After Christmas" jacoblion@tutanota.com It was 7 am, the morning after Christmas, and Kori and I woke to a rather empty bed for a change and the aroma of Amaretto coffee, bacon and laughter. There seemed to a lot of excitement in the kitchen and curiosity had got the best of Kori and I as we were hurriedly pulling on shirts and t-shirts. The laughs and excitement got much louder as we rounded the corner and walked in the kitchen. I had to slap Kori's arm to shut him up from growling at the boys, all the boys. I have no idea what got into Ethan, Keith, and Antonio that made them think Justin, Kyle, Lars, and Lukas were capable of making a New England Breakfast.!.! Kori and I, and now Peter, Neil, Liam, and Abby are standing watching what appears to be a Kids Gourmet Cooking Show complete with teen camera operators. It was a show alright! Abby was a little out of sorts and was trying to get them to be quiet and not wake Will and Alex and for some unknown reason whatever she said sent 4 boys, Lukas, Lars, Kyle, and Justin, into a fit of laughter. Kyle and Lars were making pancakes and looked like they had about half of the pancake mix in their hair and on their t-shirts and the other half in a mixing bowl that was very small. Way to small! Keith was trying to explain that the bowl was to small to add milk but he wasn't getting through to them and it was to late so thankfully it was on the table and would be easy for Ethan, Antonio, and Keith to clean up! Justin and Lukas were making scrambled eggs ... Yep, that's what those 2 were doing ... and Ethan, Antonio, and Keith would have a slightly more difficult time cleaning that mess up. Neil, Peter, Abby, Liam, Kori, and I did compliment the boys on serving breakfast and it was pretty good, pancakes were a little lumpy and I did find a piece of shell in my scrambled eggs, bacon was perfect, chewy. For 9 and 10-year-olds they did good. I guess the important thing here is that the boys wanted to make breakfast for us. It wasn't easy for me to say that as I'm looking at the kitchen. Soon Alex and Will appeared and Abby got them dressed while Liam made their breakfast and then Abby got them dressed again. For some reason Will and Alex hate t-shirts, well they don't seem to like shorts either; actually, they don't seem to like clothes period. With breakfast over and the three teens cleaning in the kitchen the rest of our group went for a walk down to the site of Neil, and Peters new house and workshop. Lukas, Lars, Kyle and Justin were in charge of Will and Alex. The entertainment and excitement never stopped with two 9-year-olds and two 10-year-olds trying to keep up with two almost 3-year-olds who never wanted to go in the right direction. Liam and Abby began telling stories of when they were in high school with Peter and Kori, and Kori and Peter quickly changed the subject. Neil and I were smiling because we knew most of the stories about Peter and Kori. Kori looked at me, his face was slightly pink it must have been because of the cold and wind, `yeah right', and I just gave him a hug and a little pinch on the butt. Neil sometimes just can't help himself and had to add . . . . "Abby, some of the best stories were when Garret and Riku were here and Peter and Kori would join them and explore the woods; I never could understand why they spent so much time in the woods, why I remember........" Neil was interrupted, (more like shut up) by Kori and Peter, very red faced, bringing up when Neil brought Dusty over so we had 3 horses to ride, they did change the subject and Neil got the hint. We returned to the house for lunch and the kitchen was immaculate but no one to be found. Kori opened the door to the basement and hollered to Ethan, Keith, and Antonio that it was time for lunch and soon 3 teens appeared very flushed as if they had been skiing or working out. hmmmm. I wonder how many times they................ My thought was interrupted when Liam and Abby said they would be heading back to Boston after lunch. It was a rather happy/sad lunch because not only Liam, Abby and their kids were leaving but Neil, Peter, Lukas, and Lars would be setting off back to Maine. Justin and Kyle were already fussing about why couldn't Lukas and Lars stay. Neil tried to explain to the rug-rats that he and Peter and the boys needed to pick up some things up from their home in Maine and would be back soon. It was almost 2 pm when Liam, Abby and their boys left and just after 2 when Peter, Neil, Lars, and Lukas pulled out of the driveway. Kori, Ethan, Keith, Antonio and I stood waving as they drove off; in one way I was sad and, in another way, I think I took a deep breath and would enjoy a day or two of peace and quiet. Kori had a look of real disappointment it was so obvious that he still had deep feelings for Peter. We were in the house for about 20 minutes when Keith and Antonio appeared with their bags packed. Keith and Antonio both needed to return home and spend some time with their families or we may run into trouble with parents and grandparents. It was just after 3 pm when Ethan, Kori, Kyle, Justin and I waved as Keith and Antonio drove out of sight. Ethan was obviously upset and our rug-rats, although they had stopped crying, were in a very poor mood. Rug-rats in a poor mood is never a good thing. For the rug-rats well, their moods can change rather quickly and as soon as Kori and I said the horses would arrive in the morning things changed quickly. Actually, we all felt much better spending thirty minutes fluffing up the stalls. It was late afternoon and time for a game or movie and some hot chocolate. Kori and I were on the love seat near the fireplace and Ethan was sitting on the couch with Justin on one side and Kyle on the other while we watched "The Grinch". I don't know what happened, ... but, when Kori woke me it was 6 pm and he pointed at the couch and all 3 boys were fast asleep. Dinner tonight was very easy with all the food left from Christmas day. Kori and I cleaned the kitchen while Ethan worked on an English project for school and the rug-rats played an Xbox game. We were all tired and Kori and I had a really great surprise when Kyle and Justin announced they were sleeping in their own room ... what was that? ... rug-rats sleeping in their own room, seriously. ... Ohhhhhhh, the look on Kori's face. It was about 3 minutes and Kori and I were in the warm mist having a `hot' shower. The second time I lasted a little longer but Kori was just as quick; he recovered and the third time I let him get almost to the point of no return, then stopped touching him, he was begging and so damn hot ... ever so gently I touched his shaft sliding it back and forth 3 times and he arched back and it was over. The night was good, ... quiet and Kori and I slept through the night and when morning came it was as if the sun decided to give us a break and came gently peeking in the window. Hmmm? No aroma of fresh coffee, no bacon, no noise ... something is very wrong. I flew out of bed, naked, down the hall ran smack into Ethan, who had this big naughty smile, looking directly at ... yes that area just south of my belly button. Ethan pointed at his bed and that is where I found two rug-rats all curled up in the center of the bed fast asleep. I trotted back to my bedroom pulled on shorts and then back to the kitchen to help Ethan with breakfast. Ethan said . . . . "Jake I didn't want to wake you and Kori, ... Kyle and Justin were cold in the night and just came and snuggled with me." .......... This morning Ethan and I made French toast smothered in butter, real butter and topped with a choice of syrup or sliced strawberries and whipped cream. It was a difficult decision but it ended up three to two strawberries and whipped cream. I admit I missed Keith and Antonio and it was something that Kori said when we got into bed about the house feeling empty that really was so true. Breakfast over, dishes done, kitchen cleaned and what the hell is that noise? ........... Oh, the horses have arrived! ... Justin and Kyle were back in their bedroom jumping into their clothes and Ethan was already out the door. It was time for a good ride down through the upper and lower pastures, out the gate turn north and head for the old orchard. Neil and Peter have decided to only cut a small area where Peter's new workshop will be and the rest of the orchard will be left as is. I think there is more to this, and I think Neil and Peter are planning to bring the orchard back to producing good fruit. We were at almost that spot where we saw the black bear. We walked maybe another 100 feet and there he was all shiny and just having a great time with the few apples still on the trees. Now Kori and I thought that this time of year he would be sleeping in his den. At home we found that black bears slow down and spend most of the time in their dens or caves; however, they still snack a little throughout the winter. Seeing us he turned and was off. We were back at the house and having pepperoni pizza for lunch when there was a knock at the door. ........ Surprise! ........ Standing at the door was Antonio and his grandfather the judge and his mother. The Judge, Antonio and his mother joined us and we just put another large pizza in the oven and removed the rug-rats from hanging on Antonio who happily had his arms wrapped around the little monsters. I was a little surprised at the visit and I think Kori and I were slightly anxious when the Judge said . . . . "I'm sorry for the uninvited visit but I thought we might have a little talk." Ethan, Antonio, Justin, and Kyle saddled the horses and rode in the upper and lower pastures while Kori, the Judge and I sat in the living room and talked. Kori and I were very surprised when the Judge began with . . . . "Jake, Kori, ... Antonio's mother and I wanted to talk to you directly and not on the phone. I don't know what you have here or how you work your magic but since Antonio has been spending time with you and your "clan" he has changed dramatically." Antonio's mother, looking directly at me, stepped in with . . . . "he's polite, no bad words because he says you and Kori say educated people have a better vocabulary than that, he helps at home with dishes and makes his bed, he doesn't argue with his father like he did ......" the Judge interrupted and said . . . . "Antonio is happy and we've not seen that for more than 3 years. He calls your boys his brothers. ... Jake and Kori, we don't know how to thank you but it seems you have taught Antonio how be happy again. We are so thankful to have you in his life and as our friends." I think Kori and I were completely lost for words. We asked Antonio's mother and the Judge to join us and watch the boys ride. As we were standing at the gate Antonio's mother asked if Antonio could stay until we came back to New Haven for school. Kori explained that the way he and I see it Antonio is just part of the family; the way Keith is. Kori and I got hugs and the Judge and Antonio's mother shook hands and said thank you and they headed back to New Haven. We left the boys to have fun riding and returned to the living room where the Judge had left Antonio's bag with clothes and some games. On the coffee table was an envelope with $1,000 and a note saying ... anything he wants and take all the boys someplace special, "My treat" just signed ...
