However underneath this confidence was a childlike sense of fun that was so addictive that it had me hooked already. I took my glass and emptied it again now feeling the effects of having drunk several glasses with out much to eat during the day. "Are you ok Doc?" asked Dylan smiling broadly, his dimples showing and his blue eyes sparkling. "I'm fine Dylan although I really shouldn't have drunk so much, I've not eaten much during the day and I have to drive home later" I replied now feeling tired. "Well that's no good is it Dan?" Jane jumped in, "We have this second bottle to finish" She stood in the kitchen doorway wiggling the bottle. "Ok well I'll pace myself and I will make sure I call a cab later." "Coooooool" Dylan squealed as he beamed at the thought of me staying longer. "Shall we go and sit in the lounge" Jane asked picking two fresh glasses from the cupboard. "Yeah these Kitchen chairs are so uncomfy" Dylan commented rubbing his cute ass. "My butts all numb now." The wine had loosened my tongue and I had to check myself as I started to say that I could wake it up for him. The three of us sat down, Jane taking a single chair and Dylan jumping down next to me on a two seat couch. "How are you grazes now Dylan?" I asked turning to face the bubbling teenager sat next to me. "There still sore Doc, but you took real good care of me earlier, thanks" he replied throwing his arms around me again and hugging me. From the corner of my eye I could see Jane Henderson looking at him and rolling her eyes. I really didn't know what to make of this situation, Jane had acknowledged the fact that her son was gay and had also gone as far as admitting that it was obvious he had an enormous crush on me but she hadn't done anything to try and stop Dylan from being tactile. "Whoa way to go there buddy, there's nothing wrong with the strength in your arms is there?" I said feigning injury to my chest. "Hahah sorry Doc, I didn't realize how strong I was" Dylan replied chuckling. Jane got up and opened the second bottle of wine, this one a screw top, and poured me a large glass. "So how long have you both lived here" I asked taking a large swig of my wine and trying to divert attention from the fact that Dylan was snuggling up closer to me on the couch. "Well, we've lived here for 10 years, Dylan's Dad and I moved here from Boston when Dylan was 6 years old because of Jeff's work" Jane started and I cursed myself for forgetting about Dylan's Dad being dead. "We found this house and fell in love with it. It has a lot of happy memories for us." Jane continued. "I am so sorry, I should have been more thoughtful I didn't mean to bring up painful memories" I said wanting the couch to open up and swallow me. "No Dan its fine it helps to talk about it. Dylan's Dad was a Special Agent in Charge for the FBI field office here. The youngest they'd ever had. He was only 30 when he was promoted and moved , he was fantastic at his job and he loved it, but he spent a lot of time away from the home and as such wasn't really there for Dylan as he grew up. When Dylan came out to us as gay, he was only 14 and Jeff struggled to come to terms with it. He couldn't accept that Dylan was different and hated the fact that he would be stereotyped and discriminated against by hateful bigots. But most of all he didn't want to face up to the very masculine world he worked in and admit to his colleagues that his son was gay. Please don't get me wrong, Jeff loved Dylan with his whole body and soul, but he couldn't get past his struggles. This caused many an argument and I was hard on him for not accepting his son for what he was. This obviously caused a rift between Dylan and his father that only grew wider with time. I was always hopeful that they would reconcile but that hope was ripped from me in February of this year when Jeff was gunned down during the arrest of a suspect." Jane's eyes began to tear up and she was trying hard to fight the emotion. Dylan like the loving son he was left the couch next to me and snuggled up next to his mom on the single seat and cuddled her furiously. I felt like a complete bastard for raising the subject so blindly and it was obvious from my face that I felt bad. I took my glass and drained it, filling it straight back up. "Dan, please don't feel bad, its fine just sometimes I get a little overwhelmed" Jane said trying to make me feel better, although it didn't. "Jane, I am not surprised it's been just over 6 months since your husband died, it must be just the toughest time for you both" I said apologetically feeling worse by the second. I'd seen lots of gunshot wounds come through my ER and I knew how horrific they could be. I started trawling through my memory of all those I'd had to deal with in my short time at the hospital and I suddenly started to get a cold chill creep up my spine. I remembered this specific case; an FBI Agent shot point blank range with a shotgun; he was wearing a vest that had been annihilated by the force of the shot. I remembered this case because I had been one of the assisting Doctors desperately trying to saving the agents life. Sadly, I remembered, we worked hard for two hours but there was nothing we could do. I could now taste and smell the ER and hear the voices of the Doctors and Nurses shouting out his stats and putting lines in, cutting off clothes and pumping chests. I remembered his injuries where some of the worst the ER had seen and even the Senior Doctors were stunned. I drifted off into a day dream of the day until I was brought back to earth by the sound of Dylan's voice. "Doc, Doc, you ok, you've gone really pale?" "Sorry Dylan, I was in a place I didn't want to be, but don't worry I'm fine" Jane looked at me closely, a quizzical but almost knowing look on her face. She picked up the wine bottle and poured herself another glass. "God I gotta pee" said Dylan breaking the atmosphere as he ran off to the bathroom. "You were there weren't you?" Jane stated more in fact than as a question which caught me completely by surprise. "That's where you drifted off to wasn't it?" I didn't know what to say, I had no where to go and felt that I owed this woman some honesty at least. "Yes I was there; I was one of the Doctors who worked on your husband. I'm so sorry we couldn't save him, we tried so hard not to lose him" I replied looking down at the floor really feeling bad. At that point Dylan rushed in and jumped on the sofa next to me. Just his presence in the room lifted not only me but Jane also. Dylan could sense there was something going on. "What just happened?" he asked worriedly. "Well Dylan, I brought up the subject of how much you like to play Singstar on your PS3 and that kind of killed the evening" Jane said. "Yeeaaahhh Singstar!!" Dylan shouted. "We have to play that now. Please Mom. Please Dan?" That was the first time I could remember Dylan calling me by my name and it sent a little shiver down my spine. "What do you say Dan?" Jane asked me with a little wink. "Oh I don't know, I am a dreadful singer" I replied honestly. "But go on then it should be fun" Dylan squealed with delight as he ran over to set up his PS3. For the next two hours we sang and Jane and I finished off the last bottle of wine. Dylan was a great little singer and I laughed every time I saw him shake his little ass in my direction as he roared his way through, Madonna, Lady Gaga and even some Adele. Dylan however saved his best for last asking me to sing with him the classic Sonny & Cher duet, "I've Got You Babe." I remonstrated with Dylan until Jane had told me to stop being such a spoil sport and to get up and sing with her son. Dylan danced round like some Burlesque dance queen pointing his finger at me every time he got to the "I've got you babe" and I could see Jane was smiling happily as she watched her son taunt me. The song finished and Jane clapped. I fell down on to the couch laughing so hard I thought I might stop breathing. I was feeling happy and rather drunk having solely consumed nearly two bottles of wine. "I should be calling a cab I guess." I said pulling my mobile from my trouser pocket. "Awww Dan do you have to go we're having so much fun" Dylan pleaded, looking at me with his puppy dog eyes. "I'm sorry Dylan I really should be getting back, its getting late" I said really not wanting to go. "Mom, can't Dan have the spare room tonight?" Dylan asked putting his Mom dreadfully on the spot. Jane however took it in her stride, "Dan your welcome to stay, the rooms always made up and it does seem a shame for us to break up a good night so early." "Pllleeeeeeeaaaaaasssssseeeee Dan." Dylan whimpered looking through me and into my soul. I couldn't say no to him. "Ok, if it's no trouble Jane? Honestly I can grab a cab no issue?" "Don't be silly, the night's still young and Dylan is having a great time with you here." "YESSSSSSSS!!!!" Dylan shouted punching the air like he'd just won the lottery. "Ok, Calm down Dylan" Jane said sarcastically. "It's not the first time you've had a friend stay over!" Dylan just smiled and went bright red.
