Broken Boy: Chapter Two Simon didn't remember how he came to be at the hospital. His last memory was of violence and pain. He felt numb, unable to process in his mind the change that was taking place. He didn't feel like eating. He didn't want to talk to anyone either, least of all the doctors who kept poking and prodding him. He kept his mouth firmly shut except for the one time when he whispered his name to Kevin. He didn't know why he even spoke to that guy, and he was confused as to why he trusted him, even if only a little. Maybe it was the kind words that Kevin spoke to him, but it might have been some other feeling. Simon didn't want to dwell on it and he wasn't going to talk again, to anyone. He was afraid he would only get hurt again. He definitely wasn't going to tell anyone his last name. Simon didn't know that they already knew his full name, didn't know that he was safe for now. He didn't believe Kevin when he said so, adults only wanted to ignore him or hurt him. He was closed off, and he had made a pact with himself not to open up for anyone. Simon was broken. He awoke on the second day early in the morning, so early in fact that he was completely alone. He didn't panic this time, just laid in the hospital bed and looked out the window of his room. He was relieved to be away from his father another day, but he didn't want to feed that feeling, Scared as he was that he would return to his father. It wasn't long before he started to feel the need to pee. He tried to get up before he remembered that he had a cast on his arm and leg, the latter of the two keeping him from walking. He started to panic now, afraid he would be in trouble if he wet the bed. He breathed a sigh of relief as a nurse walked in. The first thing he noticed was that the nurse was male, his trauma immediately brought to the forefront of his brain by this realization. Like an automatic switch, his bladder released, wetting himself and his bed with urine. He felt tears come to his eyes then, sure that he was going to get a beating. It was obvious to both him and the nurse that he had just wet the bed. He covered his lap with his hands in a futile effort to keep the man from finding out but it was too late. Simon didn't bother to wipe his tears, which flowed freely down his face. If he could have sank into the bed and disappeared he would have. The nurse approached Simon's bed slowly as he didn't want to frighten the boy more than he already was. "It's okay Simon, we'll get you cleaned up and change those sheets. Don't cry, your not in trouble." He said to reassure the boy. His words didn't seem to have any effect so he continued, "My name is James, Simon. I was assigned to make sure you had everything you need. I'll be taking care of you during my shift for the next week. I promise I won't hurt you or embarrass you at all." He said as he pulled the curtain to block the sight of anyone who would look in, giving them privacy. Afterwards he moved to the bedside and placed his hand on the child's arm. He was trying to radiate warmth and calm, but he could feel Simon tense. He didn't want the boy to close down on him, knowing it was already going to be hard just to get him to open up. "I know your hurt, but I'm not like the person who did this to you. I couldn't possible hurt a child as cute as you." He said this as he pulled a strand of long blonde hair from the child's face. He could tell that Simon definitely needed his hair washed, something he would do himself if he could get the boy comfortable with him. From Simon's reaction he could tell that his words weren't believed, but he persisted, not willing to give up easily. He placed his hand on the boy's forearm and waited. Simon eventually relaxed. He didn't trust James, but he understood that he needed help. He was starting to get uncomfortable, his blanket and hospital gown began to grow cold and cling to his skin. He wasn't going to let James know that, but he wasn't going to resist him either. Thankfully James was very good with children and was able to tell the signs that the boy had realized his helplessness. He gently took Simon's hands in his and began to move them out of the way. "Thank you Simon, I promise I won't hurt you. We need to get you cleaned up, okay?" He smiled at Simon when he saw the boy nod slightly. "I'm going to have to remove the blankets and your gown now, but don't be embarrassed. I've worked with lots of other boys, some of which wet the bed all the time." James knew that it sometimes helped a child to feel better when they knew that they weren't the only ones that wet themselves. He was glad when he saw Simon relax further. He didn't want to wait any longer because he knew the boy was getting uncomfortable in his current state. He moved the boy's hands to a spot where they would be out of the way and grasped the edge of the blanket. He pulled it from the boy's lap and the bed, thankful for the hamper that was in the room for just such occasions. Next was the boy's gown and he only hesitated for a few seconds before undoing the ties in the back and removing that too. Simon was now completely naked, his soiled midsection on full view. He started to move his hands, intending to cover up his small penis and scrotum, but James intercepted them. Holding Simon's hands gently but firmly, he looked into the boy's eyes. "You don't have to cover up, I think you look just fine. Don't be embarrassed either, you need help and there is nothing wrong with that." He knew his words helped, however miniscule an effect they had. Simon didn't resist when James moved his hands to his chest. "I'm going to have to grab a few items before we can get you cleaned okay? I'll be right back. No one else will enter and I'll let you know that I'm here before I come in." He waited for a few seconds in case Simon responded in some way, but when he got no response he left for the items he needed. By the time James returned, Simon had started to shiver with the cold. He had pulled his good leg up and was hugging it to his chest while sitting up, trying to comfort himself and keep warm. "Simon? I'm back, I'm coming in now." James returned with a completely new bed and items he could use to sponge bath Simon, an activity that James thoroughly enjoyed. He never did anything with any of his charges, but he still enjoyed washing them. "I'm going to transfer you to this special bed we use for sponge baths so I can clean you up and get your sheets changed okay?" James didn't bother waiting for an answer, knowing he wouldn't get one. He lifted the boy and placed him on the new bed, telling him to lay down and relax. At first Simon resisted, but not for any true amount of time. He was slowly beginning to trust James, who hadn't yet hurt him in any way. He liked how gentle James was with him, and unbeknownst to Simon, he was starting to grow attached. This was the first adult who actually seemed to care about him and he didn't want to lose that or anger the man. Before James started the sponge bath he decided to strip the sheets from the old bed and put them in the hamper. He quickly wiped down the plastic mattress with disinfectant wipes and dressed the bed in new sheets he had brought with him. When he returned to Simon, who was watching him administer to the bed, he decided to do a full bath. He wanted to wash the child's hair and redress the stitches that ran a good length of his forehead. Before he started to clean the boy he gave him some pain medication to help keep him comfortable. He was only slightly amazed that Simon hadn't complained of pain, he knew he had to be in a lot of it right now. He wanted to make the boy feel better, and he was resolved to do anything to make him happy. James decided to work from the boy's feet up his body, being extra delicate the entire time. He was careful not to spend too much time on the boy's privates, since he didn't want to scare him at all. He was careful to clean under Simon's foreskin though, such things were very important. He continued up the child's body and finished the sponge bath. Simon enjoyed this treatment immensely. It had been so long since he had felt anything but pain and he was beginning to truly relax. He knew he was starting to like James, but he didn't want to tell him so or really even talk at all. He was too scared he would say the wrong thing and ruin everything. James placed a special tub with a neck rest under Simon's head and had him lay back on hit, helping him to support his head. He informed Simon that he was going to was his hair and was gladdened when he actually got a response. The response was only a small noise one makes when eating or feeling something that was pleasurable, but it made James happy to know that he had Simon almost completely relaxed. He had thought it would be harder than this to get him to start opening up, however slightly. He was gentle with Simon's hair and spent a good amount of time making sure it was properly cleaned. When he was satisfied that the child was completely clean he grabbed a towel and started to dry Simon's hair. He didn't need to dry the rest of the boy's body since he had taken so long on his hair that he had air dried. Having his hair washed was so relaxing for Simon that he was starting to drift off to sleep by the time that James started drying him. He sat up for James so that he could have his hair brushed, which showed that it was very tangled. Thanks to his hair being wet however, James was able to brush it thoroughly and get all the tangles out without causing Simon any pain. Having finished everything, James moved Simon back onto his proper and now clean bed and covered him up. He didn't want to bother with replacing the hospital gown, knowing that it would just get in the way and that most kids didn't like the gown anyway. Simon fell fast asleep after he laid back down, the events of his early morning having tired him out quickly. James took one last look at the sleeping child and smiled with contentment. He hoped this boy would be all right when he was discharged. When Simon next awoke he was feeling better, his mind replaying the events of his early morning. He looked around him and noticed two men standing near the door talking. One was Kevin, but the other was someone that Simon had not yet met. Simon would have watched intently, but he was distracted when his stomach grumbled it's emptiness. He moved his arms to clutch at his stomach and hug himself in comfort, once again forgetting that one of his arms was in a cast. He still used his good arm to hug his stomach though. Simon was used to this feeling, he had gone hungry enough while living with his father. He was practically skin and bone as a result, each of his ribs was easily countable on his bare chest. He looked towards the window and saw movement, which he sat up to get a better view of. The blanket he was covered with pooled in his lap, his upper body now bare in the comfortably warm room. He was so intent on seeing out the window of his room that he didn't notice the two men had stopped talking and were watching him. Simon heard his stomach grumble again and looked down at himself, which was when he noticed the two men looking at him. He felt his face heat as he grabbed the blanket to cover himself. He became self-conscious of his body, which his father had repeatedly told him was ugly. Kevin moved forward then, having heard Simon's stomach grumble. "Are you hungry Simon? We can get you some breakfast sent up if you would like." When Kevin finished talking he was standing at the bedside, his hand resting on the guardrail that comes standard in all hospital beds. He watched closely for Simon's barely perceptible nod. "Simon, this man is from Children and Youth Services. His name is Jason And he wants to talk to you a little bit. Will you speak with him." Simon had no drive to talk with another man, he really didn't want to talk at all. So he shook his head no and looked away. He was unsure of where he got the courage to do this, if he had even slightly denied his father for any reason he would get beaten. His interaction earlier in the morning might have had a big factor in his new found courage. He didn't want to talk, but that didn't mean he couldn't interact in some way. Kevin wasn't anticipating an answer, so he was thrown off guard. He looked at Jason, unsure of how to continue. Jason just nodded at him, clearly watching to see how Kevin would handle everything. "Well, you don't have to talk if you don't want to. Please listen to Jason and hear what he has to say, Okay? I'm going to go get you some breakfast." Kevin lingered a minute, trying to gauge Simon's emotions. He was hesitant to leave, but he wanted to give Simon privacy. He knew that if Simon wanted to share his emotions with him he would do so on his own time. He wasn't going to be able to force him. Kevin left the room then, but Simon wasn't watching. He was staring downward, not really focused on anything. He didn't look up when Jason start talking. "How are you doing Simon?" No answer. "Simon, do you know why I'm here?" No answer. Jason wasn't getting anywhere, and he knew it. He forged on regardless. "Simon..." Jason took a deep breath before continuing, "You're not going to be able to go back and live with your father. It was decided that you should be placed in the foster care system, as your father is not fit to take care of you." He paused to let this sink in a bit, he hoped it would help the child, knowing he wouldn't be going back to that environment. "Please understand, what your father did was wrong. He didn't treat you the way he was supposed to, and not even close to how you deserve to be treated." Jason himself was looking down at the floor now, fighting to keep from showing emotion himself. "Kevin, the nurse who introduced us, has offered to take you in. He has a son right around your age. I think you'll do great there, but if you have any problems all you have to do is call me. I'll come and get you out, okay?" He placed a business card on the retracting table used for feeding patients in bed. "Here is my contact information. Just call that number and I'll answer." He watched Simon pick up the card and look at it. He was satisfied that he had at least been listened to, sometimes the most extreme cases were so closed down emotionally that they regressed into their early years and were virtually impossible to work with. This didn't seem to be the case with Simon. "I have to leave now Simon, but if you want to talk to me or need help just call me. Any time, I'll answer." He turned to leave, almost missing it. "I.. I d-don't have to g-go back?" It was spoken at barely above a whisper and when Jason turned back he had to fight once again to keep from getting emotional. Simon was looking dead at him and tears were in his eyes. It was the first time Simon had spoken, and it was obvious in both his voice and body language how terrified be was. Jason did his best to reassure the boy. "Of course not. Your father won't be taking care of you anymore. I promise." It was an easy promise, one Jason knew he could keep. "Do you have any more questions Simon? Don't be afraid to ask, you won't get in trouble." Simon just shook his head. He didn't believe it, he couldn't. There was no way that they would save him. His father had said that he couldn't be saved, that no one wanted a useless shit like him. Simon didn't know any better than to believe his father's words, it was all he had heard for two years of his young life. He didn't want to ask more questions, and as much as he wanted to believe Jason was telling the truth he just couldn't. So he looked away, tears streaming unchecked down his face as he glanced out his room's window. It was about this time that Kevin returned carrying a tray of food. "Here you go buddy, I hope you like pancakes." Simon wiped away his tears and looked at Kevin, who placed the tray of food on a moving table and slide it over for him to eat. Kevin kept quiet about the tears, he didn't want to embarrass the boy. Simon was apprehensive at first, unsure if he was free to eat. He watched Kevin for his reaction as he took his first bite, and when he didn't immediately get yelled at he proceeded to finish the meal. The food was the best he had had in a while, let alone the only meal he had eaten in close to a week. He tried to eat it fast, afraid it might be taken from him, but he slowed down when he realized this wouldn't happen. "Kevin, I have to head out. I've got a lot of work to do today and very little time to do it. I leave Simon in your capable hands." Jason shook Kevin's hand and smiled warmly at Simon before departing. Simon laid back and relaxed slightly after he finished his meal. He had surprised Kevin by eating the full meal. He watched Kevin as the man moved the table away and returned. He could tell that Kevin wanted to talk, wanted him to talk, but he wasn't sure what to say or if he wanted to say it. "Are you full?" Kevin asked, gaining an affirmative nod from Simon. "How are you feeling? Are you hurting?" Simon thought for a moment before nodding his head. Simon might be used to pain but he definitely still felt it. He watched as Kevin got up and pressed the call button. "If you ever need anything and no one is hear to help you just press this button. Someone will come help you." It wasn't long before James showed up. "Hello Simon, are you all right?" He said as he entered the room. Simon nodded and looked to Kevin, relying on him to relay his need. It was a subconscious thing, but it was the first step to trusting Kevin. "Oh, hi Kevin, How are you?" The two men shook hands, it was obvious to Simon that they knew each other, although he didn't know how. After they greeted each other Kevin turned toward Simon and told James that he was feeling pain. James administered some pain meds, all the while talking to Simon to keep him relaxed. Due to the incident earlier in the morning Simon was at ease around James and even smiled once at one of his jokes. It was the first smile Simon had shown in a while, sadly it didn't extend to his eyes. Time progressed with very little interaction between Kevin and Simon until a doctor showed up and pronounced Simon fit to leave the following day after a final examination that would happen around noon that next day. Simon got nervous after hearing this, his stomach beginning to feel butterflies. The anxiety of his possibly returning to his father was almost too much for him. Kevin could tell that something was wrong after the doctor left. He could see Simon squirming and his breathing had picked up. He could tell all the signs of a panic attack coming, thanks to schooling he had taken for his job. He rushed over to Simon and gently grasped his hand. "Take a deep breath Simon, everything is all right. Just breathe." He tried to help Simon calm down, his training coming in handy. There was never another moment when he was happier for the career he had chosen. When Simon had calmed down enough Kevin began to prod slightly. "Please talk to me Simon, What's wrong? What are you scared of?" he said it in such a soft and comforting voice that Simon found himself answering without even meaning too. "I.. I don't... I d-don't want... to g-go b-back." Simon broke into full sobs at this point. He had no control of himself. He couldn't stop himself from crying, it was like a dam in him had broken. He sat feeling alone until he was unexpectedly hugged by Kevin and held close. He wrapped his good arm around the man and clung tight. Crying into the man's shoulder. "Shhhhh. Buddy don't worry about that. You won't ever go back." Kevin comforted. He held the boy just as tightly as the boy held him, he would kill that man before he ever allowed him to have this beautiful child back. He made comforting noises and rocked the boy gently, it was a good couple of minutes before Simon brought himself back under control. It felt good to be held and Simon didn't want to release his grip on Kevin, it was another first for him. He loved the feelings he got from that contact and when Kevin broke away he craved that feeling again. A thought that things might be getting better crossed his head. Two men now had told him he wouldn't be living with his father anymore and he wanted to believe it so bad. He used the edge of his blanket to wipe his tears. After he finished he looked to Kevin, who watched Simon with a small smile on his face. Kevin felt a real connection with the child beginning to form. "You're going to come live with me now. I have a son who is only a little older than you and he has begged me for a little brother for a long time. I also wanted another son myself and I was hoping you would come be a part of our family. What do you think of that?" Kevin asked Simon thought that things couldn't possible be any better than that, since he himself had wanted a brother since he was little. He would be happy, however, as long as he didn't have to go back to his father. Simon didn't trust himself to speak without crying again, so he nodded his head and smiled. He didn't completely believe that he was free from his father and he wouldn't until he left the hospital with Kevin and saw his new home. "Ummm... K-Kevin?" Simon whispered. "Yes?" "I h-have t-to pee." Simon informed the man, blushing and looking down into his lap as he did so. He never spoke above a whisper but it didn't matter, Kevin was careful to listen closely since the first time he heard Simon whisper his own name. "Okay, do you want me to help you or do you want me to call James back?" Kevin asked. "J-James please." Simon said after thinking for a moment. He decided on James because James had already seen him naked. He didn't want Kevin to see him naked. He watched as Kevin pushed the call button again and waited, squirming slightly with his need. When James entered Simon bit his lip, afraid and embarrassed to speak his need he looked to Kevin again. "He says he has to pee." Kevin told James, who nodded and pulled the curtain for privacy. He grabbed a bed pan and told Simon how it would work and what he would need to do. He then pulled down Simon's blanket and positioned the pan. James hesitated for a second before skinning back the foreskin on Simon's small penis and aiming it in. "Just relax and let it go, I'll do the rest." James said. He waited patiently for Simon to relax enough to do his business. After Simon finished he took a wet wipe and cleaned the head of Simon's penis before replacing the skin. Simon blushed at this, but he didn't say anything as James took the bed pan and pulled the blanket back up for Simon. After James had cleaned up and left Simon relaxed back into his bed and closed his eyes. "Simon, I'm going to have to leave for a little while. I'll be back tonight. Would you like to meet my son?" Simon nodded sleepily and quickly fell asleep. Simon was awoken around noon for lunch and after eating some of the food he fell back asleep, still very much exhausted. Simon awoke later in the day when Kevin walked in with another boy. He looked the other boy over shyly, it had been awhile since he had ever had a friend and he wasn't sure what to do to make one anymore. "Simon, this is my son Tyler. Tyler, this is Simon, he is the boy I told you about." Kevin introduced them, hoping that his son would be able to break the ice better than he had. He hadn't any need to worry though. "Hi Simon, I'm your new Big brother, okay?" Tyler said this with such a big grin that Simon himself ended up smiling. Simon looked the boy over. He had medium length blond hair that didn't go too far past his ears, it was long enough to get in his eyes, which was evident since he would flick it out of them every few minutes. Tyler's eyes were blue, and his nose was a cute button in the center. He was a skinny boy, but not malnourished like Simon was. He was wear a blue shirt with black shorts that Simon thought looked oddly nice on him. Simon realized he wasn't wearing any clothes underneath his blanket and ended up blushing and looking down at his lap shyly. He wanted desperately for Tyler to like him. "Don't worry, you'll get to stay with me in my room and we can have a lot of fun. We have a Ps4 too so we can play games." Tyler's attitude was infectious and Simon quickly opened up. Before long the two were close. It didn't matter that Simon barely talked, Tyler talked enough for both of them. It wasn't long before Kevin and Tyler had to leave again. Tyler gave Simon a rough hug when he left, Simon didn't care about the pain but Kevin chastised his son, who apologized. Kevin told Simon he would be back tomorrow and that he would see his new home after the examination in the morning. Simon fell asleep again shortly after eating, his mind on the new life he hoped he would have. He dreamed of Tyler and Kevin, of a new life where has was happy. For the first night since his mother died, Simon fell asleep happy.
