Dylan's phone was missing from the scene of the crash and we knew now that he had had it with him Officer Sharp broke the silence, "This really confirms our suspicions that this wasn't and accident. If someone had knocked Dylan over and then fled the scene in panic they wouldn't have risked getting out of their car to take Dylan's phone." "But who would want to hurt Dylan?" I asked out loud not directing the question to anyone specifically. "He hasn't spoken to me about anyone causing him a problem or indeed anything like that" I continued. "No nor me" followed up Jane. "I can't imagine anyone having a problem with Dylan; he's very popular and has a good network of friends." "Dr. Thomson, one other question, you questioned what Dylan was doing on Duncan Street, why is that?" "Well Officer Sharp, Duncan Street is 5 blocks away from my house and not on the route he would take home to his Moms house, there is no bus route there either. There was no reason for Dylan to be anywhere near Duncan Street unless?." "Unless what Dr. Thomson?" I paused as the thought processed itself through my mind. "Unless someone he knew had arranged to meet him somewhere that would require him to go that way. That would also explain possibly why his phone is missing." "How Dan?" Jane asked looking confused. "Well Jane, if someone he knew sent him a message or called him arranging for them to meet somewhere, the message or phone number would still be on Dylan's phone. When Dylan's phone was been found at the scene of the accident we would have gone through it and found it. Therefore the person who had called or sent the message would want to take the phone with them because it implicates them." "That's a strong theory Dr. Thomson" Officer Sharp commented after a couple of seconds of silence. Officer Sharp walked away slowly into a corner of the room speaking quietly into his radio. "But it still leaves the question who? I still know of no one who would want to hurt Dylan. I wonder maybe if I, hmmm, yeah that might work." I said as I pulled my phone from my pocket. Jane looked at me with a confused look on her face. "Dan what are you talking about?" she asked as Officer Sharp rejoined us. "I'm going to text Dylan's phone and see if I get a response. Let's see if we can find out who this person is." I picked up the phone and tapped in a message 'Who are you? Why did you hurt Dylan?' I pressed the send button and waited. Ten minutes passed and there was no response, the dejection was obviously clear on my face and I slumped back down on the sofa. "We have other ways of finding this person Dr. Thomson, the traffic accident branch is at the scene of the accident and they will be taking pictures and casts of all imprints in the snow so hopefully we'll get tyre prints and also shoe prints of the person who did this as they got out of the car to take the phone. Also when Dylan wakes up after his surgery he'll be able to tell us who it is." With all that had been going on the fact that Dylan was in surgery had slipped my mind but the comment from Officer Sharp had brought me back to earth with a bump. "I need to go and check on how he is doing in surgery. Jane are you ok here with Officer Sharp?" "I'll be fine Dan you go and check on Dylan." "It's ok Dr. Thomson I'll look after Mrs. Henderson, I have some more questions I need to ask and maybe I can help inform Dylan's father too and get him brought here to be with her." This comment halted me in my tracks and I turned to look at Jane. Jane's eye's met mine and she nodded at me slowly encouraging me to carry on my mission of getting an update on Dylan. As I slowly closed the door to the relative's room I heard Jane start to explain the situation to Officer Sharp. I felt sorry for the poor man; he had intended his comment to be supportive and encouraging but shortly was going to find out the true tragedy of the situation and would be feeling extremely guilty and as though he couldn't say anything right today. I dashed over to the reception counter where Cassie was processing paperwork for the constant flow of people who had been coming through the doors of the ER all day. "Cass has there been any more news on Dylan?" I asked hopefully but Cassie's face gave me the answer before she did. "There have been some complications Dan, they've just sent an order for 8 units of blood." I didn't stop to hear anymore of her update, I turned and ran, headed towards the stairs that would take me up to two flights to the Operating Rooms. I leapt up the stairs two at a time like a crazed man trying to escape a chasing lion. I reached the floor where the operating rooms were located, breathing heavily after the exertion of the stair climb suddenly realizing I didn't know which room. "For fuck sake!!" I said to myself in frustration. I decided that I would call Cassie rather than going back down the stairs and blindly took my cell phone out of my pocket and swiped across the screen to unlock it and make the call. As the screen flashed on the new message icon appeared on the screen. I had put my phone on silent when I had been working in the ER and had forgotten to turn the sound back on when I'd sent the text to whoever had Dylan's phone. I stood for a second looking at the screen not knowing whether or not I wanted to open the message, lost momentarily in the inertia of my indecision. I pressed the icon on the screen to open the new message. 'I hope the fag bitch dies!!' The message winded me as if something had hit me full on in the chest, I staggered over to a wall, gasping for air and trying to support myself. Placing both hands against the wall, still struggling for breath I tried to combat my urgent need to vomit. I fell to my knees resting my head against the cold, grey painted concrete wall and read the message again. 'I hope the fag bitch dies!!' Tears started to well in my eyes; someone had done this to Dylan because he was gay. He must have been getting bullied at school and he never mentioned it to me, why didn't he mention it to me? I now felt angry at Dylan. "Stupid, stupid, stupid shit" I spat vehemently, "Why didn't you fucking tell me?" I slumped backwards sitting with my back propped against the wall, tears now flowing like the gates to a dam had been opened. My anger had disappeared in a flash like a firework replaced with immense sorrow and heartache. As I sat there crying another message flashed across the screen. "Haha, you're fucking next fag, you and your dead bf can be together for always then LMAO"
