Chapter 14 - Is This the End?

Shortly after I'd eaten breakfast with the family on Sunday, Brad asked to speak with me.  Reid immediately started to follow us, so his father turned to him and spoke.

"Reid, I want to talk to Quinn about the court summons, so I'm asking you to let us do that alone.  It shouldn't take very long, but I want to go over everything with him and don't want any interruptions."

"But I'll be quiet..." except Brad cut him off.

"Don't argue with me on this.  You spend lots of time alone with him, so just let me do the same now."

Reid wasn't happy, judging from the 'just swallowed a lemon' expression on his face, although he relented.  I think he was concerned about what his father might do if he didn't agree to what he'd been asked.  Brad and I then walked to my apartment, shut the door, and locked it.

"Are you sure you want to handle this on your own?" he asked, once we'd sat down.

"Yes.  I've been the most involved, and I've talked to each of the people the old man sent here to investigate, but I also have a good idea on how we should handle this."

"Do you want me to hire an attorney to go with you?"

"I don't think that will be necessary and would merely be a waste of money.  If this doesn't go like I want or expect, then I'll just ask for a continuance so I can obtain an attorney."

"I hope you know what you're doing."

"So do I, but after talking to everyone who came to look at the fence after receiving a complaint, I think we have a strong chance of getting this dismissed."  I then went on to explain to Brad exactly what I was planning to do.

"Ok, that sounds fine, and I think you're right about this, but when are you going to do everything?"

"I have three days left before we go to court, so I'll get the directions for each place I need to get to so I can drive there.  It will also be a good way for me to learn my way around, so I'll basically be killing two birds with one stone."

"Actually, I hope nothing gets killed, including us and this fence.  The old guy seems to be a little unhinged at times, so I hope this ends his obsession."

"I think it will hit him where he'll feel it the most, in the bank account, especially if he hires a lawyer and then loses.  I have no idea about his finances, but most older folks watch their expenses closely, so they don't run out of money before they die."

"Yeah, you might be right about that, so I hope this is the last time we hear from him."

"Yeah, me too."

As soon as we finished our discussion, we went back to their part of the house, and Reid came charging over to me the minute I stepped through the door.  "Are you done now?"

"Yes, we've discussed the issues for the time being."

"Good.  I thought it would take you longer than that."

"I wasn't sure, but I'm glad you didn't argue with your father.  If you had, it could have ended badly."

"Why?  What would he have done?"

"I had a feeling he was ready to limit how much time you spent with me. He's been very good about this, so I hope you're smart enough not to rock the boat."

"We're not in a boat."

"It's just a saying that means to cause trouble or create a problem, like a person standing up in a small boat or the waves crashing against a boat in a storm."

"Ok, I see now and I promise I won't do nothin' that will keep us from being together."

"Maybe you should ask your English teacher about the use of 'double negatives' too."

"Huh?"

"That's when you use two negative words in the same sentence.  What happens is the two negatives cancel each other out and makes it a positive, so when you said 'I won't do nothing', you basically were saying 'you would do something'."

"But I won't.  I promise!"

"I know, but what I'm saying is that you phrased your comment incorrectly."

"So what should I have said?"

"What you meant to say was, 'I won't do anything', not nothing."  He thought about this briefly.

"Ok, I see now."

I figured that was enough of a grammar lesson for today, so I went off with him to do what he wanted.  To my surprise, he merely wished to be with me, but he didn't really have anything in mind that he wanted to do.  Therefore, I asked him how school was going and if he'd thought about joining any clubs or playing a sport.  He looked at me oddly for a few seconds before he answered.

"I only know a few people at school so far, and they're mostly the really smart ones in my Advance Classes.  Most of them don't seem like they'd be into sports, but there are a few that might be.  If this school is like my old one, it seemed the same group of kids played on all the teams."

"So you're not interested in sports?"

"Yeah, I like playing them in P.E., and I like watchin' the games on TV sometimes or going to watch the school teams play other schools, but being on a team takes too much time and I'd rather spend it with you."

"Look, you'll only get this opportunity once in your lifetime, so I don't want you to miss out just because of me.  We'll have lots of time together, even if you want to do some other things.  I'll even watch you play, if you make a team."

"I know, but I don't want to do it."

"Then how about joining a club or doing some other things?"

"I was thinkin' about joining the writing club," he added with a huge grin.  "But if I do that then I'll have to take the late bus home, which means I wouldn't get here until right before my mom and dad get home from work.  Otherwise, I'd need to find my own ride home.  I guess I could probably ask Mom or Dad to pick me up on their way here, but that still means I'd get home really late."

"I could always pick you up too."

"What about Evan and Ashley?  You watch them until Mom and Dad get here."

"That's true, but I could bring them with me when I pick you up."

"So you wouldn't mind doin' that?"

"Not at all.  I think it's great that you share your father's and my interest in writing, so maybe one day you'll be doing what we do for a living.  That is if you learn to stop using double negatives."  I laughed after saying this, while Reid made a face.

"I don't do that very often."

"I know, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to tease you."

"Ok, I'll try to find out more about the writing club then.  Maybe I'll do that."

"And once you find out how much work is involved in writing a story or screenplay, maybe you'll stop bugging me."  I laughed again.

"You like me buggin' you about most things, like when we're in your room at night."

"Yes, I certainly do, and I'd really miss it if we didn't do those things any more."

"You mean the sex?" he asked in a hushed voice.

"That and kissing and cuddling with you in bed.  I really like doing those things a lot."

"Yeah, me too."

Once this had been cleared up, I told Reid I'd drive him to school this week, so he could show me how to get there.  When he started to complain that I didn't need to get up that early and do that, I told him I had to get up anyway, because I had errands to run, so this would allow me to start learning my way around.  I could tell he really liked the idea, though, because he was practically glowing after I'd mentioned it, but he was also trying not to take advantage of me.  Sometimes he could be so thoughtful.

Reid then got his backpack so he could do his homework while also spending time with me, so I hopped on my laptop to write down the directions I'd need to get around to the other places.  Once I finished doing that, I went to work on the story again.

We did that until we were called out to join the family for dinner, and then we went to watch TV together next.  We all enjoyed watching 'Once Upon a Time', because even though it was about fairy tales that the younger kids could relate to, the plot twists kept the rest of us interested too.  It also gave a new take on the old tales and intertwined characters from vastly different stories, so it kept it interesting.

Once the program ended, Pam took Evan and Ashley upstairs to get ready for bed, while the rest of us stayed to watch another show.  Reid and I were not really paying attention to it, but we sat shoulder-to-shoulder until it ended.  Before we left Brad alone, I mentioned my plan of driving Reid to school this week, which caused Brad's eyebrows to raise in surprise, as he looked at me questioningly.  After I'd explained my reasoning, he merely nodded and agreed that would be fine, so Reid and I went to shower and turn in too.

Brad must have mentioned my plan to Pam before they went to sleep, because it didn't seem to faze her at all when I mentioned it in the morning.  Since Ashley went to the same school, I agreed to let her come along, and then Evan asked if I'd take him to his school too.  I wasn't sure about doing this, because I knew he went to a different school and I didn't know where it was, but Pam jumped to my rescue.

"Evan, you'll get there way too early if Uncle Quinn takes you, and he has other things he wants to do today, so he can't sit around and wait to make sure you're ok."

Evan wasn't happy about this, but he agreed to ride the bus as usual.  It wasn't a big deal, since he always rode on a different bus than Ashley and Reid, but he just felt they were getting to do something special.  I ended his disappointment by promising to give him his bath on the days I took the other two to school, so everyone was happy again.  Well, maybe Reid wasn't thrilled, since bathing Evan would be cutting into our time alone.

That was the routine we followed for the next three days.  I drove Reid and Ashley to school first, ran the errands I had planned for the day, and then came home to spend time with the family.  I gave Evan his bath later, doing my best to make it fun for him, and then I'd shower with Reid before we cuddled together in bed.

Wednesday night, Brad asked if I was set for court the next day, and I assured him I was.  I then patted the thin briefcase I carried when I attended meetings with my agent or publisher, to let him know that everything I needed was inside.  He merely nodded and wished me good luck.

I had quite a bit of time to kill after I'd dropped the kids off at school, because I was told that our case wouldn't be called until 2:00 that afternoon.  Since the courthouse was in a different part of town, I decided to check out what else was nearby as I wiled away the morning.  Later, after stopping to have lunch, I drove to the courthouse and found a spot in the parking garage.  Then, I located the correct courtroom and waited for the case to be called.

When it was, I had to move to the front of the room and take my place at one of the tables, as we waited for the judge to begin.

"Is the Plaintiff ready?"

"Yes, Your Honor.  Stanley Morgan, Esquire, representing the Plaintiff."  I was suddenly a little concerned when I noted the formal attitude of the proceedings and the fact that the neighbor had hired a lawyer.

"Is the Defendant ready?"

"Yes, Your Honor.  I'm representing myself."

"So you are the homeowner involved in this suit?"

"No, but I also reside at the house and was the one who was served with the summons.  I'm also the one who took care of adhering to the requirements concerning the fence in question."

"Then if you're both ready, let's begin."

The Plaintiff's attorney then stated that his client believed the fence in question was an eyesore, deprived him of the view he'd enjoyed prior to its completion, and that he believed it was illegally constructed.  I just summarized what he'd said, since the attorney was quite long winded, and when he finished the judge turned to me.

"Would you like to respond?"

"Yes, Your Honor.  First of all, I'd like to explain why we felt we had to resort to putting up the fence in the first place."  I then went on to tell him what had happened that Sunday afternoon.

"I have with me copies of the documentation I procured from Code Enforcement and the Zoning office concerning their requirements for building the fence, along with the relevant building permits.  After the plaintiff complained to those departments later, they sent someone out to investigate, and I have a notarized copy of their findings, along with their consent and contact information if you have any questions for them.  The plaintiff also sent the local police department out to investigate, and I have a copy of the report the officer filed after her visit as well."

"Would you please hand those items to the bailiff so I can inspect them?"

"Yes, Your Honor," I agreed as I handed the paperwork to the court official.

He then passed everything along to the judge, who looked them over quite closely.  When he finished, he looked up and spoke to the attorney.  "Mr. Morgan, did you know that your client had filed these complaints and each time was informed, in person, that the fence was legal and met all the requirements?"

"He advised me that he'd filed complaints, but he didn't share the details of those visits."

"And you didn't bother to ask or check with those agencies?"

"No, Your Honor.  I relied on my client for that information."

"Then you're as incompetent as he is.  I'm dismissing this case and ordering that your client, the Plaintiff, pay all court related expenses.  I also want you to instruct your client that I'm ordering him to cease and desist from harassing his neighbors concerning this fence, unless he wants to be held in contempt of court."

As soon as the judge slammed down his gavel, we left the courtroom and I saw the attorney chatting with our neighbor in the hallway.  The old man hadn't been in the courtroom during the proceeding, so I wasn't sure if his attorney had told him he wasn't needed, or if he felt the man's violent outbursts might have impacted the judge's ruling.  Either way, he hadn't heard what had happened and his lawyer was explaining it to him.  As I was exiting the building, I heard the neighbor screaming at his attorney and could only chuckle as I passed through the door.

Well, that was Round Four, and I hoped this would put an end to this fight.  I knew our neighbor obviously wasn't satisfied with the outcome, but since he'd lost at all levels, I hoped he'd just give up.  I doubted his lawyer would take this to the next level, and I was convinced that an appeals court wouldn't hear the case, so I felt this should end any further problems.  Besides, the judge threatened to hold him in contempt if he didn't desist, so I doubted the old guy would be willing to spend time in jail to continue his objection.

That evening while we were eating dinner, I explained to Brad and Pam about my appearance in court.  They both seemed very pleased by what they heard and how I'd handled the situation.

"He certainly is a stubborn old coot," Brad stated.  "Hopefully, this will get him off our backs now."

"Yes, because he not only has to pay his attorney, but he was ordered to pay all related court costs as well, plus the judge threatened to hold him in contempt if he continued."

"Does that mean he'll be put in jail?" Reid asked.

"That's one possibility, or he could face a substantial fine.  I'm not sure how much money he has, but he's already had to shell out quite a bit just for today, so I hope he isn't willing to give up even more."

"Are you going to sit outside to make sure he doesn't try something else tonight?" Reid continued.  I wasn't sure if he was worried about me staying up or not being able to sleep with me this evening.

"No, I don't think that will be necessary.  I'm hoping he's smart enough to just let this drop."

"Are you still taking us to school in the morning then?"

"I wasn't planning on doing that.  I think I know my way around now, and I don't have any more errands to run, so would you mind riding the bus again?"

"No, I guess that would be alright."  Even though he'd just agreed, I could see he was definitely disappointed.

"You don't need your Uncle Quinn doing that for you any longer," Pam added.

"I know, but it was nice not having to ride the bus."

After dinner, Reid went to finish his homework while I spent time with the rest of the family.  He was still working in his room when I took Evan up to give him his bath, fulfilling the promise I'd made to him.

"You can give me my bath tomorrow too," he said as he was getting in the tub.

"The next two nights, in fact, since it will be the weekend again."

"I'm glad.  I like it when you give me a bath, and it's better than havin' you take me to school in your car."

"You know something?  I like it better too."  This earned me a huge grin as I started to wash him.

Pam and I finished up about the same time, since she had just finished giving Ashley her bath too, so we walked downstairs together.  Then, we sat down with Brad.

"I think I'm slowly losing both of my sons to you," Pam teased.  "I believe that if Evan had his way, he'd be spending as much time with you as Reid does."

"Yes, I've formed a bond with him too, but don't worry, I don't think it's the same type of bond that I have with Reid."

"I think we know that for now," Brad stated, "but I'm beginning to wonder if Evan might wind up wanting you to do something similar with him when he gets older."

"I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I'm a novelty in the house for now, although I don't think that will last forever.  After I've been here for awhile, and as he gets older and becomes involved with his friends and other activities, I'll just become a distant memory."

"So you don't think he's gay too?" Pam followed.

"He's far too young to know yet, but he's never done anything to even remotely give me that impression.  He's just a young boy who likes to have fun when he takes his bath, and I guess I do more screwball things with him than you do."

"Well, that's definitely true," Brad added.  "You've always been a little off and different than most people, but I guess that's why I always liked you too.  Maybe Evan's just like me and admires your goofy attitude."

"Yup, that's me!" I countered, doing my best impression of the Disney character.

"I think I'm beginning to discover what Evan sees in you," Pam added in between giggles.  "I can see why the kids like being around you -- as long as I don't totally lose my sons."

We were still chatting when Reid came downstairs carrying his backpack, ready to have me check over his homework.  I then said goodnight to Pam and Brad, as Reid and I went to my apartment so we could do that.

When I finished going over each of his assignments, I figured Reid would be ready to shower, but he surprised me.  "Hang on a second.  I've got to go talk to my mom and dad about something first."

"Sure, go right ahead."

After Reid took off, I wondered why he hadn't done that earlier, but then I concluded that it must have slipped his mind and he just suddenly remembered whatever it was again.  It wasn't a big deal, so I grabbed my laptop and pulled up the chapter I'd been working on.  I hadn't been at it for very long when Reid returned, so I told him to get undressed, warm up the shower, and I'd join him as soon as I finished what I was doing.  He didn't object and went to do those things, as I put the finishing touches on the section, saved it, and turned off the laptop.

Since Reid had been so cooperative all week and hadn't complained about me giving Evan a bath every night, I decided to do something special for him too.  As soon as we finished washing each other, we dried off and went to get into bed.  Before I pulled the sheet and blanket over us, I looked at him and spoke.

"Seeing you've been so good about sharing me all week, I've decided to give you a reward.  I know I told you we couldn't do anything sexual on school nights, but I'm going to make an exception.  I'm willing to suck you off tonight, but that will be all.  We won't take time for you to do anything to me, because you need your sleep."

"But I like doin' it to you too."

"I know, but not tonight.  It's either that or we'll just wait until tomorrow."

"No, I like it when you do it to me too, so ok.  You can do it to me now, and then we'll do it to each other tomorrow night."

I then kissed Reid briefly, but not for too long, because I didn't want him staying up too late.  Then I quickly moved down to his chest, spent a very short time working on each nipple, and then I kissed my way down his chest to his pubic patch.  I also began to use one of my hands to massage his scrotum as my mouth got closer to that area, so his penis would already be like granite when I reached that area.  Skipping the usual preliminaries, I lowered my head over his twitching pole, which was throbbing with every beat of his heart.

Since we hadn't done anything all week, and I wasn't sure if he'd even been masturbating in between, he unloaded quickly and more forcefully than usual.  When his semen hit the back of my throat, it had more pressure behind it than normal, and possibly there was a greater quantity too.  It caught me by surprise and nearly caused me to choke, but I adjusted rapidly and was able to drink it down without any problems.  As soon as his testicles were completely drained, I moved up to kiss him again before we cuddled together.

"Thanks, I really needed that."

"Yes, I could tell."

After exchanging those brief comments, he spooned into me and I wrapped my arm over his chest, and then we fell into a very deep and contented sleep.
