Coincidence or Faith Chapter 3 Recap: A man, Adam, and a boy, Tim, met on top of a cliff. They were there to kill themselves for one reason or another. They went back to Adam's house, where they fell asleep. Then Tim woke up Adam and said he heard something, and then both heard it. "What was that?" Tim said with a jump at the noise. Adam looked at the clock. Seeing it was almost 5pm, he knew it was probably his dad, although he usually doesn't come on Sundays. "Well, I think it's my dad." Adam said. "Your dad, you still live with your folks?" Tim asked with a smile. "No. This is my house, but he has a key. He comes by every once and awhile to check up on me. Hehe." Adam says, "Oh shit. I don't think he should find us in here though." He then got off the bed and started for the door. "Stay here for now. OK?" Adam said. "All right, but don't take to long, I got to use the bathroom." Tim said. "There's one right through that door." Adam said while pointing to a door and then added, "Just don't flush yet." With that he left, while Tim went toward the other door. Adam walked out of the bedroom and down the hall. He stopped at the end looking to the left and right to see if anybody was there. He heard a noise coming from the kitchen so he went toward it. As he enters it he saw someone bent over looking in the refrigerator. Adam snuck up on the guy and then yelled, "BOO!" Jumping from the scare the guy yells out, "Dammit! What you trying to do?" It was Adam's dad, Don. "Me? You're the one showing up unexpected. Making all kinds of noise." Adam said. "Hehe. Well I needed some help tomorrow and I was by so." Don says, "You up for it?" Don was a roofer. And Adam well wasn't. It wasn't the heights that he didn't like, it was the ladders and the heat. But for his dad, he always overcame that and helped when he could. And right now, he didn't know what to do. He had Tim here and couldn't just leave him by himself. And he should tell his dad, but how? Adam was taking to long answering and his dad noticed it. So before Adam could speak, Don spoke. "So who's the boy?" Don asked. "Tim." Adam replied before he thought. But he recovered and added, "His name is Tim and it's a long story. Do you want to eat supper here? We can talk about it after it." "Sure, what you having?" Don asked. "Well, I don't really know." Adam says, "We can order in pizza or go to the Waffle House." Adam already knew what the answer would be. "Waffle House then." Don said. "I knew you say that." Adam said with a smile. "Well let me go get Tim and get ready to go." "OK, I'll be waiting in the living room." Don said and left the kitchen. Adam went back to his bedroom to get Tim. When he got there Tim was sitting on the bed looking as nervous as one can be. Adam went and sat next to Tim on the bed. Then he said, "Well that was my dad. He knows you are here, don't know how though. He must of came and seen us before you woke up. He's waiting for us. We're going to go to the Waffle House and get something to eat. So get ready." He smiled and gave Tim a sideways hug and added, "Don't worry, everything will turn out all right." "OK." Tim says, "Oh and Adam?" "Hmm?" Adam said. "Thanks." Tim said. "For what?" Adam asked. "Everything." Tim replied. "Hehe. Well I haven't really done anything." Adam says, "But you're welcome none the less. Now get your shoes on and wash up." With that he left the room. Adam then went to the bathroom in the hall to comb his hair. He walked back to the living room, found and put on his hat, then located his shoes and sat down and put them on. And then there was silence. He didn't really know what to say, so he just watched what was on TV that his dad had on. After a few minutes, Tim came into the room. He sat down next to Adam on the couch. "Well time to introduce them anyhow." Adam thought. "Daddy this is Tim. Tim this is my Dad, Don or Mr. O'Reilly which ever you prefer." Adam said. Don got up from his chair, walked over and held out his hand for a shake and said, "Nice to meet you Tim". Tim shook the hand and said, "Same here sir." He looked very nervous and Don could tell. "Sir? You can call me Don. Don't like the sir thing." Don said with a laugh. It seemed to ease Tim some. "Yes sir, I mean Don." Tim said. With that Adam got up, pulling Tim up with him. "Shall we go then." Adam said. Don and Tim nodded in response. They made their way out the door and into Don's pick-up truck. It was big enough to hold all of them and some just in the front seat. So they got in and took off to the Waffle House. It was like a home away from home. Adam has been going there since he was a kid himself. Don still goes everyday at least once but usually two or three times just for coffee. Don knew the waitresses and cooks by names. And most of the regulars too. Adam knew some of them, but he only comes about every third day or whenever his dad asks so he didn't know them as good. They drove in silence, listening to country music on the radio. They finally arrived at Waffle House and went inside. It wasn't to busy, but you wouldn't know that by the noise. They went to an empty booth and sat down. "There's the menu." Adam said pointing to a menu. "Pick anything you want." He added. A waitress named Jessica came up with a cup of coffee and glass of water for Don and a Mr. Pibb, coke's substitute for Dr. Pepper, and a straw for Adam. She then said, "Well, who's this cute one here. Can't be with you two. Hehe. What you want hun?" "Hehe. Jessica this is my friend Tim, Tim this is Jessica." Adam said. "Hello Tim. What you like to drink?" Jessica asked. "Hello ma'am. Do you have Dr. Pepper?" Tim asked. "Well, we got Mr. Pibb. That's what Adam here is drinking." She replied. "Then I'll have that." Tim said. She left and returned with the drink pretty quickly along with another straw. She handed it to him and said, "Here you go. Are yaw ready to order, or do you need a minute?" "Give us a minute. Thanks." Don said and she nodded and left. Don and Adam didn't have to look at the menu, they've been here enough times to know everything on there. So while Tim looked to see what he wanted Don and Adam chitchatted about the work and stuff. After a few minutes Tim chimed in that he knew what he wanted, and Don got Jessica's attention and motioned her over. "All right, yaw ready to order?" Jessica asked. "Yeah." Don answered while Adam and Tim nodded. "OK, what'll it be?" Jessica asks, "You want the usual Adam?" "Yeah, you know me." Adam replied. The usual is a Double Bacon Cheeseburger, Double Hashbrowns scattered and covered, which means messy with cheese. Don doesn't have a usual he varies too much. He got steak and eggs with hasbrowns. Tim winded up getting a chicken sandwich with hasbrowns, scattered and covered. They all ate in pretty much silence; every so often they would chat about something but not for long. After they ate and drank themselves full, they paid their bill and left to go back to Adam's house. After getting back to the house they each took turns relieving themselves in the bathroom. Then they went to the living room to tell Don their story. They sat there in the silence for a few minutes because nobody wanted to start the conversation. Finally Don spoke, "Well?" Adam really didn't know what to do. Should he tell him the whole story, part of it, or just lie. He didn't want to lie. So he was going to try part of the story, if he has to he'd tell the whole story. "Daddy, I need to tell you something.umm.it's something hard for me to say. So I need you to not say anything till I'm done. OK?" Don nodded. And Adam continued "Well last night I was going to kill myself." "What!? Why?" Don asked before Adam could say any more. "Daddy, I said I need you wait till I'm done. I'll get to the reason." Adam said. Don sat up and just nodded. Adam went on to tell Don that he's been depressed for along time. He's been having nightmares for awhile, but lately it's been every night and he just couldn't handle it. It just got to the point where he just couldn't deal with anything anymore so he decided to kill himself. So he went up to the cliff that he goes star watching on and was going to do the deed. But instead he met Tim there, who was there for the same reason. Tim was going to kill himself too. They talked and decided to come back here. By then the sun was up and they was tired so Tim slept in the bed and Adam on the couch, until Tim had a nightmare waking up Adam. Adam comforted Tim, and Tim asked him to sleep in the bed with him. So he did. Then Tim woke Adam back up saying he heard a noise and you know the rest. By the time Adam got done every one had tears running down their faces. Don got up and gave both Adam and Tim hugs. And then Don said, "I can't believe that you were going to do that." He went and sat back down and then said, "One thing though. Why? What were you so depressed about that you were going to do that, either of you?" "Shit. Now what do I say? Guess I better go ahead and tell him." Adam thought then said, "Daddy, I'm.I like boys. I wouldn't ever hurt any, so please don't think that. I don't know how to really explain it. But knowing that you would hate me, and that I'd never find someone to love and love me back. Well it's depressing and knowing that there's nothing I could do about it well that's worse. I just couldn't handle it. I'm sorry." By now Adam was crying again and Tim moved closer and gave him a hug. Don was just sitting there with no expression on his face. Finally Don got up and walked over to Adam and the next thing you knew. He.
