Slowly he turned to me, "Are they all like this?" he asked almost in a whisper. "I'm afraid so Dylan, I told you they were hate filled and vile." "Can I please take a look at the latest message?" Officer Sharp said interrupting Dylan's scrolling. Dylan handed the phone to Officer Sharp. "Man this guy is a sicko" he said shaking his head slowly, "We need to catch him quick before he focusses his attention on you Dan." Dylan's ears almost pricked up at this last comment and I could visibly see the concern engulf Dylan's face. "Why do you think this sick bastard will go after Dan?" he asked. "Well Dylan" replied Sharp, "You only got so far through the messages, if you'd gone one further you would see that the sender of the messages has already told Dan that he is next." "WHAT???" Dylan cried out. "What do you mean he's told you your next?" For the first time since the interview with Sharp had started I saw true fear in Dylan's eyes. He was scared, not for himself but for me. I held my hand out to Sharp indicating for him to hand me my phone. He placed it in my hand and I scrolled through to the second message sent and handed the phone to Dylan. "This guy is crazy" Dylan said shaking his head slightly. "Are you sure there is nothing else you can remember Dylan?" Sharp asked breaking Dylan away from reading the text over and over. "I wish I could remember more, I really do, I can't believe this is happening" Dylan spluttered tears running down his face like flash floods. "I need to remember, I know I need to remember but I can't and now my boyfriend could be killed because I can't remember." Dylan broke out in to a full on sob, the emotion and shock of the situation suddenly hitting him. "Someone wants me dead and wants my boyfriend dead too, how can this be happening? Why is this happening?" I sat on the bed and wrapped my arms around Dylan, "Dylan don't worry nothing is going to happen to me, I am safe" I said as Dylan rested his head on my shoulder. I could tell he was in pain from moving due to his stitches and broken clavicle but he seemed to just block it out, the emotional pain quite clearly winning the war. "Dan what would I do if something happened to you" Dylan said pulling away from my shoulder and looking directly in to my eyes. "Dylan" I replied firmly, "Nothing is going to happen to me you hear me, nothing. The sick person sending these messages is a coward and a bully who feels strong hiding behind his anonymity, he won't risk outing himself by coming for me, he's a coward and nothing more." Dylan smiled a little, my words comforting him as he made sense of what I had said. I however wasn't so convinced and the concern in me was great. "You need to get some rest now baby" I said tenderly wiping the remaining tears from Dylan's cheeks. "You look beat and you've had a rough few days." "You think?" he replied as my little understatement made Dylan chuckle slightly suddenly developing into a mighty yawn. "Go on baby get some rest and I'll see you later when you wake up." Dylan smiled at me closed his eyes and within seconds was asleep. The remaining three of us left Dylan's room and headed into the hallway outside. "I need to head home and take a shower and change" I said my body letting me know that it was ready for some attention. "Jane, do you have your car here or do you need me to give you a ride home?" I asked. "It's ok Dan I have my car here and I thought I might just stay for a while. I went home this morning and took a shower so I am good for now." "Ok, I'm going to head off and I'll be back later, call me or text me if there are any problems with Dylan." "Sure Dan, drive carefully as I'm sure you're beat." I smiled at Jane, walked over and gave her a hug. "Thank you, I will see you later." "I'll walk down with you Dan, I have some follow up I need to start" Sharp said as I was about to leave. As we walked down to reception Officer Sharp asked about how Dylan and I had met and I told him the story of our first encounter, leaving out the intimate stuff. "It's very clear that you guys love each other very much" Sharp responded after I finished my recollection. "Yeah it was a shock to be honest, I've never fallen for anyone so quickly or completely" I replied. Officer Sharp smiled. "You will catch this person won't you?" I asked hesitantly. "Oh there is no doubt about that, this guy is reckless and has already made several mistakes so it's just a matter of time before we get him." "Good, this guy needs to spend some serious time in Jail." We reached the reception area and I looked around at all of the faces still in there and felt instantly guilty again. I needed to get back in to the groove of work as they needed me but I still felt I needed to be with Dylan. Officer Sharp and I headed to the exit still chatting when I was nearly knocked off my feet by a kid running into the ER. "Woah kid calm down and look where you're going will you" Officer Sharp said in admonishment. I looked at the kid that had run in to me and he had tears running down his face but more strikingly he had blood dripping from his nose and a pair of black eyes one still fairly new and one a few days old. I steadied myself and grabbed the kid by the shoulders. "Hey" I said gently, "Calm down and tell me what's wrong and what's happened to you." The kid was inconsolable and nearly hysterical. I put my arm around him and led him towards the relative's room where I had been yesterday waiting for news on Dylan. "Come with me son" I said as supportively as I could muster, "Let's get you sorted out and out of the way of all these other people." We entered the relative's room and I stuck my head out of the door and saw one of the nurses on duty walk past. "Hey Sandy, can you get me a blanket and I need some supplies so can you bring me a triage trolley to please from one of the stations? Thanks." "Sure no problem Dan give me two minutes and I'll be with you." I moved back in to the relative's room and shut the door. "Ok son sit down here" I said assertively. The kid was on the brink of hyperventilating and clearly distraught. "Ok son look at me, look at me" I said snapping my fingers in his face to get his attention. His eyes focused on mine and I could see the panic and despair deep inside. This kid was hurting big time and I needed to find out why but first I needed to get him back in control. "Ok, listen to me, I need you to cup your hands together and cover your nose and mouth and breathe in time with me ok, understand?" The kid nodded and placed his cupped hands over his nose and mouth as instructed. "Now breathe with me, breathe in and breathe out, breathe in and breathe out." We carried on this exercise for a couple of minutes and I could see the panic dissipating from his face as he got control of his breathing. "Good, feeling a bit better?" I asked. The kid nodded at me some colour returned to his face. "Ok just carry on that for a little bit and I am just going to chase up the trolley and then I am going to check you over ok?" The kid nodded again. I opened the door to the room just as Sandy turned up with the trolley. "Here you go Dan, do you need any help in there?" "No I think I'm alright Sandy for the time being but I'll shout if I need anything, thanks for the trolley." Sandy smiled and walked away as I wheeled in the trolley. "How are you feeling now?" I asked. "I feel better thank you" the boy whimpered back at me. "Good lets wrap this blanket around you as you look frozen." I unfolded the blanket and wrapped it around the boy noticing that he had little or no fat on him. Not that he was emaciated but just an extremely thin kid. "You feel up to talking to me a little" I asked gently not wanting to freak the kid out. The boy responded with a little nod that showed he wasn't particularly comfortable with the situation but he knew he needed to talk. "Ok how about I start, my name is Dr. Thomson and I am an ER doctor here at the hospital so you have nothing to worry about you're perfectly safe. So what's your name?" "James, my name is James" the boy replied quietly. "Ok James, were you coming in here to get some treatment? Your nose looks like it's had a bang and you have a couple of peachy black eyes there. How'd you get those?" "I fell over at home, I'm really clumsy it drives my family mad and no I didn't come in here to get treatment?.I ?. I " James started to cry again and the despair on his face from earlier had returned. I moved over, sat next to him and put my arm around him. "It's ok, take your time, you're safe" I said trying my hardest to console him. As I hugged him the door opened slowly and Officer Sharp stuck his head through inconspicuously. "Everything ok?" he whispered. I nodded my head in answer. "Ok I will catch you later once I have finished the first stages of follow up." I gave him a thumbs up sign to tell him I understood and he quietly closed the door and left. "Ok James tell me what is making you so unhappy and upset and what brought you here?" James spluttered and sniffed trying desperately to get his words out. "Someone told me that one of my friends had been killed in a car accidents and I?I?I could only think of coming here to find out if it was true." As he finished the sentence James buried his face in his hands and sobbed. I squeezed him tight to me and let him cry. I could relate to him as 24 hours ago I was in the same position. "Don't worry you let it all out. If you tell me who the person is I can check for you" I said as he leaned in to me. "Thank you" he spluttered "You're so kind. My friends name is Dylan, Dylan Henderson" I stopped squeezing him as I felt a cold shiver run up my spine. "Sorry what did you say the name of your friend is?" "Dylan Henderson" he replied with a now terrified look in his face. "Oh my God he is dead isn't he, I can't believe it they fucking killed him, he was my only friend, he was the only one who understood me and I could talk to and they've killed him." The blood drained from my face as the realization of what the kid sat in front of me had said. "Are you Jimmy Kent?" I asked quietly. The boy looked up at me, shock and surprise across his face. "H..How do you know who I am?" "I'm Dylan's boyfriend, Dan Thomson." I replied. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry" he said and threw both his arms around me pushing his head against my chest. "I'm so sorry they killed him, I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry" he sobbed. I grabbed Jimmy by the shoulders and pushed him away far enough for me to be able to look in his eyes. "Jimmy, Dylan's not dead, he's pretty badly injured but he's alive and upstairs in a room. Who told you he was dead and Jimmy who the hell do you think killed him?" I held his stare my eyes piercing his. "It was my brother, my brother told me he was dead." "Stay here and don't move" I instructed. Jimmy nodded his understanding and I let go of him got up and ran from the room and out of the hospital exit hoping to catch Officer Sharp before he left.
