Just a reminder the story is told by either Jake or Kori in alternating Chapters. A Neglected Boy "The Twins" LXXV jacoblion@tutanota.com I sat on the back porch watching the boys playing a game of dodgeball. The setting sun bathed the sky in a warm golden glow, and the edges of thin wispy clouds were illuminated in shades of red, orange and purple. Kris was in the chair to my right wrapped comfortably in a nice warm blanket. His condition is much better and although the bruising remains evident it is much less than when he arrived. His smile is so sweet and gentle, I have no idea how someone could hurt this boy. The back door opened and I could smell the amoretto coffee as Kori approached. I looked to my right as he handed Kris a cup with a straw, OJ, and sprite I bet, a gentle kiss to the top of his head, and then handed me a fresh hot cup of my favorite coffee. Kori and I sitting in the same spot we had sat in so many times. This time was different, Kori was different, and I could tell. Just a little more than a year ago it was University, Archeology, Research, students, the house, "the boat", becoming a known archeologist `Name'. We were together as we had been for some time but he was very much an "individual". I look back at that time and the years slightly before and it was his need to prove who he was; not to me but to himself and "his" community. I'm almost afraid to say that at that time although he loved me, loved me very much, he was beginning to see me as `old'. Then came "The Twins" and ... Oh, how things have changed. Kori and I are more alike, more in love, more a team, more like parents, more aware of every little thing that influences our every thought. We hear things better than ever before; we don't necessarily understand everything we hear; we just hear it better. I felt Kori's hand slide on top of mine. He didn't say anything, he didn't need to. ....... Whoa ... Kyle just got hit with the ball and not even a second later Justin got hit when Lars kicked it. Double trouble out of play! ... Double trouble approaching at high speed screaming ...... "Their cheating `Dad' ... come help!" Kyle pounced on Kori knocking him on his back and now straddling him .... "Them other boys cheating all the time ... do something Dad" Kori regained an upright position holding onto Kyle, looked at me then grabbed Kyle like a big sack of potatoes and marched him right to the group. ... ... ... Kori set Kyle on his feet and said (the wrong thing) ... ... "Kyle it's a game; you got `tagged out' ... now if they cheat go do something about it" ... ... ... Oh, No Kori your didn't really just say that .... This is "Kyle" 1 against 7 in an all-out war of kickball ... 2 against 7 in an all-out war of kickball as Justin joined Kyle ... ... 3 against 6 as Marco joined with Kyle and Justin then Lars joined with them and the game turned to soccer and Ethan was on Kyle's side now and things were getting exciting. No one had to ask who side Kris was cheering for. The game ended and the boys were in a playful mood. Best of friends, brothers all. Antonio and Keith helped Kris in the house and Kori and alone again watching the evening sky begin to turn to a calm dark gray. Neil, and Peter were in the house with the boys and I heard the back door open and figured they were about to join Kori and I. ... Wrong......... Two handsome little Korean boys made their way across the deck and stepped in front of Kori and I then backed themselves between our legs. The reaction was immediate as Kori and I simply wrapped our arms around our little munchkins. ... ... Yes, ... Kori is different ... He's a `Dad'. Rug-rats had a big question and that was, could they go to bed with us first, and could I tell them a story then ... because we will go back to New Haven tomorrow, they'll go spend the rest of the night with the other boys in their own bedroom. Now they wanted to make sure Kori and I would say yes so, to make sure Kori and I get the sweetest little kiss and hug. I guess you could say "sealed with a kiss" and then they were gone. Kori and were getting chilled. We thought while all the rest of the gang, including Peter and Neil, were watching some action movie about a race car with a mind of its own it would be a great time for a `shower'. Warm water and a hot shower and no interruptions. Kori was in the den working on some notes for a new lecture. I was sitting at the kitchen table having a nice cup of coffee and listening to this exciting movie they were watching. Antonio came in and smiled. It's funny how things have been since Kris arrived. Keith told me Antonio hasn't had any sex with them and he knows not with Kris either because Kris is to hurt. Antonio was walking around doing this and that and wiping the counter. Soon I felt his hands massaging my shoulder and neck. It felt wonderful. His hands are small and soft and his touch is gentle. I felt his warm breath as he whispered . . . . "Jake, I need a shower." . . . . I turned grabbed him and pulled him to my lap and reminded him of the rules. Smiles! Antonio was a step ahead of me and said . . . . "Kori already said it's Ok" . . . . I gave in. We were in the master bath and he set the water to fine mist on the main showerheads and gentle rain on the top shower head. I think I was quite excited about this. Antonio stepped in and handed me the wool sponge. I began lathering his neck and back down to the tub and back to his neck. Antonio backed against me and said . . . . "Could you just hold me? ... I don't know when we can do this again and I want to remember the feeling of being loved." I held Antonio his head leaning back against my shoulder. Slowly I began to wash his chest. This was a different Antonio. Fragile and loving. I think it was about 30 minutes when Antonio's thoughts went to Kris. He simply said . . . . "Thanks for loving me" ... ... ... and was gone. It was our nightly ritual of snacks and everyone off to bed. Kori was in the shower and I was entertaining a couple of very handsome and cute rug-rats. The story went a little like this. Once upon a time a long, long ago ... ... "How long-ago Dad?" ... ... Justin, it was very long ago almost a thousand years ... ... "Wow, that's older than you Dad" ... ... Yes, Kyle much older than me ........ now on with the story. There was a dragon named Puff and .... Puff, the magic dragon lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honahlee. Little Jackie paper loved that rascal puff and brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff. Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail ... ... "Just like us `Dad' on Jabbering, we love sailing." ... ... and Jackie kept a lookout perched on puff's gigantic tail. Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came and Pirate ships would lower their flag when puff roared out his name. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys and painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more and puff that mighty dragon, ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane without his life-long friend, puff could not be brave so Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave. Puff, The Magic Dragon by Leonard Lipton, Peter Yarrow I looked up to see Kori ... he was trying to hide some tears. Kyle lifted the covers and Kori in a second was all hugged up to Kyle. Oh well, a minute is more than nothing as the 2 little tyrants gave me and Kori a quick little peck and disappeared through the bedroom door. Last we heard was . . . . "We gots things to do bye see ya later" Perhaps it was a warning ... the night turned ugly. A spring cold front hit dropping the temperature to below freezing. The wind howled nonstop all night. The evergreen bushes at the corner of the house at Kyle and Justin's bedroom scrapped the siding sending the boys looking for protection from everyone. Ethan and Keith to the rescue. Inflatable beds, blankets, pillows, several battery lights, we keep for power outages, and even some cookies turned the living room into a great campout. Kris was in a very well protected spot on the couch with Antonio propped up near his head. I spotted Kris's hand resting right on top of Antonio's head. The morning was quiet. Well, the morning was quiet till the Tasmanian devils threw open our bedroom door, entered without knocking, and like a whirlwind or tornado ascended on Kori and I exclaiming . . . . "Breakfast now, Ethan said hurry ... then pack and get your _ _ _ t in the car" . . . . KYLE! . . . . you're grounded for a week! Kori and I hit the table about the same time Peter and Neil did along with everyone else. Breakfast was great. Gypsy toast and heaps of bacon. All the boys were going on and on about how they would miss each other and Lars and Luks said it's not fair because now they have all the horses to take care of. Kori and I packed bags, Keith and Ethan packed the SUV and the Willys. The arrangement: Keith and Ethan decided it was best that the rug-rats would ride in the Willys with Ethan and Keith and Kori and I would have Antonio, Kris, Lorenzo, and Marco. We were packed, one last walk through the barn. Then it was hugs all around along with a few little noticeable pecks on the cheek. We were just about to get in the SUV and Willys when Peter said Stop!............ ............We froze and everyone looked at Peter as Neil handed Peter 3 small boxes. ... The Magnificat 7 became 10 as Peter gently placed a new compass around Lorenzo, Marco, and Kris's neck, and in European fashion a kiss on each cheek. The boys now all brothers. Knights all and members of a very special brotherhood. We were just about to pull onto 91 heading south to New Haven when Ethan pulled sharply off the road. Keith jumped out and Justin squeezed by ran to the nearest tree. It was not a large tree. It was a small tree and stood about 3 feet high and not more than 2 inches in diameter. Not facing the woods, no ... he was facing the road for all to see. We did see. My question is ... "Why do 10-year-old boys need to draw geometric designs when peeing?" He forgot to pull his zipper up but did remember to give us all a wave as he ran back to the Willys and jumped in the back with his brother. Ethan released the brake and the Willys moved forward about 2 feet stopped and the other "brat" ran and found the same tree. ... You didn't have to ask! ... Yes, he did exactly the same thing but I think we figured out that he made circles, not squares. Kris was still giggling after 20 miles down 91. It didn't stop much as Marco and Lorenzo told stories about the rug-rats when we visited Italy, and Kori had to tell about them dancing and waving, naked, to everyone when we entered Cormorant Pond at Block Island. Kris was quiet for a few minutes then told us everything he remembered about the day we had the water fights near Grace Point and then on the boat. What he said next brought tears to Kori and me. He told Antonio, Lorenzo and Marco that it was the best day of his life. We arrived home and Kori and I helped bring Kris to the back deck. Kori was thinking fast and turned the heater on to the hot-tub. I thought it was a little overacting ... Kris didn't really need that much help but he didn't refuse it and I think he was enjoying the attention. Lunch. What should we have for lunch?" The SUV and Willys were empty, everything dirty was in the washer, lots of towels, all the clean clothes had been put away and I could tell Kori was about to starve. Let's take a vote ... Ok, let's not take a vote and just order Chinese. Ethan and Keith were off to The Great Wall of China while we made the kitchen ready for a very hungry crew. Seriously, they haven't done anything how can they be this hungry. I watched as Kris hobbled out behind Antonio and were standing checking the water at the hot-tub. I just looked at their faces so innocent and gentle. I can only think these two boys by some design were scripted to be together. It wasn't chance, it was by design. Lunch arrived, inhaled and fortunes read. No, I'm not reading mine. Kids were playing games, watching TV that was until Ethan said the water was hot. Two boys were streaking through the kitchen out the back door and were in the hot-tub in seconds. Lots of laughing. Marco was naked, Lorenzo was naked, Antonio hesitated for almost 5 seconds ... naked. Kris was looking and trying to figure this scene out ... did he want to join them or not to join them? ... ... ... Well, he really didn't have much choice with Keith on one side and Ethan on the other carefully removing his shirt and Antonio unbuckling his pants and sliding his boxers down ... tada ... naked. The boys all got out and helped Kris into one of the lounge seats with the water jets. Then they all got back in. Kori had the tablet and I think he took 20 or 30 pics. Ethan, Keith, Justin, and Kyle, Marco, Lorenzo, Antonio and Kris all packed in the hot-tub like sardines. It lasted just for the pics then Ethan and Keith said they needed to have showers and go over the schedule for the next 4 weeks. ... Hmmm, and Kori and I were buying that story, sure. 6 boys were looking like prunes but I think it did Kris a lot of good physically and emotionally, he is looking so much better. The boys all got out, dried and were in nice looking clothes when the Judge arrived. He was in a good mood and Antonio and the boys were all happy to see him. For Justin and Kyle and Ethan it's almost like they gained a grandfather. Keith is adjusting not sure what to make of this. Antonio's grandfather asked the boys to get all their things ready while he had a little chat with Kori and I. It seems that Kris's father has been arrested and charged with multiple child abuse crimes including, neglect, physical and emotional. The Judge will appear as a witness on behalf of Kris as will both doctors who were the attending physicians the night he was attacked by his father. The Judge thinks perhaps 40 years. This time the parting was very difficult for everyone. Keith, Ethan and the rug-rats watched as Antonio's grandfather drove away. We all were sad and it felt so empty. I can only describe the feeling as if a best friend died. Ethan and Keith came to talk to Kori and me and showed us the upcoming schedule for the week with classes, swim lessons, meets, diving lessons. Ethan asked if we could let him stay with Keith at the dorm for the week. Kori said yes quickly and I was a little more reluctant but, in the end, it did make more sense. Kori drove Keith and Ethan over to the dorm and made plans to meet for breakfast or lunch on days when our schedules matched. I was home alone with "The Twins" and loved it! Kori returned form the University just in time for a bath, bed, story, and dreams of Dragons, and Knights. ... ... ... It doesn't' get any better than this.
