The story is told by Jake Roberts A Neglected Boy "The Twins" XCIII jacoblion@tutanota.com Here we are standing on the back porch with Peter and Neil looking at this big, really Big Black Bear just hanging out lounging around on a limb about halfway up this tree. When he heard the not-so `quiet' whispers of some our crew he opened his eyes slowly but didn't seem to pay much attention to us. Peter and Neil had the video camera running and now 8 other cameras of various sizes were clicking away. I think Justin, and Keith were trying to outdo each other for the best shot. With all the not so quiet whispers, and clicking of cameras, "Sugar", the bear now named by several little monsters, decided to get up and move around in the tree and give the cameras a better and more personal look at his/her face. Oh, `what big eyes you have Sugar'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7PSwmOkp7E&ab_channel=LarryW.Brown Now when that Big Black Bear had turned itself around its head looked a lot closer. Now we all see "what big eyes, what big nose, and what big Teeth" it has. Lars, Kyle, Justin, and Lukas took a step back from the railing. When "Sugar" yawned the boys decided to take a few more steps back. Lars looked at Neil and said . . . . "Papa, did you see the size of his teeth?" ... no need to answer that ... ... we all saw the size of his teeth. The yawn was over and now that `Bear' was wide awake. ... He was looking `directly' at what was looking `directly' at him ... ... The Whippets. ... Uh-oh ... Penny and Silence backed up along with Kyle and Justin. ... ... Ok, time to move around to the front porch while Neil and Peter persuaded the bear to take a hike. Justin and Kyle had grabbed onto Antonio and Kris's hands and were pulling them around to the front porch and showing them to the best seats. I had to laugh a little because they were also the seats between Ethan and Keith ... Kori looked at me and said . . . . "Double protection from the `big bad wolf" ... ... The whippets weren't to be left out and just crawled right up on that long porch sofa half on cushions and half on laps. I think everyone jumped when we heard 4 loud bursts from the shotguns. Neil and Peter soon appeared with good news ... "Sugar" had decided to run off to find a less noisy place. Ethan and Keith helped Peter make some drinks for everyone and Neil started the grill for burgers. Neil was at the grill brushing the grates and wiping some vegetable oil on them when Justin and Kyle walked over and asked............ ............"Uncle Neil when are you gonna call that Warden guy?" . . . . Neil looked at Kyle and Justin . . . . "What are you talking about? ... ... "Uncle Neil you know that guy you said you were gonna call about the Bear, the guy that was here last year with the big drum trap thing ... that guy."...... Neil had the rug-rats trapped and he said . . . . "Wait ... you guys said not to call the Game Warden, you were all upset ... right? . . . . Justin was about to use the `kid excuse' and said ... "Uncle Neil, we're just kids n that Bear gots to go, just don't hurt it just take him somewhere nice like California, Ok?" ... Kyle had a much better idea and said to give him to the National Geographic Zoo. hmmm, interesting I didn't know Nat. Geo had a zoo. Things settled down when Neil agreed it might be best to call that Warden Guy with the `big trap thing'; who would have thought that would bring a smile to Justin and Kyle. Things really got much better when those big burgers and country sausages came off the grill and landed on the table. Kyle and Justin were looking at the platter of meat and counting the burgers and sausages. ... ... "Uncle Neil there are 16 burgers but I counted us and we're only 12. ... Does Lars and Lukas get 2 burgers n you and Uncle Peter cause maybe Lars n Lukas can't eat 2?" ... The rug-rats were playing foxy and the rest of us knew just where this was going. Neil hugged Justin and told him he forgot to count Silence, Penny, and Sally, their Great Dane, and she gets 2 burgers and sausage. Then we all heard from Lars and Lukas how `Sally' always gets a burger when they have a cookout. It's always a treat to see just how big those two rug-rats can smile. `Uncle' Neil and Peter were treated to hugs ... no little peck on the cheek though. Dinner was over and the finish was strawberry shortcake. Antonio got my attention and pointed at Kyle. He was counting the number of dessert dishes and just as he was about to tell Neil there were only 12 ... Neil handed Kyle and Justin some dog biscuits `not' with strawberries either. We said thanks for the wonderful dinner and reminded Lars and Lukas that the lady from the pony club would be at the farm at 10 am `sharp' to start jumping lessons. Now Lars had a great idea. If they came for breakfast or even better just come up with us now then they would be on time. Kori thought fast and said YES! ... great idea Lars. Kori's not tired? ... Nope he is not tired ... Kori's smiling and I already know that smile and with Lars and Lukas having a sleepover with Justin and Kyle then...... Well, I don't have to explain his thinking, do I?........ Let's see ... Lars and Lukas with us means Neil and Peter get the night to themselves, Lars and Lukas with Justin and Kyle will mean Kori and I get the night to ourselves, Oh Yes. ... ... Then there are Antonio, Kris, Ethan, and Keith and I'm sure they can find something exciting to do. For some reason, the walk from Neil and Peters up through the pastures and barn chores was about the fastest I have ever seen. There were a lot of high fives, laughs, and some little twerps doing a lot of giggling. ........... OMG... holy sh-t no one was watching the Whippets................... .....................Out of sight out of mind ... everyone was thinking of the excitement and fun we would have after the lights went out. The Whippets in the meantime had already found their fun ... yes, yes ... a nice fresh, still warm very soft, pile of horse poop. Justin and Kyle were not happy! Neither were Kori and I. ... Others found the situation amusing. I looked at Ethan and he looked at me ... "Forget it Jake" not Dad ... just Jake and the 4 teens were gone. Kori said .... "Good thing that tub/shower combination we had Neil put in is big enough for 4 kids and 2 dogs." ... ... I guess Kori is right about that and it does get plenty of use. Now the tub was filled with 4 naked boys and 2 happy Whippets. We cautioned the boys to be extra careful that the dogs didn't scratch or step on `things' and that caused some chuckles from all 4 of the brats. They had been in the tub for a little more than a half-hour when I went in to check on them. ... Oh, I should have waited a little longer............ ............Seems the boys had done a great job of washing 2 dogs and then dried them and let Silence and Penny have 4 big bath towels and they looked clean and happy all curled up and sound asleep. The boys were not asleep nor were they washing ... well, they were washing some `things' and I think you call it "you show me yours; I'll show you mine". It didn't bother them at all that I was in the room and Lars pulled the curtain back and even asked me who had the longest and who was bigger. Immediately an argument. Lars says he is longer and Lukas is thicker and Kyle is requesting a ruler; then they all agreed and begged me to get a ruler. Ok, Justin and Kyle are 10 and 6 months and Lars and Lukas are 11 and almost 3 months ... counting months is very important at this age. Out to the den, open the top-drawer of the desk, fetch ruler and return to the master bath to 4 awaiting erect `things'. I handed the ruler to Lars who pushed it back at me and said . . . . "Uncle Jake you gotta measure so there's no cheating and do you measure from the top or under and do we pull the hood back or does it count because mine isn't as long as Lukas." This is serious business. Every so often they all have to give a few strokes to keep everything at maximum length. So, it's measure from the top with `hood' pulled back. All 4 boys are standing proudly side by side ... "me first" ... no ... "me first" as one then the other pushed their little .......... Whippets escaped and I handed Lars the ruler and dashed out after Penny and Silence. I was laughing as walked into the kitchen to find Ethan, Keith, Kori, Antonio, and Kris all wanting to know the results. ... ... Ha-ha, I didn't know but did say how cute they were and I thought Justin and Kyle are doing just fine in that department. Minutes later 4 charming brats appeared with the figures............ ............Kris said . . . . "Hurry twerps who's biggest?" ... now there was some laughing when Kyle said they should let Kris measure because he and Antonio do it all the time. ... And the results - - - Lukas is 3.5 inches or 9cm and Lars is just 3mm shorter. Justin and Kyle are exactly the same at 2.6 inches or 6.7cm and they both like the sound of 6.7cm better than 2.6 inches. Then someone, not mentioning anyone's name, said they all had a long way to go to get to be as big as Ethan. Now 4 tweens are looking at the 4 teens and Lars is holding the ruler and slapping his hand with it ... the devil was in his eyes. Kori reminded Kyle and Justin to take Silence and Penny out, then time for bed and sleep not just bed but sleep. Lars and Lukas had big smiles and were humming as if to say "oh yes go to bed and go to sleep, no fun or anything". All 4 boys and 2 Whippets out the back door and 5 minutes later back in the back door and a race down the hall to the rug-rats bedroom. I was turning out the lights in the living room when Lukas trotted out of the rug-rats bedroom. Three steps later into Ethan and Keith's bedroom and right back out and back into the rug-rats bedroom. I didn't miss that he had something in his hand. ... ... I can't say I am 100% positive but, it did look like Oral-delight-gel. Kori and I aren't naïve and know that Justin, Kyle, Lukas, and Lars at this age are going to try stuff. I would be more concerned if they didn't. Now the house is quiet and I think the shower is calling ... yes, I'm sure of it. It wasn't a long shower ... well, that was till Kris wandered in. He said it was important and needed to talk; he was saying that as he slid back the curtain and stepped right between Kori and me. From what Kris was saying Keith, Antonio and Ethan were playing some kind of game and he was feeling left out. I didn't hear Kori complain and for sure I didn't. I felt bad for Kris and so did Kori. We soaped up a sea sponge and began to give the poor boy a little attention. From his reaction to our attention, it definitely became obvious that Kris was enjoying every little touch and nothing was missed. I was thinking about that ruler but it really wasn't important. Kori turned the shower from a medium spray to a mist and `things' quickly turned hot. From previous adventures with Kris and Antonio, we have learned he is no amateur and tonight simply reinforced what we remembered. Kris showed us a few new moves he and Antonio have learned. I want to know where he learns this stuff. The shower was over and it was off to bed. Kori and I in our bed and Kris rejoined those other teens. Knowing what the plans were for the morning I hope they all have a good night's sleep; it is going to be a busy day! 6:40 ! Seriously, who was the brat that opened the door and let the crazy Whippets in? I guess Penny and Silence somehow opened the bedroom door and came sailing through the air landing on Kori and me. They were all excited and wound-up and did that sliding under the covers flipflop thing then poked their noses out from under covers. Oh, is that bacon? The bedroom door was left open about 12 inches by some brat or brats and that wonderful smell of bacon and amaretto coffee was riding on the air currents right to our bed. Kori was wide awake and tossed back the covers and as he and I hit the floor so did the dogs. The Whippets made a mad dash for the kitchen while Kori and I made tracks for the bathroom .... Ahhhh, pee. I feel better and hungry too. Kori was just about to walk from the bedroom when he turned to me and said ... "I don't know if I could make it without hearing their laughter." ... He turned quickly and I had no time to reply but was left thinking about what Kori had said. He and I love the boys, all the boys, but how we show it outwardly is different. Maybe I don't know Kori as well as I think I do. A few steps from the bedroom and across the hall that leads to the backdoor and we were in the kitchen. The kitchen most of the time is a place of happiness, foolishness, lots of laughter and this morning, despite the time, was a morning of laughter and giggling. I don't want to know what some of the giggling was about, but I can imagine. I was watching Kori when he grabbed Kyle and Justin and hugged them. He hugs them a lot but not like this and I was right next to him when I heard him say . . . . "I love `you two' so much" . . . . he gave both boys a kiss and that got a reaction from both of them .... "Yuk ! ... Dad, why you gots to do that in front of everyone?" It wasn't even noticed by anyone and Keith was shoving a cup of tea in his hand and I was grabbing for a cup of coffee, good coffee ... Ethan makes good coffee. I thought about what he just said to the boys ... it was the way he said it ... there was so much more behind the words. Something was different with Kori............ Waffles and bacon, laughs and private jokes, and Ethan and Keith were out the door and, on their way to work. Kris and Antonio did dishes and Lukas, Lars, Kyle and Justin took care of Penny and Silence and then changed for riding lessons ... Oh, sorry I was just informed that it is `jumping' lessons; they already know how to ride, is what Lars said. Everything finished in the house and yes, Whippets in crates and Kori and I with the boys were on the way to get horses saddled. Right on time, the lady from the pony club arrived. ... ... Oh, she was so surprised with how nice the jump course looked and then had us take everything down and move it to the far corners all but the 2 low green jumps with side wings. The 2 jumps were placed at the center of the course and close to the fence. Now the surprise for Justin, Kyle, Antonio, Lars, Kris, Lukas. The horses could be left with saddles but remove the bridle and put on a halter. Kori and I knew what was coming ... the boys didn't. The lady said . . . . "Ok, boys set the 3 rails to the bottom so that the top rail is 14 inches to the very top and `no more'!" ... It was the way she said it ... the tone of her voice. Already there were complaining looks but nothing out loud. Then the lady continued . . . . "Ok, boy with the `curly hair' you first" ... ... "My name's Kris" ... ... Ok, Kris with the curly hair you're going to trot and lead your horse around to the jump and you can't stop or hesitate you must show the horse what is expected ... understand, don't stop you jump and horse will jump too." ... ... ... I got a look from Antonio like .. `is this lady a little slow or does she think we're slow?' Kori and I have to turn around and have all we can do not to bust out laughing. ... ... It got worse, much worse, when she looked at Antonio and said . . . . "Ok, you with the silly grin you're next ... let's go trot...." ... and that was it.... Lukas and Lars started with giddy-up Antonio. ... ... Oh, that did not go over well with that Lady, nope not at all. I think a good description would be she reminded Kori and me of a 6-foot prison guard at a maximum-security prison; it might be that crop she kept slapping against her leg in those leather boots. ... ... The morning progressed and the boys did well and there were laughs as each boy jumped over the 14-inch rail followed by their horse, most of the time. It was noon and the show, I mean lesson, was over and she did tell all the boys how good they had done and it would be the same time tomorrow. Each of the boys did smile as she learned their names. When the `nice' lady drove off Kori and I heard Lukas shout . . . . "Hey, boy with the curly hair `trot'!" We all cracked up even Kris. ... ... Time for lunch and thankfully we spotted Ethan and Keith on their way up from Peter's workshop. How absolutely rude of some of these boys to be shouting to Keith and Ethan to hurry up they're hungry and don't want `plain ol sandwiches'. In addition, my feelings are hurt because I know they were talking about my sandwiches. Ham and cheese is ham and cheese but, Keith can make ham and cheese better than me, geeeeze it's the same ham and the same cheese. How many times does Kori need to ask that hands need to be washed and the Whippets need to go out? ... ... I counted 5 times. Today it is gourmet `Ham n cheese' sandwiches with sliced ripe tomatoes, and lettuce and the secret ingredient is Keith's famous Miracle Whip and mustard spread, then lightly buttered and on the grill. So.......... Ok, ok so when Keith and Ethan make it ... it is better. When I make it all those brats are telling me they're hungry and starving and when Ethan and Keith are making lunch all those same brats are nice and quiet and polite. They don't even have to be asked to help set the table, or get the chips, or pour the drinks ... no they just do it with smiles. All is quiet because mouths are full. Ethan and Keith had a little surprise and picked up their tablets and showed us pics of the work they help Peter and Neil with. Kori had to laugh when Keith said that is was mostly Peter doing the work. We had seen much of the carvings Peter makes when we were in Valberg at their studio. Antonio and Kris had never seen Peters work and were impressed with everything. I love the water and wine glasses. Lunch over and Kori and I agreed to clean the kitchen while the boys all went for a ride ........ "and take the dogs with you" shouted Kori as they all marched through the backdoor with their one-track minds. The door opened briefly to let the dogs out; sometimes I think they have the memory of a gnat. About 10 minutes later the dishes were done and I was cleaning the counter and Kori had disappeared to work on something in the den. The backdoor opened again and I was about to say make it quick and go back with the rest of the boys' when Neil walked in. I know Neil, we grew up together and I could tell he had something on his mind. Neil asked if I had time for a walk. I turned to get Kori when Neil said ... "Jake, how about just us?" ... it was right then that I knew it was something serious. We walked out of the backyard and along the fence adjoining the new property he and Peter had bought and then he began . . . . "Jake, Ethan and Keith have talked to Peter and me about Jabbering and Kori." ............ ............I was and wasn't surprised that Ethan and Keith would talk to Neil and Peter and what Neil was about to tell me wasn't a surprise either as he said . . . . "We were on our morning break with them and Keith wasn't' saying a word but I spotted a tear running down his cheek; Ethan said they were worried about Kori and that you seem to be doing better and giving more hugs than you used to." I didn't realize I was hugging the boys more ... but, now that Neil told me what Ethan said I guess I am and I know why. ... ... Neil continued ... "Jake it worries me that Keith said that Kori has been less affectionate toward he and Ethan and they know it's because he's having trouble with what happened." I was getting upset as Neil continued . . . . "On the second day in the raft Keith thought there would be no rescue and that this would be how things would end ... fortunately you were rescued. He and Ethan talk about the storm and what may have hit jabbering so hard as to cause the large gaping hole. They said that when they talk about that night it helps them to feel better, at least for a little while. It's after dark when the storm replays over and over" .......... As difficult as it was to listen to what Neil was saying it also was the reality of what each of us are facing in our own way each day. Neil continued . . . . "Keith and Ethan love you and Kori so much and I'm sure you already know that. You know Jake, those two boys are very smart and think that Kori is blaming himself for what happened and for some reason is pushing them away. I just thought you should know Jake; Peter and I have seen a difference in Kori too. As for Ethan and Keith, I guess you already know how much they love each other, right?" We were on the way back when Neil said . . . . "Jake, maybe I shouldn't say this but, Ethan loves Kori ... you know that, right? ... not as a parent, or a brother ... I mean he loves Kori." ... I just smiled and we walked to the gate. Yes, I did know and I also know that Kori loves Ethan and I also know they are so much alike in so many ways. Neil said he needed to get back to Peter and the shop. Just as I was about to open the gate, we heard shouting, hollering and a lot of commotion from over at the barn and paddock. Neil and I started running to see what was causing the ruckus. We rounded the corner of the house and stopped halfway to the fence to our new hunter/jumper course. There is no way this is happening. Neil already had his iPhone out and taking pictures and video. All the jumps had been moved and arranged along the far side fence. Three of the jumps with side wings had been set to form a `Jail' ... that's right a `Jail' and in the middle sitting on a hay bale were Ethan and Keith. On one fence post, we spotted Anthony, and on another post, Kris and both tied securely with rope from the shed. Kyle, Lars, and Lukas on Peter Pan, Autumn, and Bolt were riding wildly up and down the full length of the large paddock shooting at Justin, the sheriff, who had a broomstick rifle and was shooting back. Keith and Ethan were screaming for help and sounded like a pair of old ladies. I was about to pee my pants. Neil looked at me and said . . . . "I thought you said kids don't have any imagination these days !" ... ... We turned just in time to see Kori arriving with his camera. It was nice to see him laughing at the shenanigans being carried on by our bunch of wild Indians. Things did calm down for a bit, that is till Keith and Ethan helped the crew reset 2 jumps. Now we were in for a show. Yep, horses saddled halters off and bridles on. ... ... The `nice' lady with the leather boots and crop, that liked to slap her leg with a riding crop, said Not To Do This ... but, they did anyway. (reminds me of something someone said about rules being made to be broken and I had a vision of that `Nice Lady).... Boys and horses all lined up at the far end of the jumping course. They're not supposed to do this. Kris was first and each delinquent followed. Down the left side and over the first jump around and down the right side and over the second jump. ... ... Kori's camera taking video and to be honest they all looked good, we applauded ... and the boys were happy. Ut-oh ... ... HEY! ... Ethan not a good idea! ... ... Kori tried to tell them the `nice lady' said not to do this. Now those words went in one ear and right out the other. The height of the top rail was raised to 24 inches. Antonio first followed by each boy ... ... Hmmmm, they look good. Reset the top rail to 36 inches ... no, no, no I was thinking accident waiting to happen............. Kris was first.... Down the left side and approaching the jump he let the horse have its head and right at the jump it made a sharp turn to the right almost dumping Kris. There were lots of laughs. Kris came around and said it was his fault he wasn't ready and DaVinci knew it. Lukas was ready ... "Dad, hey Dad watch I can do it remember in Valberg we jumped this and even higher." ... Neil looked nervous but shouted back ... "Go for it". Lukas clicked his heels into Bolt at the corner of the left side and Bolt shifted into a slow canter and then slightly faster approaching the jump. We could see Lukas lean slightly forward and right at the jump............ Bolt hit the brakes............ abrupt STOP! ... ... That is the horse came to an abrupt stop ... Lukas didn't. Shock ... gasps ... Lukas did a complete somersault right over that jump. Applause, cheers and laughter. Fortunately, he was fine. I can bet he would have rather landed on his feet than his butt. That was the end of the show. Neil told his boys ... "No More of That!" ... I have to smile the way he says things... with real authority. Now it was put everything back to where it needed to be for the morning. We or should I say the boys would not want to disappoint the `nice lady' with the leather boots and riding crop. I think a good grooming for all the horses is what is needed. As Neil was about to head home, he said he needed to talk to Henry, Antonio's grandfather, about the plans for starting the summer camp. "Summer camp" not missed by any of the crew ... hearing is good today and the rug-rats snapped their little heads around and gave Neil a big smile. Tonight, was pizza night and Ethan and Keith along with Antonio and Kris will run up to Elmer's store for 3 large `everything' pizzas. With the horses groomed it was either video games or a movie before dinner and then came the 2 boys who `never forget' anything saying they just heard the horny owl and wanted to go find it. Kori was quick to say ... ... "Great idea, let's see if we can find that horny old owl." ... ... now Justin and Kyle were excited and I was just relieved to see Kori wanting to lead the adventure. I think the afternoon antics has his mind off `other things' We, including our sighthounds, headed south over the sprawling meadows that are now the proposed location and property of the summer camp. We did talk about that and Kori and I have agreed to join Neil and Peter with the project. One really great thing is that Liam will also be involved as one of the support staff. The conversation downloaded into the brains of 2 rug-rats, you know the ones that have selective hearing, and have now decided that the location is perfect and it should be built to look like an Old West Town. ... ... Kori and I looked at them and asked . . . . "Hey, where did you guys come up with this stuff and since when did you start liking cowboy stuff?" . . . . Geeeeze, how do Kori and miss so much with these kids? It appears that some of their comic books are about Chinese Westerns ... Chinese Westerns? ... really ... Oh, I would never have thought that. Now they also have been watching cowboy movies with Ethan, Keith, Lars, n Lukas. Kori and I have been missing a lot of `stuff'. We must have walked more than a mile and never found the `horny owl'. We did hear it. First, it was from the south, then the east ... no it sounded like it was from the north ... well, we never did find it. We arrived back home to find the whole gang. Our boys along with Neil, Peter, Lars, and Lukas, who was having a slight limp and wanted a pillow to sit on. The funny thing was that Ethan and our teens had run into them at Elmer's when they were picking up their pizzas. Dinner conversation started out with the jumping and then Neil said something to Antonio about calling his grandfather to talk about the summer camp. ... ... Rug-rats got right into the conversation with their idea of it looking like an "Old West Town" with a Saloon and everything. I was about to say maybe that wasn't what `Uncle' Neil and Peter had in mind when Neil said ... ... "hmmmm, you know boys that might be a great idea for the camp. ... We can have cabins built to look like an Old West Town and for the dining room the `Saloon'. That started Lars, Kris, Lukas, and Antonio and all their ideas. ... The conversation did stop when Kyle wanted to know who would be the sheriff and what kind of gun would he have? ... "Poof" and little imaginary characters of Kyle with a `Gun' began floating around my head. Cookies and ice cream for dessert, then the whole gang settled down in the living room for a movie not, Nat Geo, nope a movie called Rango. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9dKa4C2lMY&ab_channel=Creep Popcorn, cold drinks and so much laughter. Neil, Peter and, his boys were off to their Log Home. Antonio, Kris and, our teens were pretending to go to their (separate) bedrooms. ... Ha! ... Like Kori and I didn't know why they had that `King' size inflatable mattress in the music room. I was counting on some alone time with Kori, I was counting on that. However, the rug-rats and Whippets had other ideas. This time Justin and Kyle's idea was better ... what could possibly be better than 2 rug-rats and 2 Whippets right in the middle of our bed? ... Geeeeze ...Open the window who farted? ... "It was the dog Dad" ... yeah Kyle, blame it on the dog. ... shut up Justin...... If you want the story to continue then you need to send comments.
