A Neglected Boy "The Twins" XXXVIII jacoblion@tutanota.com Jake and I enjoyed a very warm and at times `hot' shower and the bathroom had this wonderful aroma of strawberries. I was thinking to myself that even as the years have passed somethings have remained the same. Jake has this incredible gift of being able to so softly touch that it sends some kind of electricity that just drives me to the edge is seconds; but then again, I've always been slightly quick to finish. I lie here watching Jake as he has drifted off to somewhere either near Neverland with the boys or in outer space and realize that this inflatable bed just isn't going to cut it. I know first thing in the morning I'm suggesting new real beds and we can save these for guests and I can only imagine that we will see plenty of guests here at the farm. It was just 6:15 and as Jake would say there was that damn sun screaming through the window and with no curtains is was really screaming. Jake almost awake turned over facing me and I felt two fingers on my stomach making small circles and there it was; that electricity. Most mornings I awoke slightly puffed up, if you know what I mean, but at the moment I was fully erect and enjoying the attention. Jake smiled at me with one of his devilish smiles then threw the sleeping bag aside rolled out of bed and said . . . . "It'll have to wait till later." And headed for the bathroom. I was not about to let Jake get away with this and was right behind him, morning wood and all, and then, and then ........ of course the knock at the door and two small little voices saying . . . . "can we come in?" . . . . Oh, this has to be some kind of game, right? The rug-rats have impeccable timing! Jake on the other hand says . . . . "Hey you two go get Ethan, French toast for breakfast and Kori and I will be right out." . . . . What `thing' had been excited just a minute before isn't any more. We all arrived in the kitchen at the same time so it was a family affair to get breakfast on the table that we had made from some boards we found in the shed. Our camping chairs were not at an ideal height so perhaps today we need to find some furniture. Jake broke eggs and added milk for the French toast, I made tea for me, coffee for Jake and Ethan or he may want milk or juice. As we sat for breakfast, I noticed that Ethan has Justin on one side and Kyle on the other and I wonder how long this scenario will go on. Brothers for sure but at times some difficulties do arise. I think at times we all would have liked to tie the little monsters to the mast on Jabbering and hoist them to the top or thrown them to the fish, geeezze I'm just kidding. Kyle asked . . . . "can we go fishing?" . . . . then Justin was all in for that but Jake said . . . . "I think first we need to find some furniture for the house and maybe some real beds." The discussion went from one thing to another with ... I want this and I want that and of course the money grows on trees. The result was that we were going to explore some places that have real nice used furniture. Ethan had a great idea and said . . . . "Do you think we could find furniture like almost antiques and then it would look like a real farm house, not that modern stuff.?" . . . . Well, everyone agreed that was a great idea because for the next few years this will be our vacation / escape to the country home if we're not on Jabbering. I thought it was perfect because not only we would be using it but Peter and Neil would be staying here while they built their house and workshop. With breakfast finished it was off for a quick walk around the property and down to the lower pasture to see where we thought Neil and Peter would build. The imps were out through the gate and at a full run toward the old orchard and Ethan was right on their heels. Jake, in that very adorative voice, hollered ..... "stop!" Shopping and let's get moving. Why he had to say that I will never know as the rug-rats and Ethan made a U turn and left Jake and I in the dust, literally; must be that breakfast gave them a burst of energy. We jumped in the SUV with Jake driving and off we went down the road past the school and there was our first stop. The first thing we spotted was the table. It was a 7 foot long maple table with benches on each side and a chair at each end, perfect! Ethan spotted a desk he liked and then Kyle and Justin had to have a desk as well. Over in a corner there were end tables and some desks and I can't believe it we found this beautiful desk in cherry for Ethan maybe 60 or 70 years old, then a long desk with side by side draws and round dowel back chairs that looked as if it came from a library and that was claimed by Kyle and Justin. That was all we found here so we paid for the furniture and would pick it up later. It was back in the SUV and off toward Vermont. We had traveled about 15 miles when the next store appeared. It looked old from the outside and I had a mental picture of just junk. Jake almost decided not to stop but who knows what treasures may be hidden in this old rundown half store half barn. Ethan and the rug-rats were first to enter ..... they stopped short, turned, and said . . . . "Wow it's amazing" . . . . Jake and I entered and it was a walk back in time to the late 1800s early 1900s. Jake spotted it first and was almost at a run toward this beautiful rolltop desk. It was Vermont Maple with 4 draws on each side and in perfect condition. While Jake, Ethan, Justin, and Kyle examined the desk I talked to the store owner. She was a lady well into her 70s and a grandmother type. I asked the price and she said . . . . "would $500.00 be to much?" . . . . I said nothing and handed her my Visa card and walked over to Jake and the boys and said . . . . "Jake I know you like this desk but I just talked to the owner and it's already sold." Jake and the boys were so disappointed and Ethan was rubbing Jake's shoulder saying . . . . "It's ok Jake we can find another one." . . . . A few seconds later the lady handed me the receipt and I thought Jake and the boys would kill me for making him think it was sold, well, it was sold and it was for Jake. We picked out some furniture for the living room found just the right bed frames and old-fashioned headboards but decided to buy new mattresses. Now what? We've purchased a truck load of furniture but only have an SUV. U-Hall here we come. Jake and the boys acted like we were going on some great adventure; well, I guess it was; and I was just as excited and I couldn't wait to see the desk I bought for Jake in what used to be his `den' as he called it; now we call it "a man cave". Time for lunch and being close to Vermont we stopped at Gramercy Bistro for a quick lunch of burgers and sweet potato fries. It was about halfway back where we picked up the U-Hall and now we were all furniture handlers. The remainder of the day was to load, unload, turn that desk on its side so we could get the other desk in and loading the truck at 2 places became more of a jigsaw puzzle than could be imagined. I don't know why so much work in warm humid weather became so much fun. I was amazed at how Ethan, Kyle, and Justin never wanted to stop; and I think the best thing of all was that for this time, these hours of togetherness, time stood still and all that was wrong with the world just disappeared. The truck was empty and returned and we were back at the house. Ethan was in his room fixing things and rubbing his desk with Fiddes & Sons furniture wax and it looked so beautiful. Ethan looked more like a proud father than a 16-year-old kid. Justin and Kyle were in their room rubbing out the polish that Ethan had applied on their desk for them. I stood leaning against the door to the `den' watching Jake as he opened and closed each of the 8 desk draws then opened and carefully with a clean cloth wiped the roller track. I walked across the den and standing behind Jake I wrapped my arms around him and told him how much I loved him and the boys. Everything seemed to feel so right and I was at peace with myself because I was home again. Silence was broken as the rug-rats came running and screaming there was a vicious animal in their room. Ethan was next through the door to see what was going on. The rug-rats grabbed Ethan and was tugging on him and telling him to kill it ....... Kill what?!!! ...... was Ethan's question as "The Twins" just kept saying the `vicious animal with huge teeth'. Twins and Ethan with Jake and I close behind went to see this vicious beast. ........ Where is it? ....... Nothing!? ....... Justin pointed to the corner by the window and now with a chair for protection jammed into the corner. Carefully, so very slowly and carefully Ethan moved the chair ............................... The rug-rats screamed as Ethan moved the chair and there in the corner shivering with fright was the cutest tiny 3-inch meadow vole, no it was not a mouse it was a vole and voles don't like to be in the house they like gardens and grass. Most likely it came in while we moving furniture. Ethan looked closely trying to see all the huge teeth Justin and Kyle saw. Now Jake, Ethan, and I were trying not to laugh but it was quite difficult. Jake found a small box and soon this vicious beast was returned to yard. Now the rug-rats deemed Ethan a hero and courageous and brave and Ethan accepted their praises along with hugs, lots of hugs. It was almost 6 pm and the next thing Jake and I heard was ........ "I'm hungry" ..... well in fact we all were hungry so it was stir-fry and ice-cream with strawberries for dessert. It takes about 30 minutes to make dinner and about 7 or 8 minutes to inhale it. We were all very happy and it was time for the `hot-tub', it was time to be naked for the hot-tub was what the rug-rats heard as they tore off their clothes dropping a shoe here a sock there shorts over the porch railing and how their Fruit of the Loom Underoos, the tiny ones, ended up on the lawn Jake and I couldn't figure out and apparently Ethan didn't care. Then there was a slight surprise as Ethan dropped his Airknit HD boxer briefs on the porch deck and joined Kyle and Justin. Ethan noticed Jake and I looking and just said . . . . "It just feels better this way, no big deal" Jake and I joined Ethan, Justin, and Kyle and we all listened to the little rug-rats as they told us of all their plans for the farm. There would be a garden with corn, and tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and beans and these two little farmers went on and on until Ethan asked . . . . "No horses?" . . . . now Ethan's question stopped Kyle and Justin dead in their tracks. "Horses?" Exclaimed 2 little Korean boys. The whole idea of a garden went right out the window and now we were talking about horses, five horses is the number they have arrived at. I had to cause a little trouble and mentioned . . . . "What about if you have a friend or 2 and Ethan has a friend?" . . . . then the conversation went around and round with lot of laughs as the number of horses grew to about 20 when we realized that Peter, Neil, Lars, and Lukas would be here as well. The farm with a big garden changed to a horse farm. We were all beginning to look like shriveled up prunes and it was time for popcorn and movies. Jake and I had talked about only 2 more weeks of summer and we wanted to sail so we decided to make this little plan. ...... Tonight, it was much more comfortable with furniture and a clean house; we were all content watching the movie when Jake paused the movie and said . . . . "commercial time and it is just enough time to get a big trash bag and collect all the dirty laundry because in the morning we need to run back to New Haven do laundry and head for Mystic and go for a sail. There's only 2 more weeks before school and let's split the time sailing and here." Well, I had expected some resistance to the idea and was ready to jump in with . . . . but, everyone was excited to go sailing. My mind was saying "What the hell is going on with all this agreement and no argument?" . . . . I best just be happy that everyone is happy with the decision. The laundry was all packed up and ready for just a few more things in the morning and it was back to the movie. Justin had crawled up with Jake and Kyle was happy sitting next to me and for some reason gave a little poke every few minutes till I hugged him in real close then to my surprise he fell asleep. Ethan waved at me with a big smile and pointed to Jake. I looked over at Jake and Justin both were sound asleep and Jake had his arm around Justin just like he used to do with me so many nights. I'm sure that Justin feels the comfort and love just as I did. My hope is that Kyle feels the same as he sleeps all cuddled up to me. The movie ended and Ethan gently woke Jake and Jake and I carried Kyle and Justin to their beds while Ethan grabbed a quick snack in the kitchen. With rug-rats in bed Jake and I joined Ethan and sat at our new very beautiful kitchen table for a few minutes. Ethan was very quiet. His face not sad, not happy, he was thinking and then he began . . . . "Thanks for making me part of the family. I never knew what it was like to feel like I belonged or to really be loved. I'm not saying my parents didn't love me they just couldn't express it like you guys do." ......... Ethan continued ....... "I always wanted to feel like I belonged not just to be a fixture; I always wanted a brother and now I have two and I love them so much. I just love you both so much and I want you to be proud of me and ........." I knew how Ethan felt I could feel his pain and I know he had been tortured emotionally for some time with the feeling of being alone, abandoned and nowhere to turn and no one to talk to. It's an emptiness that is so very difficult to explain if you have never experienced it. Jake interrupted Ethan and said . . . . "Ethan you have family that loves you and cares about you and everything you do. We will support you in all that you decide to do. We will stand beside you and be there for you all along your journey. You're right when you say your parents love you because they do, they just don't know how to express that love at this time." Jake and I had moved to sit beside Ethan and hug him and to reassure him that he was family. Ethan looked much better but I think that Ethan will every so often go through times like this. It was time for bed and Ethan was off down the hall to his bedroom and Jake and I were off for a quick warm shower and a good night's sleep. About 2 am I woke to find Jake with his arms around Justin but no Kyle. I slipped from bed and walked to what used to be my bedroom with Liam. I pushed the door open just a bit more so I could see Kyle, wait Kyle wasn't there. I turned back and walked a few feet more and looked into Ethan's room and there in Ethan's bed was Kyle with Ethan's arms around him just like Jake had his arms around Justin. I had a very warm and contented feeling. Morning and suddenly there was pandemonium when Kyle burst through the door flying through the air like some great bird landing right in the center of the bed exclaiming . . . . "Breakfast and you better get a move on!" and like some whirling dervish disappeared back through the bedroom door to the kitchen. No doubt about it we were awake me, Jake and Justin had been attacked and given orders to appear for breakfast or else. Coffee, tea, milk, juice, and pancakes were ready and the laundry was already stacked by the door. I looked at the clock on the wall 6:20, 6:20? "Ethan and Kyle, are you 2 nuts?" is all I could say and Jake wasn't saying anything till he had coffee but he did have a smile. We were informed by the 2 nutty kids, one young and one older that if we got a move on we could be in New Haven by 10 am. Ahhhhhh ..... Jake and I could see where this was going that would mean we could be at the boat by 1 pm and sailing by 2:30. Now just to be sure they got the point across Ethan had written on napkins ... "Block Island by 6 pm don't forget the bait." We sat eating breakfast as Kyle every so often pretend to be reeling in a big fish. .................. "Ok, Ok we got the message you two." Said Jake and things shifted into high gear. Breakfast finished, dishes done and put away. Close all the windows, shut off the water heater, put the bleach thing in the hot tub and turn off the electric heater to it and close the top close the back door and put the extra key on the nail under the porch. Justin and Kyle were already in the SUV and ready to go when Ethan was just about to join them ...... Stop! ....... Wait ........ Jake handed Ethan the key and said . . . . "You drive, and geeez be careful!" All of a sudden from the back seat in unison we heard . . . . "No, No don't let that reckless teenager drive" ....................... To be Continued . . . . .
