Joe asked after it seemed like Devyn was not going to volunteer any more information. "it was definitely on my mind," Devyn said. "I really couldn't think of much else. We never talked about what we were feeling. We talked about everything else." "Did you continue dating the girls?" Joe asked. "yes," Devyn said. "I felt a little guilty about that. I knew Sue had stronger feelings for me than I did for her." "It was good to explore that," Joe said. "It was comfortable," Devyn said. "The four of us always had fun when we were together. I just wish..." "What did you wish?" Joe prompted when Devyn had paused. "I wish I could have felt for Sue what I was feeling for Brent," Devyn said in a rush. "I wanted to feel for her like that. It would have been easier. Life would have been easier." "You can't change those feelings," Joe said. "The heart feels what it feels." "it would have been easier," Devyn muttered. "So, you didn't talk to Brent about your feelings," Joe said. "You said you didn't talk about that sort of stuff with your parents." "No, I couldn't talk to them about girls," Devyn said. You wouldn't talk to your folks about girls," Joe said glancing over at the teenager. "you didn't talk to Brent about the feelings the two of you were having and there wasn't anyone you could talk about being gay." Joe understood how much of a struggle it must have been for Devyn. He wished he had known the boy sooner so he could have helped him before things got out of control. "You really had no one to talk to then," Joe said. "There was one person," Devyn said thinking about Matt. "My dad worked for a local construction company," Devyn said. "He was the site manager. It was cool when I was younger and would go with him to work. I liked seeing the building going up." There was something about the way a building went together that fascinated Devyn. It was hard to believe the frame he would look at would become an office complex or a school or some other structure. Since Devyn had started high school, he had fewer opportunities to go to one of the sites with his Dad. He spent more of his time with Brent and some with Sue. On a Saturday shortly before thanksgiving, Devyn rode with his Dad to one of the construction sites. Devyn was always impressed with the respect the other men gave his Dad. They called him Sir or Boss. It was obvious to Devyn they all respected his Dad. Devyn carried several boxes from the truck into the construction site office for his Dad. On his last trip, he ran into a very handsome looking man. The guy was probably six feet tall with a red brown main of hair that was thick and wavy. "Hi," Devyn said as he almost ran into the good-looking guy. The man's emerald green eyes met Devyn's brown gold ones and he smiled. "Hi, you must be the boss's kid." "Yeah Devyn," he said smiling back. "Do you need a hand with that?" The man asked indicating the heavy box Devyn was carrying. "No, thanks I got it." Devyn carried the box into his father's office. His dad was on the phone in a discussion with someone, so Devyn sat the box next to the others and returned to the outer office. The good-looking man with the reddish-brown hair and beard was still there. Devyn looked over his back, the big shoulders and the way it sloped down to his narrow hips. "Well, that was quick," he said. "Dad's on the phone," Devyn said. Want me to show you around the site?" The man smiled as he offered to show Devyn around. "Yeah, that would be great." Devyn's answer was enthusiastic but not as excited as he felt in his stomach. " By the way, my name is Matt Chancellor," he said holding out his hand. Devyn took the strong hand and shook it. The feeling of the calluses on his palm and the firm squeeze sent a shiver up Devyn spine. "My name is Devyn," Devyn said as he tried to repress the heat that seemed to start building in his crotch. "Come on let's go," Matt said putting a hand on Devyn's shoulder and leading him through the office door. Matt showed Devyn around the site and explained the design process he used when putting the building down on paper. "So, then you're the architect?" Devyn asked. "Yes, guilty as charged," Matt said. "So that must be a really cool job," Devyn said. "I enjoy it most of the time, but it can get frustrating sometimes. Sometimes the last-minute changes I must make can get on my nerves. It would be nice if everything went up as easy as it can go onto the paper." "Oh, so you had to make changes to the original design on this building," Devyn asked. "Yep, and your Dad wasn't happy about it. We had a bit of a disagreement over it. He seems to think that I am trying to be what he calls to artsy. I guess he would like all buildings to be square blocks." "Well, I guess that would make building them easier." Devyn felt a bit uncomfortable about the way Matt talked about his dad. Matt didn't say anything negative just that the two had disagreed. It was more something Devyn picked up in the tone of Matt's voice. He did not seem to have the same respect as the other men had for Devyn's father. "Would you like to see another building I am designing?" Matt asked as they headed back toward the office. "Sure," Devyn said. Devyn followed Matt back into the office and over to the design table. Matt picked up a narrow cylinder from the floor and pulled the end off. He pulled out a rolled-up sheet of paper and spread it out on the worktable. Matt moved aside a bit so Devyn could see the blueprint from the right position. He stood their next to Matt and listened as Matt explained different parts of the design. "It's going to be a very cool looking museum," Devyn said. "Yeah, I hope it turns out like I have it pictured in my head." Matt was standing on Devyn's right side with his hand resting on Devyn's left shoulder as he pointed out another part of the design. Devyn could feel his body growing warmer. The warm hand on his shoulder and the friendliness of this man were causing Devyn to feel things until now he had only felt for Brent. "Take your hand off my son," Frank barked from the doorway of his office. "Hey Dad, Matt was just showing me..." Devyn's voice trailed off as he looked at the thunderstorm on his father's face. He was confused as to why his dad would be upset with anything he had done. He wondered if maybe Frank had been waiting on him and was pissed Devyn had been goofing off with Matt. "I was just," Matt begun to explain but was cut short. "I have a damn good idea what you were trying to do. I know all about what you are, and I won't have it on my job any longer." Frank's voice was loud and full of dislike for Matt. There was no doubt that Frank loathed the man standing next to Devyn. Unlike Frank, Matt kept his voice firm but in a normal conversational tone. "I don't know what you think you know or what you think was going on here. I was just showing Devyn around the site and my plans for another building." Devyn had never seen his father so enraged. He had never seen the look of disgust and dislike on his face before. It made Devyn feel a bit scared of his own father. The man he had always found as loving and caring looked like a raging nut case. "Move away from my son. I won't have you touching him like that. I won't have you trying to...to corrupt him." "Dad, he was just showing me the plans. Nothing else. He's been completely nice." Devyn's explanation did nothing to settle Frank's anger. Devyn was at a complete loss. He had instantly connected with Matt and his Father's dislike for the man was baffling to Devyn. Matt had done nothing wrong that Devyn could figure out. "Don't let him fool you son," frank said his voice a little more normal when he spoke directly to Devyn. "He is not what he appears. He is evil. He is disgusting. He is a pervert and would molest you if I hadn't been here." "What!" Devyn said his eyes springing wide with shock. Devyn took a step away from Matt and saw a quick spark move across those emerald green eyes. The man was boiling mad underneath his outward appearance of calm. "Matt focused his fool laser like gaze on Frank. His voice was like steel. It was obvious he was maintaining a tight control on his temper. "I do not know exactly what you think you know. I can only imagine what it is that is running through your mind, but..." "Oh, I found out all about you," Frank said glaring at Matt. "I have known for a while now, but I kept quiet. We needed you to get this job done. We needed your fucking designs, but I won't put up with you molesting my kid. I won't have it. You are fired and I want you out of here. I won't have some fucking faggot working here any longer." "My sexual orientation has nothing to do with my work here or anywhere else," Matt said his voice like steel. "As far as molesting your son or any other child, that is completely insane. I have no interest in little boys." Matt could not help but add with a quirk to his lips because he knew it would just tick Frank off more, "I only like to fuck men." Devyn just stared at Matt. He did not know what to say or do. He could not believe it. This man wearing the jeans and the work shirt and boots was gay. This man who looked more macho than some of the regular guys on the construction site was gay. Devyn was having trouble wrapping his mind around it. His only experience with gay men was through TV and this guy did not fit into that mold at all. He was nothing like the gay guys portrayed in movies or television. "You can't be gay," Devyn said. "You don't act like, like, like that." "He is pretending to be a man," Frank said. "He is pretending that he is normal. But he is a fucking queer. He is one of those faggots. I got the story straight from his last job sight." Matt could only imagine the story frank had gotten. That job had been out in the middle of nowhere. He lived on the sight with the rest of the construction crew. He did not do anything with any of the guys, although he thought a couple of them would have been more than open to the idea. Matt had met a nice guy in the nearby town. He was the bar tender at the local bar. Very nice looking with the bluest eyes Matt had ever seen. They had hit it off right away. Matt had begun to make the long drive every weekend into town. He would spend his night sitting at the bar and talking with the hot guy and then driving back to his trailer on the construction site. It was not long before Matt began spending nights at the bartender's apartment and in the bartender's bed. They became lovers and enjoyed the closeness and comfort only two men can give each other. The construction job ran into a couple of problems and got behind. The Forman hired extra help from town and the bartender, Bryan, was among those. He and Matt kept things professional during the day, but at night he would slip over to Matt's trailer and spend the night wrapped up in Matt's arms. It was in the middle of one of these nights when they were sharing their deep caring for each other that the Forman walked in on them. He had stopped by just to discuss a problem with Matt's design and found the two on the edge of sharing their seed with each other. The Forman was shocked and very tense for the rest of the job, but he and Matt managed to work together. They managed to keep things civil even though it was obvious that the man was as strongly disapproving of Matt's lifestyle as frank was. "The guy I was involved with at that job," Matt began, "was a consenting adult. In fact, he is two years older than I am and we are still together." "Then you are...you are gay?" Devyn's voice was full of shock and disbelief. Matt turned his emerald green eyes to Devyn. They held none of the anger or dislike that they had when matt was looking at Frank. Matt's face seemed to soften as he looked at the frightened young teen. "Yes Devyn, I am gay." "I um, I um," Devyn's voice cracked as he tried to think of the right thing to say. He tried to find the words, but his mind was caught up in the whirlwind. "I know it can be shocking," Matt said. "It is okay if you're not sure what to say. I am betting you don't know too many gay people, although I bet you know more than you realize." "Stop talking to my son," Frank barked. "Get your fucking shit and get the hell off this site. Your ass is fired, and you won't work for me again." Matt's voice was firm but calm as he said, "you do not have the authority to fire me. My firm has a signed contract with the developer. You may be able to fire anyone you like from the construction crew, but I do not work for you." "I am sure once I explain that I caught you molesting my kid," Frank said, "that your FIRM will can your faggot ass." "Dad he wasn't," Devyn began. "Shut up Devyn," Frank barked. "You do what you feel you have to," Matt said. "Don't worry I will and come Monday morning your ass will be off my site," Frank said. Frank moved towards the door stepping wide around Matt as if he thought he might have some sort of contagious disease. "Come on Devyn," He said from the door. "We will leave this faggot to himself." Frank was through the door as Devyn moved slowly towards the door. He felt so bad for the way his Dad had talked to Matt. He felt sorry for the man, although Matt seemed to be handling everything very well. "I um, am um, sorry," Devyn said. Matt looked up his green eyes meeting Devyn's brown ones. The golden flecks seemed to sparkle in the light from the open door. "It isn't your fault," Matt said. "You have nothing to apologize for." Taking a couple steps, Matt reached up and gave Devyn's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. Matt pretended not to notice that Devyn tensed up at his touch. The reflex in Devyn hurting Matt more than any of the words Frank had said. Devyn forced himself to relax. He reached up and gave Matt's big hand a squeeze. "Maybe we will run into each other again sometime," Devyn said his voice nervous. "We can talk and stuff." "Anytime kiddo," Matt said flashing Devyn a smile that made Devyn's heart jump. "DEVYN!!" Frank yelled. "Coming Dad," Devyn called and hurried to the door. He paused at the door and looked back at the man he had found himself instantly connecting with. He could not stop liking him and feeling a bond with him. Does it mean I am gay," Devyn wondered as he stepped back out into the bright sun of the Saturday afternoon. "I was shocked by my dad's reaction," Devyn said looking over at Joe. He wondered what the man must think of his dad. "I had never seen him like that before. We never talked about someone being gay. The topic just never came up." "That sounds like quite the situation," Joe said. "It looks like your dad definitely has an issue with gay men." "Yeah, but he's not a bad guy," Devyn said. "Really?" Joe said raising an eyebrow. "I mean he's not like a bad person," Devyn said. "He helps people when he can. He, he," Devyn's voice trailed off. He wondered why he was defending Frank. The man had kicked him out, the man had turned his back on him and Devyn had automatically started defending him. "It is natural," Joe said. "He's your Dad. Dads are often their son's first hero." "I guess," Devyn said. "I just don't know how I am supposed to feel about him." "It is fine if you still love him," Joe said. "you can love someone and still not like them." "Maybe," Devyn said looking out the window as they drove into town. He looked at the houses as they passed. They were all different. Every one of them was either shaped different, had different colored siding, a different roof or something that set them apart from their neighbor. It was nothing like his neighborhood where all the houses were basically the same. "This is going to be our last chance to pick you up the clothes and stuff you need," Joe said. He turned the truck into the parking lot of the Wal-Mart. "I probably also need to pick up some groceries. If we split up it will go faster." "Um, sure," Devyn said. He looked nervous and a bit scared. "We don't have to split up," Joe said picking up on Devyn's apprehension. "It won't save us that much time anyway." Devyn felt a bit like a baby not wanting to be separated from Joe. The bond that he had started forming when Joe sat down on that bench at the police station was only growing stronger. Devyn did not know why but somehow the man felt like his lifeline. He wondered why it was but whatever the reason Joe was picking up on it and being understanding. It took them over an hour in Target. Devyn found that he had lost weight and the first pair of jeans he picked out were too big in the waist. He was glad that Joe had insisted that he try them on first. He had to pick out a couple pair that were a smaller size. Unlike Tom, Joe was encouraging Devyn to pick out his own clothes. Tom had always picked out everything Devyn wore. Tom had made sure that each article emphasized Devyn's youthful body and male attributes. Joe however wanted Devyn to decide what the teenager should wear. Devyn ended up with several shirts, new shoes, socks, underwear, and other articles of clothing. They also added shampoo and other personal items to the cart. Devyn was shocked at the total at the register. Joe just swiped his credit card and did not complain. They then headed across the street to the IGA and did the grocery shopping. Joe kept trying to get Devyn to pick out things he wanted to eat, but it was like pulling teeth. "Really Devyn just get what you want," Joe said. "I really don't mind." "I am sure whatever you want is fine," Devyn said. He was trying his best to not be an added burden. After purchasing the groceries, they went back to the pickup. The back seat of the crew cab was loaded down with the purchases. "Is it much further to your place?" Devyn asked after they had been driving for about 30 minutes. "We are almost to Fairdale," Joe said. "That is the nearest town to my house. It is where you will be going to school in a few weeks." "Oh," Devyn said. He had not even thought about school. "You don't live in town?" "No, didn't I mention I was a farmer?" Joe said. "Oh, yeah right," Devyn said. "Do you know anything about farming?" Joe asked. "Um, not really," Devyn said. "It is going to be quite the learning experience for you then," Joe said. Copyright 2020 by Keith Yates (keith.96@att.net) All rights reserved.
