His head was throbbing and his mouth felt like something had died in it. His stomach also felt queasy. He felt bad about how he had talked to Joe. Devyn knew he had not been fair to Joe. Devyn was not sure why he had overreacted to Joe's concern. "Was it concern or control?" he wondered. He could remember how Tom had controlled him. Was that it. Was he transferring his feelings about Tom to Joe? Tom's control had started off slowly. It had started with that shopping trip and tom picking out Devyn's clothes. It had continued to grow more complete. Devyn did not want to give anyone that control over him again. He had given Tom that power and he was not going to let someone else be able to control him. The stuff Tom had him doing was not something Devyn wanted to do again. He tried telling himself that Joe was not Tom. Joe would never expect him to do the things that Tom had forced him to do. "I almost wish he would," Devyn thought. "He's so damn hot. I definitely would not mind having sex with Joe. It would be nothing like how I was forced to perform for Tom" Devyn wanted to fix things with Joe and he also needed a shower. He wanted back the relationship they had last summer. He also wanted to fit in. He wanted to forget how his life was before. Devyn stood and stripped off his clothes from the night before. They still smelled like smoke and cow shit from the barn. "If Joe would only let us be more than just friends," Devyn thought. He could still remember the heat of the man's body when he had touched him. "Maybe I shouldn't have stopped with just that touch," Devyn thought. He wondered if maybe when Joe was drinking the man might be more susceptible to being seduced. "You're crazy," he told himself as he looked in the mirror. Devyn heard Joe downstairs and decided the man was up. He should go apologize. He had not been fair to Joe. He knew that. He headed downstairs to take a shower. By the time Devyn got downstairs, Joe was no longer in the kitchen, so Devyn went into the bathroom and hopped into the shower. The water felt good as he let it cascade over his skin. All too soon he stepped out of the shower. He was still feeling a bit queasy as he walked out of the bathroom in his briefs. "Morning," Joe said. "Hi," Devyn said. "How do you feel?" Joe asked. "Um, well, not so great," Devyn said looking down at the floor. "I, um, want to, um, say I am sorry for how I acted last night. I, um, was a jerk." "Yes, you were," Joe said. "Apology accepted." "Are we okay?" Devyn asked. He had been worried that Joe and his relationship might have been damaged. "Well, we need to work out a couple of things," Joe said. "But first let me tell you that we will always end up being okay." Joe moved closer and placed a hand on Devyn's bare shoulder. "I think we do need to have some ground rules." "Ground rules," Devyn said considering the expression on Joe's face he added, "Um, sure." Devyn felt his body responding to the warmth of Joe's touch. "First," Joe said, "no drinking. No drugs of any kind." "There is nothing wrong with a few beers," Devyn said. "You drink." "No, no beers Devyn," Joe said. "I want this clear. You are not 21 and you are not legal to drink. When you reach 21 you can decide for yourself but right now that decision is not yours to make." "But you and Lee," Devyn began. "Lee and I are older," Joe said. "I would think after how sick you got this past summer you would not want to touch beer or any other drug." Devyn knew Joe had a point. That part of the summer was something Devyn did not want to repeat. "alright," he said reluctantly. "Also..." Joe said. "There is more?" Devyn said. The annoyance was obvious in his voice. "Yes," Joe said. "You cannot stay out any later than midnight on the weekend and ten pm during the week." "What? That isn't fair...those aren't..." Devyn said becoming defensive. "I am not debating this," Joe said. "We have to have rules. You do not know how worried I was about you last night. I think for now the 10 and 12 are very fair. We can see about extending them after we see how things go." "Right," Devyn said and he pulled away from Joe. "I am not trying to be hard on you," Joe said. "Yeah, sure," Devyn said and started up the stairs. "Do you want breakfast?" Joe asked. "No, I aint hungry," Devyn answered. "Then I could use your help in the barn," Joe said. "Okay," Devyn called back. Devyn could feel the tension in the house. He knew he was partly to blame but he also blamed Joe. Devyn believed that joe was being unreasonable. "He's just trying to control me," he thought. Devyn began cutting class with Terry or Dewayne. He just did not care about school. He was still getting decent grades as he had already taken most of the classes before. He started hanging out at Terry's house after school. They would have a couple beers before Terry's folks got home and then go and drive around a bit. Devyn kept breath mints in his pocket to cover the smell of the beer on his breath. "I would like it if you would start coming straight home from school for the next few days," Joe said one night during dinner. "The beans are ready to cut and I could use your help. I also thought you might help me out this weekend. I'll show you how to run the combine and then I can haul the wagons off when they are full." "I have a lot of stuff to do," Devyn said. "I am sure you do, but it would help me out. I have been letting you slack off on your chores..." "Okay, I'll get home as soon as I can tomorrow." Joe did not understand what had happened to his and Devyn's relationship. He thought during the summer they had grown close. He genuinely cared for Devyn and he had hoped that Devyn had returned some of those feelings of friendship. Now he was not so sure. He wondered if there was a problem at school. Devyn came right home from school on the bus. Terry and Dewayne were not in school, so he had no other plans. He knew he should be nicer to Joe. The man had done a lot for him. He just was feeling cranky. He needed some of the pills that Tom use to give him. He needed...he was not sure what he needed. Joe gave Devyn a refresher on how to operate the combine and let him cut several rounds of beans with Joe riding shot gun just in case Devyn had any problems. Devyn was a quick study and soon Joe trusted him to run the machine solo. He drove the two wagons of beans to the grain elevator while Devyn continued to fill the other one. Devyn could feel that closeness with Joe that he had experienced over the summer. It felt almost like they were getting some of their old connection back. "Was it all my fault that we lost part of this?" Devyn wondered as he drove the machine and Joe stood there next to him. It felt so good having the man's praise and even better having the physical contact. The two worked until dark and the beans grew too tough to continue to cut. They went to the house. Devyn was still tense. He still did not quite feel like he had during the summer. He felt like he fit in until he went back to school. He wondered if he should have pushed the dropping out topic. Joe had felt like he and Devyn were making a connection on the combine. He thought that part of what they had shared during the summer was coming back. Then after he got back from hauling off the grain Devyn had closed him out again. He was not sure of the right thing to say. He was not sure how to pull Devyn back from the dangerous path he saw the boy starting down. Devyn studied Joe across the dinner table. The man was looking tired these days. "He needs to go out and have some fun," Devyn thought. "You alright," Joe asked noticing Devyn looking at him. "There is a party tomorrow night," Devyn said. "I would like to go. It is Friday after all." "I could use some more help," Joe said. "They are calling for rain next week, and I would like to get as much of the crop harvested as we can." "It is only one night," Devyn said. "I'll work all day Saturday." Joe contemplated for a few minutes and the relented. "Okay, you can go...just don't forget that you need to be back home at 12." "yeah, about that," Devyn said. "None of the other guys have curfews that early. Couldn't we make it 2 on the weekend? "I don't think so," Joe said. "A couple of hours won't make any difference," Devyn argued. "Then you don't need it changed. If the two hours don't make a difference." "You know what I mean," Devyn snapped. "Devyn 12 is as late as I am going," Joe said. "Fine," Devyn said. He rose from the table. "I got homework to get done." Joe listened as the boy stomped up the stairs. Joe still did not understand what had happened to his and Devyn's relationship. Before school had started, they had grown so close. It had been like having a little brother around. "You know what goes on at those parties," Lee said to Joe Friday afternoon. Lee had been helping Joe with the farming and had seen Devyn leave with Terry. "Probably the same things that were going on at the parties when we were kids," Joe said. "I think you need to take care of this now," Lee said. "You are being too easy on him." "I'm dealing with it," Joe said. "He may just be a bad kid," Lee said. "He's had it rough," Joe said. "He deserves a chance to come to terms with it." "Like you did?" Lee asked. "He has it harder than I did," Joe said. "I had Hannah and my best friend." "I can't believe anyone has it harder than what you did," Lee said. "Don't forget that I was there." "He is all alone," Joe said. "I wasn't. That makes a big difference." Joe's blue eyes met Lee's. Their friendship had only grown stronger over the years. "I don't want you to get hurt," Lee said. "Oh, you do care," Joe said grinning the teasing tone in his voice. "God only knows why," Lee said. The two had a couple beers after the sun went down. "You want me to come back tomorrow?" Lee asked. "Devyn's going to give me a hand tomorrow," Joe said. "You should spend some time with Melissa." "Alright, but call if you need help," Lee said. By the time Devyn and Terry got to the barn, the party was already going. Devyn thought there were more people there than normal. Most of them he did not really know. The music was loud and the air smelled like smoke and beer. "I bet Mindy will be wanting your services again," Terry told Devyn. "You think so," Devyn said. "Oh, fuck yea man. I heard it that you gave her a double climax...Stud!" Devyn felt his face grow warm. He had only done that because he had been watching Dewayne pound the brains of another girl. Devyn was not sure he would be able to maintain an erection without that kind of motivation. "Just stay clear of Trish," Terry said. "I hear she is pissed." "Damn," Devyn said. He really had not intended to hurt Trish. She seemed nice enough. He would have rather hooked up with her than Mindy. He had just been drunk and not thinking clearly. "Maybe Joe is right," he thought. "Maybe I need to lay off the beer." "Here, guys," Dwayne's brother Wally said. "Give this a try." He passed Terry a pipe. "It is good shit." Terry took a hit and passed it on to Devyn. Devyn was hesitant to take his turn. "Go on," Wally said. "This one is free. Don't be a pussy." Devyn took the hit. He then had a can of beer pushed into his hand. The pipe came back to him and he drew in another lung full through the pipe. He could feel the buzz start. He pushed the thoughts of Joe out of his mind. He needed to do this to fit in. He needed to do this so he could perform for Mindy or Trish or whoever. Joe had been tossing in bed for a couple of ours. Looking at the clock he saw it was two in the morning. He kicked off the covers and started to pace. He considered calling Lee. He knew Lee would know where these parties are. He could go there and pull Devyn out. Of course, that would only increase the Chasm between them. He would have been royally pissed if anyone had done that to him. He looked at the clock and saw it was now three and Devyn still was not home. He kicked the trash can and sent trash sliding across the floor. "Fuck!" he said. Barkley jumped up and went into the living room. He glanced at Joe and whimpered. "I didn't mean to scare you." Joe followed the dog into the living room. Reaching down he rubbed the dog's ears. "What are we going to do about him?" Barkley let out a loud sigh from the ear massage. It seemed to say, "I don't know but keep doing that." Copyright 2020 by Keith yates (keith.96@att.net) all rights reserved.
