"What took you two so long?" Dylan's Mom asked with what I thought was an extremely knowing tone in her voice. "I was just thanking the Doc again for helping me earlier Mom, I wanted to thank him personally and in private" Dylan replied looking at me and flicking me a quick wink. I didn't know where to look, I was convinced my face was bright red from blushing but Dylan's Mom took it all in her stride. "I hope you like Lasagna Dan?" Jane Henderson asked as we made our way to the table. "Mom's Lasagna is the best Doc, you'll love it" Dylan enthused as he flashed me one of his massive cute smiles. "I can't wait Dylan, Jane it looks and smells fantastic" I said genuinely impressed by the fantastic Lasagna presented on the table. The smell of dinner crept up on me and I was suddenly reminded at how famished I was. I hadn't eaten all day and couldn't wait to tuck in to this homemade meal. "Doc, didn't you have wine with you?" Dylan asked. "DYLAN, don't be so rude" scolded Jane as she went bright red. "I'm so sorry about him Dan he can be very forward at times" I had a little chuckle inside about the last comment having already experienced Dylan's forwardness that very morning. "It's ok Jane honestly. I'd forgotten that I'd brought it with me. Do you have a cork screw somewhere and I can open the wine?" I asked walking out to where I had put the bottles on the floor. "I'll get it" Dylan exclaimed excitedly. "Mom can I get a glass too?" he asked as he rummaged through the kitchen drawers looking for the cork screw. "I don't know Dylan, you've had an exciting enough day today" replied Jane. As I walked back in to the kitchen I could see Dylan's face physically change from a happy grin to a sad frown. "Awww Mom please, tell her it will be fine Doc, you know better than anyone." "Well Dylan, a small drop of alcohol can be good for you, particularly red wine but I don't know you're only 16" I said trying to sound all official and authoritative. "Oh go on then Dylan get a glass, but just one glass you hear me" Jane relented much to Dylan's joy. Dylan passed me the cork screw and I carefully opened the bottle making sure not to break the cork. I walked round the table pouring a glass for everyone. "Right, now that drama is out of the way shall we eat?" asked Jane pointedly looking at Dylan. Dylan giggled as Jane began portioning out the Lasagna. "So then Dan, how long have you been working at the hospital?" Jane asked politely. "Well I have been there for about 12 months now, I just love working the ER its different everyday and its lovely being able to help people" I replied. Dylan sat there wide eyed paying hanging on my every word. He looked so beautiful just staring at me with his blue eyes and perfect skin, listening intently; concentrating as if his life depended on it. I picked up my glass and took a nice mouthful of the red wine. It was deep and fruity with hints of blackcurrant and vanilla. The wine warmed my body as its rich alcoholic content hit my stomach and mixed with the Lasagna. We ate and drank for the next hour, Jane Henderson probing me more on my life prior to the hospital and my family situation. "Do you have any siblings Dan?" Jane asked. "I have one brother and one sister both younger" I replied taking another sip from my magically refilled wine glass. "In fact my brother is about Dylan's age." Dylan took a big gulp out of his glass and stared directly at me. "I bet he's not as handsome as you though Doc" Dylan said taking both Jane and I completely by surprise. "Dylan, do you think you could be a little less obvious and maybe a little more tactful" Jane scolded. "Er, erm, sorry Mom" Dylan said suddenly flushing red in realization of what he'd just said. "Dan I am terribly sorry for Dylan's lack of tact. If you haven't already realized Dylan is gay and it's quite obvious that he has a rather large crush on you." Jane said apologetically. I didn't think it was possible but Dylan's face went an even deeper shade of red. "Mom please, you're embarrassing me and the Doc." Dylan hissed at his Mom as if he was terribly aggrieved by her words. Jane Henderson turned to look at Dylan her face now red itself and with and obvious fire burning in her eyes. "Dylan Oliver Henderson, don't you dare talk to me in that manner AND I think it was YOU who embarrassed yourself and Dan NOT me." The silence was deafening in the kitchen and seemed to last forever. I could never bear silences and had to try and lighten the atmosphere. "Good well after that revelation I need a stiff one and I mean a drink Dylan, more wine anyone?" I said cheekily. I could see the change in both of them. Jane started to crack first as I saw the smile creep across her face. "Doc, don't be SOOOOO rude." Dylan said in an over exaggerated high pitched voice. That was it for Jane Henderson; she could no longer hold her mood as she let out an enormous laugh which was instantly contagious. Dylan followed as I played up to being the innocent party. "What, What did I say? What are you both laughing at" I said holding up my arms in a gesture of complete innocence! I felt awkward and uncomfortable at the situation Dylan had inadvertently put me in but I noted that Jane Henderson had not reacted badly at all to the idea of Dylan having a crush on me. The laughing and lightheartedness of the current moment had helped alleviate my anxiety a little. The laughing died down and I reached for my glass this time draining it. I needed the hit of alcohol to drive me on through this. I really had no idea where this could or would end up. Dylan noticed my glass was empty and topped it back up draining the last wine from the bottle.
