Chapter 40 - My Son and His Friends The next few weeks passed quickly as I was focused on reviewing material for the state-wide assessments, while the boys studied nightly for their upcoming tests, and Phil made several trips to Tampa to be with his father and family. It was a rather hectic time, but we made the best of it. We are approaching the first of May, and the beginning of the "testing season." As is now the norm in today's schools, we were trained and threatened within an inch of our lives along with the revocation of our certificates and criminal charges if we altered the prescribed testing procedures for the state-wide assessments. I marked my testing manuals with the required dialogue with the students and prepared myself for days of boring testing with no healthy student interaction. The boys were nervous, but I felt that they were prepared. I just needed for them, and my students to go into the testing with the knowledge that they had been taught the material and had proved that they knew the material. I really needed for them to put the political ramifications behind them and settle down, read the questions, think of what was being asked of them, and then, mark their answers. We tested each morning for six days beginning on Tuesdays through Thursdays for two weeks. We ran an abbreviated schedule after testing so that we could see all of our students during the week as we would soon be giving finals in each of the subject areas. This made for long, boring, and stressful days. It was a good thing that we had the run-walk race practice sessions after school as it allowed the instructional staff, as well as, the students an opportunity to blow off steam and burn off stress before going home, or to their after school jobs. As soon as practice was over, I headed home as I had things to do for the next day, and I had to prepare dinner and do household chores. When Phil was in Tampa, I waited patiently for his phone call. Phil called each night around eight o'clock, and we talked for approximately thirty minutes. He was in Tampa during the first week of testing, and he could feel my stress. I tried to hide it from him, but I was not successful. He tried his best to comfort me and lower my stress levels. I, on the other hand, tried to listen to the information he gave me regarding his Dad and provide some support for his emotional well-being. Phil drove home on Friday, and we had a great weekend. We went to several outdoor activities around the county and enjoyed various festivals and get-togethers. Ryan suggested and Phil agreed that we should have a special dinner on Saturday night and I should cook something unique and different. Ryan left the house and went to Rob's house for their normal-spend the night routine. Since Ryan was out of the house Phil and I had some quality private time which also involved running errands, or doing chores at one of the two houses. It was on that Friday night when we had the house to ourselves that Phil told me that the doctors had talked to the family in private and said that he (the doctor) did not expect his Dad to last through the end of the month. He said that he was going to go down again on the following Sunday and would stay there until the end of his Dad's life. He said that he definitely needed to spend the next week working on projects and making decisions so he would be able to make decisions from Tampa. This meant that he would be at the house during the last week of testing. I hugged him, and we cried as we thought and talked about that home-going experience. Phil looked at me and asked if I would drive down with him on the Sunday following the last week of testing and stay through Wednesday night. I thought about it and agreed with the understanding that I had to be home for the run-walk race which was scheduled for the upcoming Saturday. He looked at me and said "Speaking of the run-walk race, what is the latest with the posse?" I said "They seem to have dropped their demands to see me naked, but I feel that they are up to something." He said "Well what are you going to do if they accept your stipulation?" I said "I plan to pick the weakest one of the group and go through with the challenge. I would not normally do this, but they had picked me and well, I think it is only fair that I get to pick one of them. If they should win, then I will strip for only one of them, if I should win then, I will have a decision to make." "Would you make them go through stripping for you?" he asked. I said "I am not sure right now; I have very mixed emotions because it could come back and haunt me with a professional practices charge should that information ever became public. I will just have to see how they handle themselves." Phil said "Doug, I am shocked and surprised at your answer." I said "I know, I am too, but I want them to worry, so I have not made up my mind, and I don't want them to read that decision on my face or hear it in my voice." Phil said "You are wicked." I smiled and nodded my head in agreement. We went to bed that night and just feel asleep with me spooning Phil. We woke up the next morning, and Phil made love to me. I thoroughly enjoyed his technique and ability to satisfy me and make me feel loved. We showered, dressed, and headed out to review some of his work projects so that I could begin to get a handle on what I might be able to do to help him during the summer should he need me and he could get a fresh handle on what needed to be done and by whom. I was impressed with the size of many of his projects and how involved and different the planning and details were with regard to each one. I was beginning to have second thoughts as to whether I could take on this responsibility, but Phil assured me that he thought that I could and that he would be available either in person or over a phone call. We finished our morning tour and headed to the grocery store to make the weekly purchases which for some reason turned into two shopping carts of food. After making a down payment on the grocery store, we went home and put everything away. I planned the special evening's meal as I was walking through the grocery store and decided upon a roast in the crock-pot. I took the roast out of the refrigerator and seasoned it with garlic salt, and coarse grained black pepper. I pulled the cast iron skillet, added a little cooking oil, and allowed it to heat on the cook-top. As the oil was heating up, I coated the seasoned roast with some flour. I put the roast in the heated oil and browned it on all sides. I then placed it in the crock-pot with a couple of sliced onions; some water and a packet of onion soup/dip mix. I put the lid on the crock-pot and turned it to low. I cut up several potatoes, placed them in a boiler of water, put them on the cook-top; opened several cans of vegetables, placed them in several pots, seasoned them, covered them with lids, and sat them on the cook-top. I sliced some fresh peaches and began to make a peach cobbler. I placed it in the oven and allowed it to cook. I wrapped the rolls in aluminum foil and placed them on the counter. I started the pots on the cook-top around four o'clock after checking on the progress of the roast. I had things timed perfectly and dinner was ready for the four of us at five o'clock. Since this was somewhat of a special dinner, I placed the plates, cutlery, and dishes on the table in the formal dining room along with placemats, cloth napkins, and lighted candles. I called everyone to the table, and their faces showed ultra shock as we only use the formal dining room for major dinners and holiday celebrations. Phil and I sat at the opposite ends of the table while Ryan and Myles sat on the sides opposite each other. I turned the lights down and we ate by candlelight. Ryan stated that he wanted to do this more often as it made the good food even better. I had to chuckle. We finished the dinner and then, I brought out small dishes of peach cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream. We finished our desserts, pushed back and had about an hour of just good conversation, jokes and laughter. I had to agree that this was truly a special night, and we probably needed to have more nights like this. Ryan and Myles pushed us to the family room while they took responsibility for clearing the dining room table, returning the dining room to its official order, cleaning the kitchen, and loading the dishwasher. As Phil and I were sitting in the family room watching HGTV, Ryan's phone began to ring. He asked Myles to see who was calling, and Myles announced that it was Gina. Ryan grabbed the phone and headed down to his room. Myles finished the clean-up in the kitchen and headed to Ryan's room. I looked at Phil and said "This is the day that I have always feared and dreaded. This is the day that I begin to lose him to girls." Phil chuckled and I poked him in the ribs. We sat and finished the movie then; we went to our bedroom, got in bed and talked. I fell asleep with Phil holding me and nuzzling my neck. As I woke up the next morning, I found Phil already awake and sitting in the family room. I looked at him and he said "Just had to get on up, I slept some, but it was a restless night so I didn't want to spoil your sleeping, so I got up and came out here." I sat down with him and we talked some more as his Dad was on his mind. He felt that he had let his Dad down by moving to this area rather than staying close to home. I asked him about his grandparents, and he said that they lived in North Carolina. I used that tidbit of information to let him know that all families go through separations due to jobs, and other family member issues. I talked with him and worked him through a major part of his guilt. I asked him about breakfast, and he said "Pancakes and syrup would do just fine." I got up and walked down to Ryan's room. I heard him and Myles talking, giggling, and probably playing around. I just knocked on the door and said "Guys, pancakes in about ten minutes." They said they would be there, so I left and returned to the kitchen and began to prepare the pancake mix. I pulled the syrup out and put it on the counter then; I pulled the plates and set them there as well. I added a little cooking oil to the electric skillet and began to cook small pancakes. Phil got the first stack and then, Ryan and Myles showed up for the second and third stacks. I cooked several more stacks for them and then, I finally cooked a stack for me. We enjoyed breakfast and clean-up was quick and easy. Ryan and Myles left for Jay's after breakfast while Phil and I lounged around the house. Phil wanted to talk about our upcoming trip to Tampa. He strongly suggested that I could stay at his parents' house in his old bedroom, but I cancelled those plans. I opted for us to stay closer to the hospital so that we could come and go easily and we would be close in case he needed to be there quick. He finally agreed, because I just did not feel comfortable going in his parents' house having never met them and especially if we were to share a bed in a conservative's house. I told him that I would work on reservations later in the day. We, then set up our travel itinerary for our departure a week from today with a scheduled break in Lake City, Florida and then, continuing on to Tampa. It was decided that I would follow him down I-75 and through Tampa to our hotel. After we checked in, we would go to the hospital and check in with his Dad and other family members. I called and made reservations at the Embassy Suites for two from Sunday night through Wednesday night. Phil said that after that, he would either spend the night with his Mom or at his brother's house. I did not argue with him on that as I felt family should begin to stick together as time with his Dad was short. After I had finished with the reservations, Phil wanted me to sit with him in the family room. He said that we would go to lunch mid-afternoon so that I would not have to cook lunch and supper. I bought into that very quickly. I grabbed some paper and began to plan my packing list so that I would have everything I needed to make the trip next Sunday. I called and talked to Meredith. She was more than happy to keep Ryan for me so that I could go with Phil. She said to give Phil her love and let him know that she and her family would be thinking and praying for him. I passed her message along to him and it really touched him, as he could not talk for a few minutes because he was so emotional. I finished my packing list, and just relaxed with Phil. We really didn't talk or do anything physical; we just lay there and held one another for a long time. Finally, Phil said "Doug, go call Ryan and Myles and let's go eat." I called Ryan and he said that Myles would be going home to his mom, so that it would be just the three of us eating out. He said that he would be home in about fifteen minutes. I used that time to freshen up, change shirts, and put on my shoes. Ryan came home within the time span that he said he would. He changed shirts and was soon standing in the kitchen with us ready to go eat. We walked out the front door and got into Phil's truck. We both told Doug that the driver made the decision regarding the restaurant. He smiled and said "No problem!" I was suddenly worried as he agreed to that, too fast. He made a few turns and soon we were at the Mongolian Restaurant. I was immediately relieved as this was one of mine and Ryan's favorites. We got out and walked into the restaurant. We were seated and our drink orders were taken. We were then directed to the plates. We got up and began to make our choices of vegetables, meats and sauces for our dinner. We finished making our selections and presented them to the cook. He poured them on the grill and began to cook them while we returned to our table. In a few minutes, our food was brought to each of us along with a large container of rice. We mixed some of our prepared food with the rice and began to have a very enjoyable dinner. We finished our meal, paid our bill, and headed home. I asked Phil and Ryan to join me in the family room. Ryan looked at me with questions in his eyes. I said "Ryan, Phil has asked me to go with him to Tampa next Sunday and I have agreed to do that. I have talked to Meredith and you will be staying with them until I return." Ryan said "I understand Dad, and I wish that I could go, but I understand that you need to go. When will you return?" I said "My plans are to return on Thursday as I have to participate in the run-walk race on Saturday and I really need to be back and help my students prepare for their finals. Ryan then asked if he could be dismissed to his room, and I said "Sure." He got up and left us alone in the family room. Phil asked if I was ready for bed and I said "Yeah, I have a lot to do this week, and I will probably be late every day because I will have to plan activities, worksheets, and procedures for the substitute." We walked into the bedroom, stripped down to our boxer briefs and got into bed. We lay there and Phil began to share additional information about his Dad. He talked about how his Dad moved down from North Carolina and began working at a variety of jobs in the New Port Richey and Tampa area. He talked to me about his sister Meaghan and his brother Brandon. By the time he finished, I felt as though I had known them for years. Both of his siblings were married and had children of their own. Meaghan had married her high school sweetheart, and they had two children; one boy and one girl. Brandon on the other hand met his wife after going to Tallahassee to attend Florida State University; and he and his wife had three children; all boys. I could tell that Phil was very proud of his siblings, as well as, his nephews and niece. He talked about his parents and their lives together. He told me about their courtship, their engagement, their marriage, and their years together. He stressed that they really loved one another, and always seemed to be of one mind and definitely committed to each other and to their Church. Phil's Dad, Victor, was a Deacon in his church while his Mom, Eleanor was active in the choir and the Women's Auxiliary. Phil talked about his early years at home, and how their lives revolved around the Church. I felt that in so many ways, we had shared many of the same experiences in our early lives. This explained why we were so much alike and had shared opinions on many things. Phil began to slow down and finally, he said "Doug, I am going to roll over as I know you have a busy week ahead of you, and so do I. I just hope that I have filled you in on my family so that you will feel comfortable when you meet them next Sunday." I said "Phil, I will admit that I am nervous, but as long as I have you there with me, I can face anything. Now go to sleep and we will work through whatever life throws our way." We both rolled over on our sides with our backs to each other and fell asleep. Phil woke up first the next morning, leaned over, and woke me up with a kiss to my neck. I opened my eyes, rolled over, and smiled at him. He said "Doug, it's Monday morning and we have a lot of things to do, so let's get our shower, eat breakfast and tackle the world." I agreed, so I got up and joined him in the bathroom. We showered quickly and dressed for the day. I cooked a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns, and a slice of ham while Phil walked down and called Ryan to breakfast. Phil returned and said "Doug, he reminds me so much of me early in the morning, he is so groggy and funny as he opens his door, but he gets to the mission at hand and soon, here he is!" I laughed and rubbed Ryan on the head which aggravated him, as I had to hear about how long it took him to get his hair fixed and now he had to go back and work on it. I laughed at him; he turned and stuck his tongue out at me. Phil broke into laugher and said "Hey Ryan, make sure you get that little bit in the back combed down and do that little cute curl up front." That statement earned him an evil face, and we both laughed even louder. Finally, Ryan rejoined us in the kitchen, and we had a great breakfast. We gathered our stuff after breakfast and headed to our various locations. I arrived at school, did my usual routines and hurried down to my classroom. I began to pull a variety of past lecture notes and presentations and sent them to my home computer. The bell sounded and my day began. I greeted each class and asked how last week's testing had gone. Many of the students said that the tests did not seem as hard as they had expected, but this week the testing would consist of one day of math and two days of science. I asked if there were topics that they wanted to review and they named off several, so I launched into a review of that content. The classes seemed to fly by, and soon it was time for school to end and our practice session to begin. I talked with my department about my upcoming absence, and they understood. Maggie Marchwell volunteered to head up the practices on the four days that I would not be present. We worked doubly hard that day and made plans to do as much or more on the following days. I headed home after the practice session and prepared a quick supper of smothered cube steaks, mashed potatoes and gravy, LeSeur whole green beans seasoned with bacon drippings and cheese biscuits. Phil arrived as the biscuits were coming out of the oven. He came in, washed his hands and joined Ryan and me at the island. Ryan poured each of us a glass of sweet tea. We ate our meal and talked about our day. Phil told me that most of his jobs were on target, but he had one that was going to require his attention as the contractor had not adhered to the leveling and additional dirt requirements specified in his plans. He said that the failure of the contractor to follow the specifications would set him back several days and would have an impact on the well drilling and installation of the irrigation system. I said "Ryan, can you clean the kitchen as I need to go work on my plans for next week?" He said that he would as he did not have a lot of homework. Phil said he would spend his evening reviewing the plans for several projects and that he would meet me in the bedroom around ten o'clock. I worked on consolidating my PowerPoint presentations that evening so that my substitute Mrs. Hogglestand, the former department head, could easily take my students through their review. I decided that the next two nights would be devoted to developing worksheets to help the students do further review for the statewide assessments. I called it quits around ten, joined Phil in the family room, and then, we went to the bedroom. I told Phil that I needed a shower to relax, and he said "That sounds like a plan," so he joined me for a relaxing shower. We got out of the shower, dried off and went to bed. I was soon asleep, and so was Phil. I devoted my time and attention during the next three days to the statewide assessments in the mornings and to my classes during the abbreviated schedule after testing had ended each day. I joined my department members each afternoon, and we continued our practice sessions. I could definitely see an improvement in our performance and effort. I made simple dinners each night and continued my work on worksheets and lesson plans. I felt confident on Thursday night after I finished working on my plans and worksheets that my preparations would be what the students needed to study for their finals. I joined Phil in the bedroom and we had a short session of making out with a heavy concentration on oral sex. We climaxed, relaxed, and fell asleep. I awoke early on Friday morning as I found myself silently panicking as I thought about how much I had to have in place on my desk before I could leave school that afternoon. I was up about an hour and a half earlier than normal. I told Phil to tell Ryan that I would be late and that we would have to go out to eat as I did not want to come home and have to cook dinner. Phil said "Doug, that will not an issue with either one of us, the only issue that we will have is whether Myles will join us or not." I opted to not eat an official breakfast, but grabbed a breakfast bar, was out the door, and on my way to school. I drove in, parked and headed to the office. I gathered my stuff from the office and hurried to my room as I really wanted to begin to label folders by the day and lay them out with the appropriate worksheets, plans, and notes on my desk. I made a lot of progress only because I had worked so hard each night. I was working hard and then, the bell rang. I greeted the students and began my day with a review of the content that would be used on the upcoming final tests. Finals would be held the week after I returned. Later in the day, I opted to forego lunch and was working in my room making sure that I had my PowerPoints in order so that Mrs. Hogglestand could easily find them on my computer's desktop when I heard my door open. I looked up, and saw that it was the posse. I said "Hey guys! How are things going?" They said "Mr. Brunson, we have been studying really hard, and we wanted to tell you how much we appreciate your review and study sessions. I said "Is that all?" Landon said "No sir, we wanted to do a follow-up regarding the run-walk race." I raised my head and said "And?" He said "We have talked it over and decided that we needed to follow-up with you regarding the bet. We accept your terms." I was stunned as I thought they had been scared off, so I said "You do understand that I pick from the four of you and if I beat that one, he has to strip in front of me and me only, and if by chance he wins, then I strip in front of him and him only?" All four nodded their heads and Landon continued "So, we wanted to know who is your choice?" I said "I am not prepared at this moment to tell you who, but I promise that I will tell you next Friday as I have to be out of town from Monday through Thursday." I could tell that they wanted an answer now, but I was not ready to specify my competitor at that time. They turned and left me to finish my work. I felt that by the time the lunch period was over that I would be able to go home earlier than I had originally thought. I finished my afternoon classes, did hall duty, returned to my room and worked for an additional thirty minutes then, I went home. I walked into the house and headed to the bedroom; I stripped and took a long hot then, cold shower. I dressed in a pair of shorts and a polo shirt with my deck shoes. I was waiting for Phil to arrive and when he did, he was surprised to see me home. I said "By going to work early along with the work I did every night, it paid off, so I did not have to spend a lot of time after school." He took a quick shower and joined me. I called Ryan to find out where he was and as the phone began to ring, he walked in the front door. I looked at him and strongly suggested a shower as he was hot and sweaty. He smiled and said "Yep, that's what I was thinking!" He walked down to his room and shortly we heard his bathroom door open, close and the shower begin. In about ten minutes, the door opened, closed and his bedroom door opened and closed. In another ten minutes, he appeared in the family room and announced "Let's go!" We got up and got in the Denali. Phil announced "Tonight we are going to Outback, I want a steak, and it has been awhile since we have eaten there." I said "Sounds good to me" so I headed to that location and parked. We got out and had to wait for about thirty-five minutes then, we were seated. We ordered our drinks while we reviewed the menu. After our drinks arrived, we placed our orders for three rib-eyes cooked to our individual preferences, baked potatoes, and a salad with our preference of salad dressings. Our salads arrived along with a loaf of their baked bread and some butter. We munched on the buttered bread and our salads. We finished our salads and pushed the plates to the end of the table when our steaks and potatoes arrived. We began to cut into our steaks, mixed our butter and sour cream into our potatoes and then, we began to eat. The food was delicious, and we had to have a couple of drink refills as the food was hot, and we were extra thirsty. We finished our meal, paid the bill, and headed out to run a few errands, as I needed a few things before I left on my trip. We finished our errands and headed home. I told Phil and Ryan that I was going to bed as I had a lot to do in the morning, and I wanted to start early. I reminded Ryan to gather his dirty clothes and put them in the laundry room before he went to bed. Phil said that he would join me shortly, but he wanted to talk to Ryan. I walked to my bedroom and got into bed. Phil joined me in a few minutes and said that he had given Ryan some extra spending money to spend if he needed something next week. Phil undressed and got into bed. We talked about how we would spend our day, and he told me that he would be out of the house working with his crews on several projects. I told him that I would be washing, drying, folding, hanging, and packing our clothes. He said that he knew that, plus the fact that I would probably mop and clean the house. I said "You certainly know me don't you?" He smiled and said "Yes." We talked for a few more minutes and then, I cut the lamp off, and we went to sleep. I did not sleep that much as my mind was on everything that I had to do before I could leave town. I was up before either Phil or Ryan opened their eyes. In fact, I let Ryan sleep in until around ten o'clock as I didn't need him running in and out of the house. I began washing clothes and straightening up the house until Phil left then, I stripped our bed and washed the sheets and pillowcases. I washed Ryan's sheets and pillowcases after he was up. I vacuumed the floors and mopped the kitchen floor. I was cleaning house, but I was doing it differently than I usually do. I finished and was relaxing in the family room when Phil returned later that afternoon. I looked at him and he said "Don't even think about telling me how tired you are - you haven't had to deal with the contractor from hell." I said "Okay, I won't, but tell me who won. He said "I did of course, but he came close to being fired." He sat down by me and asked me where we were going for dinner. I said "I don't know, let's just chill here for a few minutes and maybe we will come up with something." The boys came bursting through the door shouting "Dad, Phil, we've been invited to Jay's for a cookout tonight. Isn't that cool?" I looked at Phil and said "Now, there's your answer." He said "I don't know why I am ever surprised around here, but I am so thankful tonight as I am tired, and I don't really want to go out, so this sounds good to me." I told Ryan to tell Meredith and Justin that we would gladly accept their invitation. He was out the door with his group following him. Meredith called me in about five minutes to tell me that the get-together would start in about an hour, and we were not to bring anything, but hearty appetites. I told her that we could do that. Phil and I quickly showered and dressed in shorts and polos. We walked over and joined the group that had assembled. Meredith had pulled together a great cook-out with hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, baked beans, coleslaw, and peach cobbler. We enjoyed the food and fellowship with our neighbors. Justin offered the blessing and asked for a blessing on Phil's father. Phil was touched by Justin's blessing and hugged him afterwards. The boys all gave Phil a hug and it brought him to tears. I was so proud of the boys because they were demonstrating an understanding of the feelings of others. We excused ourselves around ten o'clock and headed home. We stripped and crawled into bed, and it did not take us long before we were asleep. Sunday morning seemed to race to my house and announce its arrival. I woke Phil up, and we began to do our morning rituals. We finished packing and placed the bags in the Denali. Phil said that we would stop along the way and grab something for breakfast. Since Ryan had spent the night at Jay's, I texted Ryan to let him know that we were on our way. He texted back 'Be safe'. We backed out and were on our way to Tampa. We left the house by 6:30 and stopped at the first Hardee's we found on our way south. Phil said that since we had left early that we could go in, sit down, and eat our breakfast. We ordered a biscuit of our choice and a Coca-Cola. We resumed our drive south and made it to Tampa around two thirty since we hit some heavy traffic around Ocala and construction on I- 275. We checked into our hotel and then, rode over to the hospital in the Denali. I began to get knots in my stomach as I had never met his family, and I knew that they would be sizing me up. After I parked, Phil reached over, took my hand and said "Doug, they are good people, they put their pants and britches on just like you and I, one leg at a time." I had to chuckle as that was one of my Dad's favorite sayings. We walked into the hospital and rode the elevator up to his father's floor. We got off and walked down to the waiting room. Most of his family was gathered there so he introduced me to his Mom, his sister and brother-in-law and his brother and sister-in-law. They seemed extremely nice and cordial. He asked about his Dad and was told that the doctor was in with him, but would soon be out and down to talk to the family. We sat down and I listened to the family discuss his Dad's progress over the past week. As they were talking a middle-aged man approached and sat down among all of us. He looked at me and said "I don't believe that I have had the privilege." I introduced myself as a friend of Phil's and he said he was glad to meet me. Phil told him that I was cleared with the family to listen to the update on his Dad. The doctor began to review his Dad's condition and stated that the latest blood work did not show any deterioration or any positive results so for now we would just say that things had not changed. He talked to the family about what they could expect in the coming weeks. Phil asked if we could go and see his Dad. The doctor said that visits should be kept to a minimum as his Dad was extremely tired, so Phil and I walked down to his Dad's room. Phil introduced me and his Dad was extremely polite and welcomed me to Tampa. He asked Phil if he had taken me by the house yet. Phil said "No sir, we have a hotel room nearby as Doug did not want to impose on Mom." His Dad looked at me and said "Oh pish pash, we have always welcomed guests into our home, and I am sure that Eleanor will be a little put off that you two have settled for a hotel. She will feel that you have wasted money." Phil spoke up and said "Dad, we talked about this for a long time, and I have to agree with Doug that by staying at the hotel we are closer to you and will not spend a lot of our time commuting in the traffic." He looked at Phil and said "Whatever." I chuckled, and he returned his gaze to me. He said "I see that you two have an answer for all things." Phil chuckled and said "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." His Dad said "Yeah, yeah you sound just like your Mom." We visited for about ten minutes and then, we excused ourselves to allow other family member to visit. We returned to the waiting room, and Phil's Mom and sister went to visit. We listened to the on-going discussion that was being held by the remaining family members. Phil directed several questions to Brandon, who was able to put Phil at ease with his answers. Phil's Mom and sister returned to the waiting room and then, Brandon and his wife went for a visit. Phil's Mom turned to me and said that her husband was very pleased to have me with the family and beside Phil during this time of family crisis. I was touched because of the emotion that I heard in her voice. Phil got up, walked over, took his mother's hand, and sat by her. He said "Mom, I want to talk to you and Dad later privately as I have some things to tell you and some things that I want to make sure are addressed." She smiled and said "I understand Phil, you Dad has talked to me." I was a little concerned, but Phil did not seem bothered. We waited around the hospital and visited with his Dad a couple more times before his Dad sent us to the hotel because he said he knew that a drive like we had made could take it out of you, and he wanted us rested as he had to discuss some stuff with Phil, and with me. I was a little concerned that I was being brought into the family business, but his Dad said "If Phil trusts you, I trust you." I felt honored, and told him so. Phil and I left the hospital after talking to his Mom and Brandon. We gave them our hotel and room number in case they needed to contact us. We found a little restaurant on the way back and stopped in for dinner. The food was good, but frankly at that time of the day anything would have been good to me; I was tired and hungry. After we ate, we went to the hotel, showered, and went to bed. We did not do a lot of talking, as we both had a lot on our mind, and needed some time to process it. I think I fell asleep before Phil did that night. My mind was spinning on everything that I had heard and with the fact that I still had to practice for the run-walk. I woke up first, dressed in my work-out clothes, and did a run-walk for thirty minutes. I returned to the hotel to find that Phil was awake. We showered and were soon ready for the day. We went down to the lobby and had breakfast before going over to the hospital. We arrived and checked in with his Mom who had already made it to the hospital. She said that Brandon had dropped her off and would back later as he knew that Phil would be there early to check on his Dad. The three of us sat and talked and then, Phil decided that we all should go down and see his Dad. We entered the room, and Phil pulled three chairs in so that we could sit and visit. We talked about the news, the weather and finally, Phil's Dad said "Phillip, you told your Mom that you wanted to talk to us in private, so I think now is about the best that it is going to get." Phil looked over at me and then, back to his Dad. He said "Dad, you mentioned the other day that I was more settled than you had ever seen me and that you thought that I had found someone." He Dad nodded his head, and Phil continued "This is my someone Dad, it is Doug. We share a lot of similar backgrounds, we can finish each other's sentences, we support one another and above all, we trust and love one another." His Dad looked over at me and then, back to Phil and said "Phil, I sensed that when you two entered the room yesterday. Now you know that our Church does not condone a same sex relationship, but I have been doing a lot of reading and soul searching. I know you were raised in the Church, I know you are a good man, and I know that you have always been careful about relationships. As I told you the other day, I have sensed a positive difference in you. Your Mom and I have discussed it. We are happy for you, and I feel that Doug is a good person, and I am happy to welcome him as a member of this family." He then looked at me, and said "Doug, I want to talk to you later by yourself." My heart stopped beating, and I could hardly swallow. Doug's Mom looked at me and said "Doug, he has blessed you, so you can relax." I tried, but I couldn't until we had finished our talk. He then looked at his wife and Phil and said "I want you two to make sure that my wishes are carried out regarding my funeral. I have two scriptures that I want the service focused on, and I want Pastor Robert Ingraham to officiate." His wife said "Victor, I will make sure that your wishes are carried out and so will, Phil. You and I have talked about our faith, and how we want to be remembered numerous times." He said "I plan to talk to the family this week before Doug leaves so that all will know my wishes, and what I expect." Phil said "Yes Dad, we will meet with you, and I will make sure that the Doctor and the hospital staff understand that you want a meeting with all of your family at the same time." His Dad said "I expect to have that conversation be it in this room or somewhere else, but I want to talk to my entire family at the same time." Phil said "Yes sir." As we brought this conversation to an end, his Dad looked over at me and said "Doug, can we meet privately after lunch?" I said "Yes sir. I am available to you after lunch." He said "Phil take your mother out to some restaurant and make her eat something beside hospital food. She needs to get out of here for a while." We got up and left his room. Phil asked his Mom what she wanted to eat and she said "Phil, I am perfectly okay to eat here." Phil said "Mom, I have my marching orders, so we are going to leave and find some place nearby to eat and talk." We walked out and got into the Denali. Phil directed me to the Cracker Barrel Old Time Country Store. We went in, were seated, ordered our drinks, studied the menu and ordered our food. We all ordered the roast beef dinner with mashed potatoes and baby carrots, corn bread and sweet tea. We opted to forego dessert as Phil wanted to talk to his Mom away from his Dad. I tried to remove myself from the table, but Phil would not hear of it, so I sat there and listened to their conversation. Phil asked a number of questions related to the readiness of the Will, the Power of Attorney, The Living Will, and the Designation of Administrator. I was amazed at his knowledge and how he phrased his questions and follow-up responses. They finished their conversation and we returned to the hospital. Phil motioned for me to go on down to his Dad's room. I felt like I was walking my last mile, but I made my way down the hall and stood outside his room. I entered the room, and he motioned for me to pull a chair up next to his bed. I did as directed, and he said "Doug, I have a good feeling about you, but I want you to understand some things as my time on this earth is limited." I told him, I hoped that he had more time, but that decision was not mine to make and rested in the Lord's hands. He said "I agree with you, but a man must say some things to his loved ones before he departs for his heavenly reward." He said "Doug, Phillip is my oldest, he is very special to me, and I have worried about him for years, as there are things that a parent knows that the child doesn't think we know. He does not allow a lot of people into his life nor does he talk freely about his concerns or his business. I have often worried that he would live in his own world by himself until he is called home. I know he has shared my comments from the other day with you. I have recognized by his actions and comments that he has found someone that he trusts. I am happy about that, but I still have some religious concerns. I have studied the Bible and there are just some parts of the Old Testament that stand out and worry me, but I am going to place my faith in Matthew 22: 37-39 which state that (37) Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and (39) Love your neighbor as yourself...." I spoke up and said "Mr. Hearst, I too have studied the Bible and have had a heated discussion with my hometown pastor about his take on world events and actions within the United States. I am well versed in the sections that worry you, but I find more comfort in the New Testament and I have to believe that the Lord will bless those who honestly love and honor each other rather than just being in a relationship for sexual experiences. It relieves me and Phil to know that you have given this some thought and reached a level of acceptance. I did not go after Phil, nor did he go after me, we found each other when he responded to a call for bids on a project I was having done at my home. We have grown together and have supported each other emotionally and spiritually since that time. Phil acknowledges and stands by and on his Christian foundation. I would never encourage him to renounce his beliefs, nor would he ask me to do that to mine." Mr. Hearst smiled and said "I knew my take on you was right, I want you to feel that you are part of this family, and I give you and Phil, my Blessing. I will make my feelings clear when I meet with the family and the Pastor tomorrow." I thanked him and told him that he probably needed to rest. He agreed, and I slipped out and joined Phil and his Mom in the waiting room. I gave Phil a brief overview of my conversation with his Dad and mentioned that he wanted the pastor to attend the family meeting. Phil turned to his Mom and told her that his Dad wanted the pastor to attend, so she made the call and set a meeting time with the pastor for the next day at four o'clock. She then called Brandon and Meaghan and told them of the meeting's time and date. They agreed that they would be there with their spouse. We spent the rest of the day visiting with Mr. Hearst when possible. I shared some stories of my life before Phil with his parents especially the parts about being married and dealing with the divorce and eventually her death. I shared pictures of Ryan and the boys complete with stories of them, their actions, and their relationships with Phil. The stories seemed to lift the spirits in the room, and Phil sat back, listened, and added commentary when needed. After our six o'clock visit with his Dad, I told Phil that I would like to go back to the hotel, allow him some quality time with his family and let me get in some more run-walk practice. He objected, but I prevailed. I left and told him that if he would call me, I would come back and pick him up, but Brandon said "No, I will bring him by on my way home." I recognized that I was outnumbered, so I left after hugging Phil's Mom, Phil, and shaking Brandon's hand. I found a Wendy's and ordered a Home-style Chicken Sandwich Combo. I sat down in the dining room and ate my sandwich. I made a call to Ryan, and we talked for about twenty minutes. I finished the phone call, gathered my trash, put it in the trash can, and walked out to the Denali. I drove to the hotel, got out and rode the elevator up to our room. I walked in, changed into my workout clothes and took off down the street for about forty-five minutes. I returned to the hotel, ran up the stairs, opened our room door, entered, stripped, and took a shower. I finished, dried off, put on a pair of shorts and a T-Shirt just in case Phil brought his family up to the room. I lay down across the bed and dropped off to sleep. I woke up when Phil entered the room. He came over and lay on the bed with me. I asked him if he had eaten and he said that he and Brandon had taken their Mom down to the hospital cafeteria. He said "I want to clean up and get in bed with you." He showered and returned to the bedroom naked. I got up, stripped out of my shorts, pulled the covers back, and motioned for him to join me. We lay down, talked and then, he leaned over me and kissed me. I let my hands roam up his back and through his hair. He moved so that he was lying between my legs and I felt his hardness. I raised my legs around his waist and he moved further up so that he was beginning to poke me with his hard cock. I grabbed a pillow, placed it under my butt, and then, he began to poke at my hole. He began to emit a flow of pre-cum and soon he had enough there that I was lubed and he could easily enter me. After he entered me, he sank in until I could feel both his pubes and balls pushed against me. He said "I just need to feel you wrapped around me tonight, I need the closeness, and I love you so much." I leaned up and kissed his lips. He slowly began to move in and out of me. He moved me so that my legs were over his shoulders and then, he began to make slow and deliberate love to me. He finished and left me with a shot of his juice. He lay on top of me until he slowly eased out. He rolled over onto his back and we both dropped off to sleep. I woke up early and did my morning run-walk, returned to the room, and we got ready for the day. We spent Tuesday morning at the hospital talking with his Dad and Mom and making sure that we had his notes down so that he could talk to the family about his desires and concerns later in the afternoon. We took his Mom back to Cracker Barrel for lunch and then, out to some stores just to give her some time away from the hospital. We returned to the hospital around three o'clock. Phil checked with the hospital staff about his father's desires. They told him that they had arranged for the family to use one of the floor's conference rooms. We walked down and made sure that it would seat the number that would be in the room. Everybody including the Pastor began to assemble in the waiting room around 3:45. The nurses helped his Dad out of the hospital bed and into the wheelchair. Phil pushed his Dad down to the conference room, and everybody began to take a seat around the table. Mr. Hearst cleared his throat, and everybody turned to him. He began by saying "I have called each and every one of you here today as I have some things that I need to say to the group, and I need for you to understand and promise me that my wishes will be honored. He addressed the pastor and said "Pastor Ingraham, this is my oldest son and his very best friend, Doug. Doug is to be considered a part of my family." He looked around the room and made eye contact with each family member. "Now, I want all of you to understand that my time on this earth is limited. I know and accept that. I have lived a good life, and the Lord has provided for me in so many ways. I do not want a funeral. I want a celebration. I will have a traditional burial, but I want this to be a time of joy, and laughter. Meghan and the rest of you; do not shed tears for me as I will be in a better place and will no longer be in pain. Pastor, I have two scriptures that I want used: they are Ecclesiastes 3 verses 1-8 and John 14 versus 1 - 4. Both of these are appropriate for my feelings and should guide the celebration." He then proceeded to go through a number of details that he wanted such as favorite songs, no soloists, people who would be asked to deliver the eulogy, and a major stipulation which was that he did not want any of the family or other attendees to dress in black; he wanted vibrant colors everybody. We could tell that he was beginning to tire and so could he. He returned his focus to the family and told them how much he loved them and how vital they had been in his life. He ended paraphrasing John 14: 1-3 "Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also." I looked at Phil and he was tearing up. His Dad followed my eyes and said "Phil, these verses have brought me comfort, please read them and become familiar with them. Remember, no tears for me." Phil looked at him and said "Dad, I hear what you are saying, but my tears are for me, I am going to miss you so much." His Dad said "Phil, we are not promised unnumbered days here on earth, but we are in heaven. We have had good times, and I want you to be thankful for those, recall the good times, laugh and remember me." He ended the meeting by asking if anyone had any questions or comments. Everyone understood their Dad's wishes and so did, the Pastor. Phil wheeled his Dad back to his room and helped him into the bed. The rest of us assembled in the waiting room and decided to go down to the cafeteria for the evening meal. We were able to move several tables together so that we could sit together. We started off quiet as everyone was eating, but when most had finished, it became rather noisy. Being that I was now considered a part of the family, I was entertained with a variety of stories of Phil's early years, even his Mom dished on him. He was beet red when Brandon decided to tell about the time when Phil's swimsuit split at one of the local water parks and he had to walk out of the park with a gaping hole in the back of his swimsuit. Meaghan shared about the time that his imagination got the best of him as he was seeing things in the reflection of his bedroom window. It seems that he thought people were spying on him and wouldn't go in his room. Phil tried to retaliate with some stories of his own regarding his siblings, but they knew that they had him and were really enjoying giving him a rough time. I sat back and enjoyed this since, as an only child, I didn't have this type of family interaction. Phil's Mom decided that we had caused enough noise so; she called the group to order and urged some to go home and some to go say good night to their Dad. We went up and spent about forty minutes with his Dad and then, we went to our hotel. We showered, watched some TV, and called it a night. I was the first to wake up the next morning so I lay there and watched Phil sleep knowing that I would not see him for a few days. He finally opened his eyes and smiled at me. I leaned over and kissed him. He pulled me down and hugged me tightly. We got up, did our morning rituals, dressed in Dockers and buttoned down shirts, had a quick breakfast, and went to the hospital. We met Brandon on his way out of the hospital. He said that he had just dropped his Mom off and that, she was in with Dad. We went on up and checked in Dad's room. The nurse was doing some medical checks, so we opted to go sit in the waiting room. As soon as we saw the nurse leave, we returned to the room. Dad was in good spirits and said "Doug, I hear that you got the scoop on Phil last night." I smiled and said "Yes sir, he is not as saintly as I had been led to believe." Mr. Hearst chuckled and looked over at Phil. Phil said "They all ganged up on me, even Mom!" Mr. Hearst laughed and looked at his wife. He said "I wish I could have been there." Phil said "Well, I am kinda glad that you weren't. There was enough there to tell stuff that I wanted buried." I learned some more about Phil from his Dad, and soon we could tell that he was tiring, so we excused ourselves and returned to the waiting room. Phil's Mom went to the ladies' room, so he took that time to tell me that he felt that he needed to spend as much time with his Dad as possible. I told him that I understood, and he said "Doug, can we stay here for lunch and supper?" I said "I will do whatever you want to do. I would not want to cut your time short with your Dad." His Mom joined us, and we told her that we were going down to the cafeteria for lunch. She smiled, agreed with our decision, and we used the elevator to go downstairs. We found a table in the corner, talked, and had a good lunch. We returned after lunch to the waiting room and later that afternoon we returned to his Dad's room and spent time with him. I decided again to leave and return to the hotel so that the family could spend more time with Mr. Hearst. I promised to come by in the morning before I left Tampa. Phil walked me out to the Denali and told me that he would see me later tonight. He gave me a hug and a quick kiss on the lips. I got in, drove to Wendy's, ate and after I had finished my meal, I drove to the hotel. I walked to our room, entered, changed clothes, and left for my daily run-walk practice. I returned to the hotel, ran upstairs, walked to our room, opened the door, and stripped, showered, fell across the bed, and in a few minutes was sound asleep. I woke up when Phil opened the door and entered the room. He said "Boy, you better be glad that Mom didn't come up here with me." I chuckled, but I knew I would have died. He said "Let me grab a quick shower and then, I am going to join you. I need some quality time with you, as it will be days before we are together again. While he was in the shower, I got up and placed the bottle of lube on the bedside table. I turned the lamp down low and got back in bed. He came out of the bathroom still toweling his hair, and his cock was wiggling this way and that. I said "I wish you could see the show that I am watching" and laughed. He said "In a few we are going to be using your other senses." He dove across the bed and landed on his side of the bed. He raised the sheets and slipped under them, so that we were skin to skin. I leaned over and kissed him on the lips. I began to lightly kiss, his cheeks, his ears, his eyes, his neck, his shoulders, his nips, his chest, his abs, and down to his pubic hair line. I nuzzled his cock with my nose as it was reacting to my kisses. It began to harden, and I opened my mouth and offered it a warm moist cave to occupy. I began to circle his cock head with my tongue and then, I started sliding down his shaft all the way to his pubes and then, back up to its thick ridge. I added a few teasing tongue twists, and began to really add suction to his cock. I played with his balls, ran my hands through his trimmed pubes, and allowed my hand to go searching for his hole. I found his hole and began to press the outer edges. I leaned over and got the lube; I put some on my finger and dribbled some on his taint. I returned to probing around his hole and then, I moved my finger and pressed steadily. I gained entrance. I began to probe in and out with my middle finger. I found his prostate and began to probe and stroke it. Phil's cock began to harden and thicken. I had him to kneel on the bed with his back to me while I dribbled some lube on my cock. I pushed him over so that he was on all fours (doggie style). Then, I had him lower his head and raise his rear up. I aligned my cock with his hole, pressed in, and slide all the way to my pubes. I stroked in and out of him until things heated up, and I began to really pound him. His moans heightened my pounding, and he was begging for more. I felt him tighten around my cock and knew that he had just painted the sheets with his juices. I felt my cum rising up my cock, and I unloaded in him. I leaned over and lay on his back. Finally, my cock began to soften and slid from him. I fell over to my side of the bed. He leaned over and kissed me. I turned off the light and spooned him. He talked for a few minutes and then, there was quiet in the room. The next morning, I awoke early as I had a lot on my mind. I decided to wait until I got home to do my run-walk practice. I had to shower, dress, pack, go to the hospital, and hit the road. All of these things kept flying through my head so I decided to get up and get started on some of them. As I moved on the bed, Phil woke up and pulled me back down. He said "Not just yet, and he pushed me on my back and dove down to my cock. He began to give me a wonderful blow job, so I moved him so that I could get to his cock and I began to suck him too. We enjoyed our time playing with each other's balls and pubes. He came before me, but I followed soon afterwards. We got up, showered together, dressed, went down to breakfast, came back to the room, packed, loaded up, and checked out. We drove separately to the hospital. We went up and checked on his Dad. I visited for about an hour and then, I was on my way home. I made a stop for something to eat in Gainesville, Florida. I had a fried chicken garden salad, and iced tea. I got back in the Denali and headed home. End of Chapter 40 - My Son and His Friends Thank you for reading Chapter 40.
