Silent_Ninja@comcast.net Special Thanks: Special thanks goes out to Miguel Sanchez and Paul P. for their great work on prooff reading this chapter for me. Thanks guys, I really appreciate your help on making this chapter even better by clearing up my mistakes. From the previous chapter: Then everyone started singing happy birthday when Mrs. Gonzalez brought in the birthday cake with 12 burning candles on it, I didn't have to make a wish because I already had everything I wanted. After we ate a wonderful dinner, cake and ice cream Shawn opened all his other presents, and he told everyone what I got him so far. I spoke up before everyone started to go home and said, "I have one more present for you Shawn, if everyone would please follow me out to the garage I'll give it to you. Once in the garage I opened a storage room and showed him his four-wheeler, his helmet and gloves. After he ran over to it, he turned back to me and jumped into my arms and started crying. He said through his tears, "Oh Daddy, I love you so much, this is the best day of my life." Chapter 4 The weeks following the adoption and Shawn's birthday flew by quickly, and before we knew it, the remodeling on the soup kitchen and the hotels were finished, and we were ready to launch Operation Karate Force. I set up The Kimono Dragon Homeless Foundation and started it off with 20 million dollars to help fund the hotels and the soup kitchen. The foundation will pay the help, apply for grants and arrange adoptions for any of the kids. I contacted Tim Blackman, Judge Roy Chambers, and the police and sheriff departments. We took to the streets to get the word out about the new soup kitchen, the hotels for homeless kids and free karate and self defense classes. The next morning Shawn and I showed up at the Kimono Dragon soup kitchen ready to do our part and I was pleased to see so many volunteers that turned out to help. We started serving breakfast at 7:00 A.M. and we served our last homeless person at 9:00 A.M. With everyone pulling together we were able to serve 310 people a wonderful breakfast of two eggs, their choice of bacon or sausage, hash browns, and homemade biscuits. I also was able to interview several single parents and a few other men and women out of the homeless that came to eat today. I was able to offer them a weekly paycheck, a free place to live, three meals a day, and no living expenses for working at one of the hotels and the soup kitchen on rotating bases. I took their information and went to have a friend of mine at the police department run background checks on everyone I talked with today, and depending on their reports, they could start to work as early as tomorrow. Shawn and I left the police station and headed home for lunch. If all the reports come back good, we will be fully staffed at both hotels. Once at home I told Shawn to go get cleaned up for lunch, and I walked toward the kitchen to see what Mrs. Gonzalez was cooking. When I entered the kitchen Mrs. Gonzalez said, "There are several messages for you Matt, and some of them sound urgent." I answered her by saying, "Thanks, Please keep my lunch warm and I'll eat it when I'm done with my messages." I turned and went into my office shutting the door behind me. My first message was from Tim Blackman. I called him back and said, "Hey Tim, Matt Jones here, what's up?" He answered saying, "Oh Matt, Thanks for calling me back so soon, I have a big problem, and I hope you can help me with it." "I'll help if I can Tim." I answered him. Then he proceeded to fill me in on a 13-year-old young man named Phillip. It seems that Phillip and his family were in a bad car accident and his dad, mom, and little brother were killed, and he has no other living relatives. I told him I would be there in a little while, if he could have the paperwork ready for me to sign. I then called the foundation and Sarah told me we just received two grants totaling 2.5 million dollars. I thanked her and then returned a call from Officer Simmons and he informed me we had a court date on the two that hurt Shawn. I then called Judge Roy, and he told me about a 10-year-old boy named James that was in his office for stealing food and he thought we could help him instead of putting him into a Youth Detention center. I informed him I was coming to pick up a kid at Tim Blackman's office and he said he would have James there at Tim's office to save time. I went and ate my lunch, filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on what was going on, then Shawn and I left for town. Shawn and I arrived at Tim Blackman's office about 20 minutes later, and his secretary told us to go right on in that he was expecting us. We walked into Tim Blackman's office and were shocked at what I saw. There were five boys in Tim's office and he looked up at us and said, "Hey Matt and Shawn, come on in and join the party." He continued and said, "Let me introduce you to everyone. This is Mark Davis age 7, James Black age 10, Josh Stevenson age 11, Phillip Watson age 13, and Nathan Wilson age seventeen, boys this is Matt and his son Shawn." I shook their hands before I sat down to explain the program to them. Before I began Tim filled me in on each one of the boys. I told them all about the hotels, and what was expected of them. I told them they would have three square meals a day, good clothes to wear, their own soft bed to sleep in at night, and they wouldn't ever have to steal or sell their bodies for food again. Then I said, "Now, if any of you have questions, just speak right up and ask away." Phillip looked at me and asked, "What all would we have to do at the hotel?" I answered by saying, "The main thing that is required of you is for you to do your best in school, and make something of yourselves, and you will even have a chance to go to college if you want to go." I filled them in on all the rules: No cussing, no stealing, no drugs or alcohol, or smoking and you must keep your rooms clean. I looked around at all of them and asked, "Well guys, do you think you would like living at the Kimono Dragon Hotel for Boys?" They all nodded their heads in agreement, I finished signing all the paperwork Tim had for me, and he handed me a folder on each of them. We all headed out to the Expedition. Before I walked out of Tim's office he handed me a 750-dollar check on each boy to buy clothes and anything else they might need. I drove the boys to get them a hamburger and fries before I took them to see where they would be living. I finally pulled up in front of The Kimono Dragon Hotel for Boys and parked in a space reserved just for me. We all got out of the Expedition and headed for the door. Once inside I took the boys up to the front desk and said, "These young men need a room and a welcome basket please." Andrew instantly welcomed them to the hotel and took them one at a time into a large room behind the desk. He got them a change of clothes, their room key, and their welcome basket. Then it was off to show them their rooms. Before getting on the elevator, I took a moment to tell the boys how the rooms and floors were set up. I explained that floors two through five were for ages six through eight, and floors six through nine were for ages nine through eleven, and so forth up to the seventeenth floor. I continued and told them that floors eighteen through twenty-one were for the hotel staff, and with that said, we got onto the elevators. We stopped off on the second floor for Mark's room. I knocked at the floor monitor's room and introduced Mark to him. Chris shook Mark's hand and told him if he needed anything, just call, or knock on his door. I told Chris that Mark would be in Room one, then we went to show Mark his room. I showed Mark how to use his key and we entered his room. I showed him both bedrooms, his TV and PS2 system. I showed him his computer and desk for doing his homework. I showed him how the phones work and the panic buttons if he needed something in an emergency. I asked Shawn; would he stay with him and help him get ready to go get him some new clothes? He said he would, and we were off to the sixth floor and James' room. I introduced James to his floor monitor, Tom. I told Tom that James would be in room one. James asked if Josh could be his room-mate because there was just two months between their ages. I agreed and told them both to get a shower and be ready to go in a few minutes. Next it was Phillips turn, we went up to the tenth floor and I introduced him to Greg. I told Greg he would be in number one. Before going up to get Nathan settled into his room, I asked him: "Nathan, when will you be turning eighteen?" He said he would be turning eighteen in about three months. I went ahead and offered him a job with our maintenance department and he jumped at the chance. I also encouraged him to finish high school, and to take advantage of the employee management program that we offer to all of our employees. He was excited about the management program and quickly agreed, and I told him I would take care of getting him signed up for the program. I took him up to the twenty first floor and let him into an apartment with my pass-key. "I'll get you a key when we go back downstairs to the lobby. Now, be ready to go in about fifteen minutes," I told him. I went down to the lobby and turned in Nathan's key and got him his own pass-key that would open every door in the building. I knocked on Jim, the maintenance supervisor's, office door and, when I heard him say "come in", I went into his office. He stood and we shook hands, and I filled him in on Nathan. I told him that Nathan was interested in our management program, and he said he would take care of everything. Once everyone was back downstairs I introduced Nathan to Jim and we were off to buy clothes. On the way to the mall I stopped off at the bank our foundation uses and deposited the checks Tim Blackman had given me for the boys, and then it was off to the mall. Once at the mall, we paired up to make things a little quicker, I took Mark because he was the youngest, I asked Nathan to take James and Josh, and Shawn went with Phillip. We helped them pick out everything from underwear, socks, shorts, blue jeans, t-shirts, and dress shirts and pants. Then Nathan picked out his clothes and uniforms for work, and then I gave each boy 50 dollars to buy anything with in reason they wanted. They bought everything from a large stuffed teddy bear, movies, PS-2 games, cd's, and candy. Then I asked the boys: were they interested in the free Tae Kwon Do classes I was offering two nights a week? Nathan spoke up and asked, "Does that offer extend to employees also?" I answered him, saying: "Yes it does Nathan, are you interested in taking lessons?" He looked at me with the biggest smile on his face and said, "Oh yes Sir! I sure am." Then he went on to explain that he took Tae Kwon Do lessons before his dad and mom kicked him out of the house, and he was already a Red Belt with three months to go before his Black Belt test. Nathan went on and told me the name of his previous school and instructor, and I was very impressed. Then Mark looked up at me with tears in his eyes and asked, "Can I take lessons too, or am I too little?" Then Shawn did something that made me very proud of him. He walked over to Mark, put his arms around him and said, "Little Buddy, if you want to take lessons, I'll help you. I think you will be totally awesome." He gave Shawn a big hug, and we headed for The Kimono Dragon store. When we got to the Kimono Dragon store, we were greeted by Tom, my store manager. I explained to him what we needed and he helped the boys pick out a Gi, Kimono Dragon gym bag, t-shirts, and patches for their gis. When we got back to the hotel, I sent the boys to put their new clothes away and Shawn volunteered to help Mark while I talked to Nathan more about his Tae Kwon Do instructor. Then I asked him a big favor, "Nathan will you help get Mark, James, and Josh ready for tonight? You know what I mean, the basics: How to tie their belts, and how to act in class. He assured me he would have them ready to go, and Shawn and I left to get ready ourselves. When we arrived at home Shawn began to fill Mrs. Gonzalez in on Mark, James, Josh and Nathan over dinner. Once dinner was over Shawn cleared the table, gave Mrs. Gonzalez a big hug, and went to get ready. I went upstairs, took a shower, and while I was getting my black gi on, I placed a phone call to Nathan's former instructor Ted. I asked him about Nathan, and he had only good things to say about him. I told him about the program and what we were doing in the park tonight, and he decided to join us. We hung up and, by that time, Shawn and I were both ready to go. We arrived at the hotel about 20 minutes later and, sure enough, Nathan had the boys all ready. Shawn let Nathan sit up front with me, and he got into the seat behind us with Mark, while James and Josh got into the seat behind them. I commented on how great they looked and Mark said, "Nathan helped me tie my belt." I smiled at him through the rear view mirror and said, "You'll get used to how it is tied and will be able to tie it yourself soon enough." We got to the park about 40 minutes early, and some of my guys were already there setting up the mats. Nathan, Phillip, Shawn, James and Josh went to help, while Mark stuck to me like superglue. I looked at my watch and it was 6:48 and there was already a good crowd gathering around to watch what was going on. At five minutes till seven I stepped forward and began to speak, "May I have your attention please?" Once everyone was quiet, I continued, "On behalf of the Kimono Dragon Dojo, I want to personally welcome each and every one of you, especially Mayor Williams, Sinsay Ted Johnson from the Flying Falcon Dojo and all the volunteers from my own dojo." Before I continued, I looked over at Nathan and he was grinning from ear to ear. "Now if you are here to start taking lessons, please come over here to the table and sign up, there is no cost for the lessons, I just want to have names so I can get to know everyone." I continued talking and said, "Now I'm going to ask Sinsay Ted to join me on the mats for a friendly demonstration, while we get everyone signed up." We walked out onto the mats, bowed to each other, and began a friendly sparring match. We sparred until everyone was signed up. Then we bowed to each other again, and I called Nathan over and announced that he would be breaking a board, while I held it in front of myself. Billy, one of my Blue Belts brought me a board, and I held it in front of myself while Nathan prepared himself, and kicked. The board broke, and the crowd applauded. Then I shouted, "Line up." I called Billy Mitchell up to lead them through their warm up exercises and, not too long after they started their exercises, a man from the crowd grabbed Mark and put a knife to his throat. Only a few saw what was going on, Sinsay Ted, Shawn, Nathan, and myself. Ted stopped me as I started to move toward the man and Mark, and he nodded toward Nathan who was closer to the man, and behind him. Shawn stepped out of rank, faced the man and said, "Hey scum bag, let my buddy go." The man's attention was now fully on Shawn, and that allowed Nathan to quickly make his move. Nathan stepped up and gave the man a round house kick to his face, before the man knew he was there. When the man fell, Shawn ran up, grabbed Mark, and got him out of the way. Mayor Williams was on his cell phone calling 911 for the police and paramedics and not long after he called, we could hear the sirens coming. Ted and I ran over to make sure the man didn't move until the police got there. I picked Mark up and asked him, "Are you okay little guy?" He answered through his tears, "I'm ok, I knew Shawn and Nathan would save me, because I saw them both coming to help me." The police and paramedics pulled up about then, ran over to us, and asked what happened. They made sure Shawn was not hurt. Then they picked up the man, handcuffed him, and took him to jail. While the police were handcuffing the man, the media arrived, and began asking what happened. Mayor Williams filled them in on what happened, making a big deal over Shawn and Nathan saving Mark. The newspaper took lots of pictures and notes, and told us the story would be on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow morning. I asked the reporters to wait a few minutes because I had something special to do. I called Sinsay Ted over to me and told him what I wanted to do, and he totally agreed. I then called Billy over and whispered in his ear and he ran off to my Expedition to bring me a orange belt and a black belt. I walked up to the front and began to speak, "May I have everyone's attention again, would Shawn Jones and Nathan Wilson please come up front." Billy came back from the Expedition and handed me the belts, and I started speaking, "Shawn and Nathan, because of your bravery, quick thinking, and swift action in the face of danger, it is with great pleasure I award you Shawn your Orange Belt, and Nathan I award you your Black Belt, congratulations to you both." Everyone started cheering, and Mark came up and hugged them both. I thanked everyone for coming, and promised them we would be back Friday night for another lesson. Then I loaded the boys back into the Expedition and headed back to the hotel. Once we got back to the hotel Shawn asked me privately, "Daddy can Mark spend the night with me? I'm worried about him, because of what happened." I told him he could but he would be his responsibility because I had to work in the morning. He agreed, and ran off to ask Mark if he wanted to spend the night with us. I went up and told Chris that Mark would be with me and Shawn for the night and then I knocked on Mark's door. They opened the door and I went in to help them get Mark some clothes and stuff for the night. I turned off the lights, and ushered the boys out the door. We got into the Expedition and headed for home, and once we got home I told Mark about Tank and Daisy. I pulled the Expedition into the garage, and we went into the house. Tank and Daisy came up to greet us as soon as we came in, and Mark was a little intimidated by their size, until Tank came over and gave him a big kiss. Shawn took Mark upstairs and showed him a bedroom he could sleep in, but Mark asked Shawn if he could sleep with him and Shawn said he could. I went up and told the boys that they had all day to play tomorrow and they needed to get their showers and get into bed. I gave them plenty of time for their showers, before going in to tuck them in and kiss them good night. I gave Mark a hug, kissed him on his forehead and tucked him in. I did the same to Shawn before going to bed myself. My alarm went off way to early and the first thing I noticed was that Shawn wasn't in the bed with me. Then I remembered that Mark spent the night with him so I got up, took care of business in the bathroom and went down for my first cup of coffee. I filled Mrs. Gonzalez in on what happened, and that Mark had spent the night with Shawn. She said that wouldn't be a problem, and sent me to get the boys up for breakfast. I let Tank and Daisy out for their morning duties and then I went to wake the boys up. I stood in Shawn's doorway just looking at the boys, they were laying there with their arms around each other. I ran into my room, grabbed my digital camera, and took several pictures of them. Then I woke the boys up by saying, "Good morning boys, rise and shine, breakfast will be ready in 15 minutes." Shawn said through a yawn, "Good morning daddy, I love you." Mark spoke next saying, "Good morning Mr. Jones, something sure smells good." They got up and I went to get ready also. When we all were ready, we met in the hallway and went down for breakfast together. Shawn introduced Mark to Mrs. Gonzalez. Then we all sat down to a delicious breakfast of French toast, scrambled eggs, sausage links, juice and milk. After breakfast Shawn cleared the table, gave Mrs. Gonzalez a big hug and thanked her for a great breakfast. I gave both boys a hug, told them to have fun, and left for work. Shawn and Mark swam, played video games and played with the dogs. Shawn took Mark for a ride on his four-wheeler and then he took him horse-back riding. After they got back to the house Mark hugged Shawn and said, "I love you Shawn, I wish you were my brother." I arrived at my office building after fighting the morning traffic, and before going upstairs I grabbed a newspaper out of the paper box in front of my building. I rode the elevator up to my floor, and walked into my office. My secretary said good morning as soon as I came through the door. I told her good morning as well. I got my messages from her, and headed into my office, but before I got there she said, "That is a great story about Shawn and Nathan in the paper, tell Shawn I'm proud of him." I told her I would and went into my office, and shut my door. I sat down and read the article for myself, and it actually was a great article. It highlighted Operation Karate Force and what we were trying to do for the community. The article was called: Tae Kwon Do Heroes, and it talked about Nathan's and Shawn's quick thinking, their bravery, and their swift action to save one of their friends, and it went on to tell about their rank promotions, and it ended the article up by talking about the foundation, and how to donate or contribute to this worthy cause. When I finished reading the article my phone buzzed, I picked it up and said, "Hello, Matt Jones here." It turned out to be Sarah at the foundation, telling me the phones have been ringing off the hook, with people wanting to donate to the foundation because of the article. I finished up with my last child about 12:30 P.M. and left for the day. I got home and instantly had two giggling boys hugging me, and saying they missed me. I hugged them back, and they began to tell me all about their day. I looked at my watch and saw it was about 2:00 P.M., and I sent the boys off to get cleaned up and to get ready for dinner. During dinner I read the article to Mrs. Gonzalez, Shawn, and Mark. Mark got up out of his chair, went over to Shawn, and gave him another big hug. After we ate, I sent the boys to get ready for karate class. Once everyone was ready we left for the hotel to get the other boys. The boys were ready when we got there, they got into the Expedition and we were off to the Kimono Dragon Fitness Center. When we arrived the boys ran inside to help set up the mats. I started class off by reading the article to the entire class, and then I shouted, "Line Up!" We exercised for about 35 minutes, and then I broke the class up into smaller groups according to the color of their belts. I made my rounds to each group, helping, and making suggestions where needed. About twenty minutes before class was over, I called them to attention, and began to tell them all about a karate tournament coming up in three months, that I signed them up for. It is a tournament for all ages and all ranks. I personally think we have the best dojo in the state of Pennsylvania. I think we have the ability to go to this tournament and win it with no problem because you all are winners in my book already. I know, without a shadow of a doubt, you'll make me proud. No matter what, win or lose, I just want you to do your best, and that is what makes you all winners in my book.
