I sat there looking at the screen of my phone, reading and re-reading the message. It was clear to me now that Dylan had been in danger and he hadn't known how serious it was. The anger I was feeling inside cemented my resolve, I was going to find this fucker and I was going to make him pay for what he did. I wiped the tears that had been flowing constantly for the last few minutes and dragged myself up from the floor, I needed to check on Dylan's surgery and I needed to share the messages with the police. Now standing I dusted myself off and called Cassie to find out which theatre he was in. Theatre five had been Cassie's reply and I headed off with new purpose. The theatres were split into an east and a west block. The east block had theatres 1-9 and west had 10 - 18. Each wing had its own security/reception area and I needed to swipe my ID pass to get through the double doors into this area. I swiped my ID pass over the reader and the beep and green light told me I could enter. In the reception area behind a desk sat a nurse that I didn't know. "Hi there I am Dr. Thomson I just wanted to check on Dylan Henderson's progress." "Hold on a second Dr. Thomson let me just check and see if there is an update on the system. Oh he's still in surgery in theatre 5." "Who's the surgeon?" I asked. "It's Dr. Blake and Dr. Purell." "Ah great I know Dr. Blake I'll stick my head through and get an update. Thank you for your help." The nurse nodded at me as I walked off up the corridor to the operating theatres. The operating theatres in the hospital are mostly glass fronted and in between the main corridor and the theatre itself is a scrub room, where the surgeons and nurses wash up before and after the operation. On the wall in each room is a phone/speaker system so people from the outside can communicate with the people inside. I picked up the phone. "Hey Steve it's Dan Thomson." I said hearing my voice boom out over the speaker in the theatre. "Can you give me an update on how your patient is doing?" I saw Steve Blake talk to one of the nurses who walked over to the phone picked up the handset and took it over to him, placing it against his face so he could communicate. "Hey Dan, patient is doing ok, was a little touch and go at one point as he was losing a lot of blood but once we found what was causing it we soon fixed that. Other than that the fractures are fairly simple ones and the head injury is a superficial cut so all in all a lot better that it could have been. I'm guessing him landing on snow actually cushioned his body somewhat reducing the severity of the injuries, I am not sure it would be so favorable if it had been the summer." "That's great, thanks so much Steve you've made my day, truly!" I walked out of the operating theatre with a bounce in my step and a big smile on my face. Dylan was going to be fine, although I am sure very sore, but he was going to make it back to me and I couldn't have been happier. I pushed through the double doors at the end of the east wing saying a cheery goodbye to the nurse at the reception station. I took my phone out of my pocket thinking seriously about sending a message to Dylan's assailant when a message popped up on the screen; 'Got nothing to say to that FAG!!!!!!!!! So you're a coward as well as a queer! HAHAHAHA!!!!!! This time I felt the anger rise in me, the burning starting in my stomach and radiating around my body like a wave. I started tapping a reply into my phone; "Listen to me you fucker, when I find you you'll know what sort of coward I am." I finished the message and stopped reading what I had typed out on the screen of my phone realizing this was exactly what the person wanted, a reaction from me and I wasn't going to indulge him in this. I deleted the message and placed the phone in my pocket before heading down the stairs to give Jane the good news. As I got down to reception Cassie called out to me. "Dan, how's Dylan doing?" I turned and looked at her giving her a big smile and a thumbs up. "He's going to be fine Cassie thank goodness." I turned around and headed back opening the door to the relative's room to break the news to Jane and Officer Sharp. "Oh Dan, thank goodness you're back, what's the news" Jane asked. The worry and pain etched on her face for everyone to see. "He's going to be fine Jane, they had some worrying moments as he was bleeding internally but once they fixed that and they gave him some more blood he was doing ok. Obviously he is going to be extremely sore as he has fractures and the wound on his chest where we had to re-inflate his lung is going to be particularly sore but when he gets out of surgery they will give him a good dose of pain relief." The worry on Jane's face almost immediately disappeared and the brave front she had been putting on evaporated as the tears of relief started to flood down her face. I walked over to her and put my arms around her and hugged her in as her body shook and lurched with every sob. "Let it all go Jane" I said as I hugged her tightly. After a few more minutes Jane started to compose herself, the relief of knowing her son was going to be ok now firmly in her brain. Once Jane settled I stood up. "Right have some other news." "What other news?" asked Jane looking at me a little more worried. "You remember I sent that text to whoever has Dylan's phone, well I got a reply whilst I was upstairs. You need to be prepared though it's not pleasant." I handed my phone to Officer Sharp. "Well that confirms another theory then" he said shaking his head as he read through them. "This is now definitely an attempted murder and on top of that a hate crime, motivated by Dylan's sexuality." "Really, what, you're joking" said Jane totally taken aback by the last point. "Somebody tried to kill Dylan because he is gay? Is that what you're telling me?" "Yes Ma'am" said Officer Sharp as he handed Jane my phone. Jane read through the messages. "Oh my God, he's threatened to kill you too Dan!" "Yes I know, it took all of my will power to not reply to this message but I assumed the lunatic wanted a reply." "That was probably wise Dr. Thomson, he's made a threat to kill and you replying in a heated way could jeopardize a prosecution for this when we catch him, particularly if you threatened him." "That's nothing to what I'll do if I get my hands on him I can tell you that for a fact" I said feeling the anger rise again having re-read the messages. "That would also be extremely unwise Dr. Thomson" Officer Sharp responded tersely. "I know I know" I said trying not to get angrier at each thought of what had happened. Our conversation was interrupted by Cassie who walked in. "Dylan's out of surgery, I just got a call from the Operating Theatre. They are moving him to the recovery suite now." I looked at Jane and it was difficult to know whose smile was biggest. "Come on Jane lets go" I said as we headed out the door and up to the recovery ward.
