Boy From The Shed - Chapter 13

Monday morning Mike was up and out before the rest of the family had gotten
out of bed. Leo fed and bathed the boys before sending them happily off to
school. Leo mentioned to them to keep an eye out for Max as he was in the
year below them at their school. Today was Leo's first day working in the
new office. He had more room in there and started to wish he had moved out
into a garden office a long time ago. He worked hard all day trying to
catch up on his work and started bringing in a few more contracts. It would
be a few weeks till Martin finished his old job but this way they would
have work ready to go when Martin started.

Also during the day he checked in with Susan next door to make sure she was
OK, which she was, then later called Helen to have her come over for dinner
on Tuesday and see when she wanted Tanner to visit her house. She explained
that she was working evenings all this week so would not be able to have
Tanner over till next week. Leo agreed to do dinner earlier tomorrow so she
could get to work on time. She would arrive just after school and spend a
couple of hours with Tanner and the family. The rest of the day passed as
normal, ending with the boys in their dads bed just snuggled up and
sleeping.

Tuesday after school Helen arrived and spent time with Tanner, she was
amazed to see how happy her son was, she missed him sometimes but she now
had the freedom she craved and she could work the shifts she wanted to.
After dinner Helen headed off to work and things went on as normal, Tanner
loved his mum but was far happier with his new family.

While the boys watched a movie in the evening Leo and Mike talked about
Christmas upstairs in the bedroom so the boys wouldn't hear, the decided on
mountain bikes for the boys main presents and a few more games for the
Wii. They thought about a bike for Max as well so Leo was going to check
with Martin to make sure that was OK. By the time Mike and Leo finished
their Christmas planning the boys were asleep downstairs. They were carried
up and placed gently in their own bed, this was made easier because of
course they were already naked. Mike and Leo went to their room and had

Wednesday Mike was off to work and Leo went to wake the boys up. Jacob was
spooning behind Tanner, Leo lifted the duvet to wake them up and found that

new office to talk.

the first time he had shared with anyone... and well... I know that shy

it's OK with me, I just figured that you may already know and would be
worried in case I found out"

"OK... yes we knew about the boys... we saw them in the bath playing with

Leo breathed an internal sigh of relief, once again his best friend had

concerned about his wife though.

"I've already talked to them about like consent and stuff, they all
understand...we'd never let them get hurt, any of them"

"i know you wouldn't little man, that's why I trust you. So just keep an
eye on them and we're all good"

"cool... I'm glad you know and are OK with it... but what about the
Janice?"

"it would be best if she didn't know... she's a bit... churchy and stuff"

"OK" Leo said

"come here little man" Martin said as he stood up and opened his arms to
Leo, Leo stood and fell into Martin's embrace. Leo felt Martin hug him

his friend was crying.

"hey... what's up... why the tears?" he asked Martin looking him in the
face. Martin eventually looked up at Leo

"I'm happy that Max can express himself... you know with your boys fooling
around and stuff... but I'm sad and frustrated that I never got the chance"
Martin said while crying

"what do you mean?" Leo said as he wiped away Martin's tears lovingly with
his hands

"oh Leo....... I love my wife.... but I've always wanted what Mike has"
Martin forced out through the tears

"what Mike has?" Leo asked, Martin looked into Leo's eyes

"you"

"me?" Leo gasped

"yeah...you... always, since we first met... but I had Janice and
Max... you had Mike" Martin cried harder as the friends stood holding each
other in the office

"why didn't you say something sooner" Leo asked gently

"i don't know... I was scared it would affect our friendship and stuff... I
love you too much to risk that"

"OK... so why now?" Leo asked while stroking his friend hair

"i think because Max, Tanner and Jacob are doing the things I want to do
and it just brought it all up for me again... I want my son to be happy in
a way I never have been" Martin said more tears flowing from his eyes.

"i can understand that" Leo replied

"we are still good aren't we Leo... I couldn't stand to lose you as a
friend?" Martin said with worry in his voice

"of course were good, you are my best friend, your an older brother to me
and I love you deeply..."

"thanks..."

"that's OK... you feel better now" Leo asked as the tears stopped

"yeah... I'm glad I finally told you... it was a lot to keep inside all
these years"

"i bet it was...you and me will always be brothers and I love you... a
lot...OK?"

"yeah OK" Martin said meekly

"cool... so just to double check everything, were letting the boys do
whatever they want with each other and you have always loved me?" Leo said
giggling at Martin who started to smile back.

"yeah... that about sums it up" Martin joked back.

"and I'm good to tell Mike it all as well?" Leo asked

"of course... I love him too... but I love you a little more" Martin said
shyly

"he loves you too, so no more worries we are all good and if you ever want
to talk about this stuff then we are both here for you OK?"

"thanks Leo, I can't tell you how much it means to me to have you and Mike
in my life"

"same here Martin, you mean a lot to us... as does Max"

Martin pulled Leo back in for a final hug as he got his emotions under
control.

"speaking of Max... could you and Mike have him over again this weekend, he
won't be happy at home on his own and I really want him to be happy"

"of course he can stay over, like you he is welcome anytime"

"thanks little man"

Martin and Leo made arrangements for Max to stay over Saturday night like
last weekend and then Martin left to go back to work. He was happier than
he had been in a long time having finally opened up to Leo and got a lot of
worries off his chest. Leo was surprised by what Martin had told him, but
it didn't change the way he felt about his friend, he loved him and always
would.

When the boys got home they were excited to find out that Max was staying
again on Saturday and Leo told them that Martin knows about the boys
fooling around together and that he is happy for them to do it. Jacob and
Tanner were both happy that Martin was OK with them playing around with
Max, but Leo told them Max's mum is not to find out and if they ever stay
over at Max's house they can't risk doing things in case they get caught by
Max's mum. They both agreed and Jacob clarified

"we can do stuff with Martin around though?"

"yes... but just you boys, not with Me or Mike... Martin doesn't know about
that...OK?" Leo warned them

"OK" they both replied

Later when the boys were in their own bed Leo told Mike about his talk with
Martin

"I'm not that surprised" Mike said when Leo had finished

"well I was!" Leo said

"OK well it doesn't change anything for me, I still love him, so it's all
good"

"yeah I thought you'd be OK, that's why I told him so"

"and I'm glad Max doesn't have to hide this stuff from his dad too"

"we all need to be careful around Janice though, I've talked to the boys
about that but I think they should only have sleepovers here, if she caught
them it could cause problems"

"i agree... talk to Martin about it see what he thinks"

Leo also told Mike about how he found the boys this morning and Jacob
humping Tanner, just like we did, Mike laughed.

After a long and emotional day Mike and Leo fell asleep, wrapped up
together dreaming of each other and their boys.


Thursday after Mike had gone for a shower, Leo got up to wake the boys, he
found as he did yesterday with Jacob spooning behind Tanner. Leo sat on the
bed beside Tanner and stroked the boys hair lovingly, soon Tanner started
to stir and opened his eyes. Leo leaned down and kissed his sons cheek,
bringing a smile to his boys face. Leo reached over Tanner and started to
stroke Jacobs hair, he to woke up and smiled. Leo's hand left Jacobs face
and slid down his body pulling the duvet with it, revealing the naked boys

Leo pulled it down below their knees and slid his hand back up to Jacobs

Leo grabbed some tissues from the boys bed side table and wiped the lube
out of Tanner's bum and off Jacob's willy. Mike left for work knowing he'd
be thinking about tonight now for the rest of the day. Leo got the boys
fed, bathed, dressed and off to school. He worked hard again all day and
was finally able to get caught up on his work load.

When Mike got into work this morning he was assigned to paediatrics as
normal and a new patient was a boy of nine who had fallen of his bike this
morning. The boy had been seen by the children's ER doctor and sent up to
the children's ward for the day because he had a concussion. The kid would
be reassessed late afternoon to see if he could go home. Mike headed up to
the ward to do his rounds checking morning vitals and seeing how the
patients were feeling. When he got to the boy he quickly read the little
boys chart again checking the kids name and what Mike would need to check.

"hi Jason.. I'm Mike and I'll be looking after you today" Mike said
cheerily

"hi..." the little boy said as he slowly looked up and then looked down
again.

Jason was sat up in his hospital bed in a children's ward gown with the bed
sheets pulled up to his tummy. The poor boy looked banged up with a cut
above his eye and a bruise on his cheek. Next to him was his dad who smiled
at Mike, he was a overweight 30 year old, but seemed nice enough.

"I'm Jason's dad, Bob" the man said as he stood up to shake Mike's
hand. Mike shook Bob's hand and said hi back.

Mike looked at Jason putting the chart down on the bed and asked him how he
got hurt this morning trying to get the boy to talk, so he could assess the
boys cognitive level, which is used to assess the impact of concussion.

"he fell of his bike on the drive, silly boy didn't have his helmet on, did
you?" Bob said

"no sir" Jason said meekly

Mike had seen many times in the past parents trying to speak for their kids
because they did not understand it was a test. He lowered the railing on
the side of the bed and sat down on it. He reached out and lifted the boys
head to look at him.

"OK Jason, can you tell me what school you go to" Mike asked trying to get
the boy to talk

Bob was about to speak but Leo put his hand up to stop him,

"Branston primary" Jason replied

"wow... my sons go to Branston primary too, what's your favourite class?"
Mike continued his test

"art" Jason told him trying to look down again

"you like drawing and painting?" asked Mike lifting the boys head again

"i... I like drawing"

"my boys do too!" Mike said, although he didn't really know that, he was
just trying to engage with Jason.

Leo looked at the boys eye and saw it was a clean cut, fortunately with no
abrasions.

"OK Jason.. nearly done... how much does your head hurt on a scale of 1 to
10, 1 being not at all and 10 being the worst pain you ever felt?"

"3" the boy replied.

Leo felt that 3 was too low for a wound like that even with the pain
killers, but left it at that.

"OK thanks Jason, I'll be back in a bit... if you need me just call out or
press this button" Mike told him showing him a button on a wire connected
to the wall. He place the button next to Jason and left him and his dad and
moved on to the next patient. Twenty mins later Mike was with another kid
when he heard a phone ring. He looked over to see Bob answer his phone and
argue with someone, Mike was about to go over to tell him to take his call
outside but the call end quickly.

He returned to his patient but watched Bob out the corner of his eye, he
saw the man lean down to his sons head and whisper in his ear, as the man
poked his son hard in the chest, Mike saw a look of fear in the boys
face. Mike was already concerned about Jason and now more so. He thought
for a moment about meeting Jason and bob earlier and what was said and not
said. Mikes alarm bells started to ring in his head, as someone suddenly
said hey next to him causing him to jump.

"sorry.. I got to go to work... so I'll be back about 4pm" Bob said

Mike regained his composure and said OK Bob left the ward and Mike knew he
had to talk to Jason and find out what really happened. First he called his
friend Tom in legal. He explained his concerns and that he was going to
talk to the boy to find out more, Tom told him to carry on and he would log
Mikes concerns in compliance with the hospitals child protection
procedures. At this point nothing else would happen unless Mike got the boy
to talk about any abuse.

Mike returned to Jason this time with a stethoscope, he would use it as an
excuse to see the boys chest were Bob had poked the boy. He could also use
it to see the boys back to look for any suspicious marks.

"hi Jason.. I'm going to listen to your heart and lungs with a
stethoscope... you know what a stethoscope is?"

"no" Jason replied looking meekly at Mike

"OK.. pop these in your ears and I'll hold this end to your chest and
you'll be able to hear your heart pumping away" Mike said cheerfully

Mike sat the boy up more and slid his gown down to the boys waist. As he
did he saw a small bruise were Bob had poked the boy. Mike let Jason listen
before taking a listen himself. He then moved to Jason back and pretended
to listen to his lungs. He was actually looking for marks and saw a few old
bruises that were quite faded. This all added to Mikes concerns. Mike
needed check the rest of Jason's body including his bum. He could see the
boy had underwear on which Mike would not be able to remove without causing
a problem. He thought for a moment.

"OK Jason.. when was the last time you went to the toilet?"

"err... last night I think"

"OK.. well do you think you need to go, it would be good to make sure your
body is working properly"

"err... yeah... I need to pee anyway"

"OK buddy... lets go to the loo then" Mike said and picked the boy up and
carried him into the wards toilet. He set the boy down on the floor and
knelt in front of him.

"i have to stay with you because you banged your head OK"

The boy nodded, then Mike went straight into distracting the boy by talking
about his own sons, this seemed to relax Jason as Mike told him what
teachers Jacob and Tanner had. Jason told Mike he had some of the same
teachers. As mike gently removed the boys gown revealing the boys boxer
shorts he talked about Max, who was in Jacobs year.

"i know Max!" Jason said excitedly as Mike put the gown on sink.

"that's cool" Mike said "he's my best friends son, and he and my sons are
like brothers" Mike said as he slipped the boys boxer shorts down. Jason
was now happily distracted as Mike told him more about Max and his sons, he
guided the boy to the toilet checking out the boys rear as he did. Again
feint marks could be seen, old bruises Mike thought. He sat Jason down on
the toilet and the two talked some more. Jason talked a lot about school,
but nothing about home. Eventually Jason pee'd and pooped and said he was
finished. Mike stood him up and wiped the boys bum, looking for any other
bruises. Mike dressed the boy again and picked him up, the boy wrapped his
arms round Mike and hugged him. Mike hugged Jason back still standing in
the bathroom.

"you OK Jason?" Mike asked

"yeah... thank you Mike" the boy said quietly

"for what"

"for being nice"

Mike carried the boy back to his bed, he laid Jason back down and covered
him up with his sheets, the boy looked at him with pleading eyes. Mike then
did something he's never done before, driven by his emotions, he pulled the
curtains closed around Jason's bed, leaned down to the boys head and gave
him a gentle kiss to the forehead. Jason beamed a big smile and Mike
ruffled the boys hair, being careful of the boys wounds.

"thank you" Jason said

It was now or never Mike thought, as he sat on the side of Jason's bed. He
held Jason's hands in his and spoke quietly to the little brown haired boy

"Jason.. I know you didn't fall of your bike this morning... I've now seen
the bruises on your body and I saw your dad threaten you earlier...please
Jason.. tell me what really happened, let me help you... please I can stop
what's happening but you need to tell me...please!" Mike said as the tears
started to fall from his face. Jason to now had tears in his eyes and was
looking helplessly at Mike.  Mike reached up with one hand and cupped
Jason's cheek.

"I promise Jason.. I can help... you don't deserve to be hurt... you
deserve to be loved and when we stop the abuse and you become friends with
my sons, YOU WILL BE LOVED!"

"you...you... promise?"

"yes Jason.. we'll stop you getting hurt and I promise you, my sons will be
your friends and Max too, you can come over to ours to play and have
sleepovers too if you want....just talk to me...OK?"

Mike wiped his eyes with his sleeve and wiped Jason's with his hand. Jason
crying slowed,

"he hits me... my dad... he hits mum too"

"well done Jason... did he hit you this morning?"

"yes... I... I...screamed when he hit mum this morning and he hit me" Jason
started to cry again as did Mike. He moved up and hugged the scared little
boy. He then pressed the call button on the side of Jason's bed while he
held the boy close, a moment later nurse Tracy poked her head in through
the curtains.

"you OK Mike?" asked Tracy

"yeah... can you call Tom in legal and have him come down urgent, we have a
CP issue"

"yes Mike I'm on it" Tracy said and rushed off.

Minutes later with Mike still holding Jason, Tom arrived. Mike pulled away
from Jason and held the boys hands.

"Jason.. this is my friend Tom and he's a very nice man... can you tell him
what you told me about this morning... so he can help us?"

Jason looked to Mike for reassurance and Mike smiled at him. Jason told Tom
about this morning and other things his dad had done to him and his
mom. Tom listened and recorded on his phone what was said. Tom told Jason
he was very brave and he had done good. Mike was told to stay with Jason
and another nurse would be sent in to help Tracy with the ward duties.

Tom went off to call in the police and social services. He also told
security and reception that Bob was not allowed to visit his son. Security
asked if they should detain the man if he showed up and Tom told them
yes. The security guys having worked at the hospital for a long time knew
that the man must have abused his son in some way to be banned from seeing
him, they secretly hoped the man would turn up so they could rough him
up. As ex-Gurkha's they looked gentle but were hard as nails and could hurt
people with out marking them.

Mike stayed with Jason as the police and social services came and went. The
police found Jason's mum at home battered and bruised and soon she was in
the hospital too. She gave a statement to the police and was fixed up ready
to go home later. She was allowed to go and see Jason, when she arrived
with a Gurkha as her escort, in case Bob showed up, she saw Jason in bed
with Mike sat on the side next to him with his arm round the little boy.

"mom!" shouted Jason as Mike got up to make way for her.

Jason told his mom how Mike had helped him and that his sons were at
Branston primary as well. He said he was going to be friends with them
excitedly. Tina listened intently as she realised that her son had been
braver than she had been and finally reported her abusive husband. She felt
so guilty for not protecting her son. She was also grateful to Mike who had
helped her son even offering his own sons to befriend hers. Eventually she
hugged Mike and thanked him profusely.

"Bleep bleep bleep – code 3" came over the Gurkha radio and he ran off
in a hurry

Ten minutes later he was back and pulled Mike and Tina away from Jason

"your husbands been detained down stairs, although he needs treatment for
his broken nose and cut face. The police are coming to take him away
afterwards" the Gurkha grinned

"resisted did he?" Mike smiled

"a little...yes"

"thank you so much" Tina said hugging the Gurkha

Mike and Tina went back to Jason and told him his dad had been caught and
that they were now safe. It was now nearly 4 pm and Jason had been
reassessed and would be staying in hospital tonight due to the concussion
and the stress he'd been under today. Mike made a call and 30 minutes later
Leo turned up on the ward with Jacob, Tanner and Max.

"Max!" Jason shouted at his class mate,

Max ran over to Jason and jumped on the bed and hugged his friend. They
were not that close before but Leo had told the boys the basic's of what
Jason had been through. Jason was taken aback by Max's hug and started to
cry again. Tanner and Jacob got up on either side of the bed and hugged
Jason too. Jason was overwhelmed by the love he was getting from the boys
and continued to cry, some of the tears were from the relief he felt and
some from the pain of his early life.

Max, Tanner and Jacob continued to comfort Jason and eventually they were
all on the bed snuggled up together. Tina having never seen such a show of
empathy and love, broke down and was comforted by Mike. Leo looked on with
pride as his family showed how loving they were. Eventually everyone
settled down and began talking, Jacob eventually wandered off. Later Mike
found him with another boy a few beds down talking away about kids
stuff. Later Leo asked him if he knew the boy?

"no... he just looked lonely" Jacob replied earning him a hug

After a request from the boys it was arranged that Jason would spend the
day with them on Saturday. Jason was getting tired and Mikes shift ended
hours ago, so Leo, Mike, Tanner, Jacob and Max left. Mike said he'd see
Jason in the morning and gave the boy a hug. He hugged Tina too.

They stopped by Martin's to drop of Max and tell Martin and Janice what had
happened, they thanked them also for letting them borrow Max this evening.
Janice was very moved by the events and told the boys how kind they were.

When they got home it was already late, so they ate dinner and headed up to
bed. The boys slept with their dads after they all agreed to play around
tomorrow instead of tonight. Mike spooned up behind Jacob and hugged him
tight, the emotions of the day leaving him tired and fragile. His little
boy close to him helped him relax and soon they all fell asleep.
