You need to pee or anything before I get started?" "No grandpa. Tell me bout uncle Doug." "Alright I guess I will begin with your uncle Doug's past. That will explain more how he became a big part of our lives." "Cuz he isn't really my uncle. But, we love him like he is right?" "Right." So I turn the time machine of my mind on and Danny is back in the office some years before. "Yeah my nephew Doug got accepted to Stanford for business school. I have no idea how we are going to pay for it . I mean I saved some. But, Stanford is pretty expensive for out of state students." "Why don't I start a scholarship program for disadvantaged youth. That way its a triple win." "Triple win?" "Sure. Someone deserving gets a good education. I get to do the right thing. Then its tax deductible. "That's actually a great idea." "Sure it is, and we will be helping deserving youth that otherwise wouldn't have the chance. As they say a mind is a terrible thing to waste. "Yes sir." So we fast forward several years to when Doug first arrives on the job for the first time. After he has graduated college and started at another company he didn't really care for. He wanted to work for someone with a heart. Not a huge corporation that's only goal is creating more revenue. Granted revenue is important. But, the workers matter too. He pulls up to the mansion. AKA the job site in his fifteen year old Honda. He gets out and looks at it. He has been thinking about getting a new one since he has graduated. But, he looks at it. Sure its seen better days. But, its still in pretty good shape and the miles aren't too bad. At least for a Honda. So no he decides on the new car. He isn't trying to impress anyone. He walks into the house and the first thing he sees is a boy duct taped to a chair chattering away to a man working on the electric wiring. What have I gotten myself into? He thinks. "Um Has anyone seen Mr Day?" "Sure he is upstairs in the bathroom I think." The electrician says. "Yeah he is. George got jelly all over his self and Danny said he ain't having it. So he is giving him a bath." He turns hesitantly and starts slowly walking up the stairs. Now Doug had met Danny a few times. But, he really only knows him from his uncle telling him about him. He gets to the bathrooms and he sees Danny leaning over the tub. "Now I have told you to stay out of things that you don't belong in, and in this house that is everything. Now look you got jelly all over yourself and the kitchen. I tell the boys make sure you put the lids on tight to prevent this. But, does anyone listen? No. So here I am giving you a bath in the middle of the morning. When I have forty other things I need to do." Doug hears an odd chattering he is unfamiliar with. "Ah bullshit. You knew better and you did it anyway. I don't want to hear any of your guff pal." "Mr Day?" Danny turns his³ head back. "Ah Doug. So good to see you. Can you hand me that towel there?" He says pointing. "⁴Sure." Doug says and hands it to Danny. "Sir are you aware their is a young boy duct taped to a chair downstairs?" "No. But, I bet Timmy got in Marks way again. He has a tendency to do that. He is a good boy. But, somehow always just under foot." Danny says as he lifts George from the tub and is drying him off. 'Sir is that a Raccoon?" "Yes this is George. He joined our little I guess family of sorts a couple weeks ago." "Is it safe?" "Sure. We had George here checked at the vet. He is in tip top shape. Got shots and everything. Didn't you George?" Doug cocks his head as he watches the raccoon nod yes. He didn't just see that he thinks. Danny finishes drying the raccoon and he pats him on the head. "Now stay out of things." George scurries off and Danny gets up from his squatting position. "Welcome to my circus. I got lots of monkeys and a raccoon to boot." Danny says smiling. "It does seem a bit out of sorts today." "Doug you will learn this is every day. Its chaos. But, its a good kind of chaos." "You certainly seem happy." "I really am. You have no idea. The project is going along great. the boys were a surprise. But, a really pleasant one. So let me show you around." Danny says putting a hand on Doug's shoulder and guiding him around the mansion showing him its highlights and explains what he wants to do with it. Then he takes him to the apartment over the garage he and the boys are moving into today so that the real demolition and construction at the mansion can begin. They are basically taking it to the bones and redoing everything. They walk through the back lawn now. As a crew had come through and bulldozed all the brush down just leaving the trees. They walk over to where they are putting in the first set of buildings. They come up to Larry in a trench laying in masonry blocks at a pretty good pace. He puts a block down . Uses the trowel. Slaps some mortar on it and puts another block in place. "Hey Popa" Larry smiles up at him when he sees him approach. "Learning this now huh?" "Yep. They let me run the trencher a little while this morning. It was so cool." He says beaming. "I bet it was. Wish I could have done it too." Danny says really wishing he could have. Looks kind of fun. Larry this is Doug. He is the project manager now." "Cool." Larry says and starts back to laying blocks. Doug and Danny walk away to see another part of the project. "Is it safe for him to be doing that. What is he like 7?" "Kenny is nine and yes. He is really kind of a prodigy in construction. All the guys just love him and will take the time to show him anything they are doing. Because they know he will catch on quick and be helping them and make their job easier. Hell they all pay him out of their own pockets." Danny thinks a second and says. You know he makes about as much as you." Danny says poking Doug in the tummy, and smiles. "So you trust his work." "Look Doug going blind has opened my eyes to a lot of things I didn't see before. One thing is don't rule out someone doing something well because of age. Take for instance his older brother Terry. He is fourteen years old. He is amazing in the kitchen. He can make your tongue jump out of your mouth slap you in the head for not eating something he made before. At fourteen he is better then most of the chefs in this suburb or City" "Sir that's not saying much we live in a small suburb." "True. But, he is still pretty damn good." "Now sir about this idea you have for making the block in front of your house into a park. I think we can use that land for something more productive." "No. It will be a park. Children need somewhere to play. So they can run, jump and be with friends. Not to mention make new ones. No it will be a park. Besides I want a park there. So I can sit on the porch and listen to the children play. There is no greater sound then happy children. When I do lose my sight. I want to make sure I can always hear that." "So a park it is." Doug says. Now I have all the plans and everything in the kitchen. We have had to make some changes here and there. So lets say we go look over them." "Yes sir." They head to the dining room and are leaning over the massive cherry table looking at the plans when George scurries in and climbs up in a high chair that matches the dining room suit. Funny Doug thought I never noticed it before. He starts chattering away and waving is arms. "Did you hear my alarm? I didn't hear my alarm." Danny says to George. George nods yes. "No you didn't. We don't lie around here." Danny looks at the time on his phone. "Its five minutes. Besides how can you be hungry after eating a big jar of strawberry jam?" George looks at him with his little black eyes and twitches his whiskers at him. "What you think I forgot. I'm still wet from giving you a bath. Are you kidding me." "I think that tonight as punishment you wont get a snack while we are watching a movie." George puts his head on his chest and looks at Danny like he is begging forgiveness. "We will see." Georges ears twitch and he lifts his head and nods yes. "Maybe. Now leave me alone so Doug and I can get back to this." George looks at the ceiling like what me. I never bother anyone. I'm just sitting here. Doug looks at Danny with a look like. What the hell is that about. So Danny answers quickly. "The boys are not allowed snacks between meals. Because Timmy and Kenny kind of overdo it a bit. I juat want to get them on a proper eating routine. But, George he keeps getting into everything." Danny say showing his teeth and hissing at George. George just smiles at him. As Danny is explaining his phones alarm went off. George looks at him and raises his paws as if. Well. "Shut up George. Cone on Doug you can help me out as we continue talking." "Sure." Doug says unsure of exactly what he will be doing. But he gets up and Danny opens the full sized restaurant fridge they put in the other day. He takes out a few containers of potato salad and some macaroni salad. He then pours them into big bowls. He pulls out several pounds of lunch meat and starts to lay it on a tray. He then grabs a few packages of different cheeses and puts them on another plate. He slices three heads of lettuce and at least a dozen tomatoes setting them in their own bowls. He makes a plate with a sandwich some macaroni and potato salad and sits it in front of George. When he does George chatters. "Your welcome. Now lets see if you can eat more of it then you wear this time." George looks at him and very daintily lifts the sandwich. "Yeah it wont last." Danny says grabbing the tray with lunch meat on it. "Grab something and follow me." Doug grabs two bowls of the sandwich toppings, and follows. They get it all out and set on what has become the serving table. "Ah crap I got to go untie Timmy for lunch. "No you don't. I'm right here." He says turning to see the boy right behind him. "So Mark let you free?" "Just for lunch. He says we will see how it goes after that." "You now how its going to go." Timmy giggles. "I cant help it. Its so neat what he is doing." "You can help it. You choose not to." "If you say so." Timmy says and goes and gets his lunch. "So you feed the entire crew every day?" "Except Friday. We have a pot luck. You would be surprised how good these guys can cook. They are funny. They tease each other saying their wives made it for them. The guys really take offense to that sometimes. One guy named Doug like yourself went to Canada a few months ago and went bear hunting. He got one and brought in some Bear BQ.' "What is that?" "Its what it sounds like. Its bear that's barbecued. Its really amazing. I hope he brings it again." Larry walks up. "Hi Popa can I sit with you guys for lunch?" "Sure its nice to have a working man sit with me." Danny says tickling Larry's belly, making him giggle. "Cool." "As I was saying Mark the electrician. Makes the best brisquit I have ever had. I swear it melts in your mouth. Some of the guys here are really good cooks." "It seems like you haven't created a project. But, a family." Danny tilts his head a bit thinking. "In a way sure. Its just better this way. Everyone is happy and its fun to work with all the crews. They are enjoying their work as am I. That and everyone really enjoys having the boys around. They add a lot of life to the day." Danny sees a guy. "Hey Jim you making that cheesecake again?" "You know I can make more then cheesecake." "Yeah but, its so damn good." "My wife says the same thing." He says smiling. "He makes the best blueberry cheese cake you ever had. I am not a fan of people putting things in or on cheesecake. But, its just like a little taste of heaven in every bite." "I will have to try it then," "You better, and better get it quick. It disapears fast." Doug and Danny head to the office Danny has set up in the apartment after they eat. They go over several different things Danny wants done. How he wants it and so on and so forth. It takes them the rest of the day to go over all the details. Its pushing nearly six when Danny looks at his phone. "Its almost dinner. Would you care to join us?" At this Doug's stomach rumbles. "Whatever you are having is better then what I had planned on." "What were you planning on?" "A cup of Ramen." "that's not food. I keep telling the boys it ought to say something when George wont eat it. But, they insist they like it. Timmy was walking around with just a block of it one day uncooked. That's when I said no more snacks." "Ew gross." "Io thought so. My god they are bad enough cooked." "I like them." "You are entitled to your opinion even if its wrong. Now I wonder what Kenny made?" Danny says and they walk from the garage apartment to the kitchens door at the mansion. When they walk in Doug is overtaken by the amazing aromas wafting through the air. "It smells amazing. What is it?" He asks Kenny. "Don't know. Just something I thought would be good all thrown together." Kenny says. "Doug this is Kenny by the way. He is the oldest of the boys. He is 14 and thinks he is 30. But, he is a great young man and has been doing a fantastic job with these heathens he calls brothers." "I ain't no heathen." Timmy says sitting at the table waiting somewhat patiently. "Do you even know what a heathen is?" "Nope but, I ain't one. I'm a boy." "There is no doubt about that. Now over here is Kenny" Kenny looks up from the Dr Doolittle book he is now engrossed in. "Hi I'm Kenny He says extending his hand. "I'm Doug." Larry looks at Doug and smiles then proceeds to look at his package. Without trying to hide it or any shame. Doug is kind of taken that a 8 year old boy is checking him out. Also he is kind of turned on by it too. He is gay but, never really thought about a boy his age since he was a boy that age. Doug sits down and Kenny goes back to his book. "I'm starving!" Timmy half shouts. "When we gonna eat?" "Don't be a piggy." Kenny says slapping him lightly on the back of the head. George starts chattering and lifting his fork and spoon. "In a minute George. Jeez you try to make something good and all you guys would be happy with a bologna sandwich." "I like bologna." Timmy says making Terry roll his eyes and shake his head letting out a long Irish sigh. Terry makes some finishing touches on the meal and puts it on the table. He grabs some tortillas and puts them on the table as well. He shows everyone its like a fajita and they all proceed to make theirs. Danny makes some for George and he starts eating immediately. Danny smiles at him and rubs between his ears. George looks up a piece of chicken hanging out of his mouth and smiles at Danny. Danny returns the smile. Doug takes a bite. "Wow this is really amazing." "Yeah I just sliced some chicken into strips cut up some onions and bell peppers. Added a jalapeno for a little kick and cooked it in apple juice." "Well, its amazing that is for sure." Doug says taking another bite But, much larger then the first. ""Yeah Terry can cook good." Timmy says. "He can cook well." Larry says correcting him. "That's what I said. He cooks good." Larry just sighs and goes back to his dinner. When they are all so bloated they can barely get up Terry says. "I made some banana pudding for desert." Danny rubs his tummy as does Doug. "I cant possibly eat another bite for at least ten years." Danny says. "Your silly. You would die." Timmy says giggling. "I want some nanner puddin." "We knew you would piggy." Terry says. "I'm not a piggy." "No he is a growing boy." Danny says defending him. He wants them to eat properly. But, also wants them to eat enough. But, not too much. With boys that have gone without for so long. They sometimes tend to overdo it. Timmy is dancing on his butt in the chair. Holding a spoon aloft singing. "Nanner puddin. I'm gonna eat some nanner puddin. I love me some nanner puddin." They all the boys that is had some pudding and Doug stayed a little while longer to help with the clean up. Its only right to help after getting such an excellent meal. Once he leaves he gets back into his car and thinks. He is absolutely right. It is chaos. But its a good kind of chaos. "I think its funny the lectrician kept tying up daddy." Little Timmy says snapping Danny back to the present day. "Well, Mark was a patient guy. But, your daddy had a way of always being right where you needed to be. So Mark found a cure for that." "You ever tie daddy up?" "No but, I sure thought about it a lot." Little Timmy giggles. "Tell me more pleeeeease." He says begging to Danny. "Alright. What do you want to hear about now?" "Hm How about......"
