A Neglected Boy "The Twins" C jacoblion@tutanota.com This Chapter will be told in 2 Parts Part 1 told by Kori ... ... Part 2 will be told by Ethan Part ~ 1 At the end of our last chapter we were back at the campsite and a family had moved into the campsite next to ours. They had tents and Justin and Kyle had made friends with the two younger boys, Caleb and Eli, who were the same age as Justin and Kyle. Jake and I find it interesting how fast 10-year-olds can make friends. Justin and Kyle have been invited to spend the night in the tent with Caleb and Eli. ... ... Ahhhh ... but, before "The Twins" tried to escape with their pillows and sleeping bags Ethan, Jake, Keith, and I cautioned the little `nudists' to keep some clothes on and to be sure to wear their boxers when they crawled into their sleeping bags. "Dad, we're not stupid ya know"! I don't know why but Kyle and Justin did show us their choice of boxers. Kyle had his favorites ... the ones with little fish all over them, he says they're not fish there `sperms' cause Ethan said they were. ... ... That got Jake to give Ethan `the look'. ... Ethan had a guilty grin. `Busted' Justin's choice of boxers was questionable ... he was wearing the boxers with little `kisses' all over them. Maybe it wasn't so much the kisses on the boxers as it was the grin on his face. That little `grin' earned him another caution to be good! ... ... Maybe it did some good ... maybe not. As Kori and I let our adorable `brats' out the bus door the other two boys, Colter and his friend Jace, were at the door asking if Ethan and Keith wanted to play horseshoes. ... One look at 16-year-old cuteness and the smile on Ethan and Keith face said they didn't need to be asked twice. Now let's see ... ... Justin and Kyle off with Caleb and Eli ... Ethan and Keith off with 16-year-old cuteness Colter and Jace leaves Jake and I alone with just 2 sleeping dogs and we all know it's better to `let sleeping dogs lie' and so we did. Now with a little time to ourselves ... I don't have to explain. I made Jake and I a tall ice tea with fresh lemon and we rethought our initial idea of `time to ourselves'. It proved to be good thinking because we hadn't even taken a sip of the ice tea when.......... .........."Dad, Dad ... Eli and Caleb wanna see our bus, Ok?" . . . . Well, the Ok? was followed by all four 10-year-olds marching right in. How cute! ... Caleb and Eli smiled, said thanks, and just followed the rug-rats right on back through the bus as if on a tour at some RV show. ... ummmm, what about wiping feet or removing shoes? That woke Penny and Silence and being the social type of dogs they are it became sniff and playtime ... ... "Hey" is all Jake needed to say . . . . "Sorry `Dad' we'll take Penny n Silence for a walk while Eli and Caleb get their pillows and sleeping bags ... they're gonna spend the night with us ... Ok"? ..........My mind was thinking `what?' ... ... Jake was looking at me and now we were in a spot because Justin, with Kyles head agreeing, had just informed us that we were having company. There was no way out of this because Jake and I have told our boys they can always have friends over. Awkward moment! ... ... Jake just smiled and said . . . . "Kori, I'll go talk to their father." . . . . I know he will explain, and he did, ... and we still have 2 extra boys for the night. ... ... Thanks Jake, good job with the explanation. We've not even slept in the bus and here we are having guests for the night ... maybe Jake and I should go sleep in the tent it was always fun when I was a kid. I don't know what Jake is thinking at the moment but, I remember the nights at the D.A.R. campground with Peter. I think Jake will never forget when Liam had the appendicitis attack there. "Dad, Dad ... can you take these, please?" . . . . that snapped me out of my daydream with Kyle throwing in 2 sleeping bags and Caleb and Eli's pillows. I didn't have time to say `NO' and tell them to bring the stuff in themselves because they were already gone! The disappearing act again. Is this a look into the future of our `Exploring and Adventures'? ... ... Time for a `family meeting'. Jake and I took the pillows and sleeping bags back to the bunkhouse and tossed them on 2 of the extra bunks. I know Kyle and Justin will rearrange anything Jake and I do now. Things will get even more interesting when Ethan and Keith return and they better not even think about having Colter and Jace join the fun. As Jake and I walked forward to the living room area we heard the older voices of 4 teens approaching. Much more thoughtful than the younger `brats' they actually removed their shoes and Keith, and Ethan introduced Colter and Jace. ... OMG ... I don't need to describe these Greek Olympians. Wow ... is what we heard from Jace and Colter. It is a little amazing when you walk inside and all 4 of the slide-outs have been slid to the open position. The living room and bunkhouse have slide-outs on both sides making the area very large. Jake was thinking when he quickly said that Kyle and Justin were having guests for the night. I think he was thinking that would stop Keith and Ethan from asking if Colter and Jace could stay the night. ... Surprise! ... Surprise ... it didn't! ... Ethan was on a role with his explanation that "we" are 6 and the "bus" sleeps 10 so there is room for 2 more. ... ... Ok, so why did Jake and I make sure to be very specific that what we rented had to accommodate sleeping for 10? ... ... Ethan, and his partner in crime, Keith were looking at Jake and I with those pleading teen eyes .... Ok, ok, ok fine. Burgers and dogs, hot dogs that is, for dinner with all the fixings and then I suggested a board game and that was quickly shot down as both the rug-rats and the teens had other ideas that involved computer games. Now we all know that Jake and I are not very good at those games. I think it was Ethan that said it's best that Jake and I stick to `dominoes'. Never play `dominoes' with Justin or Kyle because they keep score. Oh, at school the rug-rats are on the junior math team and are at the top. Their best subject is math. In playing `dominoes' their math sucks! Their math sucks even using a calculator, for some reason they always have the better score. Ok, I'm exaggerating, it's really that they can keep track of the pieces. Jake and I are good sports and don't mind losing most of the time, however, it is difficult to look at the smile on Kyle and Justin's face when they beat us 5 times in a row. Rug-rats, brats, monsters, tyrants are only a few of the names we can think of at the moment. Who could be at fault for Justin and Kyle being spoiled? ... ... must be Keith and Ethan, yes, it is..... The evening was something of a surprise as well. Yes, the bus is big but, not that big and the bunkhouse doesn't offer any real privacy. All Jake and I know is that our guests from the next campsite had a great time playing `whatever' computer games with Keith, Ethan, and the rug-rats. It was getting late, nearly midnight, time to shut things down and head to bed for everyone. Jake and I are very happy to have our own bedroom. ~ ~ `further explanation' ... Jake and I have our own bedroom at the very end of the bus and tonight we also had company ... Penny and Silence. A quiet knocking at the bedroom door was followed by a much louder knocking at our bedroom door and the announcement that breakfast was ready. Jake was in some kind of coma. I shook him then gave him a good pinch, that got his eyes open. ... It also got me a dirty look, and a smile. I told Ethan we'd be right out. Jake was the smart one and let the Whippets out so we had 2 or 3 minutes to splash some cold water on our faces and comb hair before we headed for the living room area for breakfast. ... ... Ahhhh, surprise again. Breakfast was at the campsite next to us with John and his family. Now this is camping. It was breakfast cooked over a "real campfire". What would you pay for a breakfast of eggs, sausage, ham, bacon, sliced tomato, stuffed mushroom, and biscuits? ... ... Ok, John and his wife serving this kind of breakfast made the whole trip worth it. Keith, and Ethan were taking notes on how to make camp breakfasts like this. Jake and I got a lesson about `the must have cast iron pans' then John's wife provided us with a copy of just how to cook everything in order to have it all finished at the same time ... everything `hot' nothing `cold'. Good thing Keith and Ethan were taking notes. The coffee ... well, Jake went on and on about how great the coffee was and it wasn't even Amaretto coffee. I drank the coffee. Ethan and Keith were looking at me when I took my first sip of coffee. It was difficult to drink that stuff! ... It was even more difficult to drink it and smile and say how good it was. It was black! ... It had no cream! ... not even any milk! ... no sugar! ... It was black, dark black and the hair on my chest curled then stood straight up! With breakfast over Jake and I helped John and his wife clean everything up while watching the boys playing horseshoes. It was nice to just spend time with John and his wife and not be talking about Yale, what we did, or asked if we were a couple. ... We were just another family camping. Then came that disappointing announcement from John . . . . "Hey, Caleb, Colter, Jace, Eli ... time to get the tents packed and head for home." . . . . It was Kyle and Justin that showed the disappointment first with both of them asking if they couldn't please stay another day ... they were so cute. Jake to the rescue. Jake suggested to Justin and Kyle they get a pen and paper and get email addresses. ... Pen and paper? ... right on Jake ... good idea wrong century. Keith and Ethan already had all 4 tablets and soon links were created and now they can `face' whatever or Skype or Zoom or who knows what media they will use. ... Then I thought about what `photos'. Our boys helped Caleb, Eli, Colter, and Jace pack down and fold tents and how they ever got those things in the carry bags is beyond Jake and I. We said our goodbyes and waved as they pulled out. Seemed quiet almost immediately. Ethan had a good idea . . . . "Hey, time to get the dogs for a run." ... Ethan was right they needed a run and so did we. Jake and I watched as the 16 legs trotted off in front of us, soon we were far behind at more of a leisurely walk. It gave us time to talk about our family meeting our proposal to the boys. "Why are you `Dads' so lazy? ... was what Justin said and then the irritating remark form Kyle was ... "yep, n this `Dad' needs more situps" pointing to Jake ... The chase was on and if Jake gets hold of Kyle, he just might get a butt warming or at the very least a good `wedgie'. It was laughs and more laughs all the way back to the bus. It almost seems at times that the Whippets know what we're talking about and join in on the fun. Back in the bus and the first words spoken ... "we're hungry" .... What else is new? ... ... Time for lunch. A nice fruit salad and a family meeting. Jake was prepared for this meeting of the minds and we both had thoughts that Kyle and Justin would be excited and in favor of the plan. Now thinking about the teens, we thought they would have reservations. Perhaps they would have other ideas seeing they already mentioned a `gap' year. I am sure that Ethan and Keith probably already looked into the many `gap year' programs offered. Armed with his laptop and a map Jake began . . . . "Ok `men' here are some thoughts and Kori and I would like to hear what you think." . . . . Well, Justin and Kyle were all ears and smiles when Jake used the term "Ok men" and Keith and Ethan were interested in Jakes production/sales pitch. Jake continued . . . . "Kori and I have done some research and asked some questions and have a plan that may interest you. First we looked at your academic standing ... bravo ... you are so on top of your game" . . . . Oh yes, that brought smiles from all 4 boys and thumbs up from the rug-rats. I have to say that Jake and I are very proud of `our' boys. Well, Jake went on . . . . "So, Kori and I thought you guys might like to `hit the road' at the end of this semester, after Christmas when Lorenzo and Marco return to Italy from their visit with us. ... ... With Justin and Kyle, we can home school while on the road and when back in New Haven they can jump right back to their classes at University School." ... Big smiles from the `brats'. Ethan and Keith were waiting for the `other shoe to drop' so to speak, and about what plans Jake was to announce regarding them ... and here it goes as Jake continued with Part 2 of the `plan'. He began the `teens' sales pitch'. .......... "Keith, Ethan you guys are so far ahead because of the `Advanced Placement' courses that you have all the "core courses" completed for your freshman year at any college or university." There were very proud smiles on our teen faces...................... Jake is on a role and here comes the clincher as he continues . . . . "So, Ethan and Keith here's the best part for you guys. That is that you both can enroll in `online distance courses for credit' while we are exploring, and on some adventure, going from place to another" Jake stopped just for a moment looking at the teen faces and then he went right for the killer `punch line' and he knew the teens couldn't resist.......... "Now hold on I can see the questions ... just one more thing and that is we will stop and look at a number of Universities that you may want to finish your degree at"............ "Perhaps the University of Alberta where they have one of the finest Paleontology schools and a great archaeology department too. You know you can take one of the courses for free right now if you would like. It's Dino 101 and it's the world's first paleobiology Massive Open Online Course ... here is all the information" ... https://www.ualberta.ca/admissions-programs/online-courses/dino101/index.html Jake turned his laptop around so they could see and then pushed the big North American map almost off the table and into their laps. Keith and Ethan were glued to the screen till Kyle and Justin saw the T-Rex (Tyrannosaurus Rex). It was pushing and shoving, and now all 4 boys were glued to that screen. ... ... We hope their excitement will continue. For Jake and I it was the end of any further discussion for that afternoon and evening. Keith and Ethan had already filled in their information and had begun the course with Justin and Kyle in their laps. The course had consumed them. What Jake and I heard were things like "no way, OMG it's huge, I never knew that, look at the size of its head"............ Morning ... yes, it was morning and not a sound to be heard from outside our bedroom door. Either the boys are all up, I mean awake, and outside or they're still in Jurassic Park dreamland. Jake and I had time for a quick shower. Ahhhh, as we were pulling on shorts and shirts that amazing aroma of `his' coffee and bacon began filling the bus. We slid back the pocket door and as we walked toward the kitchen, we passed Kyle and Justin all cuddled up to Silence and Penny. It was the one eye open trick, a deep breath, a sigh, and back to sleep for the Whippets. Keith and Ethan were just removing the bacon to a large paper plate. They both looked so handsome more like young men not teenagers. Ethan handed me a nice hot cup of English tea as Keith poured Jake a cup of his Amoretto coffee then handed it to him. We had our first sip of tea and coffee when Ethan said ..."Kori, Keith and I need to talk to you and Jake". Part 2 ... Told by Ethan We were up till after 2 this morning. Kyle and Justin went to bed with the Whippets just after 1 ... then Keith and I went for a little walk. We talked about `your plan' and what we thought was going to be `our plan' after graduation. ... The plans are a little different. Keith and I had looked at several `gap programs' and we found several that we liked especially the Swiss program and the ones offered by the Gap Year Association. ... Jake, I know you want to say something but, let me and Keith finish, please. ..."Ok Ethan, Kori and I won't interrupt" ... thanks Jake. Keith and I have thought this through, we think you'll understand. I was saying that our plans were different and I know you and Kori have done so much research and everything you have done has been for us. Keith and I know it's because you want the best for us and "The Twins" and that is what Keith and I talked about. If Keith and I leave after graduation we both know how much "The Twins" will be hurt.......... To be honest at first, I wasn't wanting to agree with your plan ... I really wanted to go out, to be a part of a `gap program' to explore things on my own. ... ... I think it's best to let Keith explain from his point of view because what Keith was saying to me at 1:30 this morning began to make more sense than my thoughts on the subject. "Thanks Ethan, ... `Dads' ... ha, I made you guys smile with that one ... so, you both know how stubborn Ethan can be and how I'm never like that ... good I've really got your attention now. Kori the gap program looked really great until Jake and you pointed out that we could stop at different Universities and see for ourselves what each had to offer." Keith continued ... "I think it wasn't until Ethan and I were talking about the Dino 101 program you got us into that we realized that no `gap program' would do the same. Then we looked at the map you gave us. At first, we didn't see all the arrows to locations with great universities you wanted us to see ... yeah, to see like in person. That means we get to talk to students there and hear what they have to say about their university and courses." Jake and Kori are beginning to smile and Keith seems to be making their case for them. I tend to be a little more uptight when trying to explain and it comes across as being agitated, ... better to let Keith because he'll just slide our concerns in and Jake and Kori will just agree with him ... I hope. So, Keith continued ... ... " So, that's when Ethan and I came back in and began looking at every spot on the map. Looks good Jake, Ethan and I think you did the map and Kori did the research about where to stop because he knows what Ethan and I have been talking about for our `majors'. We even think you guys listen to what we say more than what Ethan and I think. I know it's hard to admit you really listen to us" Now Jake and Kori are all ears and smiles and here comes the big thing that Keith and I kinda don't like ... ... and Keith continues............ ............ "Ethan and I do have one thing ... kinda like a little problem it's that we don't have any privacy on the bus. ... You know what I mean but, we might have the solution. Justin, Kyle, Ethan and I helped pack up the tents with John's boys. We asked Colter and Jace how they liked their Kodiak tent and they said it was perfect n plenty of privacy for when they have a little fun. ... all boys do it ... even you guys do it ... right?" Hmmm, I guess looking at your smiles you know what Keith and I are talking about and no we didn't ask Jace n Colter. I looked at Jake and Kori with their big smiles and turned my tablet around so they could see the tent Keith and I were thinking about. I think Jake and Kori were about to say yes when 2 Whippets and 2 `brats' charged through the living room. Kyle spotted the picture of the tent and so did Justin ... they skidded to a screeching stop. They had heard Keith and I talking about one . . . . "We want one too" and that was in their typical unison voices." Jake had the biggest smile and was winking at Kori so I think maybe Keith and I will get a private room of our own. Kori kicked the `rug-brats' and their 4-legged sidekicks out the door. I don't think Keith and I expected what came next from Kori............ ............ "You know Ethan I think you and Keith have a great Idea. How about this ... ... Let's have a quick breakfast and head for Bass Pro Shops in Bridgeport Connecticut. I remember camping in tents with Liam and Peter at the D.A.R. forest. We had so much fun just ask Jake. On the way back to the farm we can get Antonio and Kris, they'll love the bus, then you guys can set up the tents and try them out at the farm." I looked at Keith smiling ear to ear and that just seemed to easy then Jake added . . . . "You guys really do have a good idea. I suppose Justin and Kyle will want one too and that will be good for them as well. The bunkroom is fine for when we're on the road going from one stop to the next because we may be traveling for 3 days. Then when we reach our next adventure spot we might be there for a week or two. Having the tents will make the adventure better and we all get some privacy." Ahhhh, when Keith and I were thinking about `privacy' it looks like our `Dads' were thinking the same. Big bus, ... yep, ... lots of privacy? ... `nope'! Fortunately, Keith and I had the solution ... Kodiak Tents. `Rug-rats' and Whippets back aboard and Keith just had to let Justin and Kyle in on the next part of our long-weekend adventure. Excitement, tents, camping, real-camping in tents ... they couldn't even sit down for 2 minutes they just kept asking Keith or I for more pictures of tents and Outdoor World. When Kyle and Justin get excited so do Silence and Penny. The Whippets raced from the living room area down the hall jumped on Jake and Kori's bed and raced back. Quick breakfast of cereal and juice and while Kori and Jake started the bus and unhooked the power Keith, Justin, Kyle and I took the dogs for a run and then hit the road a day early but on to more excitement in Bridgeport at Bass Pro Shops. We were on the road and the trip from Long Pond State Forest to Bridgeport, Connecticut was just over 200 miles of good road and we were at Bass Pro in just under 4 hours. ... Time for lunch but, lunch can wait. Jake had to grab Justin before he escaped out the bus door. We walked inside and found the camping area. Everyone seemed to have a one-track mind and right to the tents. Keith and I had thought the 10x14 would be best for us, however, we ended up with 2 Kodiak 10x10 Deluxe tents. The tents were perfect size for our inflatable mattresses we have at the farm ... so, so perfect. We were in and out in less than an hour. We thought we would go for lunch at a burger place. ... ... nope, Jake said we could eat lunch on the bus to save time and head right over and get Antonio and Kris that way we could be back at the farm in Ashfield by late afternoon. Keith gave me a look like he knew Jake and Kori must have other plans. Hmmm, I think Keith was right. With the new tents and setting things up I bet the `Dads' were counting on us spending the night in the tents. Then they would have the house and that big shower to themselves. ... ... Kori and Jake can be a little sly sometimes ... and I think this is one of those times. It was only a 25-minute ride from Bridgeport to New Haven and when we pulled in to the Judge's place Kris and Antonio went berserk when they saw the bus. We had kept it a secret till we drove in to get them but, we had told them to have sleeping bags and pillows ready for some camping. Like always we needed to pry the rug-brats off Kris and Antonio. I spotted the Judge, Henry, walking toward us with his usual big smile but this time he was shaking his head in disbelief as well. Everyone got the `full bus' tour https://www.busforsale.com/bus-detail/?bus=1391 then we hit the road for our short 2-hour ride up interstate 91 to the farm in Ashfield. Jake was driving and Kori was sitting in the lounge area reading some journal on archaeology discoveries. Keith and I along with Justin, Kyle, Antonio, Kris, and the dogs had all decided to ride in the bunkroom. It didn't seem like 2 hours when we pulled down the drive to that old farmhouse we love so much. Jake, like Kori, just pulled in and then backed up parking the bus at the west end of the barn. It was perfect, just open the bus luggage/storage compartments and 20 feet to a nice grassy area to set up the tents. Justin and Kyle called Lars and Lukas and next thing we knew they were charging up through the lower and upper pasture on their quad bikes. They rolled up to the back of the bus. Oh, this is going to be tons of fun. Jake and Kori brought out drinks and snacks while we opened the boxes and began setting up the tents. ... ... Hmmm, this isn't going so well the poles keep falling down. The brain of the group `Mr. Antonio' had a great suggestion . . . . "Let's look at the instructions, Ethan." ... Ahhhh, no wonder it's not working ... you have to put all the tent stakes in first then put in the ridge pole and the hook in the end poles ... yeah, that makes more sense. In just 20 minutes we had both tents up with everyone helping. Oh, these Kodiak tents are nice. Lots of windows and now it says to spray them with a hose to make them waterproof. ... ... Hmmm, this means getting the hose out, ... water, hose, and 8 boys = 8 very soaked boys but, the tents are canvas and have to be what they call `seasoned' by spraying with water first. Jake and Kori thought it was best to either take showers or use the jacuzzi for a bit to warm up. We did as Jake and Kori suggested and piled in the jacuzzi ...things did warm up ... yes, `things' did definitely warm up. There were lots of laughs and Kris thought we might get the ruler and see if there have been any changes. ... Not now Kris! Kori started the grill, Neil and Peter arrived, and we all enjoyed juicy, thick burgers with cheese and all the fixings. It was the perfect dinner and now we were all looking forward to our first night in our new tents. To make it all more `fun' we have company ... Justin and Kyle have Lars and Lukas staying with them and Keith and I have Antonio and Kris joining us. Keith was thinking and did run back the house before we said goodnight to Jake and Kori. ... ... Oh yes, Keith was really thinking ... when he returned, he had several items that would make the night extra fun and enjoyable. He had this dirty little smile when he went over to the rug-rats tent and gave Justin what looked like 2 tubes of toothpaste but, we all know it wasn't toothpaste. Lars, Lukas, small tubes ... Justin n Kyle ... hmmm Keith was on his way back when a little naked Justin ran after him and gave him a big hug and kiss. ... He was already `naked' ?? ... and just what was in those tubes anyway? ... We'll find out in the next Chapter ........ Authors comment ...
