Just a reminder the story is told by either Jake or Kori in alternating Chapters. A Neglected Boy "The Twins" LXXXVII jacoblion@tutanota.com I was sound asleep when all of a sudden Jake screamed. I turned just as he threw off the covers. ... ... Standing just inside our cabin door stood 4 `guilty' little tyrants laughing hysterically. In the middle of our bunk, running in circles, was the reason for all this commotion. Justin, Kyle and their sidekicks Lars, and Luks found Jake in all his nakedness quite amusing. I'm not sure Hamburger and Hot-dog were as amused as the 4 `brats' as a matter a fact judging by the puddle of pee from Hamburger he was as terrified as Jake. Kyle took one look at Jake and in a panic stepped over next to me and scooped up the hamsters and he and the other little monsters made like a magician's act and disappeared. Jake trying to control his laughter was also trying to pretend he was about to wring someone's neck. He was shouting at the brats threatening them with what he was going to do to them. ... Ahhhh, just in time ... down the companionway came Ethan and Keith with fresh baked Danish pastry, still warm mind you. Now the teens thought it was pure genius on the part of the rug-rats and company and complimented them on their creativity. Fortunately, Jake didn't hear that. Coffee, tea, OJ, hot cocoa and a large dish of scrambled eggs with onions, green peppers and crumbled breakfast sausage to accompany the Danish pastry. Breakfast was excellent and fun with little mouths and their exciting "Tale of Two Hamsters" on an adventure. Galley cleaned by who? ... ... Yes, that is correct ... Lars, Lukas, Kyle, and Justin, and Jake made it clear that everything best be spotless and secured for getting underway. Or Else! .......... Why do the rug-rats and friends giggle when we threaten them? I told Ethan and Keith to unplug Jabbering from shore power and take in the main lines as I started the engine and Jake turned on all the navigation equipment. Radar up and running, Navionics crisp and clean, weather radio on, paper charts for Block Island Sound, Narraganset Sound, and Buzzards Bay all folded neatly and on the chart table. Lars, Justin, Kyle, and Lukas arrived in the cockpit and I felt surrounded by Indians and the question is are they friendly or a war party. Jake and I are relieved to find they're a friendly bunch. Is there and echo? Everything I to say I hear again ... sometimes as much as 3 times. Ok Ethan release the bow line, ... Ok Ethan release the bow line, ... Ok Ethan release the bow line .... `Kyle' I think he heard me the first time. Everything repeated. ... ... Keith let go of the stern line and pull up the fenders, ... Keith let go of the stern line and pull up the fenders, ... Keith let go of the stern lin............ "Justin! one more word n you're shark bait" . . . . shouted Ethan .... "Ok, Bartholomew" .... .... Oh, my goodness Jake and I haven't heard Kyle or Justin call Ethan that in months and months. ... ... Bartholomew? ... Bartholomew? ... .... ..... Lukas! , shouted Ethan who was all red when he said LUKAS! a second time. Worse, much worse was Keith and his laughing. Jabbering was underway and heading down the Mystic River heading for the East End of Fisher's Island and Block Island Sound. Jake had control of 4 brats and I told Keith to set course for Cuttyhunk and the area of West End Pond on Navionics. Then told Ethan to do the same on paper charts and Jake and I will see how close the teens come to having the same course heading. Keith took not more than a minute and recommended at course heading of 079 degrees East and 51.5 miles and 8.5- or 9-hours sailing time. ... ...Wow, the kid is very sharp; now let's see what Ethan has to say. ... ... Ethan arrived in the cockpit chart #12300 in hand. . . . . "I looked at a couple of ways but considering the tide, current and wind I think it's best to sail just off the Northeast end of Block Island heading 100 degrees and for about 21 miles then change course and head for Cuttyhunk heading 068 degrees and about 32 miles ... what do you think Keith?" . . . . Ethan had come up with a good plan considering wind and current and almost the same and distance. It's just good to watch Keith and Ethan. Keith agreed with Ethan that his plan was best and perhaps best to pick up a little more wind and less chop being in slightly deeper water. I told the boys to take over while I went below to see what Jake and the rascal crew was getting into. I'm never surprised at what they may be doing. I hit the bottom of the companionway to one of the funniest sights. Each of the boys were trying on each other's Speedos and Jake was giving his honest thought of how they looked. I looked at Kyle and Justin as they pulled on a pair of Lukas's Speedos. I can only describe it this way ... `Lukas is considerably bigger than "The Twins", taller and his hips wider but, with almost a nice little 6 pack. Little athlete he is. Jake was already laughing. I looked first at Justin in these washed out gray colored Speedos then at Kyle in a pair of old off-white Speedos. I couldn't contain myself and joined Jake in laughter. "The Twins" looked like two little `old ladies' in a pair of stretched out 1 size to big panties. The fun was just beginning when Kyle and Justin began to dance and of course the Speedos slid to the deck. Keith had to step halfway down to see what was all the commotion about. Laughing he quickly returned to the cockpit to give Ethan a break to take a look too. It gets even better when Lars and Lukas squeeze into a pair of Justin and Kyle's swimsuits. Now Justin and Kyle still bring along their 1-size-to-small Speedos so that is about 3 sizes to small for either of Peter and Neil's boys. Lukas and Lars are now 11 and Lukas is about 2 inches taller than Lars but, both boys have that very nicely developed swimmer type body. I took one look at these two in those `way-to-small' Speedos. ... ... My pulse quickened and my face felt warm. To make things a little hotter that little brat Justin reached over and rubbed the front of Lars Speedo and that resulted in a very quick, nothing left to imagination, `tween' erection. Jake quickly sent all 4 `tweens' in another direction telling them to get in `proper' fitting swimsuits and to put on sunscreen. We bought 4 new nice, but inexpensive binoculars, and Jake told them we had devised a search game. ... ... Honestly, that was Jake pulling that story right out of thin air; I'm excited to learn what this new game is. ... ... Lars, Lukas, Justin, and Kyle were topside in a flash. I told Ethan and Keith about the `New' game that I didn't know anything about. They found it quite funny but, reminded me that Jake can pull a rabbit out of a hat quicker than lightning. I was standing next to Ethan, and Keith was sitting behind us on a deck cushion as Jake explained............ "Ok boys, you all have to face the bow, hold your `new' binoculars with both hands in front of your chest. ... I'm going to describe something and it may be on the port side, starboard side or it just might be off Jabbering's stern. I'll count to 3 and say `Go' then whoever spots what I describe first wins.". . . . Lars is smart and thinking fast asks . . . ."So, what do we win Jake?" I thought Lars had Jake on that one but nope Jake had 2 rolls of `Tokens' I have no idea where he got them. Then he explained that at the end of the game each of our young tyrants could exchange the tokens for dollars. Then they could spend the money at the gift store at Plymouth when we arrived. Keith was up and standing next to Ethan and asked . . . . "Hey, can I play too?" . . . . "Don't ask silly questions Keith or you'll be on galley duty for a week." was Jake's response. Keith looked so, so rejected. ... `tyrants laughing'.............. Actually, the game was brilliant! and went on till we were right out in Block Island Sound. In the game there were light houses, red and green buoys, a fire truck, a few different cars, 2 people riding bicycles and a dog, a big dog, it was a tan colored Great Dane. The 4 boys were almost even. It got better when Jake said they could play the game again when we passed through the Cape Cod Canal. For now, it was best to get life jackets on while in the open waters of the sound. While Jake was helping Kyle, Justin, Lukas, and Lars with their lifejackets I told Ethan and Keith if they spotted any sharks not to mention it to the other crew members. They both understood. Justin and Kyle both had bad dreams after seeing the shark eating on the whale. So far, the day has been perfect. Lifejackets on and Lars was first to say it ... "What's for lunch I'm starving!?" there's that echo again ... I'm starving too, me too, me three<< that was Kyle. Why are they all looking at me? ... Oh, I see Jake is pointing directly in my direction and I guess I'm elected to come up with some sort of lunch, ... hmmmm, I know Liver and Onions, and I heard ... "Yuk!" ... ... Ok! You bunch of tyrants if you help, we can have tortilla roll ups. ... Ahhhh, and now I have a galley full of sous-chefs. Lukas is chopping avocado, Lars and Justin are warming the tortillas, and Kyle is getting the chicken and cheese ready. Lunch was grand and not surprising there wasn't even a crumb remaining. Jake and I traded places with Ethan and Keith for the rest of the sail to Cuttyhunk. We anchored in a nice sheltered spot on the northeast side of Cuttyhunk and the plan was dinner and a movie or game then an early night and an early start in the morning. After our movie, an `Old Movie', Mrs. Doubtfire, it was just as good the fourth time as the first but, it was time to call it a night. Yes, getting ready to turn in included a number of `people' acting like Mrs. Doubtfire and some funny stuff. I won't go into what `funny stuff' means but, just think of 2 older teens and 4 little horny tweens who can't seem to keep their hands to themselves. Now I've said that and it is quite apparent that Jake's hormones are in high gear as well; I think that watching Ethan and Keith and their roaming hands had something to do with Jakes friendliness. ... ... I'm not complaining! ... Nope, not complaining. Going to bed was pure fun. I think I can assume that Ethan and Keith are having as much fun as Jake and...... it was the door ...why do they do this? ... who is it and what do you want? . . . . "Can we come in?" . . . . It was Ethan and Keith and Ethan sounded like there was something very wrong.......... They came in and without asking just crawled right in the middle of the bunk between Jake and me. . . . . "We felt something was wrong" ... Keith said and just about then I felt something too. It just happened to be Ethan's hand as he slipped it under the covers. About the time his hand passed my stomach I was at full attention and already quite slippery from Jake's touching things. I looked over at Jake and Keith just as Keith was turning trying to find the foot of the bunk or perhaps, he was looking for something else. Judging by the sound from Jake ... Keith had found what he was looking for. It was less than a minute and I was enjoying the same. Neither Jake or I lasted very long ... 3 minutes, ... nah, maybe 2 at the most. ... "Wow, you guys are so much fun and you'll sleep much better now." is all that Ethan and Keith said as they quietly shut the cabin door and were gone. I looked at Jake as he said . . . . "You know Kori I never even said a word and I didn't hear you say anything either." . . . . Now that I think about it, Jake's right and it happened so fast, everything happened so fast ... teens entered, there was excitement, teens exited ... yep, that's fast. Well, it was fun for a minute or two. I felt a poke in the ribs. Smelled coffee. Jake's bare butt slipping into boxers. I looked at the clock and no the alarm didn't go off. If Jake is up and I can smell coffee then I guess it's time to get this boat awake and moving. Jake was first in the salon and I was right behind. Coffee, tea, milk, OJ all on the table. Pancakes piling high on a plate and hear comes rug-rats and those other bratty kids carrying Hamburger and Hot-dog ... "Hey, those things back in the cage!" ... "but" ... Lars, No buts, cage now! .... Jake can give good directives. The disgusted look on 4 faces didn't last long when plates of pancakes smothered in strawberries and whipped cream were set in front of them. Breakfast was exceptional followed by a quick washup and then it was `all hands on deck'. Jabbering was purring like a kitten and the clanking of the anchor chain said we were underway. It was just 10:30 on a heading of 040 when we approached the entrance of the Cape Cod Canal. 4 charming brightly colored kids in their best Island Shorts and t-shirts each holding their `own' binoculars were ready for the game to commence. It was Stony Point Dike, and Cedar Point to port then Mashnee to starboard. Hog Neck, Jacobs Neck, and finally the Maritime Academy on Taylor Point and we were officially at the beginning of the canal. The Cape Cad Canal is 7 miles long and Jake and Keith sat with the 4 boy brats and told them all about the canal. The Cape Cod Canal is an artificial waterway in the U.S. state of Massachusetts connecting Cape Cod Bay in the north to Buzzards Bay in the south. It is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. The approximately seven-mile-long canal traverses the narrow neck of land joining Cape Cod to the state's mainland. All 4 boys found Buzzards Bay a funny name and narrow neck became almost a game to see who could stretch his neck and make it longest. We were instructed to pull to the Maritime Academy where we would transit the canal and accompany the El Galeón Andalucía. How amazing could this be. We were in the right place at the right time. We pulled alongside the El Galeon Andalucia a wooden reproduction of a 16th-century Spanish galleon that was part of Spain's West Indies fleet. We were invited aboard and given a tour while arrangements were made for an escort boat provided by the academy. It couldn't get any better for the boys. They found that Galleons usually had three or four masts, with the two or three forward masts being square-rigged and the aft mast being lateen-rigged. Galleons were built to be ocean-going merchant ships, carrying cargo from Europe to the Americas. OMG ... Lukas, Justin, Lars and Kyle were in heaven when the crew of the galleon told about naval wars and pirates. When captured by rival states, they were usually put into military service. However, because they were often captured by pirates in the Caribbean, galleons are today synonymous with pirate ships. Galleons were armed; El Galeón Andalucía has ten cannons. The canal transit .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jAlhPZmvgU&ab_channel=BSGT2TREKFAN88 This may be the most exciting part of our vacation. Jake and I would take Jabbering through the canal following behind the Galleon. Ethan and Keith had the pleasure of watching Justin, Kyle, Lars, and Lukas who have been invited to sail with the Tall Ship through the canal. `Find it' game will have to wait. Once through the canal Jake rolled the fenders off the port side as we pulled alongside the Andalucia. Somewhat reluctantly we allowed the 4 little, now pirate brats, to come back aboard Jabbering. Ethan and Keith said they had been very polite, well behaved, and asked great questions of the crew. Another highlight was they all have been given `gold pieces' ... pirate treasure for sure. I can only imagine what Lars and Lukas will tell Neil and Peter when they pick the boys up in Boston. We turned north to a heading of 330 degrees and headed for Plymouth about 12 miles and with good weather and wind it was only a 2-hour sail. Now Ethan has studied the Plymouth history and began the lesson for out youngins. "Ok, listen up brats ... Plymouth is a coastal town in Massachusetts, south of Boston ... and Yes, we're going to Boston. ... It's the site of the first Pilgrim settlement, founded in 1620. Plymouth Rock, a boulder in Pilgrim Memorial State Park, marks the place where settlers are thought to have landed on shore." ... Now I'm not all the sure this is accurate and neither does Jake. ... Ethan and his sidekick Keith continued the lesson ... ... "The Mayflower II, a full-scale replica of the ship that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic, is usually anchored at the park. So, behave and you might get a tour!" We made our way into Plymouth harbor and were very lucky to find an open slip for Jabbering for tonight and tomorrow night. It was now all hands to washdown decks and clean the boat. Tonight, was almost a repeat of last night. It was a pirate movie ... Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales. What an end to such a great day. ... Oh, it was the end, no `fun' tonight. Eggs, bacon and all the works and then it was off to The Plymouth Settlement for another history lesson but, this time it was in person ... at the time of the Pilgrims in period dress. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwpMKM0UAQk&ab_channel=WeNeedaVacation.com The day was exciting and we did enjoy trying some of the food that was prepared back then. We all agreed the oven baked bread was the best. This will be our last night at Plymouth then on to Boston where we will meet up with Neil, and Peter who will be collecting our Pirates Lars and Lukas. Tonight, it was out to find a pizza place and we did. Café Strega not far from the dock and Jabbering and dinner was bloody good. The wine excellent and Jake was as happy as could be. Desert was `spumoni', Italian ice cream roll. Back on Jabbering things were happening and it didn't sound good. Ethan was shouting at Lukas and Lukas was shouting at Ethan and Keith. I stepped into the salon and the two were looking at me. Lukas looked guilty and Ethan looked pissed. I asked what was going on and that got Lukas to look at Ethan with what was a very pleading look; a look that was begging Ethan not to tell. ... I just said Ok, go to bed. Lukas went into the rug-rats port cabin and closed the door. I walked forward to the forward V-birth where Ethan and Keith sleep and as I passed the rug-rats cabin I heard Lars say . . . . "He didn't let you do it ... I told you he wouldn't." ... ... I knocked softly on the forward cabin door, Ethan opened the door and I asked what was going on and what wouldn't you let Lukas do? ... ... "he wanted to join me and Keith, that's all" ... ... hmmmm, you mean he wanted to have sex with you and Keith? ... ... "Geeeeze, Kori, do you have to know everything, just let it go, it's over." Ten, eleven, seventeen ... hormones, dispositions, mood swings ... I'm glad I was never like that. Ok, I should have just gone back to my cabin with Jake. I trust Ethan so I don't know why I had to ask and now I feel guilty. Parenting isn't easy. Sometimes parenting sucks. Back in the cabin with Jake and of course he has to ask . . . . "Kori, what was all the fuss about?" . . . . Now I should know better than try to explain but, that's not me so I just decided to open my big mouth. I explained then said something stupid like ... Jake I wasn't like that when I was a kid was I? ... I'm not going to explain Jake's reaction and comment to my question! don't even ask! It was like hearing something from some far-off place ... "Kori ... Kori wake up" ... then I realized it was Ethan whispering in my ear that we needed to get Jabbering underway. Keith was in the galley starting breakfast and Ethan had already told Lars, Justin, Lukas and Kyle to get washed and dressed for the short trip to Boston. Jake turned and looked at me saying it's to early Kori to early. I helped drag him off the bunk and we both used plenty of cold water to help wake up. Stepping into the salon it was the aroma fresh coffee that hit Jake ... he was smiling. Strong tea and some bacon and I was ready for the day. The plan of the day was `let's go'! We only had about 40 miles into Boston but, going into Boston can be easy or a nightmare. The harbor sometimes is full of small craft coming and going and a ship or 6 or 7 trying to get to the major docks with cargo. SO, what should be about 7 hours can be 10 ... fingers and toes crossed. Jabbering was underway and in open water at 06:30 with a heading of 334 degrees thanks to Ethan and Jake. Keith was taking care of filling up starving kids and I was on the radio with the dockmaster in Boston for a slip. Lucky again ... we landed a slip very near the parking lot. I called Neil and Peter to give them the info and they were getting ready to leave Ashfield as soon as the horses were taken care of. I patted the ruffian crew on the head and told Keith as soon as they were filled up (bottomless pits) to get them in lifejackets and topside. I know they were ready for more `find it' games with Jake. Topside Ethan and Jake had Jabbering tight to the wind and Jabbering was cutting the water at a good 6.7 knots. Jake had the biggest grin as each of the boys, with binoculars, arrived at the top of the companionway and said . . . . "Kori have you noticed that you, Ethan, Keith and, I think even I can get up and down the companionway with almost no sound? But, Justin, Kyle, Lars, and Lukas sound much like what I think the sound of a herd of `effalants' is. < Korean/English pronunciation for elephants. Very happy Kyle and Justin didn't hear Jake say that; rug-rats are proud of their English. Ok, we are too. Jake and Keith had `minor crew' busy with `find it' mostly off our port side as we headed north to Boston. There was midmorning snacks and Jake's game ended when Lars spotted 4 dolphin/porpoise but, this was slightly strange because they looked like what are called harbor porpoise and shouldn't be here this time of year. I think Keith put something in the rug-rats and crew's breakfast because they're being so good almost makes me think they might be sick. We were ahead of schedule. Lunch was over and Boston was in sight. Ethan was looking at Windy one of our weather apps and asked . . . . "Hey Kori have you seen Jacquerie that new storm coming off the African coast ... spaghetti models are showing it really crazy?" . . . . I did see it Ethan but, I think it looks like it'll turn and swing out into the Atlantic and we'll keep heading north. An hour later and we were pulling into the dock and greeted by Peter and Neil. Lars and Lukas were so excited. This was the first time they had been away from their `dads' for more than a day. We now had even more help washing down Jabbering and the chatter was nonstop. As Jake, Ethan, Keith and I expected the biggest thing was El Galeón Andalucía, pirates and 10 canons. We rented a car and ran toward the center of Boston walked around for an hour. It always feels funny to walk on solid ground after days on a sailboat. Justin and Kyle almost looked drunk at first. Dinner was at the Tuscan Kitchen Seaport. This place is a sprawling Italian haunt serving polished dishes amid rustic-chic surrounds with outdoor seating. ... Oh, the price goes along with the description $$$$ but, Neil insisted. Dinner was over and Lars, Lukas, Neil, and Peter loaded up and we waved goodbye. I know Neil and Peter wanted to get home and it was a long drive and would be midnight or later when they arrived back in Ashfield. Jake drove and Keith, Ethan and I were being told of all the fun things the rug-rats had done on the trip so far. Back on Jabbering it was time for bed. Ethan spotted me checking `Windy' and came over and stood next to me. His hand on my shoulder ... I'm not sure if he was trying to assure me things were fine or if he was looking for me to say everything's Ok. I pointed to 3 potential storms and said that most likely they would head south of Cuba but, as always, we'll watch the weather several times a day. Then I said Keith's probably lonely. ... ... I got slapped on the butt for that as he headed forward to the v-birth cabin. Jake was already in bed and I quickly crawled in beside him. ... ... Seconds later two adorable, cute munchkins were pleading to come in. ... ... I didn't have a chance to say Ok when Jake shouted . . . . "Hurry up n get in here." ........ the door opened and those two kids sprang on the bunk and Jake and I were covered in hugs n kisses. Justin was sitting in the middle of the bed with a very serious face and said . . . . "Dads, Kyle and me we been talking bout things and could it just be us and our big brothers for the rest of the summer? No more other people, just us... Ok?" I looked at Jake and it was so obvious what he was about to say. He grabbed Justin at the same time I grabbed Kyle in a big hug and we all agreed the rest of the summer was just the six of us. Two teen boys, two rug-rats, and two getting older adults. Neither Jake or I had slept so soundly in a long time. I know I never let go of Kyle and when I woke at 6:30 Jake's arms were tightly wrapped around Justin. ... Ah-ha, I was first in the galley and it's my choice for breakfast. Eggs, bacon, hash browns, toast with `My' tea, coffee, milk and OJ. Jake smelled the coffee and was out in a flash and quickly joined by Justin and Kyle and shortly after the two teens appeared. It was nearly 10 am when Jabbering sailed out of Boston heading for Jeffreys Ledge slightly northeast of Gloucester, Mass. The weather had turned cool and the wind was strong at 15 to 18 knots. Jabbering was heeling and cutting the waves with just a slight salt splash now and then. The course was set and we wanted to make Jeffreys Ledge then head for South Portland, New Hampshire another 54 miles. The plan was to try to reach Bar Harbor, Maine in 3 days that is if the wind and sea conditions hold. It was a little cool and choppy for the boys out on deck so with everything going as good as can be it was time for games and maybe a movie. Keith, Ethan, Jake and I will take turns watching Jabbering and conditions rotating every hour and a half. We made Jeffreys Ledge in good time but the wind and chop were picking up. We were now about 17 miles north of Jeffreys Ledge and 28 miles off shore and in about 250 feet of water beneath the keel. Keith hollered down .... "It looks like a squall and we're in for some rain." .... Closed all the open hatches and sure enough the wind began whipping and the sea increasing easily to 3 meters or 9 feet. Justin and Kyle were in high spirits and at times like riding a rollercoaster. Ethan and I checked our position 4 times and each time it looked as if we were being pulled east. I checked the latest update on the Gulf Stream flow and apparently, we are on the eastern edge and fighting it. With this squall and an approaching storm, it appears we're being pulled further out to sea.......
