Chapter 2 – Meeting Anna

I left James' office with a new attitude. I felt the meeting went well and was looking forward to finally making some changes in my life for the better. On my way home, I stopped by a furniture store to get some ideas for new furnishings for a kid's bedroom. I didn't buy anything because I didn't want to get my hopes up only to have them dashed later. I also stopped by the local toy store to get some ideas on things I may need there.

Upon returning home, I parked the Mustang Shelby in the garage and suddenly realized that as much as I loved the car, it wasn't going to be very practical when I had a kid to haul around. I first headed to my bedroom and undressed to get comfortable, then went to my study and fired up the computer to do some car shopping. Since I am a diehard Ford guy, I surfed to their website and started perusing the selection of available vehicles. After spending some time looking, I decided on a Flex Limited with all the available options. I figured if I was successful in adopting, he or she is going to have friends and I would, at times, need to transport more than one kid on multiple occasions and they might as well be comfortable. My decision made, I called the Ford dealer where I bought the Shelby and asked if I could order a car over the phone. The salesman balked at the idea, but when the sales manager, Herb, got on the phone and discovered who was asking, he gave his absolute approval. I told him what I was looking for, thanked and told him I would be in the next week to make payment arrangements.

While I was buying the new car, James got on the phone and started making inquiries of adoption and family service agencies in the area. On his fourth call, James finally had some luck. The agency did, indeed, have some children available for adoption to the right couple, a girl and several boys. James provided some basic information to the agency's director and asked if they thought I would an acceptable parent.

The director, Anna, stated that, usually, they only dealt with couples, but would be willing to discuss in more detail a single parent situation. When asked if they would have any problem with the parent being a gay man, the director suddenly lost all interest. James persisted and was finally able to get the director to agree to an interview the next Monday. James called me to pass on the good news.

"Max, it's James and I have some news for you."

"Already? I just left your office a few hours ago," I responded. "I can't believe you have been successful this quickly."

"It wasn't easy, Max. She wasn't too impressed with the idea of a single gay man adopting, but after talking to her for some time, I finally got her to agree to at least give us an interview. Are you doing anything next Monday at 1:00 that would prevent you from attending?"

"Hmmm, I don't know, give me a moment to think about it. I was thinking about weeding the garden, but since it's January, and weeds are covered with six inches of snow, I guess I can put that off until later. Hell no!! You tell me where and I'll be there."

"Well, here's my thought, Max. Why don't you come to my office and we'll go to the interview in my car? It's about a half-hour drive, so you should be here no later than 12:15. That should insure we are a bit early to their office."

"No problem, James. I'll be there. Thanks for the quick action and results."

The rest of the week and weekend seemed to drag, but when Monday arrived, I was ready to go. I arrived at James' office at noon and we headed to the interview shortly after. We arrived at the agency's office with 10 minutes to spare and headed into the lobby. After waiting for a few minutes, the director came out to greet us.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen. My name is Anna Stewart and I am the director of the agency."

James extended his hand, introduced himself and said, "It's a pleasure to meet you Anna." He then turned to me and added, "I'd like to introduce my client, Maxwill Sanders. Max, this is the wonderful woman I had to sweettalk on your behalf last week."

I shook hands with Anna and said, "It's nice to meet you, also, Anna. I'm looking forward to working with you."

Anna said, "I'm pleased to meet both of you, as well. Won't you please follow me and we can talk in my office."

Once in the office, Anna took a seat in comfortable chair away from her desk and offered the couch to James and me. Anna quickly studied both of us to get a feel of our personalities and she liked what her intuition was telling her. James started the conversation.

James started the meeting with, "Thanks for seeing us today, Anna. As we discussed on the phone last week, my client, Max, is interested in adopting a child in the six to ten-year old range. In our conversation, I relayed most of the information you would need in making your decision except for Max's identity. As I'm sure you can understand, Max preferred to keep his name out of the decision-making process until he was able to talk to someone face-to-face."

"That is not how we normally do things here, James, but upon meeting your client, I certainly understand the need for discretion. May I say to you, Mr. Sanders, that it is certainly a pleasure to finally meet you. I didn't realize you lived in the area. I have read all four of your books and I am looking forward to number five."

Max looked at the floor for a moment and then at Anna and replied, "First, please call me Max, everyone else does. Second, I'm afraid you are going to have a long wait for a fifth book, Anna. I have stopped writing for the time being. My writing was a kind of therapy for myself while I dealt with the issue of who I am. It took me a long time to accept the reality that I am gay. You are only the second person who knows that and I would appreciate it greatly if you would keep it to yourself. That realization has not dampened my desire for a family and I feel adoption is the only realistic way I can achieve that goal. I have a lot to offer to any child and have stopped writing so I can devote my time in that direction. I may write again later, but for now, that emotional outlet has been shut down."

"I'll certainly do that, Max. As with most all adoptions, virtually everything is kept sealed and confidential, but in light your notoriety, I don't know how long we would be able to maintain that confidentiality."

"Understood, Anna. I expect the news that I'm gay will come out in due time, I just want to be the one to do so, on my own terms, not someone else's."

"Well, the news will not come from this office. I can guarantee that to you right now."

"Thank you, Anna."

"Now, on to our interview. James tells me you are hoping to adopt a boy in the six to ten-year old range. Please tell me why a boy and why that age range."

"Like I told James when I first talked to him, I picked the age based on the realities of raising a child from a younger age. Let's face it, I'm a single guy and in all honesty, while I really want to have a family to share in my life, I don't think I do well with diaper changes, middle-of-the-night feedings and the toddler years all by myself. I would like to avoid having to hire someone to help me, not that I couldn't afford it, but I just like doing things myself. I also know that older children tend to be more difficult to place in homes and I truly think that's a shame. It's almost like they are being punished just by growing up, which they obviously can't help.

"As to why a boy, again, in all honesty, I don't think I could adequately and properly care for a girl from puberty on through the teen years. Since I'm gay, all the things you have deal with while girls are growing up would make me very uncomfortable and I would be a very bad source of information or inspiration to a girl. There is no doubt in my mind that she would end up hating me and I just couldn't accept that."

"Well, I appreciate your candor, Max. Now, let me be just as candid back. I understand your misgivings about raising a girl and would rule that option out for you because I think you are 100% correct, given your feelings as you stated them, as to how things would turn out. That said, I also have serious concerns about allowing a gay man to adopt a boy. I know it's not politically correct to say this, but I'm going to anyway, as politely as I can. I would always have a fear that a gay man would take advantage of his position of authority over a boy and force him to do things that would land the man in prison for a very long time and the boy back in the system."

"I would NEVER do anything to a child that would be considered improper. I understand your thoughts and I don't hold that against you. I knew that would be a concern and you are doing your job in looking out for the best interests of the child. That is my intention also. I have a lot that I can share with any child and I would like to do so. I am hopeful that we can work together to give a child a happy, stable and loving home."

"You have certainly given me something to think about, Max, and I will have discussions with some of our case workers this week. I'll keep your name out of those discussions a long as absolutely possible. If I think we have a child that would fit well in the situation, I'll let James know on Friday and we can have you come back to meet him next week. I will warn you now that if we proceed and you are successful in adopting, we will be keeping a very close watch on you for some time. At the very first hint of anything improper, you will lose the child and be in jail. Do you understand?"

"I most certainly do and we'll be waiting for your call. Thanks for your time today and I hope to be seeing you again soon." We shook hands with Anna, left the office and headed for the car. Once in the car and on the way back to the James' office, I asked James, "Well, how do you think that went?"

James replied, "Better than what I expected after talking to her last week. At least she didn't shoot you down right out of the gate, which I was sure would happen. We'll just have to wait for Friday to see if she was serious about helping you."
