Thanks to all Nifty Staff for their help. http://donate.nifty.org/donate.html Story is fiction, names fabricated, locations accurate. There may be some sex; it will be gentle and loving. Just a reminder that the story is told by either Jake or Kori in alternating Chapters. A Neglected Boy "The Twins" XLIV jacoblion@tutanota.com I grabbed my brother and Ethan and said . . . . "Ok Let's show them how a real New England breakfast is made." . . . . Twenty slices of bread, 14 eggs, almost a quart of milk, 2 pounds of hickory Vermont bacon, 14 cups of coffee, a pot of tea, 1 quart of orange juice (OJ), almost a bottle of maple syrup, 2 sticks of real butter, 9 plates, 2 platters, 7 cups, 9 glasses a roll of paper towels and 7 hungry people and 2 pint size kids. That was a French toast breakfast and every plate was cleaned. Jake, Liam, Abby, Ethan and I had the opportunity to talk about the day almost uninterrupted because Kyle, Justin, Will, and Alex were really enjoying breakfast and not talking much at all. Unusual for the rug-rats for sure. Liam asked Jake how he intended to get the 16-foot 4x4s up straight and that 20 foot 4x4 across the top. ...... Jake thought ............ he thought for quite some time. ...... Ahhhh ...... Jake had the answer . . . . "Well, we will build it on the ground and then, you guys will dig 2 holes 4 feet deep, attach ropes to the top 4x4 and pull it up sliding the end posts into the holes ......" Liam and I were looking at "Dad" ...... Ethan was waiting for the response. Liam said . . . . "Nope! Not today, not tomorrow `Dad'...... we'll call that Woodard Construction guy and have him and his guys come and put it up while we go horseback riding. Then we'll know you and the rest of us will live to see another day." . . . . Ethan looked relieved, Jake was smiling that slightly clever smile he has, and I'm not sure that was not what he had planned all along. That Jake Roberts guy can be pretty sly sometimes. "Hey has anyone seen Alex, Will and those two little destruction kids?" I asked and sure enough there had been an escape. Ethan and Abby were first out the door flying across the porch and lawn running toward the horse trailers. There next to the barn were Justin and Kyle with Alex and Will up on their shoulders so the 2 little ones could look in at the horses. Liam, Jake, and I soon were standing behind Abby and Ethan just watching as Kyle and Justin were telling the other "Twins" all about horses. The story was remarkable as told by the rug-rats; ... We all stood back and listened as Justin and Kyle told this story. . . . . Justin explained .... "Well, it was a long, long time ago and the horses came from this far off island of huge creatures where there were dragons and dinosaurs," . . . . Kyle interrupted and continued ........ "and gigantic fish that could fly. On the island there were little people really small like you and Will", as he was looking at Alex, .... "but they had magical powers and rode the horses all the time rounding up all the other animals and putting them in a huge boat at night. In the morning they would open the door and let all the animals out." Alex and Will asked . . . . "You come from that place?" . . . . Kyle and Justin laughed and said . . . . "No, you guys so silly, our `Dads' and Ethan told us all about them big creatures." .......... Liam was about to crackup and looked at me, Jake and Ethan and said . . . . "Kori, you remember when `Dad' used to tell us stories like that, sounds to me like he still does." . . . . Standing there, Jake was smiling ear to ear and I know he still does; but how did Ethan and I become part of this? I called Woodard Construction and they said they could meet us at 1pm if it was convenient. Then Mr. Woodard asked if I was the Kori that lived with the teacher Jake Roberts. I said yes and he seemed excited to know that Jake and I had bought the farm. We really needed to get a move on if we were to have a good ride and be back in time to meet with Mr. Woodward. We checked all the horses and saddles; the 4 large geldings and the large mare were for Liam, Jake, Ethan, Abby and me and the 2 smaller horses were for Kyle and Justin. Alex and Will would ride with Liam and Abby, we were just walking this morning. We passed through the lower pasture gate heading toward the apple orchid. Justin's horse stopped to pee, of course we all waited, ..... Kyle was off to one side watching, his eyes were so big as Justin's horse drop his penis from it's sheath. It was as long as Kyles arm and as always, he said what he was thinking `excitedly' ...... "Whoa, Justin look down he's peeing n his dick is so long, .... Ethan, his dick is much bigger n yours!" . . . . "Shut up Kyle! ... I'm bigger than you, you little twerp" ... he was bright red and embarrassed. I convinced Ethan that only Justin, Liam and me could hear what Kyle said. I told Ethan I would have a real talk with Kyle. We rode on and Ethan was way up in front with Justin and Kyle right behind. Soon Liam was riding next to me and he just had to say . . . . "Kori remember when we used to measure ours and Peter was always bigger?" . . . . We both started to chuckle and were happy that Jake was far behind us talking with Abby as we began to remember other things like with Riku. Liam remembered .... "OMG Kori that kid loved sex I remember the first time he sucked me up in the train room; I don't think you n Peter knew about it, he did me a lot more but I only did him once." ........ I looked at Liam and said . . . . "Holy sh... Liam I never knew you did that." . . . . Liam smiled one of those sheepish smiles and went on to tell me that he wasn't so innocent or naive as I thought, but wasn't going to tell me when we 11 and 12. Then he told me that he let Riku suck him off all over the farm when he was 11 and 12. Then he said . . . . "Kori you and Peter and even Garret were doing it too, so don't go thinking stuff. I bet Justin and Kyle know more than you and Dad think n you told me they sleep with Ethan sometimes. We both heard what Kyle said." All of a sudden we heard Jake close from behind saying . . . . "If you go any slower we'll spend the night here so let's get a move on." . . . . Well, we were way back of Ethan and the rug-rats so we did move a little quicker. The ride all through the apple orchid was beautiful. Some of the trees were still producing a good number of Cortland and Gala apples and the aroma was intoxicating. Soon we were back at the barn and had just unsaddled the horses when Mr. Woodard arrived. He was much older than I remember but then again, I'm sure I looked much older too. Mr. Woodward and Jake along with the rest of us, except Abby, Alex, and Will, joined in the directions for the swing set. I'm sure Mr. Woodard understood perfectly especially when Kyle and Justin finished explaining just how high and wide it needed to be; then they described how wide each seat had to be. Justin and Kyle held their hands apart and Mr. Woodard took a tape measure to get exactly that measurement between their hands. It was so cute to hear them describe in every detail, it must have been when Jake and Ethan were talking about it. Mr. Woodard told us he would have the crew here at 2:30 and the swing would be up by 5 but it would be best to let it set so the cement could cure for at least 4 or 5 days. OMG the rug-rats reaction; it was what Justin said that took everyone by surprise as he said . . . . "Holy sh- - Mr. Woodtard you no good builder my Dad could do it and we could swing tonight!" . . . . Mr. Woodard laughed but Jake was furious and quite embarrassed he looked at Justin and Justin knew he was in big trouble. With Kyle and Justin, it's the eyes and Justin had great big tears already. Jake just said . . . . "House Now!" . . . . Justin turned and started for the steps and I could hear him crying. Kyle didn't say anything but walked away toward Justin; he stopped turned and looked at Jake and said . . . . "We don't need no swing just forgets it." Mr. Woodard looked at Jake and said . . . . "Jake don't worry we'll have the swing up and maybe we can figure a way the boys can use it tomorrow but best you go take care of your boy. I think he was just protecting you." . . . I have never seen Jake react the way he did but it was very obvious to me, Liam and Ethan that Jake was feeling horrible right now. Jake walked off toward the house and Ethan, Liam and I just thanked Mr. Woodard and walked him to his truck. Liam was looking at Ethan and I and said . . . . "Since Abby and I have been here we noticed how much you all love `The Twins'. Kori as much as you and Dad love both boys, and you really don't show any favoritism the thing Abby and I have seen is that Kyle has attached himself to you and Justin very much to Dad." Liam was correct Justin always crawls in Jake's lap and Kyle is always hugged up to me and when they snuggle in bed it's the same. Moments later Jake appeared with Justin riding on his shoulders and Kyle was skipping along then wanted up on my shoulders. Jake's eyes were all bloodshot and he appeared sad; kids can do that to you. Ethan came to the rescue when he asked Liam for a piggy back ride and they fell on the lawn and it started another pig-pile and laughter and more laughter. It was a good time for hotdogs and hamburgers and the rug-rats agreed because they were starving. After lunch we decided not to ride but instead to have a volleyball game and play horse shoes. We called to have the horses picked up and drove iron stakes in the ground so we could play horse shoes. Mr. Woodard and his crew arrived and began to put up the swing. Abby put Alex and Will in the bedroom for a nap while we played volleyball. It was Abby, Lian and Ethan against me, Kori, Justin and Kyle. ... Liam cheats! Ethan cheats and so does Abby. "So they won, so what." We all had so much fun. The rug-rats attacked Ethan and Liam every chance they got and I haven't seen Jake laugh that much ever. I love him so much. The volleyball game was over and we sat for a few minutes having cold drinks then went to that old shed part of the barn where we used to have the camping gear and fishing poles and found some old horse shoes for a game after dinner. I whispered to Ethan to go ask Liam to make his special Shepherd's Pie for dinner. Wowwww Liam was so excited and it was going to be a huge one with lots of garlic bread. The mention of garlic bread brought up Peter and Neil and the next hour we all talked about those two characters and that they would be giving up the business in Valberg and building a new house and workshop down just past the lower pasture. It was late afternoon Mr. Woodard and his crew had finished the swing and it was Big! Real Big and we all went to look at it; 5 seats and the top was 12 feet in the air. ...... It was almost 6 when Liam began his famous shepherds pie. Three pounds of hamburger, eggs, applesauce, seasoned breadcrumbs and a lot of other things. In the oven for 1 hour and 14 minutes at 325 that was the secret. While that was in the oven, we all took a walk describing all the things we would do when we visited the farm. Of course, Jake and I would still be teaching at Yale, Ethan would be back at his school and the rug-rats at University school and swim team. Abby and Liam would be back at Boston but the best thing was that long weekends, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and winter break we would be at the farm. We decided that it would be best to just have horses brought over for when we were here. It is almost the same driving time for Abby and Liam as for us to drive up from New Haven. We finished our walk and just sat on the back porch and talked about how nice it was to have our family back together and then there was the smell of the pie in the oven. Liam was in the kitchen when he hollered out . . . . "Dad, Kori, does Neil and Peter have the sleigh?" . . . . I hollered back . . . . "Yep Neil has it but its in Maine and I hope we can get it here as soon as Peter and Neil get back for the winter." Dinner was ready and being such a nice evening, we ate on the back porch. Liam had made the shepherd's pie just like he always made it and it was so good. Then it was ice-cream with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Everything cleaned up and now for horseshoes. Liam, Kyle and Ethan against Jake, Justin and me. Abby sat with Alex and Will and took hundreds of photos and video. The game was even and it was Jake's turn he tossed the shoe it hit the stake went around twice and there it was a perfect ringer. He had one more shoe to throw but he thought he twisted his wrist and gave the throw to Justin. We won!. We were all happy, full and tired. It was time for showers and I was looking forward to a little fun time. Ethan took Kyle and Justin with him and Jake and I had a few minutes to enjoy a nice warm shower together. I guess we were both more tired than we thought and Jake seemed really exhausted. We tried but tonight I think we really just wanted to sleep. Justin and Kyle came back from their shower with Ethan and kissed Jake and I and said they were going to sleep with Ethan. Justin whispered in Jakes ear . . . . "Dad I love you." and off the rug-rats went. I think Justin was reassuring Jake that everything was fine and he wasn't mad. Jake and I talked for about 20 minutes about how special this was; we were just about asleep when the door opened and Justin and Kyle crawled in bed. I said . . . . "Hey I thought you guys were sleeping with Ethan tonight?" reply ...> "Nope he's texting Keith n told us to go sleep with our Dads." .... Hmmm .... they've been in with Ethan for 20 minutes? Doing what? and now Ethan is texting Keith and wants to be alone??? Dang Liam has me thinking and it's probably nothing ............ We were tired and in seconds were fast asleep. About 3 I woke and Jake was in the bathroom it sounded like he was throwing up. He came back to bed saying he ate to much and it was a long day. I don't think it was even a minute and we were asleep again. I awoke again but this time Justin was shaking me saying Dad's sick. I looked at Jake and he was all doubled up holding his chest. I didn't even ask just reached for the phone and dialed 911. I told the operator send an ambulance I thought Jake was having a heart attack. I sent Kyle to get Ethan and Justin was holding Jake and crying. Ethan came running and I told him to go wake Liam in seconds Liam and Ethan returned and Jake was in terrible pain. Ethan was able to get Justin to let go but we could get Justin more than a foot from Jake as he was screaming ....... "Dad I'm sorry over and over ............." Liam held Justin while Ethan ran to meet the ambulance. It arrived in 5 minutes with a sheriff's car and it turned out to be Deputy Morgan. Things were all crazy and now Abby was up with Alex and Will. Thank goodness Deputy Morgan took charge. We all got dressed best we could as they had Jake hooked up to so many things and were wheeling him out and into the ambulance. Kyle and Justin were crying and just wouldn't stop and Justin was screaming and sobbing to the point he puked. Morgan drove ahead of the ambulance lights and siren. It was to the same hospital as where my mom died, I was getting sick, Ethan was crying and trying to hold Kyle and Justin. Then Justin was on the floor throwing up over and over. We arrived at the hospital and they wheeled Jake in with 3 doctors at his side. They brought a second gurney for Justin he had completely collapsed. They rolled him to emergency put an IV in with something to stop him from throwing up and to calm him down and then gave something to Kyle that in minutes put him to sleep. Liam, and Abby with the kids were in the emergency room with Kyle and Justin and I was with Ethan just outside the room where Jake was. I asked Ethan to go stay with Justin and Kyle and ask Liam to come here with me. It took Liam almost 5 minutes to Join me and almost immediately the ER doctor came out and said Jake was stable but critical and they had called for a life flight to Massachusetts General in Boston. Liam had turned very pale; I was sick and sweating and we could see the lights and could hear the chopper as it was landing. Only one of us could go with Jake and that was going to be me. Liam had his hands full getting everyone else to Boston. I gave the keys to the SUV to Liam and told him to give the keys to Ethan and have Ethan follow Liam to the hospital there. Then our friend Deputy Morgan said . . . . "No you both will follow me it will be faster." Jake was being wheeled to the chopper and a doctor walked me out, I stepped up and was strapped in and we took off for Boston. Flying time was 20 minutes. We landed and Jake went directly to surgery. It was 2 hours later when Deputy Morgan, Liam, Ethan, Abby, Justin, Kyle and the twins arrived. Morgan was carrying Justin and Ethan had Kyle. A doctor and a nurse with a gurney arrived for Justin and they immediately hooked him up to and IV with electrolytes. They explained they had received all the information from the other hospital. Justin was severely dehydrated and the continued vomiting has caused small tears in the esophageal mucosa. Justin and Kyle were so young and had been through so much, why ....................? Now it was wait just wait and the seconds felt like hours. Two hours later the surgical suite door open and the surgeon walked out. It was his warm smile that immediately told us Jake would be fine. He explained that it was a blood clot that had caused the heart attack but after a number of diagnostic procedures following the surgery they can't say where the origin of the clot was. It could have been something very simple like a bump to an area where there was a weak blood vessel. The very good news is that Jake would be up and around tomorrow but with limited exercise. Moments later Justin arrived in a wheel chair looking much better, his color had returned and so had his voice but very soft. Jake was moved to a private room and only I was allowed to sit with him until he was fully awake. Outside Jakes room Liam and Ethan paced continuously. I felt Jake's hand squeeze mine, he was smiling and I knew everything would be just fine. The surgical nurse came in followed by the surgeon and I was asked to step out. Liam, Abby, with Alex and Will, Ethan with Kyle and Morgan holding Justin's hand all asking questions at the same time. I could only say he was awake and had a smile. The door opened and the nurse and doctor stepped out and said Jake was remarkable and it would be a very short recovery. We were all allowed in but only for a few minutes. Just as I was about to go back in the doctor pulled me aside and explained ......... "Dr. Preydon I have spoken with the pediatric specialist that attended to Justin and he and I have discussed what appears to be a very sensitive and emotional relationship between Justin and Dr. Roberts" ........ I interrupted and asked . . . . "Please call me Kori and Jake not Dr. Roberts" . . . . The doctor smiled and continued . . . . "Ok Kori, we feel that it's best for a quick recovery for both Jake and Justin that we move a small bed in the room with Jake for Justin. Justin feels that he is the fault of Jake's heart attack and we're having a pediatric counselor visit with Justin and Jake together later this afternoon." It was time for everyone to give Jake a rest break and time for me to explain what was going on. Kyle was glued to me and Ethan and Liam and Abby understood but nobody was going anywhere till Jake was leaving the hospital. The only person that had to leave was Deputy Morgan. Soon a small bed was wheeled into Jakes room and rolled right up next to Jakes bed. Liam picked Justin up and put him on that little bed next to Jake, they were both smiling and Justin was asleep in seconds. A nurse arrived with a cup of juice and a little pill for Kyle and soon after Kyle was very calm and looked really tired. Abby thought it would be good to run home with Alex and Will to let them have a lunch and a nap as their home was only 15 minutes away. Liam stayed out in the lounge area just a few doors from Dad's room and Ethan and I took Kyle to the cafeteria for lunch. We returned to find Liam asleep in the chair and gave him a break so he could have lunch. When Liam returned, we took a peek to see how Jake and Justin were doing. We just peeked in and it wasn't really a surprise but the little bed had been pushed away, and there was Justin all wrapped up in Jake's arms. Ethan made the next move and quiet as a mouse pushed the little bed back against Jake's bed and Kyle crawled up and was fast asleep in seconds. Ethan, Liam and I turned just as the nurse walked in ..... uh-oh ..... she smiled, winked and gently pushed Liam, me and Ethan out. Jake is remarkable. The doctors said he was very strong and his recovery was extremely fast and was released the next afternoon. Where the blood clot originated will just be a mystery and our family project now will be to keep Jake calm and quiet for a week and make sure he takes all the medicine. Watching Justin, we don't think there will be any problem with that he checks the clock about every 15 minutes and hasn't moved from Jake except to pee. We were back in Ashfield and at the farm in time for dinner. Liam picked up all their clothes and toys gave Dad a hug and kiss and was headed for their home near Boston. Just before Liam left he turned and said . . . . "Dad you're in good hands with Kori and Ethan and the rug-rats; but you should know they all have my phone number and if you misbehave, they will call me and then you'll have to deal with me ....... Just remember how much we all love you." ...... We heard Liam as the Wrangler drove out of the driveway. To be Continued . . . . . The library is so old and hardly anyone goes there anymore, so the floor is covered in piles of books that never got put away. The only source of light coming from large windows with the sun singing through, giving the room that warm golden glow as you rest your body in a half-circled pile of books next to an old wooden ladder. A ray of sun falling nicely on half your sleeping face as you lie there curled up with an open book on your chest. The young librarian casting his shadow over you for a moment before ruffling your hair, removing the book and throwing his jacket over you, as he continues to walk down the aisle letting you sleep, even though it's past closing time. The sound of him playing piano waking you for a moment, then lulling you back to sleep as you know you are warm, safe, and right where you belong.........."
