Back in Old Amsterdam By Storyteller 2 Part 4 The Monday We all had dinner in the hotel and it was agreed we would all have an early night. David was paired with Paul and Henk came to our room. The three of us laid together naked on the big bed and had a kiss and a cuddle. Henk's exertions earlier had made him tired and he asked if we minded if he moved over to the other bed and went to sleep. Wim said that we needed to talk about tomorrow but we would be quiet and I tucked Henk in with a good night kiss and by the time I was back under the covers with my Wim he was dead to the world. Wim said that when they were downstairs the boys had agreed to go to the pool in the morning and come back to the hotel for lunch, he had arranged with Helga to do soup and sandwiches as the hotel didn't do a proper lunch. It would mean that he would be here when the results from the Court came through. I told him that I was going to ring the Legal Guys as soon as I got to work and tell them to ring me as soon as they knew the result. Wim set the alarm call and we snuggled up together, each in each others arms, content in our togetherness and within seconds we were sound asleep. I felt Wim trip the alarm and roll off me. He had been sleeping on his tummy right on top of me. As he rolled off I felt the loss of heat from his body and instinctively pulled him back. He kissed me deeply and his arms wound round my neck, "Good morning my new Dad - hopefully," he said, "it is a quarter to seven, plenty of time to have a shower and some breakfast before you go to work. Do you mind if I have a bit of a lay in." "Not at all my love," I said, swinging my legs over the side of the bed and sticking the inevitable cigarette in my mouth. Two or three hefty draws on the cig and I made my way to the bathroom. The five S's completed I got dressed in a suit for the first time since last Friday. I looked at the two boys, both were fast asleep. I kissed my Wim on the forehead and made my way to the dining room for breakfast, taking all my bits with me so I wouldn't disturb the boys later. The tram journey was uneventful and I arrived a little early for the meeting. This gave me chance to call the Legal Guys. They were in the office and were just about to call me at the hotel, so it was a good job I called them. I gave them my office number and told them to ring me the moment they knew the outcome. I was given their mobile number as they were going to be in and out of the office all day. That lot settled I went to the meeting. Only half the expected people were there so we waited for the others to arrive. At 09.15 the Chairman of the meeting said he wasn't prepared to wait any longer and the meeting started. It was about 10.00 hrs. when the coffee arrived with a note of apology from the missing members with a very valid reason why they could not be there. We discussed what we were going to do and it was agreed we could get everything finished by lunchtime which suited me fine. As Friday was still free we arranged a morning meeting only. During the coffee break I called the legal team and told them I would be at the hotel by the time they knew the outcome. The arrangement suited them as they could come and deliver the completed papers to me direct, always assuming that things went the way we hoped. We finished by 11.30. As I was leaving the World Trade Centre I remembered there was a jewellers in the shopping concourse. I went and looked for a wrist watch for Wim. I had no idea what he would like so I decided I would get him a dress watch which could either be worn all the time or, if he wanted a sports type, one we could get one later. I asked the assistant what types of watches he had. He pointed out that they didn't stock one like I was wearing -- they wouldn't sell many 18k Rolex Oyster Presidents -- but they did a nice Cartier. He brought a rectangular watch with clear Roman numerals in a 18k slim case with a black leather strap. It was exactly the right size for Wim's wrist, not a boys watch but bigger than a ladies. I had a vision of it on his wrist and I was sure it was exactly right. A fitting present for my new son. Even if things didn't go as we hoped it was still a fitting present for my Wim. The assistant gift wrapped it and I caught the tram back to the hotel. The tram driver must have been in training for the Indi 500 or maybe it was Josh Gerstaffen but I arrived back at the hotel by 12.10. Van der Valk was at the desk and greeted me with a smile. I told him about the meeting and he said Wim and the rest of the gang were still at the pool. He asked if Helga should make a few more sandwiches and a drop more soup. I thanked him and said I would like that but I would wait for the boys. He said that they said they would be back between 12.30 and 12.45. I asked him to let Wim know I was in the room when he got back. He said he would and I took the room key and called the lift. I entered 369 to find it was back to normal, just one double bed. I changed out of the suit and donned my usual lazy clothes. It was 12.20. I wrote a note on the gift tag and put Wim's watch in the drawer in the bedside locker. I could murder a cuppa. I was about to ring room service when there was a knock at the door. I was surprised as I was sure the boys would have come straight in. It was Helga, she just smiled and gave me a tray with a big steaming pot of tea and the means to drink it. I thanked her profusely an set it down on the table. I gave it a few minutes and poured out a cup of nectar and lit a cig. It was just what I needed. I put my feet up and relaxed in the armchair. I must have dozed off because the next thing I remember was a pair of warm sensuous lips brushing mine with a hand behind the back of my head. I opened one eye which looked directly into a deep blue orb, my hand matched the one behind my head and we pulled our lips together. I waited for the inevitable "they are at it again" but it didn't come. Wim was on his own. We broke the embrace and just hugged. "Love you," he said. "No, you don't." "Yes, I do". We went into the now standard routine until we both stopped by smothering each other with kisses. "Where are the rest of the crew?" I asked. "Downstairs waiting in the dining room. Shall we go?" "No, let them wait for a minute or two; I have something for you, close your eyes." He stood there with his eyes closed looking upwards. I think he thought he was just going to get another kiss. I got the box from the drawer and took his hand and folded his fingers round the box. I gave him the expected kiss and said, "Now open your eyes." I love it when you give someone an unexpected present, even more when it is someone you love with all of your heart. His face was a picture. He just stood there looking at the wrapped box. "Well open it then," I said as he was reading the gift tag. Much to my surprise he very carefully removed the wrapping paper, he didn't rip it of in a frenzy. He saw the name picked out in gold on the leather box. He slowly opened the box. He took a deep intake of breath and held it. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "Do you realise this is the first present anyone has given me - EVER?" I couldn't believe what he had just told me so I said, "What about Christmas and Birthdays then?" "Cards and money but no actual present." He paused and then said, "Can I wear it now, pleeeease?" "Well, that is what I bought it for. Do you like it?" I could see from the look on his face he was over the moon but I wanted to hear from his own lips what he thought. "Put it on for me please, I want you to be the first person to put it on my wrist." I found it most difficult to put it on his wrist with his head and lips all over my cheeks and ear, especially when his tongue was darting down my ear canal. I eventually managed to fix it and stood back to see what it looked like. I was a I hoped, exactly the right size and the gold on his wrist was right, dead right. He looked at his watch, switched on the TV to text and checked the time. "It is absolutely fabulous and it is exactly right to the second, Oh, Kris, I think it is fantastic! It must have cost a fortune. Can we go and eat now? I want to show the boys my new watch. "If I was you I wouldn't say anything about it and just see if anyone notices it." "Great idea." They won't - oops - they will not think I'm showing off then." I smiled at his own correction of his English and we made our way to the lift. The car was on its way up and as the door opened five boys fell out. Five BOYS! "We were coming to see where you had got to," Paul said, the soup is ready and we are HUNGRY." Now if you remember I told you it was a small lift so it was a squeeze when Wim and I pushed our way in. To say it was cozy was an understatement. You will have probably guessed the extra two bodies were the two from the pool who lived near David, Eric and Peter. As we got out of the lift I held Wim's arm and as the others moved into the dining room I asked what Eric and Paul were doing here. He said they were at the pool and joined in with the training and as their parents were at work they asked if they could tag along. "I think they wanted to see you again," he said with a sly smile. If you want I'll play your pipe for you!" "Not in the dining room you won't. Damn, now you've got me at it -- you will not." We both started to laugh as we entered the dining room and the others wanted to know what the joke was. "I won't tell you," Wim said, this time with tears streaming down his face. He got a playful clip on his bottom. I hate private jokes in company, it makes the others feel left out. I told them what we had been laughing at. Oh dear there I go again, ending a sentence with a preposition. If I am going to teach Wim the Queen's English I must remember how I phrase my sentences. It was Paul who said, "We had all noticed that since you came back from England Wim's English was much better than ours and his accent had changed, well his English one had." With that Helga brought a big pot of steaming meat and vegetable soup. I looked at Wim and smiled. I remembered the first night we met, and the bowl of the same type of soup he had brought for me as a room service meal. This concoction was just as good and in no time at all the pot was empty. Large plates of sandwiches were passed round and devoured by "hungry nosed" boys. Where the expression "hungry nosed" comes from I know not where, but it was another favourite of my old Grandmother. Wim decided we should all go to the meeting room and they would tell me what they had done this morning. I heard Eric call out to his friend, "Hey, Kevy, are you going to ask him?" I looked for another boy but there was none. The smaller of the two interlopers came over to me and said to me, "Excuse me, sir, but do you mind if we stay for the team brief, we have learned such a lot yesterday and today?" "I thought your name was Peter?" I said. He smiled and said, "It is, I'm Peter Kevin Geest. I like Kevin more than Peter so my friends call me Kevy. My friend is called Eric Hugh Van der Mere and he likes Hugh NOT Hughie just Hugh, so we both go by our second names to our friends. You can call me Kevy if you like." The boys told me they had split into groups of two with Wim supervising and had practised the turns and then Henk had done the watching whilst Wim did his practice and then they had a practice race with Kevy and Hugh timing them. Wim had remembered the times they had done on Sunday and they had improved by over 3 seconds on their best Sunday time. They were all very pleased with themselves. Wim looked at his watch and then at me and pointed to his wrist. I looked and the time was 14.45. Wim looked worried. The rest of them picked up on the time but it was Phillip who said, "Where did you get that fabulous watch. Let me see." As the boys crowded round Wim, the phone rang in the room. Wim moved like greased lightening. You could have heard a pin drop. I'm sure everyone held their breath. "Yes, he is in here with me. OK, I'll tell him," and he put the phone down. He looked at me and said, "The Legal guys are in the office they want to see me and you now." "Right," I said, "you boys stay here we will be back as soon as we can." Wim grabbed my hand. It was sweaty and cold, his grip was iron like. He had gone deathly white and his breathing had become very shallow. "Deep breaths, my love," I said softly, "come on lets find out your fate." He took some deep breaths and we walked to the office. Sat behind Van der Valk's desk was the Senior Legal guy with a smile as wide as the Zieder Zee. "Congratulations, Mr. Hammond you now have all legal rights concerning Wim Van der Valk. We were coming past here so we thought we would bring you the paper work and break the good news personally." He gave me a bound file with all the papers signed sealed and now delivered. I was just about to thank him for all hid efforts when Wim just groaned and collapsed in heap on the floor. I moved with the speed of light. I was down by his side, my fingers round his wrist feeling for a pulse my face by his nose and mouth checking for breathing. His pulse was there albeit weak and his breathing was very shallow. He was as white as a sheet, little beads of sweat on his forehead I picked him up in one movement dishing out orders left right and centre. Within two minutes I had him in the fetal position laid on our bed in the room. I had a duvet over the top of him and Helga was there with some sweet tea and a small shot of Brandy. I asked them to leave us alone for five minutes to see how he was and if I got no response I would have to call a Doctor. As they left I saw Wim open one eye and a slight smile come on his face. As the door closed he tried to sit up. He was still a bit groggy so I helped him up and gave him the tea with a shot of Brandy in it. His face screwed up at tea with sugar and then the Brandy hit him. "Is my new Dad - my PROPER NEW DAD - trying to get his new Son - his PROPER NEW SON - pissed out of his mind?" "No, he bloody well isn't. And my new son gave everyone one hell of a fright." "I'm sorry, Dad, but I just passed out. I don't know why but I just saw everything go black and the next thing I remember was hearing you asking people to leave us alone. How long was I out?" I looked at my watch, "About 3 to 4 minutes, which is a long time for a faint." "It must have been all the tension," he said, "and then when I knew it was all over I just let go and passed out. I'm feeling better already. I need a big hug from my Dad and I will be 100% in two minutes." "I'll give you a hug for longer than that and we will see what you are like after that." He finished the fortified tea and I hugged him to me. I rocked him to and fro. He just purred like a cat, his arms down on his lap, his head on my chest his bottom on my lap. He was my baby. A bloody big baby and getting heavy. He shifted his legs to the floor and stood up. A smile on his face and announced, he was now fit to meet his public. "Come on, Dad, let's go and see the boys." The colour now back in his cheeks he rushed off to the lift. Helga was coming down the corridor. She stopped me, gave me a whopping kiss on the lips and said, "I know you will, but look after him and keep him safe, he is a lovely boy." "You can bet your bottom dollar on that one," I said as Wim was shouting he was holding the lift, "I'll see you before we go," and I ran after Wim. I sent Wim to see the boys and I called into the office. The Legal guys were still there. I explained what the problem had been and that Wim was fine now. The Chief Legal guy said he realised the strain everyone had been under but he was pleased everything had gone the way we wanted. He said the Hotel sale was progressing well but he didn't expect completion till next month. He said he would get in touch with George at the Inn's of Court in Greys Inn Road in London if that was OK with me. I told that was fine, thanked him yet again for all his good work and they left. I needed to be alone. I felt totally drained. I left the office and found a little room two doors away from where the boys were. It had a small armchair and a coffee table. I sat down with my thoughts. What had I done. The enormity of my actions were just hitting me. Here I was, an old man, taking on the responsibility for a 14 year old foreign boy. I was going to uproot him from his normal environs whisk him away to a new life. God he would need support. I hoped that I was capable of giving him that support. True he was mature mentally for his age, true he was fully aware of what he was doing, or was he! The only thing that I was certain of was that I loved him as though he was my own flesh and blood, would that be enough? Only time would tell. I closed my eyes and took some deep breaths. I must have been sitting there for a good ten minutes when a small quiet voice said in my ear, "You are thinking about me again aren't you, Dad." It was Wim sat on the arm of the chair looking at me with that look of his that would melt stone. It exuded pure unadulterated love. "I was, my love," I said. "I was just thinking ...." He put his hand on my arm and came close and said, "I know what you were thinking and, yes, WE have done the right thing. I know it is a big step, I know it could be difficult at times, I know I will miss some of my friends, I know it will be different at a new school, I know that you may have to be strict with me sometimes I expect that but I know you will be fair and just and I will abide by rule 2 in fact I make you a promise now from the bottom of my heart that, I Wim Van der Valk-Hammond, do solemnly swear to Kris Hammond that I will abide by all the rules set my Dad." With that he gave me a kiss on the cheek and grabbed my hand and pulled me to the door. We entered the conference room where all the other boys were lined up. Wim said proudly, "My friends, I would like you to meet my Official New Dad. As of 14.32 today, 25th March 1998, the man you see before you has been my NEW DAD," and with that he flung his arms round my neck, lifted his legs up and wound them round my waist and locked his lips to mine. There was a chorus from Henk and Phillip of, "Oh shit, they are at it again." David, Kevy and Hugh said when Wim had finished, could they do that as well. Henk and Phillip told them they were at the back of the queue. When Wim and I had finished they came one after each other. Each shook my hand and wished us well and each wanted a kiss from both of us. Phillip's was as usual passionate, wet and deep. Henk's was the most tender he had ever given me, and I could feel he wanted more. David started to kiss me and then broke down in floods of tears. I held him close and wiped his eyes and told him it wasn't the end of our friendship, which mollified him somewhat. That left the two new comers. Hugh was first. He gave me a gentle lip to cheek kiss and moved to Wim. The kiss he gave Wim was totally different. It was full of lust and passion and he couldn't disguise it. On the other hand Kevy gave Wim his kiss before Hugh and then moved to me. He held my wrist and moved so his body was in full contact with mine. He put my hand on the cheeks of his bottom and his other hand came behind my head. His breath came in pants as he pulled our lips together. I felt his groin grind into mine and I squeezed his buttock, his tongue made for where my tonsils would have been if I hadn't had them out when I was a kid. I couldn't believe how passionate this young boy was. I tried to break the kiss but he wasn't having any. He pushed harder, I could feel his boyhood rigid against my thigh. I moved both my hands to his waist and gently but firmly pulled him away. He left his tongue in my mouth until the very last minute. I could see Hugh was doing exactly the same to Wim. Wim and I exchanged looks which said a thousand words. The boys then went back to having a better look at Wim's watch. They insisted he take it off and passed it round for each to try it on. I could see Wim was on tenter hooks in case it was damaged. He eventually got it back and came to me to have it securely strapped on his wrist. It was agreed by all assembled boys "he was a lucky bastard," little did they realise they were correct in both statements. They say "Time and Tide wait for no man" and today was no exception. It had got to 17.00 and the phone in the room rang. I answered it and was told that Henk's dad was there to take Henk and Paul home. We saw them off and Henk's dad was delighted at the outcome regarding Wim. He reminded me about the job he wanted me to do and suggested we came over in the Spring when Wim was on school holidays for a break and complete the job then and go for a tour of the bulb fields. Both Wim and I thanked him and said we would be pleased to come over. David took charge of Kevy and Hugh and as they only lived less that 200 metres away from the hotel they walked home. Wim and I walked back into the hotel and retired to our room. Wim sat in one armchair and I sat in the other. We just looked at each other. Not a word was spoken between us. We were obviously taking stock of our situation. We both opened our mouths to speak and both shut them together. I smiled and said, "You first." "I was about to say," he said, "it's done. I feel like it is a bit of an anticlimax. I feel so washed out. I thought I would, as you would have said, gone ballistic, jumped up and down, whizzed round the room and all I did was pass out. You must think I'm an ungrateful little sod." I looked him full in the face and said, "Do you still love me, do you still want to be my Son, do you still want me to be your Dad?" He got off the chair and came and sat on my lap, his arms loosely round my shoulders. He buried his head in my neck and said, "What the bloody hell do you think?" "I think it was the culmination of the last few weeks. Putting things at the back of our minds, that bloody letter in the drawer, not knowing what the Court would decide. It took the toll on both of us. We both had one hell of a lot to loose. I think it will be when we are back home that it will dawn on both of us the enormity of what we have both done." We sat with our arms entwined, totally relaxed, Wim's head on my shoulder and mine resting on the top of his. "You hungry? I asked. 'Cos if you are we can go to our favourite restaurant." "No, let's do that tomorrow night. I'm really tired, I need an early night." "Me too," I said looking at the time. It was surprisingly nearly 22.00. "You've got school in the morning, or does everyone go to the pool straight away?" "No, we have got to be at school at the right time, the Gala doesn't start till after lunch. You will be there won't you?" "It is held at the pool we trained in?" Yes, he nodded. "I'll be there early to get a good seat." He slowly peeled off his clothes and I followed suit. He looked worn out. I picked him up like a baby and he clung to me like a limpet. Holding him with one hand under his soft buttocks I pulled back the duvet and gently put him on the bed. I switched on the bedside light and turned off the main one. He turned towards me with his arms up and I slipped in beside him. He moved into the "Wim position" and I lovingly stroked the back of his head. His eyes closed, he snuggled up to me and in a far away voice said, "Good night Dad." By the time I replied, "Good night Son" he was asleep. I turned out the light, content in the knowledge I had done the right thing. I kissed his hair set the alarm and went to sleep.
