Jack and I were sitting close together in the back, and I'd explained everything to Rivers. I started to tell Jack about who I was, and what we were heading for when Rivers's zipper went. He passed it back to me. "You take it, Dab." I saw that it was from Dan. "Come back quick. Sorry." Fuck, I thought, Jock must have got wind of what had happened. I told Rivers we had to turn round and get back as fast as we could. "What's up, Dab? This is all very mysterious." "No idea, but I'll zip and try to find out." Rivers turned and we headed back. "He called you Dab," whispered Jack. "Yes, I know. People who fuck me get to call me that - it's my name, after all." "He fucks you?" "Yeah. But keep quiet about it - not everyone knows. Now shut up while I find out what the hell's going on." "Will you turn me in?" he quavered, his lower lip in danger of letting him down. "No. I promise. Now let me do what I have to do." I zipped Dan. "Explain." "Can't. We're not in trouble." "Does Jock know?" "God no. Good news for you both." I told Jack that nothing was wrong, and that our plan that he should come and work with Jorrocks wasn't about to change. Another zip came through when we were only about 10 miles away. "Come to road where jillies van was and wait." I told Rivers where to go. "I've no idea what's going on, but that's where we have to be." Rivers grumbled quietly to himself, but luckily he knew how to get to where Dan had told us to go. Several minutes later we were driving slowly along the quiet road which formed the school boundary. "There," I said, "there's Dan. Pull up beside him." When we got there Golding had a third black boy with him - older than the Pups. "It's Dodo!" cried Jack, "he's OK." I told Jack to stay put, and got out to the strange assembly in front of me. "You're Dodo," I said. He nodded. "You got our Jack?" "Yes, but he's not a prisoner. Get in, the three of you, and we can talk out of sight." I didn't want any jillies, or school Authority, to see us. They got in - five of us fitting comfortably into the back seat. It was, after all, amply big enough for strenuous lay-by activities. "Drive away until we're somewhere quiet," I told Rivers, "but not too far." His dry "very good, my lord," amused Dan and Golding. The other two were far too pleased to be reunited for them to notice. When they'd stopped and Rivers had parked in the middle of nowhere I explained who I was and the offer I'd made to Jack. "Dodo, if you want to stay with Jack and come and work for me there's a job waiting for you. I've no idea what it would be - that's up to you - but there's safety and you two would be together. If you want to go off somewhere else together, that's fine too. Talk about it and we'll wait here while you do. Come on you two," I said to the Pups, "let's give them a few minutes in private." Rivers slid the glass panel shut (a position in which I had never seen it before). Dan and Golding followed me out and we walked 100 yards away. "What happened?" I asked Dan. "As soon as you'd gone with Jack it occurred to me that any half-decent big brother would come and find him when it got light and the fuss had died down. So I collared Golding and we went back to the woods." "Why you, Golding?" "If he saw a black face he might not run off," said Golding simply. Good thinking, Dan, I thought. "And you found him." "Yeah. We saw him before he saw us, so I had to think quickly. I called out 'Dodo, Jack's here', and he came running over. 'Where? Is he OK?' When he saw us - two black boys like him and Jack, he seemed to relax a bit. 'Where is he?' he asked again. I tried to explain, but I don't think he believed me at first. It took a good 15 minutes before he accepted that we were on his side and that Jack was safe. That's when I zipped you." I was so proud of my Pup. I hugged him. "Well done, Dan," I whispered into his ear. We parted: his eyes were sparkling and his grin wider than ever. "Can I have a reward, Dab?" I raised my eyebrows - I had no problem with his calling me Dab in front of Golding, but I wondered what the sparkling eyes might betoken. "OK," I said warily, "what are you after?" "Can I fuck Dodo as well if they stay together?" Golding's eyes were out on stalks. "Keep quiet about what you're hearing, Golding," I said, knowing that I would have to tell Nigger anyway, "these are secrets for our little group only. Consider me an honorary black boy for the day." Dan giggled - a sound I hadn't heard him make before. "I think they've had long enough," I said and we returned to the car. I opened the door. "Decided yet, Jack?" Dodo, as befitted the elder brother and sometime protector (not that he'd done a great job several hours earlier), adopted the role of spokesman. "Jack thinks you're honest, and he wants to trust you. Why is a posh white boy like you hanging with black kids? Are they posh too?" I had about three seconds to decide how to persuade him. "When we found Jack last night he was in a terrible state. One of the jillies you were mixed up with fired a shotgun and got one of our boys in the leg. Jack was caught when you all ran off. I saw that he was just a kid and couldn't possibly have fired the shotgun, so I told the boy who was sitting on him to bugger off, and I would deal with it. Jack was scared, but Dan here and I smuggled him into the school and cleaned him up. He was cold and scared, so we made him comfortable in our bed. Yes, Dodo, our bed. Dan and I fuck each other and when Jack saw the size of Dan's whopper while we were showering with him there was no stopping him. He told us you and your mates fucked him, and I must say you've trained him well. The three of us didn't finish until 4 this morning." Golding's eyes were now even more on stalks. "Jack told us he'd enjoyed it. Is that true, Jack?" "It's true, Dodo. All the stuff he said about rescuing me, and all the stuff we did in bed. Dodo, they're friends, honest. Dab has offered me a job, and if you come with me we can still be together. Oh please, Dodo." Dodo was clearly moved by his brother's plea, but he was still cautious. He turned to Rivers - the only adult present. "Mister, all my life I've been taught not to trust white guys, but I've nowhere else to turn. Is what he's saying true? Will he give us jobs and keep us safe? I don't mind if he wants to fuck us if that's the price of making Jack safe." Rivers did his best not to smile. "Yes, it's true. All of it. The two of you can be there in two hours. Is there anyone -" but I interrupted him. "No, they're on their own. Well, Dodo? Jack? What's it to be?" They exchanged a look, then a nod. "Yes," said Dodo. "Yes, please, you mean," said Jack. They got back into the car and I was about to join them. "Thanks, you two. You know you have to keep your mouths shut. Dan, I'll be back tomorrow afternoon. Golding, I'll see Aitken tomorrow and let him know what's happened, but until then, you two - not a word." They both nodded. Dan said, "when do I get my reward, Dab?" That was a facer. He could hardly enjoy it there and then in the back of the Rolls. "Let's talk about that tomorrow. I haven't forgotten about Ibrahim either. We have a lot of arranging to do." Dan's eyes twinkled again. ***** By the time we got home Dodo and Jack were in the picture about who I was, and what work on the Estate might mean. They asked lots of questions, particularly Dodo, who was still not completely convinced about me. "Why are you doing this ... Dab? What's Dab anyway - it's not a real name?" "Nor is Dodo," I pointed out, but 'do' is the first two letters of your name and 'dab' is the first three letters of mine." Rather to my surprise neither of them wanted to know the rest of it. I told Dodo I was taking them home because when we found Jack he was so vulnerable and lonely. "Besides, he thought you'd abandoned him, so he needed to find somewhere safe, where jillies or anyone else couldn't get him. We were half way when Dan got us to come back for you." The explanation seemed enough as it was, but I thought a clincher might help. "Besides he's bloody good in bed, Dodo, and if you taught him then you're probably bloody good in bed too. I plan to find out." Jack giggled. "He's pretty good too, Dodo, and so's his boyfriend Dan." "Dan is not my boyfriend," I said quickly, "he's special, but not that special." That shut them up for a mile or two. I zipped Dunstable and Mrs Tallis, asking them to meet the Rolls when we arrived. They were there when Rivers drew up. The three of us got out and I asked Mrs Tallis to take Dodo and Jack to the kitchen and feed them. "I don't know when they last ate, but I'm sure Mrs Morley can rustle something up." When they'd disappeared I took Dunstable into the Office and briefly told him what had happened. "They're orphans. Their parents were killed in a riot in London two years ago, as were their sisters and a baby brother. Those two have suffered. I want them to stay here as Estate staff. They worked as casual fruit pickers last year, but I've no idea what they might do here. The younger one, Jack, will go to Jorrocks - there's always work for a boy his age ferreting around, I'm sure. I don't know about Dodo. He's 16 and looks strong. There's no hurry - they've had a hellish couple of years and the important thing is to give them security and a feeling of home. I'll put them in the room Billy used to have above Jorrocks. They can be together there if they need somewhere of their own. Think about what we might get Dodo to do, would you?" Dunstable said nothing, but looked at me shrewdly. "Your kindness is nothing new to me, but ... is this wise? Are you sure there's no family - no-one who will worry about them?" "Dead sure. And if I - we - don't worry about them they'll be on their own again, at the mercy of jillies. They pick on black people - did you know?" He nodded, "yes, I'm afraid that's true, but there will be none of that here, I can promise you that." "They've been on the run since their family was wiped out, so they won't be on any records for land-service or anything. Is that going to be a problem?" "If it is it's my job to sort it out. I don't see a difficulty - after all, they're crying out for farm workers." There was no more to be said. "I'll collect them from the kitchen shortly and wheel them off to Jorrocks." Before venturing to the kitchen I went in search of Billy. I found him up a ladder with Byrd passing him things. He saw me and smiled. "When you're done in here, Byrd, will you lend me Billy for ten minutes? I'll be in the kitchen." "We'll be done here in a jiffy, Sir," said Byrd, and I was glad to see Billy nod. Mrs Morley had done a fine job if the number and emptiness of the plates in front of Dodo and Jack were evidence. "These poor boys haven't eaten for weeks," she cried, delighted to have two trencherman to feed. "I can well believe it," I said. Jack nudged his brother. "Thank you, Missis, that was something else," Dodo muttered. "I'm Mrs Morley, not 'missis', boys, but it was a pleasure to see two lads enjoying their food. Have you room for any more?" Two well-filled boys shook their heads. At that moment Billy came in and stopped dead when he saw two black faces looking at him. "Oh ..." was all he said. Damn, I thought, Billy's a country boy and he's probably never seen a black face before. If his family had the same dislike of blacks that so may people had, he'd probably been brought up to distrust them. Time to be cheerful, Dab. "Come in Billy. These are two brothers, Dodo and Jack. They were involved in some jilly trouble at school and they're coming to work here. You two, this is Billy. He works here too. Now come with me, all of you." As they were leaving I thanked Mrs Morley. "You've found two fans there, I think," I said, "they'll only ever have a good word for you." She smiled happily. "I hope Billy isn't going to be silly," she said - she'd seen his instant reaction. "I'm sure it'll be OK," I said, and went to make sure it was. The three of them were waiting for me, none of them speaking. It would take three minutes to reach Jorrocks's lair, and I had to find a way of taking ten, or even twenty. I decided to show the new staff the extent of the grounds. "Look," I said, "I'm going to be completely honest with you - with all three of you. Billy, these two are brothers, orphans with nobody in the world who gives a fuck about them apart from each other. Think how awful that must be. It's not up to me to tell you their story, but I hope they will when they learn to trust you. You've heard all sorts of shit about black people, but trust me - it's nonsense. They're as distrustful of white faces as you are of black ones, but here, in this place all four of us call home, I want you to be kind to each other. Dodo, Jack, you asked me in the car if Dan was my boyfriend and I told you he wasn't - he's a boy at school, that's all. Billy knows about him and knows that what Dan and I get up to at school is fun. Billy knows, because Billy is my boyfriend." I took his hand and turned to kiss him. Billy was reluctant at first, but I insisted. "Come on, Billy, nothing's changed. I still love you. If you still love me you'll be kind to Dodo and Jack, because they're my friends, and if I've rescued them you've got to look out for them when I'm not here." "When you're busy fucking Dan, you mean," but the grin showed that he was coming round. His lips opened and I knew the awkward moment was over. Dodo and Jack were taken aback by this overt demonstration of love. "You love each other?" said Dodo, "two boys?" "Yes," Billy and I both said. Dodo and Jack looked at each other and shrugged. "OK," said Dodo, "so many weird things have happened in the last two days that two dudes in love doesn't seem so odd any more." "There's more," I said. "You heard Dan call me Dab. That's my name, and you call me that if we're on our own - or if it's just us four. In front of anyone else you call me Sir." Billy butted in. "It's really odd, but you get used to it. Dab and I fuck each other all night - well, most of it anyway - then I have to call him Sir when I see him after breakfast." Dodo shook his head. "I don't get it." "Don't be daft, Dodo," said Jack, "it's just a new set of rules. If we're safe and gettin' meals like that and he fucks us all night - oh!" Time for quick action. "Billy, Dan and I fucked Jack last night while Dodo was still looking for him. These two have been fuck brothers for ages. They're like us. I haven't fucked Dodo yet, nor has he fucked me, but I plan to put that right soon. I want you to join in." Billy didn't look too happy: he didn't want to share. "Look, Billy, you know Rivers and I fuck. No-one else here does, with me or with him as far as I know. I like these two; I love you - that makes you special, Billy." We walked on in silence for a few yards. Then Jack took Billy's hand. "Billy," he said softly, "please do what he asks. He's been so kind to us, and if you love him then you'll want to be kind too, won't you?" A boy not yet 13 had found the key to unlock Billy's good nature- to sweep away the idiotic prejudice the lad had had fed into him all his life. Billy squeezed Jack's hand. "Course I will, Jack." He turned to me. "Where are they going to sleep, Dab? In my old room?" I nodded. "They need to be together, and I'm sure sure you can work out visiting times. Tonight it's different though." Three pairs of eyes fixed on me. "Wait and see." Jorrocks watched as a strange party drew close. "Well now, what's this." "Help in the orchard and wherever it's needed," I said. "These two brothers are coming to work here. I suggested that Jack should help you, but you might want both of them. They've done fruit picking. Can you talk to them about what they might do, and if you can't use either of them come and tell Dunstable - he knows about them. They've had a rough time, and I want them to be happy here." Jorrocks smiled. "Always happy working with plants, Master Dab, always happy to show youngsters how they can be happy too." I let the 'Master Dab' pass - he was getting forgetful - and besides, who was going to worry? "Before you do, though, I want to show them where they'll live," and I pointed Billy upstairs. "Show them, Billy." While the three of them were out of the way I gave Jorrocks a brief idea of who the two boys were, and why I cared. "You're a big-hearted man, Master Dab ... your lordship, sorry ... and we're all proud of you, begging your pardon. I'll see these lads are all right." I put my hand on his arm. "I know you will, Jorrocks, and I'm very grateful." A herd of elephants came down the stairs, a herd of elephants seemingly a more cohesive herd than the one which had gone up a few minutes earlier. Something had happened up there, but I couldn't work out what. Whatever it was was good however. Dodo told me that he and Jack had never had anywhere as nice. "Thank you, Sir," he said. Billy grinned. "Can I leave them with you, Jorrocks? They'll eat with the indoor staff of course - can you tell them where to go and when?" Billy and I went back to the house. "What happened up there, Billy? Whatever it was seems to have made a difference." "I told them that I loved you; that you were the only person in my life who mattered; and that if they were your friends they were my friends. Then Jack thanked me and there were tears in his eyes. Dodo said 'you ought to see these if you and Dab are going to fuck us' and right there, without any warning, they took their trousers down. Have you seen Dodo's?" I shook my head, and Billy smiled. "You have a treat in store then." It was my turn to smile. "A foursome in our bed tonight then." We agreed that he would find a way to let Dodo and Jack know about the plan. "Bring them along just after 10." ***** I'd had a long day and not a lot of sleep the night before, so I didn't have to feign weariness as 10 o'clock approached. Dunstable, Mrs Tallis and I had dined together again and spent the meal and the hour afterwards making sure that Dodo and Jack would settle in. They assured me that if there was any hint of racial intolerance it would be dealt with swiftly. "I think they've survived in the last couple of years by their wits," I told them, "and that's likely to have involved thieving for food. If they do anything like that please deal with it, but do so kindly. They're good kids at heart, I'm sure." They both smiled. "They're not the only ones," murmured Mrs Tallis. By 10 I was in bed ready for whatever was coming - showered and expectant. Billy didn't knock, but came in quietly, followed by the other two. He closed the door behind him. "Come on, clothes off," he said quietly, "this is where the fun starts," and he set an example by stripping in 30 seconds flat. Jack stripped equally fast, but Dodo was more hesitant. I got out of bed - naked naturally - and went over to him. "Let me help, Dodo." I undid his trousers and felt inside. "Good, isn't it?" murmured an erect Jack. It was indeed good, and not only good but hardening quickly in my hand. Dan, when he received his reward, would find himself matched, if not slightly beaten, but Dan, I knew, would have no regrets were he to be second in that particular ranking. Dodo grinned. "'Good' doesn't do it justice, li'l bro, and well you know it. Want to see it proper, Dab?" We seemed to have reached the ideal state of informality rather more quickly than I'd anticipated. "You bet, Dodo, let it out and amaze us all." =============================================================================== The fun continues in Chapter 17 as staff relations are established. In order that the plot advanced there was regrettably little sex in the last couple of chapters. That will be put right very soon. The story is, of course, fiction.
