Chapter 29

The next morning was a bit different. Firstly John came in the dormitory and was banging on a tin can. Secondly it was still night time as far as I was concerned. I was not used to going to bed as late as I had and did not feel like I had got enough sleep to be waking up already. Thirdly, I woke with a fright at the noise and was a bit disorientated because of waking in a strange setting.
John's banging lasted maybe five seconds and was not actually that loud but had been enough of a difference to disturb our sleep patterns and so wake us up.
"Ok, all of you, up and with your wash bag in the bathroom and get your teeth brushed and faces washed. I don't suppose any of you need to shave yet so get your pissing in and back in the dorm to dress in ten minutes flat." He ordered.
At first glance this sort of treatment might sound harsh, but what John was doing was forcing us into a practice of sharing. There were only five wash hand basins which meant there were four people to four of them and five to the other as John also had to use them at times. In the morning he didn't because he had already had his shave and wash at the basin in his room and was in fact already dressed in his uniform for the day. We had to learn to have more than one using the basin at the same time and to let others get in while you stood back to brush your teeth instead of leaning over the basin. The tight time limit was also to help us to learn not to dawdle but get on and get through our ablutions as we did not have that much time to get dressed.
I don't know why or how it happened but I found myself suggesting to two of the guys to go and have their piss while Mark and I used the basin, and then we would swap over. The others saw the value in this and we tried it out. The pattern worked and the four of us began to meld together into a team from then. The other two were from the two beds opposite mine and Marks, making them numbers nineteen and twenty. This little partnership was to last us throughout our school years and with the support we gave each other, we became firm friends and also leaders in our year group. Such that for our last year, Mark was made head boy, and the other three of us were made prefects. One person who also noticed this was John and he surreptitiously encouraged us along the way with it, that first year. We did not come to a knowledge of this until we were in our second last year, but John had told the house master during our first week to keep an eye on us because he predicted that we would be the leaders of our year throughout our schooling. The master only told us this when he invited us to join him at the end of our fifth year when he was going to offer us the role of being prefects, both for the school and for the hostel the following year.

Back in the dormitory I pulled on a pair of the dreaded skants which I still was not used to and then donned my school uniform and having dressed faster than most of the others I had a short bit of time on my hands to stand by my bed and observe. I noticed that the boy in the bed next to the little boy I had helped was giving him a bit of grief. I knew how I liked bigger guys treating me and it was not what I was seeing. Something made me walk over to the boy. I tapped him on the shoulder to make him turn around, "Van Heerdon, leave the poor guy alone. We all have to live together in this dorm and we should treat each other the way we want to be treated." I told him.
"Look, he is a pansy. Shit he doesn't even have ball hairs yet. He should still be at junior school." Van Heerdon said.
"He may be smaller than you, but I bet he is better than you. I doubt he picks on those who are smaller than him. Leave him alone or you will have more to deal with than just him." I responded. I had not realised it but while I was talking to van Heerdon, Mark and my other two friends to be, Simon and Andrew, had come over and were standing behind me.
"Ja, you will have all of us to deal with." Mark said, giving me a bit of a start as I had not even heard him come up and he was standing close enough that I felt his breath on my neck when he said the first word.
"Come on guys, you can't be serious man! Its little shits like this that are made to be punished. He is going to be my skivvy whether he likes it or not." Van Heerdon argued.
"No it is shits like you who think that way who cause so much pain and suffering in the world. We are warning you. Give our little friend here anymore grief and you are going to wish that you had been selected to be in the other dorm because your life in this dorm is going to be so horrible you will wish that you had gone to a different school." Simon said.
"Now say sorry to Oliver." Andrew added.
I had not remembered Oliver Martyn's name which had made it difficult to refer to him as I could hardly call him a kid when he was the same age as me give or take half a year and so I was grateful when Andrew reminded me. We had only played the game the night before, but to remember twenty new names from just one game was a bit difficult.
"You are kidding, right? I've got nothing to say sorry for." Van Heerdon complained.
"Yes you do. You have been mean and hurt this guy's feelings. Now say sorry or you will be." Andrew warned.
"Well, I'm not sorry and I'm not saying sorry to the little shit. Got it?" van Heerdon resisted.
Mark turned and addressed the rest of the dorm. "Ok guys, you have seen this. Van Heerdon here has been a bully and mean to our friend Martyn here. Who thinks he should be sorted out and who thinks he is right? If you think he should be sorted out, raise your hand now."
van Heerdon was the only person in the dorm who did not raise his hand and that included John who had come in to get us to go for our breakfast.
"Is there anyone who thinks that what he has done is ok?" Mark asked, more to emphasise to van Heerdon that he was on his own in this. Not a single hand was raised, not even van Heerdon's.
"Do you want to change your mind and apologise now?" Mark asked van Heerdon.
van Heerdon knew when he was beaten and so very grudgingly turned and mumbled something that sounded more like a veiled threat than an apology.
"Louder, you were loud enough when you were putting him down. Everybody could hear the mean things you were saying, now make sure everybody hears a proper apology." I ordered.
"Sorry," van Heerdon said just loud enough for others to hear.

With that John called us together and told us what books and things we needed to get out for the day in school and said we needed to take them with us to breakfast as we would not come back to the dorm till after our lunch. While we were getting our stuff out, John did a quick inspection, and advised those that were not up to his standard of their need to make their cupboard more orderly and neater and what they should do to achieve that. True to his word he skipped Mark's cupboard and did not even look at it let alone into it. Not that it would have mattered because Mark was an order person and his locker and cupboard were both the neatest of the dorm and would stay that way throughout his school life. He always knew where everything was and never ran out of anything like shower gel or toothpaste because he made sure he brought enough from home to not only last him, but also to share with his friends.
After breakfast, one of the three house masters said the prayer and we left for assembly. For this the whole school was present and we all filed into the hall in our year groups with the oldest pupils at the back of the hall and us first years right at the front. We remained standing while the teachers and staff filed in, all dressed in their graduation gowns, and took a place on the stage. We then sang a hymn and a prefect read a passage of Scripture. The deputy head said a prayer and then the head master stood at the lectern and gave what can only be described as a speech. Fortunately this was only for the first day of the new school year and after that either the head or the deputy head gave announcements and that was about it.
>From assembly we went to our form bases to be given our timetables and at the end of the first period of the first day we moved on to start our first proper class in the new school.
During the course of the day, Mark managed to get Oliver aside and warned him that van Heerdon would still attempt to bully him when he thought no one was looking and suggested to Oliver that he try and make sure he was always with others and that if van Heerdon did manage to do something to him, that he was to tell either Mark or me and we would sort van Heerdon out.
Oliver thanked us, but said that he could fight his own battles and that he was actually a yellow belt in Judo and he thought he could sort van Heerdon out with that.
"Ok, but he must make the first move and if you are going to fight him, it must only be in self-defence. Never be the antagonist." Mark said. "If you start it, the school will have to take action against you and if you hurt him severely you could end up being expelled or something like that, but I would love to see you put him into a submission hold." And we all smiled at the thought.

As it was the first week of school there were no afternoon activities and our homework study times were planned for after we had showered and had our dinner so for the afternoons of that first week we had a lot of free time.
After our lunch we went to our dorm and most of us flopped down on our beds not too sure of what we would do with all that free time. John came in and called for the four of us, Mark, Simon, Andrew and myself to go with him. He led us to his room and ushered us inside before closing the door.
"I saw what you guys did for Martyn with van Heerdon this morning. I just wanted to say that I thought it was great. You all need to pull together in the dorm to make it work and happy. Sorting out a bully like that straight off was good, but he will look for opportunity to get some sort of revenge in an attempt to save face, so keep an eye on both of them. You might need to intervene again." John told us.
"I'm not sure that will be necessary. Martyn told us today that he holds a yellow belt in Judo and reckons he can sort out van Heerdon himself." I said.
"And I warned him that it must be done in self-defence. He must let van Heerdon make the first move." Mark told John.
"That was good advice. Now how can we be sure to be present when that happens?" John added with a smile to let us know he too would like to see van Heerdon taken down a peg or two. "Does Martyn know that there is a judo club in the school?" John asked.
"He never mentioned it if he does, and I did not know there was one. But we will make sure he knows about it soon enough." I said.
"Ok, now I like the way the four of you have got together in a team. You worked well at the wash and shave this morning and I have a feeling you will become friends and will work well together throughout the school. That will be good for you and for me." I also know now that my skivvies will come from you four. I get to have two of you but I haven't decided who. To help me decide, I want to have each of you alone for a bit today and tomorrow. You will do some of the things that skivvies do and I will judge on that. I will then tell some of the other prefects what I think and will try to get the right prefect to choose whomever I do not choose. I think it is going to be hard for me to make a final choice and so if I know that I am choosing all four of you but sharing you with another couple of prefects it will make it easier for me." John explained.
"You don't have to apologise to us. We know the thing about being skivvies and I have decided that I am going to do my best for whoever I skivvy for and hope that the person appreciates it and is kind to me in return." Simon said.
"I can't be sure as we don't know each other well enough yet, but I think that goes for all of us. It does for me anyway." I affirmed.
Both Mark and Simon agreed with Mark saying it was the only way to start off.
"That is the right attitude to have. I have found that I am a pretty good judge of people and I am sure I am right about the four of you and will make a prediction today that you are all going to be prefects when you get to sixth form if you carry on with this approach to matters." John said. "Now, I am going to make you a special offer. When we are alone together, you can call me John, and I will call you by your first name too. But obviously when we are out and in a group it will have to be by surname. What do you say?"
"I say yes." I answered.
"Ja that will be good." Mark joined me.
"I'm ok with that too." Andrew added.
"Me too." Simon made up the quartet.
"Ok, PP you stay here to start your trial. The others go back to the dorm and keep an eye on Martyn." John dismissed the others.
