Chapter 42 - Small Miracles.

After Hunter and I had emptied our bladders, we got dressed, and I fixed us something to eat.  After we finished our meal, we brushed our teeth and got ready to head over to the school, because I wanted to check on a few things before the kids showed up.

The custodial staff was on duty today, seeing this was going to be much bigger than either of our plays.  With the larger casts, we felt more relatives would be showing up, but the kids also sold tickets around the neighborhood.  Ads had been placed in the local newspaper and it was also making the rounds around social media.  A couple of the faculty members had agreed to sell tickets to those who didn't already have one, and the kids from the other cast were going to collect tickets and pass out programs to the people as they entered the auditorium.

To get ready for both of those things to happen, I set up a table and placed a couple of chairs at it that could be used by the people selling the tickets.  Then, I placed stacks of programs and a couple of wastebaskets near the entrances to the auditorium.  One of the kids at each set of doors would collect the tickets, rip them in half, and throw them into the wastebasket, as the other person handed out today's programs.

Once those things were taken care of and Gina had showed up with the extra tickets and the cash box, I went back to the band room so I'd be there when the boys showed up to change.  Before long, the room was abuzz in activity, as the boys were getting dressed before heading to the art room to have their makeup applied.  Of course, I was doing the same, so I left Hunter to guard the door so no one other than the cast could enter.

When we were ready, the boys and I went to stand in the wings on stage, while the crowd filtered into their seats.  I peered out to see what the audience looked like, and I was blown away by how many people were there.  Every time I looked there were more and more people, and by the time we were ready to begin, I don't think there was an empty seat in the house.  As soon as Gina signaled the instrumental music teacher to have the orchestra start the overture, the audience began to quiet down.  When the orchestra finished, I opened the curtain and the orphans started moving into place.

The entire musical went off without a hitch, and the kids did even better than they had on Thursday.  The audience was going wild when we took our curtain call, clapping, whistling, and cheering loudly.  We even had to go out for a second curtain call, because the audience wouldn't stop clapping, and then I sent the kids back to change out of their costumes.  After checking to make sure they had all gone to change, I went back to join them.

As I was about to walk into the band room, I told Hunter not to let anyone else in until I came out, and he promised to do that.  I then went inside and shut the door behind me when someone called my name.  When I looked up, all of the boys lowered their pants and underwear, exposing themselves to me.

"What are you doing?" I asked panicked, totally unprepared for this.

"One of the other guys told us about what happened when you put on Tom Sawyer, so we thought we should do it too.  It's our way of saying thank you for doing this with us and making the musical work out great!" the boy playing Mr. Brownlow stated.

"Ok, I get it, but cover up now.  I don't think any of your parents would appreciate knowing what you just did."

I took another quick glimpse around the room, though, and noted the vast difference between the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, and then I gave Gary and Nolan a quizzical glare.

"Hey, we didn't tell them about the other time or have anything to do with plannin' this," Gary blurted out.

"It was a couple of the other guys from the drama club.  They thought it would be funny to do it again," Nolan added.

"Ok, but make sure they don't try it again.  I'm going out to talk to the parents."

I went back to the auditorium and was quickly approached by several people.  The first was Jennifer from my old apartment complex.  "Marshall, I just wanted to tell you how great that was.  It was better than most high school musical I've ever been to."

"Thanks, Jennifer, and I'm glad you enjoyed it."

Next were Gary's parents.  "I don't know how in the world you got our son to do this, but my hat's off to you," his father began.  "You've really impressed me with the things you get him to do."  If only he knew.

"And I haven't heard him sing since he was in elementary school," his mother added.  "I wasn't even sure he could still carry a tune, so it was a very pleasant surprise for me."

"Gary did a fantastic job as the Artful Dodger, and he put his playful and energetic nature to perfect use.  I'm very pleased about the job he did."  They nodded and shook my hand before walking away.

"Hi, I'm Braedon's mom," the next person greeted me.  "It's a shame I couldn't talk my husband into coming to see this, because it was fantastic and you helped Braedon perform beautifully.  I'm so proud of him.  You did very well too."

"I'm very proud of Braedon as well.  He's a truly remarkable young man."

As she was leaving, I saw Mr. Baldwin approaching.  "Marshall, this is my wife, Mary, and my friend, Owen Ramsey.  We all thoroughly enjoyed this performance."

"Yes, you were all terrific," Mary added.  "Each of you are very talented."

"And I don't think I've ever been so impressed by an amateur production.  You are to be complimented and I hope Mike can arrange a nice raise for you," Mr. Ramsey stated as he stared at Mr. Baldwin.

"Unfortunately, salaries are controlled by the contract with the Teacher's Union, but I definitely appreciate what he does for us and I've documented it in his permanent file.  By the way, Marshall.  I saw Tom Chang here too, but he said he'd catch you another time."

"That's fine, and thank you for everything."

I then spoke to several more parents, and I glanced across the auditorium and noticed that Gina was doing the same thing.  As soon as we were the only ones left, she came over to speak with me as well.

"I don't think I've ever been approached by so many people or been given so many compliments after a performance before.  I believe it has a lot to do with you too."

"No, the kids were brilliant and they deserve the credit."

"Have it your way, but I know the part you played in all of this.  Oh, and just so you know, I had more than a few people ask who sang "Boy For Sale."  They thought I'd brought in a professional to sing that one song."

"Yeah, right."

"I'm serious, and they were very impressed when I told them you sang it."

"I guess there's no accounting for taste then."

"You're too damn modest, and you keep selling yourself short.  You were fantastic, and it's due to you that we were able to get the kids to perform at such a high level.  Are you ready to join me for dinner?"

"It's a little early yet, so what if I meet you at the Rusty Hammer a little later?  I promised to give one of the kids a ride home and I want to check to make sure everyone else is gone before I leave."

"Ok, I'll meet you there at 6:00, and I'll go check my classroom too, just to be sure there's no girls still hanging around."

The only one in the band room was Hunter, and I was definitely glad I hadn't forgotten about him, but then again, I still needed to change.  He smiled when I walked into the room.

"I was wonderin' if you forgot about me."

"No, there were just a lot of people who wanted to speak with me."

"Yeah, you guys did a really awesome job today.  I hope we do that good tomorrow."

"I'm sure you will.  Is your mother coming?"

"Yeah, she switched shifts with one of her co-workers so she could watch me.  I was surprised, cuz I thought she might just say she was too busy to come."

"I'm glad she's going to be there.  Are you going to introduce us afterward?"

"Yeah, if she wants."

"Then I hope she does."

Once I had changed and was sure everyone was out of the building, except the custodians, I took Hunter with me.  He thanked me again and said he'd see me the next day, and then he took his bike out of the foyer and took off down the driveway.  Once he was gone, I took a quick shower and then puttered around the house until it was time to go meet Gina.

I saw her car in the parking lot when I was looking for a parking spot, so I went inside.  She was already at a table and waved, so I walked over to join her.  "You know, we're going to have this same problem tomorrow," I said as I was sitting down.  "We just finish too early to go eat dinner,"

"I was thinking about that too, so what do you want to do?"

"We can either forget about doing this again, or we can just meet like we did today."

"I think this place is only open from noon to 6:00 tomorrow, and I believe they feature a buffet."

"Then I guess we can just eat early and take advantage of the buffet."

"Sounds good to me," she agreed as we opened the menus and decided what we wanted tonight.

We ended up talking shop the entire time and discussed the kids and how well they performed.  She even wanted to discuss ideas for next year's musical, and she was pretty sure she wanted to do Annie.  I said I was fine with that too, and we enjoyed a very lovely meal together.

She insisted on paying the bill tonight and told me I could pay the next day, and I thought that sounded fair until I was on the way home.  That's when I realized the buffet wouldn't cost as much as the meals we just had, so I was going to get out of it cheaper.  I guess that was how she planned on making it up to me for taking her out after the two plays.

When I got back to the house, I took care of a few chores before going to bed, and I was already looking forward to being with the next group as they performed.  Before they left earlier in the day, Gary, Nolan, and Braedon had all agreed to come to the next performance and collect tickets, pass out programs, or do anything else I needed.  I thanked them for offering to help, and they said their parents had already agreed to let them do it, so I said I'd see them the following day.  I was still thinking about them as I drifted off to sleep.

When I woke up on Sunday morning, I was excited and eager to get started.  I went through my morning ritual, got dressed, and fixed myself something to eat.  Once I finished and had cleaned up the mess, I brushed my teeth and headed to the school.  It was just like yesterday, but I didn't have Hunter with me this time, and I didn't have to get out the table, chairs, or wastebaskets.  They were still where we left them the previous day, but I did have to place today's programs by the auditorium doors for the kids to hand out.  After that had been taken care of, I went to the band room and waited for the boys to show up, and I put on my costume while I was waiting.

I was ready to go to make up before anyone else, so I went and had the women take care of me first today.  I had done much of it myself the previous day, but today I let them do it and I merely made little changes after they were done.  It's not that they had done a bad job, but I had a specific image in my mind and wanted to appear exactly as I'd envisioned.

Once I was done, I went back to the band room to supervise, and most of the kids were already dressed.  Hunter was one of the last to arrive, but he put his costume on quickly and then went to makeup too.  At that point, I went across to the auditorium and slipped onto the stage, excited about checking out the crowd again.  I was completely blown away when I saw there were possibly even more people out there today.  I wasn't sure how that was possible, since I thought we had a full house the previous day, but it was definitely another big crowd.

When Gina signaled the conductor to start the overture, the crowd began to settle down.  At the same time the kids were getting excited because they knew it would soon be their turn.  When the curtain opened, the orphans moved into place, singing as they went.

Just like the day before, the kids were absolutely incredible and everything went perfectly.  I was thrilled at how the performance went, and each of the kids nailed their roles.  Once again we received a tremendous ovation during the curtain call and we had to do it twice, and then I saw Tom Change waiting to congratulate me as soon as the curtain call ended.

"Marshall, another fantastic job.  I came yesterday too, and was extremely impressed.  This is my wife, Katherine, and she came with me yesterday too, and we were both blown away by what you accomplished.  I'll talk to you more during the week, but I wanted you to know that I'm putting you in for doing four performances, since you did this with two completely different casts.  Truly amazing, and you gave a lot more students a chance to be part of this, so you earned it.  I'll bring the check for that to you as soon as it's cut."

"Thanks, Tom, but I thought it was already being incorporated into my direct deposits."

"No, this is separate and they don't pay you until you complete the contract.  That's because we weren't sure how many performances you'd be putting on.  You'll be getting a check for $2,000, minus whatever withholding is required."

"That's fantastic and it will really help out with summer coming up."

"I'm glad you'll be able to use it."

In fact, that will pretty much take care of my problem about not getting paid over the summer, but I didn't have time to think about that.  I hurried over to the band room to see how things were going, and when I got there, the same thing happened as the day before.  The boys were all waiting for me to show up, and as soon as the door closed behind me, they all dropped trow.

"Hey, what's going on?"

"We heard this is now the normal way to end a great performance," one of the boys answered.

"You shouldn't be doing this.  I don't want any of your parents causing a problem if they find out what you're doing in here."

"Don't worry, they won't, but we didn't want to break the tradition and jinx the next play or musical so it wouldn't be as good.  We all agreed to do this, so no one is being forced."

"Ok, but cover up now and get changed."

I had to admit I liked this new tradition, because it gave me a lot of eye candy.  The younger boys were basically immature, but some of the older boys were impressively hung, and it gave me a whole new perspective of them.

As soon as no one was still hanging out in the open, I went over to see if anyone was waiting to speak with me.  Jennifer was standing beside the door when I entered, since she remembered it was the one I'd used the previous day.

"Marshall, another great job and a whole new cast.  Impressive, and even Duane enjoyed this."

"Thanks, Jennifer, and I'm glad you came again."

Once she finished speaking to me, Jon's mother approached.  "Jon idolizes you and it was really nice that he got to work with you again.  I was really impressed with the job you did with these kids, and I thought you did very well too."

"Jon earned his role, and Gina Atkins was his biggest supporter, because of his sweet singing voice.  He did a fantastic job, though, and I'm really proud of him.  And thank you for your kind words about me too."

"Mr. Roberson, I think if anything ever happened to my husband and myself, Jon would want you to adopt him, rather than one of our other relatives."

"I hope that never happens, but I would be happy to take care of him, if the need ever arose."

After we finished speaking, another woman came up to greet me.  "Hi, I'm Hunter's mom, and he told me to make sure I got to meet you.  I overheard what Jon's mother said, and I know Hunter adores you too.  He's been talking about you since he and Devin began working out at the Y with you, and he is really hoping he has you for a teacher next year."

"I'm glad to meet you, and I enjoy Hunter too.  He's a good kid and I hope he's in one of my classes next year as well.  I'm also glad he decided to be part of this."

"I think he only did it because of you.  He probably wouldn't have been part of this otherwise, so I want to thank you for that too.  Um, would you mind if I made a personal comment?"

"Not at all."

She moved closer and whispered in my ear.  "Hunter never knew his father, and I think he looks at you that way.  I'm glad he has a strong man in his life that he looks up to."

"Thank you for saying that, and I'll try not to ever let either or you down."

"I'm sure you won't," she added before walking away.

I talked to a few more parents after that, and Gina and I stayed in the auditorium until everyone had gone.  We then did a quick check of both rooms to make sure everyone was gone, and we carried the things that had been left behind back to the storage area so they wouldn't be in the way on Monday.  Once everything was put away, I changed quickly, cleaned off the makeup, and then I followed Gina over to the Rusty Hammer.

We took advantage of the buffet, and there was a nice selection and everything was delicious.  Once again we talked shop as we ate.  "Marshall, I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed working with you this year.  I'm also volunteering to help you with your plays next year, and I can't wait to work with you on the next musical too."

"Thank you, and I've enjoyed working with you as well.  I'm looking forward to next year as well."

"In talking with the parents these past two days, there were quite a few of them that told me how much their kids admire you and like working with you.  I'm sure you won't have any trouble getting them to sign up for the drama club next fall."

"I hope not, and I've enjoyed working with them too.  This year has been incredibly rewarding."

When we finished our meal, I said goodbye to Gina and told her I'd see her the next day.  We then went home and it took me a while to calm down from the emotional high I was still on.  I also thought back to some of the parents' comments and wondered how they'd feel if they knew what else I'd been doing with their sons.  Hopefully, they'll never find out.

I also remembered about both casts of boys exposing themselves to me.  I'm not sure if they'd figured out I was gay and felt it would be a good way to pay me back, or if it was merely the result of something similar happening after we'd put on Tom Sawyer.  It seemed as if they now had the impression that they needed to do it from now on, or else they'd jinx the next production.  I'm not sure who started that rumor, but whoever it was, I definitely owe him my gratitude.

Thinking about that also gave me a raging erection, so I went to the bathroom to masturbate.   I was afraid I'd have a nocturnal emission if I didn't take care of the problem before going to bed, and when I blew, it was one of the most amazing orgasms I've ever enjoyed by my own hand.  I think it was a result of the euphoric high I was still feeling after two fantastic productions, and was heightened by the mental images I conjured up of both groups' unusual 'salute' while they were changing.

After I finished, I took a shower and then made sure I was ready for school.  We only had a week and a half left to the academic year, and then we'd be on summer break.  The information Tom Chang shared with me today took away some of my concern about how I was going to survive during this time, and the check was going to come in very handy.  If only everything would work out so well.

I was still floating in the success of the weekend when I went to sleep, and that led to some very wonderful dreams.  This also led to a great night's sleep, so I was well rested and feeling terrific when I woke up.  I flew through my morning preparations, drove to school, and when I was signing in, Mr. Baldwin was waiting for me.

"Marshall, please come into my office.  I have some important news to share."

I thought he was merely going to hand me another congratulatory letter and tell me the original would be placed in my permanent file, but it turned out to be something quite different.

"Marshall, did you realize that I'm on the Advisory Board for the recreation department?"

"No, I had no idea."

"I didn't think so.  That's how I got to know Owen Ramsey, because he's the director of the recreation department."

"I see.  He seemed like a very nice guy."

"And he was extremely impressed with you.  I don't know if you realize this, but the recreation department puts on a couple of plays over the summer using elementary and middle school students.  They have a mobile unit they use as a stage, and they usually do this at Burgett Park.  Owen told me that he hasn't hired anyone for that job yet, and he wanted me to ask if you might be interested.  It doesn't pay as much as teaching, but it would give you a steady income over the summer.  What do you think?"

"I think it sounds great!  I was wondering what I was going to do for money this summer, so this is incredible."

"Then I'll call Owen and tell him, and I'll set up a time for you two to get together to discuss particulars."

"Thank you.  This will help out tremendously."

"Don't thank me.  It was the job that you did on the musical that convinced him.  As I said, he was extremely impressed."

"That may be, but first Tom Chang told me something yesterday that would help, and now this.  I must have an angel on my shoulder or a leprechaun in my pocket."

"It's not luck, it's talent.  You've earned whatever breaks have come your way."

Needless to say, he'd just made my day!
