Chapter 5 - Preparations

I drove home with my brain swirling with thoughts of what I had to do to prepare for 4 boys to spend a weekend at my house. Of course, I assumed Anna would be agreeable with the idea and wanted to be prepared for whatever happened. After parking the Shelby in the garage, I undressed and headed to my study to start making new lists of what needed to be accomplished and making phone calls to make it all happen. The first item on my list and, therefore, my first call, was to the company that installed and maintained my pool. If the boys wanted to go swimming when they were here, I would have to have a cover for the pool that would allow us to be comfortable despite the freezing winter temps and six plus inches of snow on the ground.

Mike White answered the phone when I called. "M&M Pools. How can I help you?"

"Mike, Max Sanders here. How are you this fine, frigid day?"

"Bored as hell, Max. Nobody wants a pool installed in January and we have nothing to do. Can't even sell a spa to anybody right now and there sure isn't any pool maintenance to deal with this time of year. You gonna fix that for me?"

"As a matter of fact, Mike, I'm sure hoping to. I've been thinking about this for a while and I'd like to see what it would take to have an enclosure installed so I can enjoy the pool all year. Think you can help me with that?"

"You bet. I wish more people would do that. We might be able to stay busy during the winter if more folks could swim all year. What type of enclosure are looking for, Max?"

"I'm looking for something that can be heated for winter use, obviously, but then be taken down or opened up to enjoy the fresh air during the summer. Is there anything like that available?"

"There are a couple of different options that would serve your purpose. How about if I come out tomorrow morning? I can take some measurements and show you some brochures of what's available, then we can discuss it in more detail."

"That would be perfect, Mike. What time do you want to come out?"

"Well, my schedule's pretty full," he chuckled. "But seriously, how about 9:00? That will give me time to come to the office, see what's not happening here and then I'll head out. It takes about 30 minutes to get to your house from here. Sound okay to you?"

"That's perfect, Mike. I'll have some fresh coffee on when you get here. I'll see you then."

Scratch item one off the list. My next call was to a cleaning service. While I'm not a slob by any stretch of the imagination, I felt it would be a good idea to have someone come do a thorough cleaning before my hoped for guests arrived. I hopped on the internet to look for cleaning services in the area. After finding one with excellent reviews, I got on the phone and dialed the number.

"Thank you for calling Merry Maids, this is Joyce, how may I brighten your day?"

"Hi, Joyce, my name is Maxwill Sanders and I need some cleaning done at my home."

"Good afternoon, Mr. Sanders, we'd be glad to help out. May I ask what type of cleaning you need?"

"Well, I'm a single guy and have a rather large house in the center of a small woods. I try to keep things up, but it's been quite a while since I've given the place a thorough cleaning. Under normal circumstances, I'd take care of it myself, but I'm expecting some weekend house guests in a few weeks and won't have the time I need to take care of everything that needs done."

"What services are looking for, sir?"

"Pretty much everything, I guess. Vacuuming, mopping, cleaning windows, dusting, and I need the linens in three bedrooms, either cleaned and the beds re-made or changed with the current linens cleaned later. Do you think you can help me out?"

"I have no doubt that we can, sir. You say it's a big house. Approximately how big and is it a one or two-story home?"

"I have a total of 4500 square feet of living space and it's all on one level. Oh, and as weird as it sounds, I'd also like my outside pool area cleaned up with all the snow removed and furniture cleaned."

"We can certainly take care of all that without any problems. I think a crew of 4 people should be able to accomplish everything in a day. If we clean the bed linens with the intentions to use the same ones, would we be allowed to use your laundry machines, or would we have to take them elsewhere?"

"If your people think they can get them all washed, dried and the beds re-made the same day using my machines, I'm happy to let them do so. All 3 beds are king size, so the comforters are pretty large and would probably have to be washed one at a time unless they are taken to an outside service with larger machines. I'll let your people decide on how best to handle the situation one they get here and have a chance to see what they're in for."

"That sounds fine, Mr. Sanders. When would like us to come out?"

"Well, I have a meeting tomorrow with my pool guy that could take quite a bit of time so why don't we shoot for the next day? We'll be going in and out the whole time he's here and I don't want to be in your way."

"That will be perfect. I'll have a crew of four of our most experienced people there at 9:00AM, ready to work. We'll bring all our own equipment and supplies except for a washer and dryer. Will you be staying at the home while the cleaning is happening?"

"Probably, yes. I have some other things to take care of that day, but I'll stay out of the way. When your crew gets here, I'll have them take care of my study first and then I can go ahead and get out of their way while they work on the rest of the place."

"That sounds fine. Everything is all set on this end. You have a great day and we'll see you the day after tomorrow."

"Thanks, Joyce, you have a good day, also." Item two checked off, ready for number three.

I next started a shopping list of the food and supplies I would need to get to cover the needs of six people for weekend. Figuring out meals to feed six people that would suit everybody turned out to be more time consuming than I anticipated. I assumed the boys and Anna's aide would be here from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. I finally decided we would stop at Steak `n Shake on the way out of town for supper Friday evening. That would allow us to spend all our time at home getting to know each other a little better. Then Saturday morning, I would do scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and toast for breakfast, grill hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch along with a variety of chips, then, for supper, we would have pizza from Capone's just a few miles away. They don't deliver, but it would take only 10 minutes to pick it up and bring it back home to eat. That left just Sunday to figure out. I finally settled on waffles for breakfast and spaghetti with my home-made sauce along with garlic toast in the middle of the afternoon for lunch/dinner.

I would also have to lay in a supply of drinks of various types. I basically drink only coffee, Pepsi or water at home, but I thought I should also have tea available along with a variety of soft drinks. I also planned to get an assortment of juices for the boys to have for snacks. Snacks! Damn, I almost forgot snacks of some kind. I well remember when I was the age the boys are now how much I liked getting a snack of some kind in the afternoon and again in the evening before going to bed. I was sure these boys wouldn't be any different. I guess I better add some cookies, crackers and maybe some apples or oranges to my shopping list, too. I wondered if any of them would like bananas. I decided to hold off on them this time. Since I didn't know exactly what any of the boys would like for drinks or snack, I planned to get a wide variety of both just cover my bases. I also added a note to my other to-do list to clean out the refrigerator in the garage to make room for the drinks. That way they would all be cold and reduce the need for ice through the weekend.

Check number three of the list of things to do.

My next list concerned entertainment. While I have a very nice entertainment system in my home theater, I really didn't have any movies in my collection that I thought would be good for the boys to watch. They were all either too violent, riddled with inappropriate language or the subject was what I thought would be above their age level. I absolutely love 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I wasn't prepared to try and explain it to six, seven and eight-year-olds. I decided a stop at Walmart or Best Buy would be required to pick a few movies that would be more appropriate for the intended audience. I thought about maybe getting some board games, also, but decided I would be better off to wait until later when I knew more about what they might like.

Item four done, ready to move on.

After a couple of hours working on and refining my lists, I saved them all to the computer so I could print them out later when it would be time to do the actual shopping. I realized that time had gotten away from me and it was now dark outside, and much later that I thought it should be. It suddenly hit me that not only did I skip lunch today, but I also had missed supper. That explains the empty feeling I had in my gut. I wandered into the kitchen and browsed for a few minutes before I decided to just fix myself a burger and fries. Not great food, but it would fill me up and get my stomach to stop hurting. I cleaned up the kitchen after eating and then headed to the home theater to watch a movie before going to bed.

I popped National Lampoon's Vacation in the Blu-ray player and kicked back in my lounger to enjoy a few laughs. I've seen the movie so many times, I wasn't really paying much attention to it and my mind kept drifting back to the four boys I had met just a few hours ago. Alexander and Joseph are as identical as any twins I had ever seen. They both had light blond hair and blue eyes, were about four feet tall and weighed about 80 pounds. Both were your classic cute lads and I could see them breaking some serious hearts later in life. Thomas had dark hair and brown eyes, was just a bit shorter than the twins and weighed maybe 70 or 75 pounds. He seemed to have a very up personality, but I could see where his being so outspoken and not afraid to say what he's thinking could be a possible issue if he couldn't learn to control it. Michael has red hair, hazel eyes and his face was covered in freckles. He was about 3½ feet tall and looked to be pretty skinny. I assumed his small size was due to the abuse and neglect he suffered at the hands of his parents. He was also very timid, but I think that was a trait that could be worked on as he grows up.

Based on our short meeting today, I really couldn't decide which one boy, or two in the case of the twins, I most wanted to adopt. The thought that popped in my head during our meeting that I kept to myself was why don't I just adopt all four? I knew it was premature to think that way since an adoption of any of them was not yet guaranteed, but there it was anyway. I would have to seriously consider the option as things progressed. In my mind, if I could take in one of them, then why wouldn't they allow all four to become my sons? I tried to reason with myself that I really wasn't prepared for one, let alone four, but I kept coming back to my biggest concern: if I wasn't allowed to adopt all four, then what would happen to the others? Would they end up living in foster homes until they turned 18? I wasn't prepared to let that happen, but I knew the chances of adopting all were slim to non-existent. I would have to wait until after their weekend visit and then discuss the possibility with Anna and see what she thought.

I finally realized that the movie had ended and the television turned itself off. I was so deep in thought about the boys that I totally missed when it happened. If I'm this scatter-brained now, I can't imagine what I will be like when there are kids in the house all the time. It was getting late and since I had a meeting in the morning with Mike the pool guy, I headed for my bedroom, crawled under the covers and hoped for a peaceful night's sleep.
