"Popa you cant eat more cake you got the sugar." "I got it for you." "For me?" I can see his dad years ago saying the same thing putting his hand to his chest. Like its a huge surprise. "Yes for you." "Is it OK? I mean I don't want to be a piggy." "If I say its OK. Then its OK if one of my favorite boys has too much cake on my birthday." "Thanks." He says and takes the plate. I sit back down and take a drink of tea. I slowly rock back and forth and run my fingers up Little Timmy's back. "I love you Popa. "I love you to Tim" Popa." I respond making him giggle. I can see in my mind the cake crumbs flying from his mouth. Who cares anymore. When he is done with his cake he takes his plate in and comes back to my lap. "Popa. Tell me about George.": To this I start laughing. "You want to hear about George?" He is bouncing on my lap and saying yes over and over again. Only small children can sound this excited. "All right. Well, at first George and I well..." The years melted away as I began telling my little buddy about George. The boys had moved in with me into the mansion as I just felt better about them being around an adult. Not that Terry was doing a bad job. He is actually doing a great job. He is teaching them to be polite and to be respectful of others. But, boys need more then just that. That and I worried they might get some bad food again. This way I can keep their nutrition in check. Apparently vegetables were not a requirement in their diet. But, when you get what you can find. Well, it is what it is. As people say when your screwed and have no choice in the matter. Got to pay my taxes. Well, it is what it is. I'm going blind from diabetes. It is what it is. I hate that saying. But, Well, it is what it is. We had settled in on a routine of sorts. In the morning the older boys would help me and the younger boys would leave the work crews alone. At least thatā¹ is the goal of it. But, little boys are just drawn to work crews. Its just a fact. "I'm Timmy. Whats your name?" "I'm Mark." "What do you do Mark?" "I'm an electrician. Step off the wire please." He says to Timmy who is standing on the wire he is trying to feed through the wall. "Oh Sorry." He says and steps off. "I'm 6. How old are you?" "Look kid I got work to do. You seem nice and all. But, really, I got to concentrate on this." "Sure Mark the lectrician." Timmy says and starts messing with his tools. "Leave those alone buddy." "Why?" "Because they aren't yours is why." "Kay. Why did you want to be a lectrician?" "I guess because my dad was one. I learned it from him." Mark says trying to work. Timmy is in his way every time he turns around. He nearly falls once. "Look buddy. I know your probably a nice kid and all. But, please go somewhere else." He half begs Timmy. "But, I like you. You seem real nice. You got kids?" "No I don't have kids." He says as he stumbles over Timmy again. "Please go bother someone else." He asks pleading. "Maybe I want to be a lectrician. I might have portant questions for you." "Go sit down somewhere away from me and think about it. Write them down. Then come back when I'm on lunch and ask." "That wont work." "Why in pray tell not?" Poor Mark says after he trips over Timmy for the tenth time probably. "Cant write." "You can remember it then." "Nah better if I stay here and ask when I get the question in my head." "Oh boy." Mark mumbles. "How you become a lectrician?" "There are lots of ways. You can go through the union program like I did. You can go to schoo....." Mark starts to say as he turns and trips and this time falls over Timmy. When he falls he hits the board on the saw horse he is using as a table and everything flies. When he hits the ground he is seeing red. "Kid are you leaving or not?" He asks at his wits end. "No I think you need my help. You just knocked everything on the floor. I better help pick it up." Mark sees a roll of duct tape next to him. He grabs it and then Timmy. He grabs him up and duct tapes Timmy's hands around the banister. "If you ain't leaving at least I will know where you are this way." Timmy laughs at him. "This is fun." He says wiggling his fingers on his now bound hands. "Oh brother." Mark sighs. Mark gets back to work and Timmy keeps chattering on. But, at least he isn't in his way. Mark does really like him. He is a smart boy and does ask really good questions. But, its much better now that he is not under foot. They have a steady stream of conversation until nearly lunch. About that time Danny walks around the corner to check on the progress. He sees Timmy bound to the banister. "Let me guess. He was under foot and you kept tripping over him?" "Yeah I'm real sorry Mr Day. But, I just couldn't...." "No reason to explain. Trust me. I may have to start carrying duct tape with me." He says laughing. Timmy says this fun we're playing prisoner Timmy says Danny Mark is my new best friend I like this game Mark says wait a minute you can't do that they look at Mark confused Mark says you have to refer to older people by their proper title you say mister Danny or Mister day you always refer to older people with respect Danny shakes his head and mutters under his breath. I never thought of that Mister Mark you're right I get in trouble for not having respect I think Mister is too formal Danny says to Timmy you have to come up with something to call me other than mr. Danny or mr. Day but I don't think it's right you call me daddy or Grandpa that would take away memories from them think of something that you'd like to call me and we'll work on "I came to find you and your brother for lunch. I'm guessing you have no idea where he is." "Nope. But, he said he was gonna look at the concrete getting poured." "Oh shit. He will have it everywhere." Danny says. "Lets get you untied here and go get lunch. I would tell you to leave the electrician alone. But, I know that will never happen. Once you get something in that cute little head of yours its there for good." Danny says lightly knocking his head with his knuckles. Danny unwraps the duct tape from Timmy and laughs as he put about six wraps around his wrists. Guess he really didn't want him going anywhere. They go to find Kenny and he is indeed with the concrete guys and they are pouring a foundation for the little shop he is planning. But, Kenny is anything but, in the way. He sees he has a broom and is walking it along the concrete. Well. Danny thinks. "Good job Kenny." The foreman says to him as he walks by and rubs his head making Kenny grin showing his straight white teeth. With his shaggy brown hair and green eyes he really is a breathtaking boy Dan thinks. "We came to get you for lunch. Can you get off work for it." Danny says half joking. "Not sure." He says and turns his head to the foremen. "Hey Larry can I go to lunch." "Sure but, you only get half an hour. So no drinking." "I'm not gonna drink.: He says giggling. "Alright. I will see you after lunch." He says and runs his fingers over his head again. "Your a good kid." "Thanks." Says Kenny eating up the praise. They walk off together and Danny puts his hands on the boys shoulders as they walk along. It feels nice. It feels like he is falling in love with them. He isn't really sure he has never really been in love with anyone. He was always busy with work. He had no time for that mess. Sure he has people he loves but, in love. A whole different ball park. The boys chatter about what they have been doing and Danny listens. "Yeah my new friend Mark. Hes a lectrician. He is teaching me all about lectricity." Danny thinks. Well, I am not sure Mark would consider you a friend. A pest yes. Friend maybe not. "Cool Larry is teaching me all about concrete. Its really super cool. I like it. Its fun. He let me use the broom on it. So it will be there for like ever. Something I did.> That's pretty cool I think." "Yeah it is." Timmy nods his head in agreement. "In like a batrillion years when a crologist digs it up it will be from you." "Um Timmy whats a crologist?" Danny asks. "You know like Indiana Jones. They dig old stuff up." "I think you mean archaeologist. "That's what I said. Crologist." Danny shakes his head and smiles. They get to the house and Danny has set out a buffet of sorts for the workers that are getting everything done. It has a large supply of lunch meat chips and bread. He also cut up some lettuce tomatoes onions. Whatever someone may want on their sandwiches. They all help themselves. Timmy starts to pile on the roast beef. "Don't be a piggy Timmy. Other people gotta eat too a know." Kenny chastises him. Timmy puts back about half a pound of roast beef. He had a lot. They finally get done at the table and go sit at a picnic table. One of several Danny rented for the crews to relax on. They join Larry and Terry who are already eating. "I see you found the terribles." "Yeah this one had the electrician so frazzled he had him bound to the banister." Danny says chuckling. Larry and Terry laugh. "Why didn't I ever think of that?" Terry says still laughing. "I have been thinking." Danny says as he sits down. "Yeah?" Terry asks.' "I know you boys cant go to regular school just yet. But, I feel its important for you to still learn. I think in the evenings we will have a little classroom time. So you can learn more and not be behind when we can get you back into school." "ah school is stupid." Terry says. "Terry I'm surprised at you. Saying that." "He just don't like it cuz he used to get picked on by this one boy." Larry says. "Nu uh." Terry responds. "Yes huh." Larry quickly adds back. "I will make you a deal Terry. If in the next 48 hours I cant show you in your life how school will help you then no school for you. But, the other boys have no choice. Especially the younger ones. Kenny can barely read and Timmy doesn't even know the alphabet. They need those things." "Yeah I guess they do. But, I done learned everything I need." Terry says puffing out his chest. "Except maybe proper grammar. Danny says. Terry rolls his eyes at him. Danny just smiles and takes a bite of his sandwich. They go back to their jobs as it were and Timmy goes back to where Mark is working. Mark has his back to him when he walks up. 'You gonna tie me up again?" Mark cringes when he hears a free Timmy. "You see that chair over there?" "Yeah." "If you promise to sit in it and not get out of it. I wont tape you up again. Deal?" "Deal." Timmy answers and goes and plops on the wooden chair. He does manage to keep his end of the bargain. For about ten minutes. Then he has his hands bound to the sides of the chair. "I was just trying to help." He says as Mark finishes taping him to the chair. "I know that's the problem. You are a good boy though." Mark says and rubs the top of Timmy's head mussing his hair. Timmy smiles at this. As Mark gets back to work he glances over and Timmy is chatting to him smiling away kicking his dangling feet back and forth. "Hey Mark." "Yeah little guy?" "I gotta pee." "I kinda gotta too." Mark cuts Timmy free and they head to the restroom. Timmy whips his out and starts peeing. Mark waits until he is done. Timmy puts himself back together and looks at Mark. "Thought you had to pee too?" "I figured I would wait until you leave." With this Timmy sits on the edge of the tub next to the toilet. Mark just shakes his head and unzips his fly and lets the water flow. "You got a big wanger." "Its normal for a man. When you get bigger yours will be bigger too." "You think so?" "Its a fact." "Can I touch it?" "No." "Danny has a big wanger too. He wont let me touch it either." "Your too little yet. You wouldn't understand." "Sure I do. You play with it and it feels real good." "OK Maybe you do understand. But, the answer is still no." "Kay." Timmy says kind of pouting. Later Danny finds Timmy surprisingly yet not bound to the chair. "Came to get him for dinner. You knocking off soon?" "As a matter of fact I am." "Would you like to join us for dinner?" "I would like to. But, I already have plans. But, please ask me another time. I kind of like this little guy. Even though he is under foot every time I turn around." Mark says running his fingers through Timmy's light blonde locks. Timmy looks up at the big man and smiles. "He is a smart boy that's for sure. He asks lots of really good questions." "He does at that. But, its better when he does it at a bit of a distance." Danny says laughing making Mark laugh too. That night Danny started a bit of school for the boys. The three youngest anyway. When they were going to bed Danny was tucking in the boys he heard a loud clash of thunder. Timmy sat up in bed and wrapped his arms around Danny. Trembling with fear. Before Timmy could say a word Danny says. "Yes." Like a shot he is out of his bed and racing to Danny's. "You want to join us too?" He asks Kenny. "Nah storms don't scare me none." He says and pulls the covers up and rolls on his side facing Danny. "If you change your mind. You know where I am." "Thanks. But, I will be OK." Danny smiles at him and turns off the light as he leaves the room and pulls the door to. He checks on Larry and Terry. He walks in and sees both boys are covered up to the waist their naked chests exposed. A lovely sight indeed, and it looks like Terry has wood and it looks like its pretty big too. He wishes he could see it hard. Maybe play with it and suck him. But, a boy must ask. At least that is Danny feelings on it. He does sit on each boys bed and give them a kiss on the forehead. "Good night guys. I am really glad you have come into my life. Its made it much better." "We feel the same way Danny." Larry says. "I'm glad of it too." He says rubbing his smooth chest. "That feels nice." Since Larry says he likes it he continues a few minutes. Danny can see Larry is drifting off to sleep. When his breathing is soft he stops and heads to his room. The light is off. But, that's OK he thinks. I need to get used to moving around without seeing anyway. He gets undressed and slips into bed. He feels Timmy on the pillow sleeping already. He stretches out a little and feels something very furry and very wet with his foot. "Jesus Christ!" He shouts out and grabs Timmy and hops from the bed and flicks on the lights. He sees a lump in the bed, and he flips back the covers. "Holy shit!" He screams as he sees two beady eyes staring at him. "Whats going on?" Timmy asks sleepily. "There's a rodent in the bed." He says. "I better get a broom or something to shoo it out of the house." "That's not a rodent. Its George silly." Timmy chirps. All the boys heard the commotion and are in the door way looking at a very wet and dirty raccoon in Danny's. bed. "Why is there a rodent in my bed?" "Hi George. This is Danny. I told you bout him. He is real nice." With that Danny swears the raccoon waved hello to him. He felt like an idiot when he started to wave back and stopped himself. "YOU haven't answered my question. Why is I guess George in my bed?" "Cuz its storming silly and George is scared of storms." Danny looks at the boy and then at the raccoon who he swears nods agreement. "I don't care. Raccoons don't belong in the house. Put George outside." Tears start to well up in Timmy's eyes. "Please Popa he is scared. He does good things for us. Like killing the bad mice." Danny ponders this. Are there good mice. "You can cry all you want. But, he is going outside." Danny says. As he does he looks at the boys. He can see a kind of pleading in their eyes. "Please Popa hes my friend. I ain't got many just you and Mark the lectrician. Me and George been buddies a long time. So please." He asks through tears. "Jaysus H. Christ. Fine he can sleep in the kitchen. But, I swear the first time I find raccoon poo anywhere out he goes." Timmy's frown instantly turns to a grin. George is up on is back legs looking like he is clapping. "An you don't have to worry bout him pooping in the house. I showed him where to poop in the bathroom." Danny rolls his eyes and shakes his head. "Fine get him out of my bed so I can change it. If he is staying. We have to take him to the vet tomorrow to make sure he isn't rabid or sick or anything. I don't know. I never even owned a dog. What do I do for a raccoon." He says not expecting any response. Danny puts Timmy down. "Come on George you heard Popa gotsta stay in the kitchen." Until you go to the doctor that's not what I said it's bad enough I have to wake up with a drooling humping boy humping me like a puppy I'm not waking up with a rodent in my bed to With that George hops of the bed. Timmy and George walk between his brothers and downstairs. Danny just shakes his head. "He has always had a way with animals. Its weird. Its like he can understand them." "Ah like Dr Doolittle." "Who?" Larry asks. "Glad you asked that. It will be your reading assignment now." Larry groans, "Don't worry you will like it. I did when I read it." As Danny is talking to the boys he changes the wet and muddy sheets. He grabs a box from the corner and puts them in it. He walks to the kitchen and hears Timmy talking. "Sure he likes you. He just don't know you yet." Timmy says to George who appears to be listening intently to him. "I figured he would want to sleep on something soft. I figure these sheets are ruined. So I put them in a box for him." "See George I told you." Timmy says smiling. He wraps his arms around the raccoon for a hug. Danny sniffs the air. "George you really stink. I think a bath is in order before anything else. Timmy since you been hugging him you get one too." "Can we take a bath together?" Timmy asks excited and George looks with anticipation. Danny rolls his eyes again. "Why not." Timmy and George race back upstairs to the bathroom they have been using and he hears the water running as he walks up the stairs. He hears Timmy talking to George. "Now you heard Popa no pooping in the house cept where I showed you. Otherwise he gonna kick you out. Then you will be all alone again, and sad." He hears the raccoon kind of chirp in response. He shakes his head. I have gone mad. I'm running a circus and I have lots of monkeys. Now a raccoon to boot. He washes the raccoon and Timmy. He changes the water twice because George was filthy and dirty water means dirty boy and dirty raccoon. He heads back to bed after Timmy tucks in George and looks at the time. Its 3am. He thinks. that never in his wildest dreams would he ever have imagined at 3am one day he would be bathing a six year old boy and a raccoon. At any hour for that matter. "So Popa that when you first met George?" "Yes." "Daddy said you were not real happy about George at first." "Lets just say I was less then thrilled. But, he grew on me over time." "Daddy said when George died you cried a long time." "I did. George had become my friend of sorts. When I lost my sight completely he would help me with things. Get me things. He wasn't your average raccoon that one. He was special. Want me to tell you more?" "Oh yes grandpa." "Alright. What do you want to hear about next?" "Tell me about Uncle Doug." "Alright then." I say rocking slowly and thinking back.
