Chapter 27
The day to leave for boarding school approached and I met
it with very mixed emotions. I had a dreaded fear of what I did not know mixed
with an eager anticipation of a new adventure. I looked forward to meeting new
people and hopefully making a new friend or two, but also a deep sense of
loneliness as I watched Lionel and his parents drive out the yard to take him
to his school. Lionel turned in the seat of the bakkie
and waved out of the back window and I could not suppress a tear that ran down
my cheek. Fortunately no-one saw it and I was able to wipe it away with the
back of my hand before heading back inside to change from my shorts and T into
my school uniform.
Phineas came to the room and picked up my trunk and took it out to the double
cab we were going to ride in because we were also going to take Willie and
Johan with us. Stephan was bringing Johan with him and he would stay at the
farm to work with Oom Jakob
while ma and the Durant's were away from it.
With ma driving, there was no chance that anyone could do anything and I rode
up front with her, while Willie and Johan sat in the back seat. There was a bit
of chatter at first but that gradually died down and we spent most of the
journey in relative silence with only the car radio making noise to listen to.
I did see Johan and Willie suddenly move their hands to their sides when I
turned around to talk to them the one time and I am sure they were holding
hands quietly in the back seat, but could never prove it. We stopped at an
Ultra City[i] along the way to eat lunch
and then continued on the journey
We arrived at the school a bit earlier than we had been
advised to and before any of the others. Willie and Johan unloaded their trunks
and balancing one on top of the other carried them into their dormitory between
themselves. The boys who had been at school the previous year had already been
told which dorms they were in. Not that it helped with most of them, but it did
with Willie and Johan. Ma and I went to
the reception table set up in the entrance hall to the hostel and got me
registered in. We had just finished when Willie and Johan came back and offered
to carry my trunk to my dormitory for me. Ma gave Willie the keys to the bakkie and the two of them went out and hoisted my trunk
out for me and carried it in to where ma and I were still standing.
"Which dormitory have they put you in?" Willie asked.
"Kaap 1" I answered not at all sure what that meant.
"That's good because it is on the ground floor and means you don't have to
climb the stairs with your trunk." Johan said.
"Come on and we will show you the way and then you can come back and say bye to
your ma." Willie said.
"They said I had to wait for the prefect." I said nervously.
"It's ok. You can come with us now and then when the prefect is ready, he can
meet you and tell you what he wants. If you come with us now, we can help you
get the best bed." Willie encouraged.
"If you boys are sure it will be ok, go with them Pieter and I will wait
outside by the bakkie." Ma said.
One of the members of staff manning the reception table must have overheard our
conversation and agreed that it was ok for Willie and Johan to take me to my
dorm so I followed behind as they carried my trunk for me.
We had not gone far down the passage that led from the
entrance hall when Willie pointed to the double doors at the end of the passage
and said, "that is your dormitory there, but this is the prefect's room" he
indicated a door to the side of the passage.
"Knock and see if he is in his room, then you can introduce PP to him." Johan
suggested.
Willie moved over towards the door with Johan following as the trunk was still
held between them, and gave a gentle knock on the door. The door opened and a
tall, slender blond haired guy stood in the opening. "What is it, van Rensburg?[ii] I'm busy." He said rather
harshly.
"I wanted to introduce PP to you. This is PP van der Westerhuizen,
the guy I was telling you about last term.
PP this is your prefect, MacKay." Willie completed the
introductions.
"We were just helping him with his trunk and showing him to the dorm. Can he
pick any bed?" Johan asked.
"Hi guy. Why do they call you PP? And no, he gets bed one." John MacKay said.
"They call me PP because my name is Pieter Paulus." I stammered out a bit
nervously.
"No, it is on account of how big his cock was when I first saw it." Willie
said, "But now it is much bigger." He concluded. I blushed and John smiled.
"Don't worry; we will be the judge of that." John said. "Now show van der Westerhuizen to his bed and then you can wait for me near
the entrance."
Willie and Johan turned to move on back down the passage towards the big double
doors with me following closely behind.
"We were going to pick bed one for you anyway. It is the best bed because it
means you are the first in line for everything and so get the better deals. It
also means that you can get out of the dorm without the others knowing when
MacKay wants you, and when he sees your cock he is going to want you a lot."
Johan told me as we neared the door.
Willie used his free hand to turn the handle and swung one half of the doors
open and we walked through into something that was totally strange to me. I had
never been to a dormitory before, neither had I seen a hospital ward, so to see
two columns of beds interspersed with lockers was really a strange sight for
me. Down the middle of the dorm between the two rows of beds were a series of
islands which each had four doors on either side; above each door was a number.
The number corresponded to your bed number and as I had bed one, I also had
cupboard one in the first island. My bed was on the right hand side as you
entered the dorm. There was a narrow walk space between my bed and the wall at
the end of which was my bedside locker. At the foot of the bed was a pile of
sheets, pillows and cases and blankets.
Willie and Johan put my trunk down at the foot of the bed and Willie said,
"Here we will show you how to make a bed and then you can help some of the
others when they arrive. The two boys
quickly had the bedding piled on my trunk and with one either side of the bed
they had the bottom sheet spread out and positioned very quickly. After tucking
this in all the way round, they spread the top sheet and then a couple of
blankets over that and tucked the whole lot in in one go. Showing me how to
make proper hospital corners and turn the sheet down by the pillow end. It did
not take them more than five minutes to make my bed and get the pillows plumped
out in their cases.
With the bed made they helped me to unpack my trunk advising what I should keep
in my bedside locker and what should go in my central cupboard, reminding me
that I needed to keep room in the central one to store my school books. Locking
the two they handed me the key and said that later on our trunks would be
collected up and taken to storage in the trunk room. For the mean time I just
left it on the floor at the foot of my bed and we went back outside to find ma.
In that short space of time, no more than a quarter of an
hour, a lot more cars had arrived to deposit school boys of all ages outside
one or the other of the hostels. The space in front of our hostel was the
busiest though and we had to work our way through quite a crowd of parents and
pupils to find ma, leaning up against the side of the bakkie.
When she saw us she smiled and I walked straight over to her and told her that
I had met the prefect and he seemed stern but that I had got the best bed and
the prefect had said I was to have it. We all stood together with Willie and
Johan talking about different students as they passed us filling us in on what
was likely to happen.
About ten minutes after we had got back to ma, a group of the older students
all came out of the front doors together. John MacKay was amongst them. "Those
are the hostel prefects" Willie told us. "They have come to collect the guys in
their dorm. And that is the house master." Willie finished as a man eased out
from between the group of prefects. "Tannie, PP will have to go with his
prefect soon, so you had better say good bye now." Willie advised.
"Thank you for the ride, tannie." Johan said.
"Ja, thank
you tannie." Willie echoed.
"Bye-bye, Pieter. I will come and collect you all at half term again." Ma said,
bending down to give me a hug. The she whispered in my ear, "I will not kiss
you because the others will tease you if they see that. Now be good and do what
you are told." She finished up a bit more loudly. I hugged her back and turned
away because I was scared I might tear up. I was not at all sure about this
boarding school idea. It was all too much new and not enough that I was
familiar with.
As I turned away, one of the prefects rang a hand bell
and then the house master began to speak.
"If I could have your attention please." He called out
in quite a loud voice and waited for that attention. "I will soon introduce the
dorm prefects one at a time. Then I will call out the names of the students
that will be sharing the dormitory that the prefect is in charge of. Once you
have been called please move forward to form a group with your prefect, who
will then lead you away to your dorm. I
will start with the older boys first and then work down to our newest students.
This meant that Willie and Johan would be in the second or third group. The
first group was made up of the boys in their final year, who had not been
chosen as dorm prefects and the one prefect who was also the head boy for the
school and was the prefect in charge of that dorm. These guys did not really
need a prefect and instead of a single long dorm, they occupied the whole of
the top floor and had semi-private rooms that they shared two boys to a room.
With the exception of the prefect who had his own room which was the same size
as the other's double rooms. They still had a communal shower and ablution
section, but also had their own lounge and study centre. Willie and Johan's dorm was called third and
they left us with both of them telling me that they would help me when they
could.
I stood beside ma just as most of the other new arrivals stood beside their
parent or parents waiting to hear their name called. Ma had her hand resting on
my shoulder and I found this a comfort.
With all but the new students being familiar with this system of sorting people
out, it ran smoothly and soon there were just two prefects left standing on the
steps with the housemaster. The other
prefect was introduced first and twenty names were called out to accompany him
to the dorm that was at the opposite end of the passage my dorm was on. Finally
John was introduced and my name was called in the midst of the other nineteen
dorm mate's names. I was the only one who did not still have a trunk to take
care of and as we set off there was one boy who was noticeably smaller than the
rest of us and he was clearly struggling with his trunk. I did not even think
about it and just went to his aid and helped him. The little guy just smiled at
me in gratitude and we carried on. Some of the others already knew each other
and did the same as Willie and Johan had done piling one trunk on top of the
other with each boy taking a side and setting off.
With the short distance we had to go, we were soon at the doors where John
turned around and said. "Okay, this is your dorm. It is called Kaap 1. I have allocated you to your beds, but once you are
inside, and before you unpack, I will come around to see if anyone wants to
change. Except you van der Westerhuizen, seeing as
you are already unpacked. You will have to make your beds too and van's bed
here is already made so you will be able to see how to do. I suggest you get
together with the person in the bed next to you to make your beds. I will then
leave you for a short while to get settled in and will then come back to take
you on a tour of the hostel and the school."
John went on to allocate people to their beds and then went around and couple
of the guys were shifted around so that friends could be in beds next to each
other. John then left us and went out the dorm.
I had nothing left to do and so moved over to the boy who was in bed two next to me. I introduced myself and offered to help him. We quickly got his bed made up and I explained to him what he should put where from his trunk and moved on to the next bed along giving him a hand to make his bed. He was half way through because the guy in bed four was helping him so the three of us got both beds finished and I told them what to put away where. By this time the others had teamed up and finished their beds also and were all happily packing their trunk contents away. I went back to my bed and began talking to the guy in the bed next to me. We both did not have any brothers or sisters and I told him that I did have some friends who lived on the farm or worked there that were like brothers to me and that was why I had already got unpacked and the bed made before everyone else had arrived. I liked Mark, my dorm neighbour and it seemed like were going to become friends.
John returned and announced that as it was nearly
afternoon tea time, he would take us and show us the dining hall first. There
were three boarding hostels all facing on to the big dining hall building. This
was a double story building with the second floor being storage and office
space. The lower floor was divided into two. One third being
the kitchen and the other two thirds being the dining hall. The dining
hall was big enough to sit nearly four hundred people down for a meal at the
same time. This meant that all three hostels could be fed at the same time.
John explained the protocol that had to be followed for the dining hall and
then led us in our turn into it and up to the service counter. We were given a
cup of some type of cordial and a biscuit each. The cordial was welcome because
I had not had anything to drink since our lunch and I was feeling a bit
parched. After our tea time, John took us on the rounds of the school and gave
us a bit of an aide memoir to use to remember where each section of the school
was to be found. Over the next few weeks I was going to find that very helpful
and was grateful to John for sharing it with us. I later learnt that the other
dorm prefects did not share it with their dormitories.
John finished the tour by taking us around our hostel and showing us where the
study rooms were and which areas we were not allowed to go into. Ending up back
at our dorm, John had us go inside and close the door and then he told us to
gather around while he gave us his rules for the dorm. He also told us about skivvying for him and
some of the other seniors as each of the prefects would come looking for a
skivvy from our year and then after that other sixth formers would look for
skivvies but that he got first choice and would be watching us for the next few
days to see who to pick. With that he told us we had some free time until
supper time when he would come and collect us and that after supper we would
have our showers and get ready for bed.
[i] Ultra City – a large roadside services area usually sited along the motorways at suitable intervals. Some can be found on lesser roads but they would not be as big or as expensive to use.
[ii] Use of Surname – it is the common practice in Secondary schools to use the surname of a person when addressing them. Christian names were only used amongst friends.
