If we can find him, he can come live with us." I asked the boys as I pulled out of the driveway and down the short private road till we reached the edge of the property. "He went to stay at Romeo's, his boyfriend's place." Alex offered while playing with the radio until he found something he liked. The song had just started but I recognized the singer's voice at once, it was Reba's song `Fancy.' I couldn't help but smile at that, Alex had good taste in music, so few kids nowadays did. Daniel was the first to break out into song. "Just be nice to the gentlemen Fancy, they'll be nice to you!" It wasn't long before Alex joined in and I went ahead and turned the song back up. We had half an hour until we even reached Savannah and they didn't really seem to want to talk about Zack right now, which was fine by me cause I had something else I wanted to talk to the boys about. As the minutes passed and boys sang their way through a few more songs, stopping once their throats grew a bit hoarse, I noticed the Georgia sun growing dim and the first reaches of rain clouds loaming in the distance. It was nothing major, in truth the grass around my land had seemed a bit dried out lately so a little rain couldn't hurt. "So boys, we need to have a short chat about some things." I spoke, turning the radio off as the two boys turned to me, waiting for me to start. "If you guys are going to live with me for now on, I'm gonna need to have guardianship of the two of you, I'd like to find Zack as well. Alex, you mentioned his boyfriend, if you know where this Romeo lives, I'd like to go there at some point and try and find your brother." Both boys sat thinking for a few moments before trying to speak at the same time. "Zack said we weren't allowed to go to Romeo's because it was a dangerous neighborhood." I heard Alex first since he was closer to me than Daniel was. "Guardianship? Does that mean you're gonna adopt us?" Daniel asked while his brother was talking, his own concerns much more important in his mind than anything his brother could say. "Daniel, yes, I am thinking about adopting the two of you, Zack too, if he's willing." I offered in reply to Daniel, you turned to look out the window to contemplate what I'd said. "And as for Romeo's neighborhood, I'll be fine Alex, don't worry about that. Besides, if Zack is in any danger, I'll just call the police." Alex seemed startled by that, whipping his head around to look at me like I was insane. "You can't do that, Romeo will kill you if you bring the police to his doorstep." I raised my brows as Alex said that, it dawned on me that perhaps Romeo was an adult. "I'd rather doubt I'll have much trouble fighting off some teenager Alex, even if he wants to kill me." At this point, I already knew Zack's boyfriend was an adult, he had to be to own his own house, but I figured baiting Alex into revealing more about this mysterious Romeo could only help me deal with whatever situation Zack had gotten himself wrapped up in. "Romeo's older than you are Uncle Dylan, a lot bigger too." Daniel threw into the conversation, apparently he had been listening to his brother. "Yeah, he has long grey dreads and a bunch of tattoos all over his body. Paul said he was a criminal but when he tried to have Romeo arrested, a couple guys showed up at our trailer and threatened Paul and Momma." The more Alex spoke the more conflicted I was about it all. On the one hand, if Paul thought Romeo was a criminal I was less inclined to think so myself, on the other, if Romeo had enough sway to get a couple thugs to threaten people on his behalf, perhaps he was a criminal and Zack was in some real danger. "Alex, do you know where this Romeo lives? Once we get into the city, I'd like to go find Zack as soon as possible. We can go shopping later." I decided it wasn't worth risking it, if Zack was in a dangerous situation then it would be better for everyone to go get him out of it now. "Yeah, Romeo's place is a few blocks over from the trailer park. I can't remember how many streets but there is a big red house on the corner and an old broken down bus in the parking lot in front of the apartment building. Romeo owns the apartments, but Zack said we weren't allowed to ever go inside." I didn't really want to know what sort of activities Romeo and his thugs got up to in those apartments, but the real estate agent in me knew all too well what sort of trash you could find in that sort of neighborhood. We were still about ten minutes out from Savannah and I decided to push the speed limit a little bit since there were no cops on the road, getting there a few minutes faster couldn't hurt. No one moved to turn the radio back on and both boys seemed a bit preoccupied with their thoughts. I noticed that Daniel seemed to be rubbing his temples as if he had a headache and even Alex turned to look at him as the first few drops of rain finally started to hit the windshield. "Daniel, did you drink enough water? Does your head hurt?" I asked, there was a gallon of water in a compartment under the floorboard near his feet, if he was dehydrated, he could drink some of that until we found a place to stop and eat lunch. "No, it's the rain, Daniel always gets headaches when it rains." Alex said, looking back at his brother in concern as Daniel pulled his legs up into the chair, curling into a ball. "I'm fine Uncle Dylan." Daniel mumbled through the pain, it was obvious he was lying. Normally I would have turned around and went home, we could go shopping tomorrow, but we at least needed to see Zack and make sure he was okay. I hated choosing between children, but a migraine was nothing compared to the potential of what Zack might have been going through. "I'll tell you what buddy, once we find Zack we can get something to eat and go home okay? We'll go shopping tomorrow, I don't work on Sundays anyway." I was watching him in the rear view mirror, he was still rubbing his forehead but was growing more and more agitated. "No! I want to go shopping, I do!" Daniel yelled as he started crying. Alex unbuckled his seatbelt and started to climb into the back to hold his brother and I slowed down just incase something happened while Alex wasn't strapped in. "Come here, Daniel, it'll be okay, we can get some ice cream or something when we get home." Alex said, attempting to sooth his little brother. "Daniel, it's okay. I don't mind, once we get home I want you to take a shower, the water will help your head not hurt so much and then we can eat ice cream in our pajamas in the living room. Sound good?" I asked him, Daniel was still crying, but he wasn't sobbing or screaming when he responded. "Okay." He offered meekly in reply. Alex finally found the seatbelt for the middle seat, it'd been buried inside the seat, and then he pulled Daniel into a hug. The younger boy put his head in Alex's lap, whimpering slightly as the rain started to pick up. Alex put a hand on the smaller boy's shoulder. It was honestly quite adorable, but I couldn't help wonder how many other times Alex had had to hold his brother like that, through migraines, fighting parents, and anything else that might have hurt or frightened his little brother. By the time we entered Savanah, both boys were calm again, though Daniel had started to drift to sleep. Alex spent the next fifteen or so minutes pointing me one way or another and whispering directions from the backseat so as not to wake Daniel. By the time we rolled up to the trailer park, I could see the red house Alex had mentioned earlier and managed to find my way to the parking lot with the old bus. The sky had already started to darken even though it wasn't even two in the afternoon and I knew that the rain storm was only going to get worse from here as the first rumblings of thunder began to rumble off in the distance, despite my not being able to spot any lightning. I turned to Alex and whispered for him to stay in the car with his brother while I walked up to the apartment building. I was quickly stopped by two latino men who had been sitting on the porch in front of the only door. "Who are you, you ain't got no appointment today." The shorter of the two said in a threatening tone. I could see from a golden necklace he wore that his name was Luis. I would probably be a bad idea to try and use his first name though, didn't want him to think I was mocking him. "I'm here looking for my nephew Zack, his brothers said I could find him at Romeo's place." The taller of the two men stood back a bit, watching me. Luis seemed to be the type of guy that was chained in the yard to scare off people, but the taller man seemed like the one that actually held the leash, waiting to see if he should hold the dog back or let him go. "Ain't no Zack here, you must have been ill informed." Luis spat at me, pumping his chest out at me as if to tell me to back off. "He's talking about Easy Z, Luis. That's Alex over there in the car, see." The taller man pointed to my truck, two boys could be seen looking out the window at us. "Man, why you got to be no fun Julio? I was just trying to scare him a bit." Luis went to sit back down on the porch as Julio turned to spit into the yard before opening and disappearing behind the screen door leading into the apartment building. "Sit down holmes, we ain't gonna bite yeah, well, some of the girls might. But if you brought Easy Z's brothers, your cool." The Luis sat back into his lawn chair and picked up a Corona from beside him. It was quite clear I was to wait outside until someone inside invited me in. "So, the boys tell me Zack is the boyfriend of this Romeo guy." I started to speak as Luis cut me off. "Hey man, I ain't talking about none of Romeo's business, you got issues to speak to the boss himself." It was evident that the conversation was over after that, but Luis surprised me by asking. "I ain't ever heard about Easy Z having an uncle, where you been?" Luis was surprising casual having just met me, but I couldn't fault him for it. "The boys' mother and I haven't really seen eye to eye since before the boys were born. She dropped them off at my place just last night and then left. Alex and Daniel told me I could find Zack here and so here I am." I replied as I heard footsteps coming down the stairs from inside the apartments. "Right right, that bitch was a piece of work, I remember that much." Luis spoke as Julio returned to open the door and invite me inside. Luis waved a hand as if to dismiss the conversation as I turned to enter the building. Hopefully this wouldn't take to long and I could get Daniel home before his migraine got the best of us all. "Zack's busy helping one of the girls in the kitchen, but Romeo in the living room and wants to speak with you." Julio said calmly as he guided me up the stairs past a group of variously attractive women standing in the hallway. Most of the apartments were opened and I could hear various sounds of women and men engaged in various levels of pleasuring each other. This Romeo ran a whore house, my fourteen year old nephew lived in a whore house with his adult pimp boyfriend. I didn't want to have to call the police, but I knew if I found so much as a bruise on Zack I might just kill someone tonight. We entered into a larger apartment with loud music going in one of the rooms down the hall, there was a man sitting at a table next to the television watching my every move as an older, taller black man with long grey dreads stood up to shake my hand. As he introduced himself, I saw a glance of a young white boy moving from a bedroom to the bathroom down the hall carrying something with him. "My name is Remoe Love, but you can call me Daddy Love, all of my girls do." The older black man, mid fifties at least, spoke through puffs of cigar smoke as he turned his hand in mine ro reveal tattoos over his knuckles that read "LOVE," after a few attempts to see what his other hand said, I noticed it read "MAKE," together it would have read "Make Love." It was almost funny that the man had gotten that tattooed over his fists. "Dylan Streetman, Zack's uncle. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Love" I offered in return. Now, I wasn't scared of the man in front of me, but something about him both made me feel safe as well as nervous. He just had this kind of presence about him. Considering everything I'd seen so far, I guess Romeo was just a natural leader type. You didn't end up with oyur own whore house with bodyguards and what not if you didn't know a thing or two about the streets. "No, you can either call me Romeo, Love, or Daddy Love. Mr. Love was my mother." Romeo said with a wide grin. "Now, Zack's busy with one of the girls, a client decided he didn't feel like paying and beat her up pretty bad. Ain't none of us got a hand at healing the way that boy does." Romeo said as he sat down, pointing to the couch across from his seat for me to sit down as well. "That's fine, I just wanted to meet him. His brothers told me where he was and how his mother threw him out and I feared for the worse." I still did to be honest, though from what I was getting off of Romeo, he didn't seem like the type to hurt a kid. "Well, you can't have him if that's why you're here. Zack's my boy now and you might be blood but you ain't family." Romeo was obviously testing me, his tone had completely shifted as if he was trying to push me towards making a scene. "So long as he's safe Zack can stay wherever he wants. Like I said, I've never met him and I would like to." I countered, Romeo paused before cracking a smile, probably noticing my own shift in tone. "Agreed then. Would you care for a drink?" Romeo offered and I declined. Without missing a beat, the older black man called for Zack to come to the living room. The teenager I'd seen moment prior opened the bathroom and stepped out, cleaning blood off his hands with a washcloth. He was wearing a peach colored v-neck and black skinny jeans and black socks. His hair was long and curly but dyed a bluish black and his face was real pale, not sick, but almost like he didn't go outside much. I figured it was because he was a teenager and probably spent more time inside playing video games than playing in the yard. He had the same grey eyes I had, must have inherited them from his grandmother. The real surprise was what came out of his mouth. "Will you stop hollering old man? Charisa's beat up worse than I thought and I'm busy!" I was almost afraid Romeo might slap the boy, but as Zack threw the washcloth at the older black man playfully, I realized he'd only been jesting. "Honey, I'd like to introduce you to your Uncle, Dylan Streetman." Romeo countered with a hearty laugh as Zack went over to him and sat on the arm of Romeo's chair. The boy quickly did a once over of me before raising his eyebrows and sighing. "So I guess this means Momma finally did it. She get herself killed this time or just run off again?" Zack asked candidly before Romeo batted him on the rear in disapproval. "Child, that ain't no greeting." Romeo chastised the boy. Zack didn't even break eye contact or so much as reply to the man. "Where are Alex and Daniel? Are they in Black Creek? Please don't tell me you took them to Social Services." Zack was starting to get a little teary eyed and I could tell he was becoming angry. Romeo stopped commenting on the lack of a proper greeting as his own expression turned serious. "Your brothers are outside in the truck, Alex said they weren't allowed in here so I figured it'd be best to leave them be. Daniel's got bit of a migraine as well, I doubt he'd enjoy the music in here." Romeo grunted at that but Zack only looked sideways out towards the second floor patio deck attached to the apartment. "So Momma took the money and left you with the boys? I swear I knew that bitch would, I just figured she'd hold off until Daniel was older before she left for good." Zack stood and cracked his knuckles. Including myself, there were four men in the room and not one of us said a damn thing for fear Zack might try and hit us. He was seething with so much anger it was wonder he was able to talk so calmly. "Zack, I know we've never met but I want you to know that I'll take care of your brothers, and you if that's what you want. As far as I'm concerned, My house is as much as yours by birthright. As for your brothers, they'll be staying with me, you can stay here if that's what you'd prefer." Romeo met my eyes as I said that, but didn't comment on it. Zack seemed to notice the exchange between us and turned to Romeo. "Don't worry Love, I'm not going nowheres." Zack sat back down on the armrest before sliding into the chair next to the much older man. It didn't bother me or anything, I'd know other couples of similar ages in the past. Only thing that did bother me was that my nephew was living in a whore house. Regardless of whatever else Paul had done, he was right about one thing, technically speaking Romeo was a criminal and that meant Zack was in a dangerous environment. "No, go with your Uncle, at least for a few days. Your brothers need you and you should at least get a chance to meet your uncle properly. Now that your Momma's finally left he's your legal guardian, might as well get to know him." Both Zack and Romeo got quiet after that, as well as the rest of the room, but Romeo seemed to have read my mind because when he broke the silence, he shocked me by saying. "Zack is safe here, you don't have to worry about that. Ain't no man but me so much as touching him and if they do, I'll kill'em myself." Zack clung to his older lover after Romeo said that and it was clear to me that the man was telling the truth. "Don't take this the wrong way, Romeo, because I really don't take issue with your relationship with Zack, but considering the beaten woman in the bathroom, why should I take your word that Zack is safe here?" Zack just looked at me, almost terrified, the two other men in the room went still, but Romeo just laughed. "You're a good man Dylan, now I know I can trust you to keep my lover safe while he's away. You bring up a fair point, but I can't promise anymore than you. You could get hit by a drunk drive on the way back to wherever you live, and a crazed husband could show up shooting at any time. Life is full of surprises." Romeo kissed Zack on the neck, enticing a silent moan from the boy before he pushed Zack out of the chair and sent him down the hall to get his things. As we waited for Zack to finish getting ready, the woman in the bathroom stepped out and left the apartment most likely to go back to whichever part of the building she lived in. Romeo asked the two guys to step out so he could speak to me alone and before I knew it, Romeo had pulled out a photo album and was showing me pictures of himself and various other people he'd known over the years. Romeo, as I quickly learned, was from New Orleans and had lived there up till the 90's. He showed me pictures of himself from when he was a kid, the area he grew up in, as well as a lot of photos of him at various clubs and parties. I kept noticing another man who was a recurring face and when I asked about him, Romeo simply sighed and told me the sad story of his first love. They'd met each other way back in 1968, his name had been Charlie, but I soon found out that Charlie had grown up to be a full time drag queen named Foxxy Roxxy. Romeo had only been thirteen at the time and Charlie had been nine but Romeo swore to me they'd fallen in love at first sight and became inseparable. He went on to show me pictures of himself and Charlie from when they were teenagers, he had one of Charlie's first time performing in drag at the age of fifteen, as well as many more of the two of them over the years. The last dozen or so pictures told a far less happy story. Romeo and Charlie had been partners for 38 years before the later died during the AIDS epidemic. I'd been born late enough that I'd missed most of the fear and confusion from that time myself, but Romeo showed me pictures of dozens of people he'd known who had died during the 80's and early 90's from the disease. We'd been talking for a good twenty minutes when a knock on the door came before it opened to reveal Alex standing in the hallway, panic written on his face. Both Romeo and I stood up instantly, as we both knew something had happened. Zack walked into the room carrying a pillow, blanket, and a backpack just as Alex looked at me and screamed. "Daniel won't stop screaming!" Alex yelled, clearly pissed off at me for forgetting but also slightly panicked because his brother was in pain. I had completely forgotten about Daniel's migraine. Romeo grabbed Zack's stuff and both boys took off running after me because I was already halfway out the front door of the building by the time they hit the stairs. "Move, move!" I screamed at the three women and Luis who were crowding around my truck as Daniel lay in the back seat, hands around his ears and screaming at the top of his lungs. I started to wipe away some of his tears so I could see his eyes when the boy snapped at me. "Where were you, you said you'd be right back!" I couldn't say anything, it was all I could do not to start crying in shame myself. The storm had only gotten worse since I'd left the boys in the truck and Daniel must have been in so much pain. Before I knew what was happening, Zack as slipped under my leg into the backseat and was already cradling his youngest brother, attempting to calm him down. "Daniel, I'm so sorry." I started to say as I got choked up. Children suffering was the one thing I couldn't handle very well, my heart broke twice as much knowing he'd been out here suffering even more while I had forgotten him. "Just drive home." Alex said, climbing into the backseat through the door on the other side of the truck. Zack shot me a worried look as Daniel lay whimpering in his arms. "Go, it'll be okay, and good luck dealing with three boys for the next few days." Romeo offered me, tossing Zack's things into the front seat before closing the door again. With a wave to Zack, he turned around and ushered the small crowd back to the building and out of the rain. It didn't take very long for me to find my way back to the street we'd used to dive most of the way into the city, and now that I knew where I was going, we were back on the road within ten minutes and in another twenty-five, we'd be pulling up to my house again. Still, despite the darkness from the cloud cover, it was only a quarter till three o'clock in the afternoon. For the most part, the drive back to the house was silent, both Alex and Zack held onto their younger brother while I hurled the truck through the rain down the roadway. I made the effort not to get pulled over, but I kept nudging that speed limit as closely as I could. Luckily, Daniel had managed to drift off to sleep again, though every clap of thunder startled him awake again and again as his tears continued on through the little amount of relief that sleeping could provide. Once we arrived back to my place, the clouds were beginning to show the end of the storm and the rain had lightened up. Still, as Zack and Alex carried the older's stuff into the house, I carried my youngest nephew in my arms as he held onto my chest, grasping for some measure of comfort. No one said anything as I shifted Daniel in my arms and attempted to dig my keys out of my pocket only to drop them on the mat. "Which key?" Alex asked as he picked up the bunch of them. I point to the one with the blue grib and he quickly opened the door. I left Zack and Alex whispering in the front foyer as I took Daniel to the bathroom and began running him a warm shower. Daniel had woken up but was just sitting there with his back against the sink counter watching me as I moved around the bathroom. Before long, he sluggishly helped me as I made to undress him. He raised his arms so I could pull of his shirt, stood up, grasping my arm as he wobbled dizzily and kicked off his shoes while I pulled off his socks and shorts. I picked up up and pulled of his underwear in one fluid motion before sitting him in the shower so the water could run over him. Sarah had always been one to have migraines when it rained as well, it was a family thing I just hadn't inherited. Our aunt had always made her take a shower whenever she had a migraine, and as far as I knew, Sarah had always felt better after them, even if the migraine persisted. I sat there in the bathroom floor, listening to Daniel sob quietly every time the thunder roared again. I felt helpless, there was nothing more I could do then this to help the small child through the pain. I'd gotten lost in my thoughts because one moment I was listening to Daniel crying, and the next Zack was kneeling in front of me waving his hand in front of my face. "Uncle Dylan, you there?" He said, concern in his voice. "What? Sorry, I just feel a little lost." I answered. Daniel had stopped crying now, though he was still sitting in the shower in silence, occasionally moving so I knew he was still awake. "Here, pajamas for Daniel. They'll be a little big because they're mine, but Alex said something about eating ice cream in pajamas so here you are." Zach tossed the clothes into my lap and then leaned in closer to whip a few tears off my cheeks. I held my breath as I just looked at him, he really did have a caring touch to him, or a healing hand as Romeo had put it. It was almost uncanny the way I saw myself in his eyes, we even had the same shade of grey that turned silver in moonlight, and he was just as pale as I was. Sarah had always been the one to favor our Cherokee blood. "Thanks, Zack." I mumbled as he stood up and looked down at me. "You okay Dylan? I mean I know Daniel's in pain but for a second there it looked like you were somewhere else." I looked away from him as he said that. I didn't think I was ready to tell the boys about all of that. "Your mom had similar migraines when she was younger, our Aunt would sit right here and just wait for the shower to make Sarah's head feel better. They wouldn't talk, but Deniece wouldn't leave your Momma's side until she was good and ready to come out of that shower." I offered in return, it was the truth but it was also a lie. Sarah and Aunt Deniece had done this many times, but that wasn't where my head had gone too. It was the way Daniel had been sobbing that caused my mind to drift to other memories. "Well, whatever it is I just wanted to thank you for letting me see this house again. Momma always told me stories about living here." Zack said, confusing me in the process. "See it again? Zack, you've never lived here." I commented questionly. "Well no, but when I was seven, Momma drove us out here one day. She wanted to see you cause her boyfriend at the time had run off and Daniel had just been born a few months before that. You weren't here though, the house was empty." Zack said, a hint of disappointment in his voice. "Seven? I would have been nineteen, I had already joined the Marines by then. Would have been in Iraq at the time." I told him. It was a surprise to find out that Sarah had brought the boys here looking for a home, the idea of it actually made my heart twist into a knot a little bit. If I hadn't joined the military, I would have met my nephews years ago, perhaps even reconciled with Sarah before she'd met Paul. "Is that what you were thinking about? Romeo told me that he'd had a few friends who'd been in the military, messed with their heads and whatnot." Zack pivoted, watching me. "Yes and no, I was remembering a similar situation as now that I'd experienced with someone over there." I spoke slightly dazed. There was no way I could tell Zack the full truth, at least not with Daniel listening, but I'd long since learned how to talk about what I'd been through without mentioning the horrible details. "I didn't know it rained in the desert." Daniel threw into the conversation as he turned the shower off and stood up. I didn't say anything as I stood up as well, towell already in hand as I waited to help dry off Daniel once he stepped out of the shower. I froze for a few seconds once Zack responded to Daniel for me, but I didn't say anything, only sharing a look with the older boy before returning my attention to drying off Daniel. "Not water, Daniel. In the desert, it rains bullets." Zack said. To Be Continued...
