"Hey Doc, I am Officer Dave Sharp, I am the investigating officer for the incident with the young kid who came in here earlier, and I was hoping to speak to his Mom and or next of kin" the officer replied. "Dylan's Mom is in the relative's room officer, but she's very shaken at the moment, her son is in surgery now with some very serious injuries. Let me see if she feels up to talking to you." "Thanks Doc I appreciate your help." I walked back to the room and before I opened the door Cassie came running over to me. "Dan" she whispered, "I just heard from the theatres, Dylan seems to be doing well up there, just thought I would let you know." Cassie again gave me a quick hug before rushing back to the queue of people at the reception. Although I knew she meant well I knew that Dylan doing well so far wasn't any indication as to how it would turn out in the end. Surgery can change in a second. I opened the door to the room and walked in. "Jane, there is a cop outside, he'd like to talk to you about what happened to Dylan, but only if you're up to it." I felt immensely protective of Jane and wanted to make sure she wasn't exposed to any unnecessary stress. "Sure Dan, the sooner I find out what happened to Dylan the better." I nodded "Ok Jane I'll go get him, his name is Officer Sharp." I understood her point completely; I wanted to know what had happened to Dylan just as badly as she did. I looked through the open door, "Officer Sharp, Mrs. Henderson feels up to talking to you, please come in." Officer Sharp walked over to the door "Thanks Doc" he said as he walked in. Officer Sharp was a large man around 6ft 4 inches in his late twenties, with what I would describe as an athletic build. His brown hair was contrasted by his sharp blue eyes and pale skin. His face however showed a face of compassion and kindness. "Mrs. Henderson my name is Dave Sharp; I am the lead investigator for this accident, thank you for seeing me at such a difficult time." "Oh Mr. Sharp I just want to know what happened to my boy and how he ended up in hospital" "Mrs. Henderson that is what I am here to find out and rest assured I will not stop until I know the facts and we have who did this." I looked at the officer, sharply turning my head from looking at Jane. "What do you mean you won't stop until you have who did this, don't you already have them?" I spluttered the incredulity clear in my voice. "I'm afraid not Doc, this was a hit and run incident and because it's been snowing we can tell from the tracks left in the snow that it was almost certainly deliberate." I shook my head struggling to understand what I was being told. "Sorry, are you saying that someone deliberately ran Dylan over and then drove away?" "It looks that way Doc, but please I really need to be talking to Mrs. Henderson, she is after all the boys' Mother" I could feel the heat and fury rising through my body, quickly making its way from my toes to my face. "And I'm his boyfriend God Dammit" I yelled at the officer with a venom in my voice that I had never heard before. The room fell silent as I slumped down on the chair, all my furious energy expelled in that one outburst. I put my hands up to my face as I felt the tears starting to flow again, trying hard to keep what control and dignity I had left. "I'm sorry officer" I heard Jane say, "As you can see it is a very difficult time for both of us. Please continue and maybe start from the beginning as we are both extremely confused." "Yes ma'am", the officer replied, "I'm sure as didn't mean to offend or upset anybody." "No offense taken officer, Dan and I just want to understand what happened to Dylan." "Ok let's start from the beginning of what I know. At around 11am a 911 call was received saying that a boy had been hit by a car on Duncan Street and the car had failed to stop. I got to the scene at around 11:10am, a couple of minutes after the Paramedics arrived. I spoke briefly with the Paramedics to get an understanding of the situation, they obviously told me it was serious and possibly life threatening so I made a call to get more units and started to close off the street. I walked from where Dylan was lying tracking the tyre marks in the snow and saw that there had been no deviation of the tyres. You see when someone hits ice or snow and is heading towards another person or an object the natural instinct is to steer the car away from the imminent collision. Steering away would have increased the face of the tyre exposed to the snow and the track in the snow would have been much wider. Additionally to that I saw no signs of braking or sliding. The conclusion being it was either deliberate or the individual had been unconscious or asleep at the time of the collision and the noise of the collision had woken them up and they fled. We have a brief description of the car but not of the driver sadly." I listened intently to Officer Sharp's brief description of the events that led to Dylan's accident, not that I could call it an accident anymore, and my head was full of questions. "What was Dylan doing on Duncan Street, that's five blocks from my place and going in completely the opposite direction of your house?" I said looking at Jane. "Why didn't he call you to pick him up if he wanted to go home? I don't understand, it doesn't make any sense." I had a thousand thoughts whizzing around my head and couldn't make sense of any of them. Jane looked at me blankly. "Does Dylan own a cell phone by any chance?" asked Officer Sharp, his strong authoritative voice breaking me out of my mind tornado. "Yes he does, he has an iPhone in a rainbow case" I replied. "Ok do you know when he last had it as it wasn't found at the scene?" "Officer Sharp, Dylan went nowhere without his phone, so if he was outside the phone would have been with him" Jane said stepping in to the conversation. "I know one way of finding out if he had his phone with him", I pulled my phone from my pocket and unlocked it. As the screen came to life the picture of Dylan that I had been showing Cassie came enveloped the screen. I smiled briefly and stroked his face on the picture. With a heavy heart I clicked the picture off and went to my text messages. "See Dylan sent me a text at 10:25am and then at 10:50am, he walked from my house to Duncan Street which is five blocks, in this snow that's going to take at least 20 - 25 minutes and he was knocked down at around 11:00am, he had to have had his phone with him at the time of his accident." Then the realization of what I said sank in. Dylan had text me shortly before he'd had his accident and I'd called him back and he hadn't answered. When I left my message he was probably already unconscious, I felt the colour drain from my face. "So where's his phone?" asked Jane. "Is it in his possessions here Dr. Thomson?.. Dr Thomson?" I heard a voice but it didn't register, mentally I was with Dylan lying in the snow as my call came and he couldn't answer it. "Dr.Thomson?.. DAN!" I snapped out of my haze. "Sorry what?" I replied. "Is Dylan's phone in his possessions here at the hospital?" "No, actually I hadn't even thought of that but no it wasn't there, do the Paramedics have it?" "No they haven't seen it either, they said his pockets were empty apart from a set of keys which we assumed were his house keys." "So if they don't have it, who the hell does?" said Jane with a slight hint of hysteria in her voice. "Who has Dylan's phone and why did they take it?"
