"and the best thing is Kori and Jake loves us and we're real happy here. I looked at Kori ...... he had tears welling up in his eyes and had to turn away from Karen and the boys. I said . . . "Karen we will all be home around 3:30 could you give us a call then?" Karen replied . . . "Jake I think that will give me time to make arrangements so I will talk to you then." Karen gave the boys a hug and shook hands with Kori and walked off. The boys had a questioning look and Kori was more than upset. We said goodbye to a few of the students who had been watching / eavesdropping and Lance walked right up to me and said . . . "We heard and don't let her take the boys." His tone was hard, harsh almost as if he either knew her or something about her. Kori and I dropped the boys back at school and then headed for afternoon classes. Not a word was spoken. I only had one lecture class and Kori had two but we both finished about the same time. On the way to get Kyle and Justin, Kori was quiet but asked . . . . "Jake can Karen really place the boys with someone else after they have been with us? Isn't that what happened to Liam being placed in one home after another?" "Kori I'm afraid that in this case she can and as she said it is what they feel will be in the best interest of Kyle and Justin. I did notice that Karen doesn't like calling the boys by Kyle and Justin and always refers to them as Ji-ho and Ji-hu and I am wondering if she has found Korean foster parents. Kori when we get home we need to talk to the boys and I think while they are having snacks will be best. I know you are having a real hard time with this and so am I but please try to smile and support the boys." Kori was not happy about this. He was just starting to understand what the feelings are when you have two little boys to love and support. When I think of Kori after high school I begin to realize how hard he has worked. Just think 4 years of undergraduate studies then 2 years of grad school here at Yale then 2 more years at Brown for his PhD. and no break in-between. All Kori knows is work hard and he expects the same from his students here. I see why it is so difficult to just relax and have kid fun with the boys. Even his sailing has to be with perfection. I was so in hopes that having the boys would teach him to relax and enjoy life a little. We had the boys and were home sitting in the kitchen with a nice fruit bowl topped with yogurt and I didn't want to start but I had to . . . . . "Boys you know Karen was at lunch today and she came over to tell us of some really great news. Karen has a real great family she wants you guys to meet" ....... Kyle interrupted ....... "No! we don't need to meet nobody!" Justin looked at me and Kori and asked . . . "Why do we need to meet them? ....." There was the question I really didn't want to answer; Kori had to get up and get more to drink because he couldn't look at the boys . . . . "Boys, Karen thinks that these nice people will be able to give you a very nice home" ........ Kyle interrupted again .... "We already have a "nice" home and we aren't going and she can't make us." Justin already had tears and was now holding me tight ......... in a very soft voice Justin asked . . . "Jake you and Kori love us you won't let her take us, please let us stay here, please?" How do you explain to 9 year olds what the law says? How do you explain that as strong as our love is that it is not strong enough to stop the law from taking them? There was that dreadful knock .... Kori answered the door . . . "Hi Karen please come in." As Karen entered the boys ran to their bedroom and shut the door. Karen said she has the appointment for tonight and the boys will be having dinner with the probable new Foster Parents. Kori called the boys but they wouldn't come out of the bedroom. Karen went to talk to them and there was no way they were going to open the door. Finally I had to go get them and it was killing me. I got the boys to open the door and come to the kitchen and I asked them to please be big boys and just go have dinner with Mr. & Mrs. Kimshaw. Finally through tears the boys shook their heads yes. Justin was holding my hand and Kyle had his hand in Kori's pocket. We broke their hold and Karen took their hands and as she nearly had to drag them out the door all we could hear through the crying was . . . . . "Please no we don't want to go . . . . Please." As the door closed Kori was in tears and went to the boy's room and slammed the door. I didn't try to talk to him I knew he was in pain and he needed time. For me it was like being torn apart. Kori and I had been together so long but were both professionals and although our love was strong we had this slight separation. The boys had brought us back together we were whole we were that family that Kori remembers from when he was 11 and 12; but now being torn apart. I didn't want to stay home and decided to go to my office on campus. I knocked on the boy's room door and told Kori I was returning to campus. Through the closed door I heard Kori say . . . "Jake I'm going with you." In 15 minutes we were at my office on campus and Kori was going for a walk. I think I was there for only 10 or 15 minutes when there was a knock on my open door. I turned as Lance walked in and said Dr. Roberts I need to talk to you. . . . He began . . . "I know Karen and you need to know she is trying to take the boys away from you because you and Dr. Preydon are gay. She only placed the boys with you because it was an emergency. Karen also is a racist she believes white with white, black with black and Asian with Asian." "Lance How do you know all this?" I asked and Lance just said . . . "It's something that happened to another professor two years ago that some of us know about." It was just 7:30 and I thanked Lance as my phone rang. It was Karen and she was in a state of panic .......... "Jake, ... Justin is in the New Haven Hospital emergency room can you please meet us there quickly?" I replied . . . "What's wrong? I'll get Kori and be there in 5 minutes." As she was saying Justin is throwing up. As I was out the door Kori was walking up the walkway I explained and we ran for the car. The emergency room is close and we were there in minutes. Karen met us and took us to the exam room where Justin and Kyle and the Kimshaws were. Kyle was wrapped around Kori in a second and Justin flew in my arms with that death grip. The doctor explained that Justin had vomited a number of times and the last time showed spots of blood. Justin would not release me and I asked the doctor if I could have a few minutes with just Justin Kyle and Kori. We were now alone with Justin. Justin and Kyle explained that they didn't like the dinner it was too spicy and just the first two bites gave Justin and upset stomach. The boys explained that the man said what was put in front of them is what they would eat and to be more respectful. The doctor asked Karen to come back in but not the Kimshaws as they just upset the boys more. I looked at Karen and asked . . . "Karen by any chance do you know Lance the tall black diver on the swim team?" Karen's face look surprised but said she didn't think so. She stepped back out to talk to the Kimshaws and we heard them say . . . "Well we really aren't interested in the boys at this time they really don't the profile we're looking for." That was interesting for us to hear. The doctor stepped out and addressed the Kimshaws . . . "So you are looking to be foster parents or perhaps to adopt and you have a criteria for selection is that correct? You do know how you sound as if you were shopping at some high end store. Please allow me to explain further, first you forced a child to eat extremely spicy food, you were demanding of the other child, you embarrassed the sick one and to be very honest I find you not fit to be parents at all. Now it is my duty as a doctor to note this in our records and report it to the state for review." There was nothing more said Kori and the boys had smiles but Justin was still sick. Karen stepped back in the room and said . . . "Jake and Kori I will make all necessary changes to your Foster Parent file showing you both as permanent foster parents for Ji-ho and Ji-hu if that is in agreement with you." Kori looked directly at Karen and said . . . "Jake and I would be most happy to be the foster parents of Justin and Kyle or as you call them Ji-hu and Ji-ho." The doctor stepped in and looked at Karen and asked . . . . "Just out of curiosity Karen do you have a problem with the names Kyle and Justin?" Karen answered rather bluntly . . . "No it's just their Asian" and abruptly left the room. The doctor gave the boys a hug but said . . . "Sorry Justin but we have to take a few pics of your tummy but it won't hurt and might be fun." Justin smiled and for the first time in hours Kori smiled too. We waited as Justin had his tummy pictures and the result of some blood tests. It looks like Justin is just a little sensitive to things all kinds of things. Some foods, loud noise, violent movies, and not being loved. We were on the way home and Kyle had a question for Kori . . . .......... he whispered in Kori's ear . . . "Kori, Justin is still not feeling well do you think we could sleep with you and Jake tonight, just tonight?" Kori answered . . . "You bet and I'm gonna squeeze you tight all night." I think everyone can guess the boys reply to that. It was home ....... boys to bathroom, pee, more pee and then a little shock ...... Justin began peeing orange, we all laughed it was something they had him drink so the pictures of his tummy would look better. In a few minutes we were all snuggled in bed my arms around Justin and holding him tight and then I heard . . . "Kori do that again it felt great." Kori had kissed Kyle and soon visions of little butterflies were dancing in our heads. It was sometime in the middle of the night and Kori had to pee. When he returned to bed I heard Kyle say . . . "Kori mine gets like that too." Dreams once again appeared like Disney movies of little elves dancing around a beautiful forest dotted with bright colored flowers. Nothing more disturbed our sleep till that obnoxious alarm sounded like some cranky old school master from the 1800's. Kyle and Justin were out of bed first and Kyle was sure to point out to Kori that both he and Justin had stiffies just like Kori had last night and it seems it's no big deal. Kori and I had to laugh because it brought back so many memories of when he and Peter and Liam and Garret and Riku would be sure to let everyone know just who had the morning wood. Kori and I had just enough time to hug and get a good morning peck when rug-rats pounced on the bed and it looks like someone is feeling much better. We had our breakfast of porridge topped with yogurt and a banana and were off the school in a flash. Last we could see of the boys were big smiles as they ran to find their friends. It was a usual morning I had one lecture class and a meeting. Kori picked up the kids and met me at the dining room for lunch. The boys walked in and the students greeted us and the boys were off with students but with instructions for Justin's lunch and no, I said No dancing. Lance looked at me pointed to the boys, smiled and gave Kori and I thumbs up. We had the boys back to school in the same clothes they started with so that is progress. At the end of school the boys decided they wanted to go to the pool and take the swim test for their age. We ran home quickly and gathered up their swim suits and gear and drove over to the pool. The swim coach for their age division was ready ................... First the boys had to swim the length of the pool and show the coach what they could do. Bloody fantastic is what Jake and I heard. Then the boys started from the platform and swam one length as fast as they could ... "Geeeez" these two have internal motors, lastly the twins told the coach they could dive........................... The coach told the boys their age group is not allowed to dive but he would like to see. The boys climbed to the 5 meter platform. Jake and I stood frozen. First Kyle ........ wow! No splash as his body entered the water cutting like a knife. I looked at Kori as Justin reached the end of the board, my heart pounding. Justin backed up about 8 feet ran hit the end of the board straight in the air did a twist and slipped into the water headfirst and the slightest splash. Immediately there were cheers from about 40 people watching. We hugged the boys and wrapped them in towels as the coach approached them. They made the team. Then the coach asked Kori and I if we would consider allowing the boys to be coached by one of Yale's best diving coaches. We knew the cost but then he said the University swim association would be happy to take care of it. We explained to the coach that we would need to talk to the boys and would let him know within a few days. On the way home we began to tell the boys and well that was all that needed to be said. Dinner was amazing and we helped the boys with homework, then TV, snuggle and story time and off to bed. Kori was so happy and had I think he settled down and was much easier with the boys. I see him beginning to let them in and at times he almost seems to be their age. We went to bed tired, happy, proud and excited for the boys. Tomorrow we will see the coach and let him know the boys will join the elementary school team and the Yale junior athletic team. I know Kori and I are so excited. ............ Who is their diving coach? . . . . . To Be Continued . . . . . .
