A Neglected Boy "The Twins" LXVII jacoblion@tutanota.com Kori and I were not surprised that our bedroom remained quiet all night. Now the sounds of laughter and that incredible smell of fresh coffee said it was the beginning of a new and exciting chapter in our lives, just like most days. I was first out of bed and Kori just steps behind. We heard sounds from the laundry room and opened the door to see what was going on .... Ha! ... busted .... Antonio had a large pile of towels feeding one at a time into the washer .... It was the sheepish guilty little smile that said what activities had happened in the still of the night. Standing at the kitchen counter pouring my coffee I said out loud ... "Little boy actors, tween boy actors, and teen boy actors fill the house". Kori looked at me as much to ask ... "What did I mean by that" ... then as I looked at Kori then at Ethan ... Kori realized Ethan was walking without any limp. ! . ! that twisted ankle was just fine. Good acting received lots of attention and I think the attention lasted well into the night. Every one of the boys was happy, smiling, humming little tunes all trying not to look guilty. Well, they weren't guilty of anything but being boys; Kori and I know there must have been tons of fun after our little talk and that National Geographic movie. Oh, for sure the giveaway was that undeniable smell as Antonio was feeding towels in the washer. The boys treated Kori and me to their version of a `real' New England breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, baked beans, toast with strawberry jam and it even included pepperoni pizza. The fridge was empty but bellies were full. ... Kori looked at the boys while looking at the stove, counter and pile of plates on the table and said . . . "Wow, that was really good I'm stuffed ..... Jake and I will go watch the morning show while you guys clean up." Lorenzo looked at Antonio, Keith, and Ethan and said . . . . "You lose ... I'll collect later when we get back to your house." ...... he was looking directly at Antonio, ... hmmm, Antonio had this big smile as if paying up was going to be more of a pleasure than a real payback. Looking at the front of Lorenzo's PJs it was very obvious what he was expecting. Kori and I knew what was going on but our little big mouth just had to explain in detail and Kyle looks at Kori and me and says . . . . "Yep, they had a bet with Lorenzo that if we all made breakfast you `Dads' would clean everything. ... If `them' guys over there lost they had to do whatever Lorenzo wants .... haha ... they lost `Dads" so they gotta do what Lorenzo wants ... right `Dad, right?" Everyone was looking at me and Kori and I was just about to try to suggest a compromise when Kori jumped right in with . . . . "Kyle, you are right ... a bet is a bet so `them' boys have to do whatever Lorenzo wants" ... the `tent' in Lorenzo's Pjs got bigger as well as the smile on his face. I think Antonio was just about as happy as I'd ever seen him. Kori added just one last statement . . . . "Remember the oath ... ``I swear I will never lie to one of my brothers or try to get them to do something they don't want to do'. ...... hmmm, that was pretty slick of Kori to add that. I looked at Lorenzo his smile almost vanished ... but, then he noticed Antonio still smiling with thumbs up ...... Lorenzo's smile got even bigger, he won. Soon Antonio's grandfather arrived and Antonio, Marco, and Lorenzo, with his big smile, were gone. Ethan and Keith piled Lars and Lukas in Ethan's new Willys Jeep and were on their way back to the farm. Suddenly the house was quiet; just Kori, Kyle, Justin and me. Why do I feel sad? Kori decided to run over to campus to work on a presentation that he needed to give to the International Archeological Group next week with Dr. Sue at Brown University. I'm alone with our rug-rats. This next week will be the week from hell with swim meets a week before spring break and then the Regional Swim trials and finals. A nonstop week morning till night. Justin and Kyle were in their room playing a game or reading ... they love to read. I went to the den and worked on lectures for the next week thinking how great it will be to head back to the farm for spring break. I finished my work and headed for my big chair in the living room. I must have dozed off but soon realized that Justin was crawling in my lap. I'm still surprised at how little "The Twins" have grown. Justin and Kyle are so different and at the same time so much alike. Kyle is the boss, the take-charge type, hard exterior but a real softy inside. Justin is the opposite very gentle and loving all the time, except when he and Kyle are together then they can be tyrants. Justin wears his heart on his sleeve. He hadn't said a word. He was all nice and warm all cuddled up with his arms wrapped around my neck and his head on my chest. I was slightly cramped and shifted ever so slightly and, at that moment, I felt my shirt cold and wet................ .................I put my finger under his chin and lifted his head to see his eyes. Tears were streaming down his face and dripping onto my shirt; his grip around my neck tightened. In the softest whisper I heard Justin say . . . . "no die Dad, no die Dad no die. As I kissed him and held him tight, I noticed a crumpled photo in my lap of Justin and Kyle when they were about 5 with their mother. It had been just over a year since the accident that took their mom and dad. I know Justin and Kyle have moments now and then but not to this degree. I think it was the sudden emptiness of the house that started this episode. Suddenly there were loud sounds of crashing things in the kitchen. With Justin clinging to me so tightly I entered the kitchen to find Kyle smashing one plate after another. Kyle looked at me angrily, tears streaming down his face as he screamed . . . . "I hate you; I hate you, where's my `Dad'? ... one plate after another hitting the floor. ............I calmly tried saying "I'm your dad Kyle me and Kori are your `Dads' I love you" ... only to hear Kyle say .... "I want my other Dad why did he leave me? ... Justin has you ... I want my other Dad" Justin let go of me and ran to his brother throwing his arms around Kyle knocking him to the floor. The boys lie on the floor crying ... I heard ... "Mom, Mom, Momma" ... my heart was breaking as I text Kori with the emergency signal to come home quickly. I sat against the kitchen wall holding Kyle and Justin and listening to the sound of two little boys sobbing at the loss of their mother. It was the longest 12 minutes of my life before Kori walked through the back door. Kyle heard Kori's voice and in a second was in his arms wrapped tightly around his neck. I heard Kyle ask Kori . . . . "Why did you leave me `Dad'? Kori was in tears............................... We sat for another hour in the living room with Justin and Kyle either on our laps or snuggled close on the couch. Crying had stopped and both boys were relaxed and very quiet. I managed to make some hot chocolate and creamy tomato soup and although the silence was never broken cups and soup bowls were emptied. It was just 7 pm when Ethan and Keith walked through the door Kyle and Justin were in their arms in seconds. Kori sent Ethan and Keith a text to communicate the situation rather than discuss it openly. There was no crying but Kori and I noticed Keith's shirt wet with Justin's tears. Kyle asked for more hot chocolate but wouldn't let go of Ethan and it was obvious that Justin was not about to let go of Keith. Kori and I were exhausted from the emotional stress and were somewhat relieved when Ethan and Keith carried our little rug-rats off to their bedroom. It was 8:45 pm when 4 starving boys appeared, starving is what they said but all 4 with big smiles. Kori and I for the first time in hours felt relief. We headed for the kitchen to rustle up some good old fashion New England sausage and eggs for those starving boys. Ethan and Keith looked at Kori and I and said . . . . "Hi "Dads", but I think we got this taken care of, you want to have a snack with us?" . . . . Well! guess Kori and I aren't needed after all. Justin and Kyle were smiling ear to ear as they got out eggs, milk, bread, and Maple syrup and Ethan and Keith were getting down the large griddle. Sometimes Kori and I don't give Ethan and Keith the credit they deserve. Seems having the rug-rats enlisted as junior chefs has done the trick to making great big smiles. Question??? ...... is this French Toast or eggy bread, or gypsy toast or Poor Knights of Windsor toast? Tonight, the rug-rats inform us that this is `gypsy toast' a very fine treat for "big boys"! ...... (hugs and kisses for the teens later) ...... Well, our very fine treat was amazing and Kori and I volunteered for kitchen duty as the rug-rats scurried off toward their room for clean undies, so they said. There was that happy sound of little feet pounding down the hall then a brief stop ... then the sound got louder as those little feet were heading back to the kitchen. Rug-rats rounded the door, bounced into the kitchen and wrapped themselves around Ethan and Keith. ... Nope, not crying, actually with great big smiles ... Kyle gave Ethan a big sloppy kiss on the cheek and was off back down the hall in a flash. Justin, on the other hand, was resting his head on Keith's chest close to his neck, then looked directly at Keith, ... Kori and I heard Justin say . . . . "I love you" ... then gave Keith a little kiss .. directly on the lips .. slid to the floor and ran back down the hall. Keith looked really surprised, Ethan laughed, poked Keith and said . . . . "puppy love"............. Keith may have been surprised but Kori and I aren't. Justin attached himself to Keith the first time they met and it's been growing stronger. The week was just plain crazy. It was lectures and exams for Kori and I swim lessons, practices, and meets for Ethan, Keith, Kyle, and Justin and then final events just before spring break. Antonio, Lorenzo, and Marco didn't miss one event and we have had some of the most exciting and fun-filled days. In celebration of the boys, all placed at the top in every event both Great Wall of China and Zeneli Pizzeria have given them winners parties. We all know Antonio's Grandfather had something to do with that. Now we are all looking forward to a week of fun at the farm in Ashfield. What surprises will Peter, Neil, Lars, and Lukas spring on us? We had one day to get everything ready and try to pack the SUV and Ethan's Willys for the next 10 days at the farm. Surprise, surprise ... guess who just arrived to let us know Antonio, Lorenzo and Marco will be joining us as well? ... Ok we already knew the Judge would be stopping with a ton of clothes and camping gear, fishing poles, iPads, backpacks and more stuff we weren't expecting. What we didn't know was that Antonio, Marco, and Lorenzo were staying the night instead of arriving in the morning. It's going to be an interesting night. Why you might ask? ... Well, it's the smirk on Antonio's face as he looked at Keith and Ethan. The entire house was in a good mood. Ethan, Keith, and Kori with the help of some excited others had carefully packed the SUV and the Willys. It was very interesting how the Willys was packed leaving room for only 1 passenger in back, Antonio, as the other seat had backpacks, extra clothes, hiking gear, boots and as Kyle said .... `lots of stuff'. The boys were making the last trip and checking every item on the list when the phone rang ...... "hello" I said with a very cheerful voice. I was very surprised to hear it was Jim, Keith's father. Jim asked if there was a chance to speak with Kori and me in private and that it was very important. The timing of Jim's call wasn't great but what could I say it was Keith's dad asking and he wanted to speak with Kori and I without Keith. He suggested that perhaps at the McDonalds close by in 30 minutes if that would be good for Kori and me. Jim sounded serious and there was an urgency in his voice. I didn't even think twice and said it would be fine. Kori and I told the boys we wanted to gas up the vehicles so we could save time in the morning and left Ethan and Keith in charge. Antonio and that smirk. Kori drove the Willys and I took the SUV. We arrived at McDonald's to a much bigger surprise. We walked in to find Jim and Keith's mother as well as the Judge ...... what the hell is going on? We grabbed a cappuccino and sat as Jim began ........... "Jake, Kori we needed to talk to you both before we talk to Keith." ...... He and Keith's mom were very serious............... ...................Jim continued . . . . "I've been offered a position with Red Star Aviation in Australia and have accepted. I will be leaving tomorrow and Keith's mom and the other kids will follow in 6 days. Keith will be with you at the farm and I didn't want to spoil things for him, Ethan or the other boys or for you and Kori either"............... ............. Jim continued . . . . "I know well perhaps better put I'm aware of the bond between Keith and Ethan. I see how they are ... well, mostly I hear from Keith how they are like brothers and reading between the lines I think Keith loves Ethan to death. Guys, neither his mom or I wish to break them up and that's why we've asked to meet with you." I looked at Kori and we both knew what was coming as Jim continued . . . . "Keith's mom and I know how much you and the Judge have done for Keith and we really don't wish to uproot him from what has become his life and move him to Australia knowing it would break his heart to leave Ethan .......... we thought perhaps you might be willing to accept guardianship but will understand if that is not possible." Keith's mom and dad both had tears forming as the Judge slid guardianship papers to Kori and I. Neither Kori or I even hesitated nor said a word just took the pen and signed. The papers only made legal what Kori and I already knew ... Keith has been family since day one. Our home would be so empty without him. There is no reason to go into the details of how Keith's parents reacted but now we need to get home so Keith's parents can have a little time with their son. We opened the back door to the sounds of an angry crowd. It seems there was a bloody all-out Monopoly war in progress and Marco has tried to cheat, no it was Lorenzo, no it was Antonio who was pointing at Kyle pointing at Justin. Then.......... dead silence as they spotted Keith's parents and the Judge ... who just heard Antonio use a word or 2 he shouldn't have. There was an audible gasp! A look of shock on Keith's face as he asked . . . . "Mom, Dad, what are you doing here?" ........... never mind the explanation ... Keith, Mom and Dad, and the Judge were off to the den to explain what was happening. The rest of the crew were being rude all talking at once being nosy wanting to know what was going on. Kori and I just told the brats Keith would explain later. The den door opened and Keith followed by his parents and the Judge walked out ... down the hall through the kitchen and out the back door. The bratty crew ran to the windows and watched as Keith waved bye to the Judge and his parents. ................back door opened and closed, footsteps through the kitchen across the hall and into the living room........... ...........Shock! ... Keith walked over next to the rug-rats kneeled down kissed Kyle on the cheek grabbed Justin and kissed him right on the lips and said . . . . "We're brothers!" ......... WHAT? .... Kori and I never expected that or that the rug-rats could smile that big. Everyone else just had their mouths open like catching flies. I think Justin's reaction caught everyone by surprise including me and Kori ... he grabbed Keith, by the ears I think, and kissed him right on the lips; then he looked at the shock on everyone's face and said . . . . "brothers can do that!" Everyone was giggling or laughing especially when Ethan said . . . . "puppy love". I think there is something more going on in Justin's head as I noticed the tenting in his little boxers. Perhaps the rug-rats growing has been in less obvious places. Keith explained what had happened and said how happy he was for his dad to have received such a great job and would be seeing lots of kangaroos. He didn't have to say how happy he was to be staying here because the tenting in his shorts as he looked at Ethan said it all. ... Antonio was being bad. If we wanted to get an early start to the farm, we needed showers and get to bed. Ahhhh, the peace and quiet as the boys headed off to bed. Kori was finishing some work he needed to send to Dr. Sue so I told him I was going to shower and he said he'd be along shortly and I was looking forward to it/him. I had the heat lamps on and the shower on a very warm rain setting. As I stepped under the warmth of the rain, I could feel my body relax and it felt heavenly. I heard the curtain pull back as Kori stepped in. My pulse increased rapidly as hands began to soap my back and arms. My breathing quickened and the gentle massage felt just like when Kori was 14 ... just like he was 14. I spun quickly ... now face to face with Antonio. His finger went to my lips as I was about to say stop. I felt hopeless as if I were under his spell. Antonio wrapped his arms around me and pulled close, so close that there was no space between us. I could feel him, I could feel his heat I could feel the pulse in his erection. I heard Antonio say............... ............. "I want you; I want you to love me, please Jake" . . . . I don't' know what happened ... I pulled Antonio to me and kissed him passionately. I felt his hand drop to my erection and I didn't even try to stop him. I was in his grip and it was pure ecstasy; I know I was about at the point of no return when I dropped............................
