A Neglected Boy "The Twins" XXXIX jacoblion@tutanota.com It was just 8 am when we pulled out of the drive and a few minutes later we were on Rt. 91 South. This would be an easy drive and Kori and I have the confidence and trust in Ethan. Kori sat in front and I sat behind Kori as we made our way from Ashfield down to New Haven. Justin and Kyle were already on their Nintendo's and while playing the game they were talking about fishing and swimming. I can do one or the other, either talk or play the game but not both at the same time. Kori, Ethan and I talked about where we would sail and the general opinion was that Block Island would be the destination with fishing on the way. It would be good to pull into Salt Pond and anchor in Cormorant Pond again. Perhaps see some of our old friends then dinner at the Yacht Club or The Beachead Restaurant. One thing for sure is we are all looking forward to a few days sailing. Justin was asleep and Kyle had closed his Nintendo and was looking at Ethan and said . . . . "Hey teenager talk less n keep your eyes on the road." . . . . We all laughed, even Ethan, then Ethan had a little news for Kyle and said . . . . "Kyle it's about 30 minutes till we get home and if you know what's good for you, you'll disappear because if I get my hands on you, you're dead meat." ..... That just started things between Kyle and Ethan until we heard . . . . "Kyle I'm gonna hold you by your feet n dunk your head in the toilet!" Yikes! ...... Kori stepped in and said . . . . "Ok you 2 enough or I'll tie you both and drag you behind Jabbering for shark bait." ..... It just seemed to be a fun ride and Ethan was right and in 30 minutes we pulled in the driveway. Kyle crawled over Justin and was out the door taunting Ethan. Ethan was not about to let Kyle go any further and made a mad dash at Kyle. Kyle turned and tripped and fell flat and that was a very poor move on Kyle's part. Ethan was on top of Kyle in seconds. ! ! ! ! Kori and I and now Justin, awake, were laughing hysterically in the side yard as Ethan pulled Kyle's shirt off then pantsed him leaving Kyle to have to run up the stairs and around the porch totally naked. Justin was laughing so hard he couldn't get up off the ground. Kori gave the house key to Justin and said . . . . "Go open the door for your brother." ... Right! Sure! ..... Justin had the house key and was in slow motion trying to get his bag from the back of the SUV and seemed to have forgotten all about his brother. Conveniently. Ethan and Justin took their time walking up one step at a time, slowly, so very slowly around to the back of the porch. Kyle was all scrunched down in the corner by the hot tub begging and pleading to please open the door and saying he promised to be good to Ethan for a week. Ha! Kori and I would never believe that and Justin outright said . . . . "That's a lie! ..... Ahhhh, the door was open and Kyle at the speed of light disappeared to somewhere safe in the house. Laundry half-done it was time to gather things for a run up to Mystic I had Justin, Kori had Kyle, Ethan had the keys and it was just 11:20 and we were on the road to another adventure with Jabbering and our plan to sail over to Block Island. The 1-hour ride to Mystic went quick and everyone was jabbering about all the fun we were going to have. We pulled into Mystic and to our parking spot near Jabbering and for just a minute watched a rather large crowd over at the Charles W. Morgan. We emptied the SUV with our bags and groceries and took everything below. Ethan went topside and began to uncover the sails while the rug-rats and I began putting things away and making ready to get Jabbering underway. Kori checked in with the dock master and filed a sailing plan and by the time he returned Ethan had everything topside ready to go. It was now just to turn on the electronics check the engine, unplug from shore power, release lines and we were off. Just after 1 pm and we were heading down the Mystic River around Mason Island across Fishers Sound and right into Block Island Sound. As we entered Block Island Sound the wind was perfect at about 20 knots and Ethan and "The Twins" had the jib and main sail up. Kori and I with smiles on our faces watched proudly as the 3 boys worked together. Sails had caught the wind the engine was off and we were making 8 knots and heading 110 degrees straight toward Great Salt Pond, Block Island. With everything going so well we should turn into our anchorage at 5 or 6 pm at the latest. The sun was hot and with a 3-hour sail across the sound it was time of swimsuits and sunscreen. Kori and I had swim shorts on and we each helped to apply sunscreen to each other. Ethan was in a very nice-looking Speedo and was covered in Hawaiian Tropic dark tanning oil and Kyle and Justin had changed to their usual `nothing' swimsuit. While Kori was handling Jabbering, I tried to help Ethan put sunscreen on the rug-rats only to be told that Ethan does it better. I think I get it, I'm 45 and Ethan is 16, I'm dear `old' Dad to Justin and Kyle and Ethan is ..... well, cute, 16 and he seems to know how to put the sunscreen all over and never misses anything. Kori and I could see and hear the little imps giggle when Ethan got to those places; just enough sunscreen to make sure they wouldn't burn the tender spots. Now reading the directions it says to make sure to apply often and Kyle and Justin reminded Ethan about every hour. We were out about an hour when Justin and Kyle wanted to fish. Ethan went below and brought up the gear when all 3 boys heard Kori and me saying . . . . "Hey..... shorts, and boat shoes before you go any further." . . . . "aww Dad come on we can be careful ..... please ......." I didn't have to say anything because Kori responded . . . . "Nope, don't even go, aww, shorts and boat shoes or no fishing oh and t-shirts too you're getting to red." ...WOW .... Who's the Dad now? Oh maybe that is `Captain". Ethan just pointed at Kyle and Justin and then at the hatch to the cabins and all 3 disappeared and returned with shorts, T-shirts, and boat shoes. I'm beginning to think this is going to be a great trip full of fun but then there are those unexpected little surprises that will show up when least expected we can count on that. Kori and I every so often will have a quiet moment to talk about the boys and how they get along. It is surprising and isn't surprising beause all 3 boys have lost so much that they have turned to each other in such a loving way for the emotional support they need. Kori and I are there for them every hour of every day but their bond to each other is just so strong. The boys had line in the water but it was Ethan's pole that showed the excitement first. Justin and Kyle brought their lines onboard and cheered Ethan as he began to struggle with something on his line. The struggle continued for almost 35 minutes but in the end with the continued cheers and screaming from the rug-rats as Ethan landed a very large Block Island Bluefin. This fish was beautiful and gave us nearly 12 pounds of nice clean fillets that we can have on our trip and perhaps share at a nice beach party. The entrance Bell to the channel into the great salt pond was insight and it was time to start the engine and downhaul the main sail. We entered Great Salt Pond with a few waves and a whistle or 2 then made the turn into Cormorant Cove and to our delight there were a number of our friends and one friend that just had to remark that Kyle and Justin had shorts on. We found a mooring buoy and secured Jabbering then shut down the engine. It was seconds later that we were all ready for a swim. The water was cool and refreshing and without notice Kyle and Justin had thrown their shorts up on the port side of Jabbering and were making like little dolphins. Kori said . . . . "I thought perhaps they had become a little shy but I guess not." . . . . Ethan pulled himself up on the dive platform and got the big beachball and it was playtime. The game was challenging and Kori and I need to remind ourselves that Ethan, Justin, and Kyle are very athletic and they swim like dolphins. At one point the ball ended up in the cockpit and giving no thought about the fact that he was naked Justin just climbed on the dive platform and up the ladder grabbed the ball and tossed it to me; however not without hearing several horns, whistles, cheers and laughs from our neighbors. Being the little showoff that Justin can be he just waved and did a very graceful dive back into the water. Ok, ok neither Kyle nor Ethan were about to let Justin steal the show without some kind of challenge and Kyle was next up the ladder. He actually bowed and waved like some Olympic swimmer to the whistles and horns from the nearby boats. He positioned himself and sprung off his toes and entered the water like a knife, no splash. The competition was on! Ethan was not to be left out and standing on the edge of the starboard side he sprung into the air twisted and did a backflip entering the water with the slightest amount of backsplash. The show continued for some time but after about 3 dives each for Justin and Kyle we noticed they were in their Speedos. Kori and I just told them how nice they looked and our little rug-rats just said thanks. Ethan later let us in on why all of a sudden Kyle and Justin had their Speedos on. It appears after swimming, playing ball and the 3 or 4 dives `little things' were getting a little tender. We were all done with swimming and it was time for something to eat and the decision was grilled fish fillets and a mixed garden salad and homemade chocolate cookies for later. Dinner was special tonight as we were back on Jabbering together and in what I think will be our all-time favorite place to sail for weekend fun in the sun. The night sky came a little earlier and Ethan, Kyle, and Justin got out the large binoculars and began looking at the moon as it was just about half. Well, that occupied their time for about 20 minutes and then it was game time and we decided to play cards and we all love 500 rummy and Kyle and Justin are very good at it. The game is always nearly violent with the rug-rats and they hold their own. It was nearly 10 pm and we were all tired so it was quick fresh water spray on deck and then to bed. Kori and I were looking forward to a peaceful, restful nights sleep and our little imps had promised to remain in their cabin for the night. Please oh please let them be so tired that they sleep all night in `their' cabin. I don't even remember turning out our cabin lights. The gentle rock of the boat had me to sleep in seconds and I think Kori was asleep before me. I woke to the aroma of fresh coffee and that was great. I looked at the clock and it was nearly 8 am, wow, Kori and I slept all night together undisturbed and I felt like taking on the world. I splashed some cold water on my face and didn't wake Kori as I joined Ethan in the salon (saloon) to be more correct but pronounced salon for non-yachting peoples. I noticed that in Ethan's bed in the salon there appeared 2 figures all wrapped up in blankets I can only imagine who they must be. Some pirates that came aboard in the night. Ethan smiled at me and said . . . . "I know Jake they didn't stay in their cabin all night they ended up with me about 3 this morning telling me that there was a shark rubbing against the hull." Just how or where Justin and Kyle come up with all these stories is amazing but it also seems the Ethan doesn't mind them at all. Ethan and I enjoyed our morning coffee and soon we were joined by Kori with his strong cup of tea. We decided to spend the day with a little trip around to Grace Cove anchor and snorkel. It was about 10 minutes later that 2 very sleepy looking but handsome young boys appeared. They were soft spoken and very polite saying good morning to each of us. Kori, Ethan, and I asked who they were and where did Kyle and Justin go. These cute little boys just giggled and the next words spoken .... "we're hungry n can we have pancakes this morning?" . . . . Kori said he wanted liver and onions for breakfast and Kyle made like he was going to puke. It really was my turn to make breakfast so pancakes it was but with a big twist and I added banana's. Best way to make banana pancakes is to put the bananas in the blender and add milk then the pancake mix and make a real smooth batter. 3 X 5= 15 pancakes with milk, coffee, and tea and real cold orange juice. Breakfast over galley cleaned, release the mooring and out of Cormorant Cove and out and around to Grace Cove. Anchor down and set all the snorkel gear ready and it was in the water. The water is always very clear here unless there has been big waves and wind but today was just perfect and mirror calm. Now usually there would be 3 without swimsuits but today it was all 5 of us and it really did feel good. We did have a float with us much like an innertube and in it was our swimsuits and bottled water in a cooler with ice. We swam to the beach and walked along picking up shells and little treasures then swam back to the boat. It was time to pull up anchor and head back to Cormorant Cove. We decided to go for dinner at the Beachead Restaurant and called ahead to have the Yacht Club launch pick us up for dinner at 6. Anchored at the cove we had a quick freshwater shower and changed into nice shorts and shirts for dinner. The launch arrived promptly at 6 with a coxswain that Ethan had known but was not really friends with. We arrived at the restaurant and were seated quickly. Our hostess handed us menus and said the server would be over shortly. While waiting for our server the busboy brought warm fresh baked rolls and poured water. The busboy noticed Ethan at the same time Ethan noticed the busboy and Kori and I have never seen water poured that slowly, I think it took nearly 5 minutes to pour 5 glasses of water. I think I have seen something similar before at another restaurant and where do all these blue-eyed blond boys come from? Kori nudged my foot as it seems my attention was directed towards Ethan and his attention on the busboy. Our waitress arrived and Kori and I had lobster, Justin and Kyle had fish and chips and Ethan needed more time. The waitress returned in a few minutes and Ethan decided on shrimp with seasoned rice. As we sat it was very easy to see that Ethan although seated at the table with us really wasn't there but somewhere near the busboy in his mind. Dinner was excellent and we had paid the bill and were standing outside talking when Ethan needed to go to the restroom. We waited and he must have really needed to go as it took more time than we would have thought. Ethan returned and just said there was a long line however he did look rather pleased as he was looking at his phone. We were back at Jabbering and it was nearly 11 pm and Kyle, and Justin were ready for bed and were already in their cabin. Kori and I said goodnight to Ethan who said he was going to sit on deck for a little while. Now Kori and I have been this route before and I know Ethan and the busboy were texting and he was being just so damn cute. Thirty minutes later and Kori and I heard Ethan as he came down the ladder to the salon where he has the big bed. I was almost asleep when I could hear Ethan say . . . . "no you two go sleep in your cabin tonight it's to warm right now" ....... Then I could hear Justin and Kyle whining ....... "come on Ethan we want to sleep with you." Then I think Ethan was ready to kill Kyle when Kyle said . . . . "Ethan you gotta stiffy don't you n you wanna .............." Kori and I could hear rug-rats cabin door shut rather loud not slammed just shut with attitude. To be Continued . . . . .
