Another story you may enjoy is A Cantabrian Operetta, By Jonah in the same section Adult/Youth A Neglected Boy "The Twins" XXV jacoblion@tutanota.com The story is told by either Jake or Kori in alternating Chapters ............. As I looked at Kori I could see he was being torn between his love for archaeology and exploration and his somewhat new role as a parent. It's been a few months since the arrival of Justin and Kyle and at first, Kori wasn't sure about how to cope with extremely active and curious 9-year-old Korean rug-rats. What a few months have done is to make Kyle and Justin the center of Kori's life and everything else comes second. I thought of what Kori had just said .... "I've thought about it over and over again it's not a good idea for me to go at this time and I don't' want to be away `from the boys' and you now;" I noticed how Kori said .... "I don't' want to be away `from the boys' and you now;" the boys came first and that made me so happy. Kori now feels about the boys the way I felt about Kori when he was 11. My heart is at peace. I reached over and put my arm around him and pulled him close and said . . . "Kori you made the right decision, no discussion we're going to Italy all of us, you, me, Justin, Kyle, and Ethan. It is meant to be. I gently kissed Kori goodnight and we were off into a deep sleep. The night was interrupted slightly when Justin and Kyle snuck in and closed the cabin door without making a sound. They slid beneath the covers from the end of the bunk and in seconds were wrapped tightly in our arms. I believe that their visions were of far off magical places with flying carpets and beautiful green dragons dancing through colorful fields of wildflowers. We slept soundly through the night and neither Kori nor I or the rug-rats moved a single inch. It was 6:30 and Kori nudged me without waking the twins. There was at the door the slightest gentle tapping. I could smell the fine aroma of French Vanilla coffee. Kori gently kissed Kyle and slid from under the covers, that is until Kyle latched onto Kori's arm and said . . . "kiss me again dragon" and with that Kyle was wrapped around Kori saying . . . . "I'm hungry" . . . so much for tender moments. I turned to slide from under the covers when Justin hugged me and said . . . "not yet just a few more minutes." .... I turned back and hugged him and was just about to tickle him when I realized he was asleep. It's funny how the twins can be so much alike most of the time and then there are the other times when they are so different. Justin just wanted to be held like that boy who was once 11. Kori and Kyle were already at the table and Justin and I had about 10 minutes more of warm comfort and then like some Roman Candle he exploded shouting . . . "Come on Jake we gotta go we're going to Italy, don't be so lazy." ..... and was out the door, but the extra 10 minutes were worth it. Scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast were on the table and a nice hot cup of coffee. Ethan was all washed and dressed in his Hawaiian shorts and shirt and for some reason looked extremely handsome this morning. He was very attentive to everything and had a slight smile, not a devious grin, not sly, not one of those "the cat ate the mouse grins" just a very contented look about him. Ethan asked about how long would take to be back at Mystic and then about when we would be in New Haven. Kori seemed to be in a fog looking at winds, tides, and currents. I stepped in and interrupted Kori and said . . . "Kori! Ethan asked a couple of questions." Kori said . . . "Sorry, Ethan once we get into Vineyard Sound it's 80 miles to the entrance of Mystic River so with what looks like good wind 8 hours for that leg and an hour to the sound and an hour up the river to our slip next to the Charles w. Morgan at Mystic. So 10 hours and then an hour to unload, another hour to New Haven and unload so I think we should be home about 10 pm tonight if the wind holds." Ethan's smile had disappeared and just said . . . "Oh, Ok Kori thanks." Kori returned to checking the weather and charts. I had noticed that Ethan had been checking his phone a few times and asked . . . "Ethan is there a particular reason you were asking?" . . . Ethan replied . . . "Not really just thought if we would be home early maybe I could catch a movie with Felipe." . . . I said . . . . "Why not ask Felipe if he is free tomorrow and maybe spend the day with him." . . . . Holy cow did that ever put a smile back on Ethan's face and he was back at his phone texting. Breakfast was over rug-rats were washed and dressed and we dropped from the mooring at 8 am on the dot. Kori motored out and turned toward Elizabeth Island and into Vineyard Sound; turned to port and set a course of 260 degrees for Fisher Island then a course change of 355 degrees into the Mystic River. Kori explained everything to Ethan and handed him the wheel. Ethan was in his glory and took the position of the first mate. Nothing had to be said the expression on Ethan's face said it all. Kyle and Justin had the laptop and were seated between me and Kori in the cockpit. We were searching for everything about Naples, Italy we could find and things they wanted to see. Rug-rats have started a list and they're making me and Kori read everything and sometimes twice. Ethan was at the wheel and had Jabbering skipping along at just over 10 knots as he was listening to Justin and Kyle and answering the boys as they told him this and that . . . . "oh wow, yep, that sounds great, uh-huh, really. Now that worked till Kyle asked Ethan . . . "Do you have a girlfriend?. . Ethan answered . . . "uh-huh sounds good" ......... Kori and I laughed and Kyle n Justin just shook their heads then Kyle called Ethan, Bartholomew. That did it Ethan snapped out of his `dream' and shot Kyle a look that said . . . "You're dead meat Kyle" but then we all laughed and Ethan was turning red. Ethan hollered for me and Kori to tighten the sheet and Jabbering answered hitting the dancing waves causing the water to be thrown into the air. Kyle and Justin were so excited and were screaming . . . "Ethan make more, make more," as the sea spray looked like diamonds. There was a continuous rainbow about Jabbering as the sun hit the water as it was thrown in the air. Kori looked at the nav station and was excited to see we were now making 11.5 knots. We were all so excited to have the boat responding like this. Ethan was thrilled to have Jabbering at 11.5 knots and Kori complimented his ability. Justin and Kyle had their harnesses on and were tethered to the cockpit but wind and sea were perfect conditions for this boat. Jabbering was made for this and so was the crew. It was about 1 pm as we passing Block Island and again to the thrill of all we were joined by a good number of bottlenose dolphins. Some of the dolphins were playing with the bow of Jabbering as she cut through the water. Kori relieved Ethan at the wheel and took in some sail just let the boys have some fun photographing and videoing the dolphin play. Jabbering had settled down in the water and we were at a more relaxing pace. The afternoon sun was strong and hot. Rug-rats were doing their thing and quickly found the sunscreen and handed it to Ethan. I'm not sure what the boys were thinking but here we go again. Ethan was applying the sunscreen and was almost finished when he decided to apply a little more to Kyle's butt; ....... and gave a good pinch for calling him, Bartholomew. "Not good to fool Mother Nature or either of the rug-rats. Kori hollered at Kyle as he turned but it was too late and Kyle had grabbed the tube of sunscreen and squirted it all over Ethan and had him in a bear hug as well. Ethan and Kyle looked like two greased pigs and Justin sounded like one as he joined in. The cockpit was a mess !!!!!!!!! I was half laughing because Kori had lost all control and couldn't do a thing about it. I stepped in and in my best authoritative voice said .... STOP, Showers, Clean this mess up, NOW! ... Whoa, it worked. For about 10 seconds before they all started laughing hysterically. Finally, Kori got control and said . . . "Ethan, shower with salt water, and shower the boys too; then you, Mr. Trouble Maker Kyle and Justin spray down the cockpit and wash everything with mild soap. Don't move I'm not done . . . . Then rinse everything with fresh water and don't get a drop on me." ..... OMG, Kori should never have said those last words. The boys were almost at attention and didn't know if Kori was really angry or not, he gave me the wheel as he walked to the top of the ladder and turned looking at the boys and said . . . "Oh and Ethan when you've all finished here take the rug-rats down and give them a good shower." ..... Kori went below to make lunch. Geeeeezzzzzzz the rug-rats were chanting . . . a good shower, a good shower .... Ethan gives us a good shower. It was like Christmas for the rug-rats. I'm not sure if Kori intended this to be a punishment or a present but he surely made "The Twins" happy. Ethan showered and had the sunscreen all off and then started on Kyle and Justin and the laughs and giggles never stopped. They did as they were asked and in 20 minutes had the cockpit looking squeaky clean. Ethan was just about to take the boys down to shower when Kori stepped into the cockpit with ham and cheese sandwiches, chips, a large fruit salad, and OJ and sprite punch. I had to fight to get to a sandwich and almost lost my hand as one of them was like an Alvarezsaurs, a small 10-pound theropod with needle-sharp teeth. Ethan came to my rescue and handed me half a sandwich with only one bite missing I was happy to get that. Then my best boy Kori came round and gave me a big double meat sandwich and a little pat on my backside. Flashback .... I remember standing at the kitchen sink in Ashfield on a number of occasions when that 11-year-old kid patted my butt. . . . Well, the plate of sandwiches has disappeared the chips are all gone and the OJ & Sprite punch is empty. I looked at Ethan winked and he latched onto the rug-rats and they were off to shower. Kori came over; we were for a few minutes alone and it was nice just to hold each other even if for just a moment. Kori and I were laughing as we heard giggles and laughs from the boys below. Our moment ended with 3 handsome young boys as they entered the cockpit and gave us hugs. The afternoon passed quickly and we had turned north into the Mystic River and were safely docked in our slip more than an hour earlier than we had expected. With nothing to hurry about, we decided to just spend the night and pack in the morning for our short ride to New Haven. We had enjoyed a fresh salad with garlic rolls for dinner and decided to take a walk over to the Charles W. Morgan before going to bed. The night was beautiful with a clear dark sky and one thing led to another and then the questions. The biggest question was about Justin and Kyle and if they needed a visa. I already had the answer, No as citizens of South Korea they are not required to have a visa and can stay for 90 days. The real question is what do Kori and I need to have to show guardianship and that will be handled by the university. Everyone was happy and tired. Back on the boat, it was time for bed Ethan was making his bed and Kyle and Justin had already crawled into our bed. It was a very cool night and Kori and I happily wrapped our arms around the rug-rats and were asleep in minutes. I don't remember what time it was I just remember it happening; I had turned facing the starboard side and felt Justin as he hugged me and whispered in my ear . . . "no damn crab in this bed." And then he kissed me. Morning came late. The sun was hiding and there was the beautiful sound of the rain as it played music on the deck above. Kyle and Justin slipped from the bunk and Kori and I could hear the endless sound of pee and more pee. It stopped and I knew that the boys would wreak havoc on Kori and me any second. Wrong. Rug-rats simply lifted the covers at the foot of the bunk and crawled up between Kori and me and in seconds were sound asleep again. I think it was about an hour later now nearly 10 am and the wonderful aroma of coffee filled the cabin. I quietly pulled on some shorts and a t-shirt and joined Ethan at the table for coffee. Ethan was all smiles and wanted to know if I thought we could maybe have lunch or dinner at the dining room. I said . . . "Ethan why don't we drop you at the dining room on the way home. You can text Felipe and tell him what time to meet you there." Ethan was so excited I thought he was going to kiss me, he didn't. Then he was pounding away on that phone of his so I guess my idea was approved. Rug-rats and Kori joined us and we enjoyed a quick breakfast of cereal, juice, coffee, and tea. We cleaned Jabbering but made a plan to come back mid week and really make her shine. SUV packed and it was a quick trip home. Kori wasn't so sure about dropping Ethan at the university but agreed as long as Ethan would call us and let us know the plans. We watched as Ethan headed up the steps to the dining room and waved bye. Home in 5 minutes unload, shower, check emails and the phone rang. Kori answered the phone and I could only hear Kori's side of the conversation . . . . "Ethan slow down, ... no it's not a problem, of course not and we will come to pick you up; Ok Ethan "I" will come to pick you up. Just stay at the entrance where we dropped you off I'll be there in 10 minutes." To be Continued . . . . .
