believe what we were seeing. We were so lucky we had the entire back seat which are 5 across. I sat in the middle and Liam and Kori had the left and right end seats as they are the shortest. With that seating I had Garret and Peter to my immediate left and right and we all enjoyed the trip beginning to end. I did notice that both Garret and Peter teased me a few times by putting their hand a little high on my leg. They that sly grin. The boys never stopped talking. They all had cameras and were taking photos and video the entire time. They are hungry so it's time to Eat. A trip to NY City has to include Pizza so we had so many recommendations but this one sounded the best. Joe's Pizza real Italian family not much to look at but the pizza was excellent. The boys had two slices each and were full because these slices are huge. One thing I have started to notice is how the boys hang on each other. Our next stop was to end our first day and it was the Empire state building. For kids that come from a small town where the tallest building is the bank and it only is two floors. As we walked and talked it was interesting to hear what Garret was saying. When we rescued Garret here in midtown he really had not seen anything. He ran down the street where we are staying but was running in fear. I realized that Garret was really seeing this all for the first time just like Kori, Liam and Peter. We were on our way to the Empire State Building. When you're seeing it from a distance it just blends in with the other buildings. When you get to the building and are looking at it right on the sidewalk Wowww. The boys took turns holding each other as they leaned backwards to see the top. If you try to look up at it you feel like you're going to fall over. It is 102 stories and was built in 1931 . . . so the boys were figuring out how many years old it is . . . = 87 years old and we are going to the top. Liam asked . . . "Jake it's really old is it safe to go in?" I told Liam it is and we were going to have the best ride in a fast elevator. The building is 1,250 feet tall and that is where we are going. It takes a minute to get almost to the 86th floor, but they get you because you have to buy a ticket to get out on the observation deck on the 102 floor. $$ Oh it is worth it for these boys to see from here. The view was awesome and the boys never stopped talking. Kori is having the best birthday he could have imagined. It is so hard to explain how much I love Kori, Liam and Garret, Peter too. We saved this site so we could watch it home and re-live our experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XLjLx5fvsM It was just 6pm we were getting tired and needed a rest it was about half hour walk back to the hotel. We could do it faster but there is just so much to look at and the cameras never stopped. I had arrange to have a birthday car on the king size bed every day when we returned. We walked in the room and there on the bed was one of those huge birthday cards about the size of a poster. Kori was so excited we all got hugs and someone got a kiss too. We spent some time washing the grime off as walking around New York City you get covered in auto exhaust, dust, dirt and otherwise just feel grubby. We changed to clean shirts and decided on an inexpensive Chinese dinner. Ha! Nothing in midtown is inexpensive but we did manage to make out good by going to Panda Express on 46th and 7th avenue an easy walk for us. We all like Chinese food so this was great. The best part is they were each feeding each other and of course they were missing the mouths on purpose. We took in the sights of the city after dinner with Kori and Peter acting silly and Liam never letting go of my hand. Garret stuck to my side like glue but was having a real good time. We were all feeling the activities of the day and opted to a movie in our room and not at a theater. The boys all took showers first and it was interesting. Kori, Garret and Peter all took their shower at the same time leaving Liam and I to take ours next. The boys were good and were not that long. When they came out of the bathroom they were all in robes. These were ¾ length summer weight robes and they were showing off and then ended up on the king size bed. Every so often the robe would open and you could see everything. Liam made a point of pointing. We could have all easily slept on that bed. Kori picked Spirited Away for the movie and we all settled back and began watching this amazing movie. For me it is not just the story but the soundtrack that grabs me. Soon Liam was fast asleep I'm not sure what time it was but I woke up to find Garret snuggled in bed with me and Liam. Liam was between Garret and me and Garret had his arms around Liam. The night passed quickly and the morning light filtered by the tinting on the windows told us it was time to get ready for an exciting day here in NY City. Today it was the Statue of Liberty and the September 11th memorial and tonight it was The Philadelphia Orchestra performing Grieg's "In the Hall of the Mountain King" from Peer Gynt Suite at the Stern Auditorium on the Perelman Stage. Tomorrow we will finish with Central park and afternoon performance of the Lion King. It was quick showers and breakfast and on to the Statue of Liberty. The boys had a good breakfast and we took a shuttle to the boat for our trip to Ellis Island and to see her majesty the Statue. While we were on the boat we started to learn facts about the statue. Kori and Liam were like human recorders and historians. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France and has welcomed immigrants to the US since it was opened in 1886. The statue's full name is Liberty Enlightening the World. She holds a torch and tablet which is inscribed with the date of American Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776). From the ground to the top of the torch the statue measures 93 meters. Lady Liberty wears a size 879 shoe and she has a 35-foot waistline. Visitors have to climb 354 stairs to reach the statue's crown where there are 25 windows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42yO2FUWL6A All four boys learned different things what they couldn't get over is how big it is. It is one thing to see photos or videos but to stand at the base and look up makes one feel so small. It was time to go and the boys were ready for another boat ride. We were now excited to see the September 11th memorial. We had no idea what we would see. Yes the boys had studied it in school but again to stand before and within it creates a feeling of sadness that is not describable. Garret, Kori and Peter were moved and at one point I saw Garret with tears. The boys began learning the facts about the memorial. They read each one and it was as if they were committing each to memory. Encompassing 110,000 square feet of space, the 9/11 Memorial Museum--which honors the victims of terrorist attacks on both September 11, 2001 and February 26,1993. The Memorial and Museum occupy about eight acres of the original World Trade Center site. Tissues and exit doors are strategically placed for visitors who may become overwrought with emotion. "Ultimately, this Museum will express what those who attacked us did not understand--that the ties that bind us strengthen in the most extraordinary ways when we are faced with the most unimaginable circumstances. There was so much that I bought each of the boys a book and a video telling about the memorial. It is something I think they will have for many, many years. I hope that what they have seen today will allow then to begin to know what freedom means. I have in my classes taught my kids to remember that "Freedom is not Free" It is truly the ultimate sacrifice that allows us to continue to be free. A class requirement is that each student learns this from Abraham Lincoln. Now I know the boys will be out of their minds when we go to Carnegie Hall. This place is amazing and I can remember a number of concerts we attended while at Yale University. Just to be in Carnegie is amazing. The performance had the boys wanting to learn to play instruments. They could not get over the volume the orchestra produced. Peter was watching the strings and the speed of the bows at the end of the Mountain King. I wasn't sure I had made a good choice taking them to a symphony concert but they all loved it. I had to think to myself if they would ask to take music lessons. It was back to the hotel and the routine never changes, showers TV and bed. At least the boys were behaving themselves in bed and I was thankful for that. Well I think they were behaving every once in awhile I noticed an erection or two. We had a full day and I have no idea how many miles we walked. I know my legs were tired and I think it was because it was all on pavement. The boys looked tired as well and they were quieter tonight. As we were getting into bed Kori said . . . "Jake this bed is as big as ours at home why can't we all sleep here tonight it's our last night then we go to Yale." He's right. Liam and I joined Kori, Garret and Peter. The amazing thing was . . . we went right to sleep. Morning came with the light gently waking each of us and telling us the day had begun. We had our morning routine and the boys were ready for central park. We packed everything and went down to the lobby and personally thanked the staff for their help and effort to make Garret feel comfortable. We invited the manager that helped Garret that torturous night to visit us if it were possible. It was off to the park for some real exercise. We had a ball and Frisbee and needed to run and play as well as see the beautiful park. Central Park is the largest and most important public park in Manhattan. It occupies an area of 840 acres and extends between 59th and 110th streets (about 2.5 miles [4 km]) and between Fifth and Eighth avenues (about 0.5 miles [0.8 km]). It was completed and opened in 1876, and it is still one of the greatest achievements in artificial landscaping. The park's terrain and vegetation are highly varied and range from flat grassy swards, gentle slopes, and shady glens to steep, rocky ravines. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is in the park, facing Fifth Avenue. There are also a zoo, an ice-skating rink, three small lakes, an open-air theatre, a band shell, many athletic playing fields and children's playgrounds, several fountains, and hundreds of small monuments and plaques scattered through the area. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbDmTmidcPs We had a great time in central park and were ready for lunch and the Lion King. We hit the Hot Dog vendors pretty hard and enjoyed what I would call gourmet lunch; and we all know I am a connoisseur of good food; and a person with a discerning palate. I want to know how they make the sauce that they put on the dogs. It was time to change shirts and head for the Lion King. The boys were excited as they have been with everything we have done on this trip. I will say this I would be happy to take all 4 boys anywhere I am so proud of them. Well the story of the Lion King is a good one and it has some references to how young boys should act. The Lion King is the story of a young lion prince living in the flourishing African Pride Lands and born into the royal family. Eventually he is companioned by two hilarious and unlikely friends. When weight of responsibility and a desperate plea from the now ravaged Pride Lands come to find the adult prince, Simba must take on a formidable enemy, and fulfill his destiny to be king. The boys were cheering at the end and we all had the best time. I know Kori has had a great birthday.
