He didn't recognize the guy who was face down in her bed, his arm draped over her. Thankfully the sheet was still covering them, but he knew they were naked. Nick sighed, stepped back, and closed the door. Rummaging in the kitchen he found some bread, buttered it, and sprinkled a layer of sugar on top. There was no use looking for cereal, there wasn't any milk. He knew there would be a little money the next day. His mom always got paid at the end of the week, but waitresses didn't earn very much. Mom had found their place by accident, having heard a bar owner talking about fixing up the third floor attic apartment above the tavern. Nick liked it at first; it seemed spacious and was in good repair. Over time he learned that living in the downtown area near the bars had its problems. Nick looked at the clock and saw it was half past eight, still forty five minutes before the library opened. He decided to take a walk. He made his way across the street and down toward the river. It was three blocks to the small park. Nick liked that it bordered the edge of the river. He had his pick of spots at that time of the morning, and sat down on a bench facing the Mississippi. A replica paddle wheel boat sat moored at the end of a small pier. Tourists paid fifteen dollars to take a ride up river a few miles and then back again. He thought he might like to try it himself someday. Still, Nick loved the quiet, the beauty of the trees, and majesty of the water. He occasionally imagined himself as Huck Finn. He'd build a raft and nothing would hold him back. He sat on the bench until he figured it was late enough and the library would be open. "I hope Daniel is there," he thought and started walking back up town. The library was fifteen long blocks away. * * * * Daniel stuffed a few papers, a couple of pens, and two bottles of water into his knapsack. He started to zip it closed but then glanced back at the kitchen. Some apples sat in a bowl on the counter and a box of granola bars was in the cupboard. He grabbed a couple of apples and three granola bars and tossed them into the bag with the other things. "In case Nick is hungry," he thought. Daniel had to admit he looked forward to seeing the little guy. On some level Nick reminded him of himself. He remembered how much he needed a friend during those early years. And, he smiled, "he's kind of cute." When he had spoken to Logan the night before and told him about Nick, he had failed to mention one thing, his age. Daniel shook off the thought and headed for his car. * * * * It would have been difficult to say which of the guys had the bigger smile. Both seemed pleased to see the other. "We're going to have to stop meeting like this," Daniel joked as Nick sat down next to him. Nick looked shocked. "Why do you say that?" He asked, apparently worried. "People will talk," Daniel laughed. Nick looked around the room, "talk about what?" Daniel grew more serious, "I don't want anyone to get the wrong idea about me." "Why would they do that?" "Nick, when I was in college, I never had a girlfriend." "So?" Nick shrugged. "I did have a boyfriend though," Daniel said gently. Nick blushed, but then smiled. "Do you know what I just said?" Daniel asked. "Yeah, you just said you liked guys." "That doesn't bother you?" Nick grinned, "I guessed that three weeks ago!" "What?" Daniel laughed. "I saw the way you looked at me," Nick giggled. Daniel was stunned. "It doesn't make any difference to me what you like, boys, girls, whatever." Daniel shook his head, amazed at how simple it was for Nick. Nick grinned shyly. "So are we done now?" Daniel paused for a moment. "Yeah, I guess we're done," he whispered. Nick smiled, "Excellent! Oh, and by the way, if you get a boner, don't worry about it. I get them all the time!" Daniel laughed, "You little shit!" * * * * Over the next few days the guys fell into a comfortable routine. They would meet at the library, read for a few hours, break for food, and then return. Nick loved his tales of knights, and Daniel slogged through his reading list. "You know, we're missing some great summer days," Daniel said one afternoon as they pulled into the parking lot after lunch. "I was thinking that too," Nick said with a glance. "They say it's going to be near eighty tomorrow," Daniel turned to Nick. "Want to go to the beach?" Nick grinned, "Yeah!" "Do you have a swim suit?" "It's a little small, but I've got one." "Where should I pick you up?" Nick seemed to struggle for an answer. "Don't worry, it doesn't matter to me where you live," Daniel said softly. "I live on Third Street," Nick said with embarrassment. "Tell me what corner to meet you." "State." "Third and State it is," Daniel smiled, "How does ten sound?" "That works," Nick smiled back. * * * * Nick looked over the old concrete changing house as he and Daniel walked from the car. It had been built back in the 1950's and looked it. Paint was peeling from the exterior, the stucco was cracked, and the walkway in disrepair. It clearly needed work. "I haven't been here in a couple of years," Nick said, making a sour face as they walked inside, "It's worse than I remember, it's kind of gross." "Yeah, definitely not as nice as going to the pool but it isn't every day you get to swim in the river," Daniel laughed. He tossed his gym bag on one of the benches. "Ready?" Daniel smiled reassuringly as he started to unbutton his shirt. "I have my suit on under my jeans," Nick shrugged. "That way mom wouldn't ask a lot of questions." Daniel nodded and tossed his shirt aside. Nick stared. Daniel was nearly six feet tall, well proportioned, and had an amazing set of abs. He was smooth everywhere except for a small dark trail of hair that started just above his navel and headed south. Nick watched as he turned, unzipped his jeans, and pushed them down. He was wearing boxer briefs, which he stripped off and tossed to the floor. "Are you going to change, or just stand and stare?" Daniel laughed. Nick blushed, "I haven't seen many guys with abs like that!" "You can thank my ex-boyfriend. He was a real work out nut." Daniel smiled. Nick pulled his shirt over his head, embarrassed that all he had to show was a boyishly thin chest. He glanced over again as Daniel turned and stepped into a jock. His good size dick was uncut, and what appeared to be an equally impressive set of balls hung low in a smooth sack. Daniel pulled on a surfer length suit and tied the string to hold it up. Nick unbuttoned his jeans and pushed them down. His suit was somewhat shorter and definitely a bit small for him. The fabric was noticeably tight on his rear end. The guys stuffed their clothes into the gym bag and headed to the beach. Three lifeguards sat in tall chairs surveying a roped off area of the river. Daniel spread a couple of beach towels on the sand and they made their way to the water. The river was cool, the current a bit fast, the color of the water a dirty brown. The sun was hot on their shoulders and backs, but Nick and Daniel didn't mind. They dove under whenever they felt the need to cool off. As the sun reached it's highest point, Nick was starting to get pink. "Let's get some sunscreen on you," Daniel laughed when Nick pointed it out. Daniel nodded toward the beach. Nick sat on one of the towels. Daniel opened the bottle and squirted some of the cool lotion on his shoulders and back. Daniel's hands felt strong as he rubbed the cream into his skin. "That feels nice." "It does?" "Yeah, want me to put some on you?" Daniel held the bottle out and Nick eagerly took it. "On your stomach," Nick suggested. Daniel complied. "You're right, it does feel nice," Daniel chuckled. Nick found he liked the feel of Daniel's skin. He paused a couple of times as he rubbed more cream over his back. "You keep doing that and I'll bone up," Daniel laughed. Nick giggled. "Well, fair is fair, you already did it to me!" Daniel grinned. "I did?" Nick blushed, "Like I told you before, I get them all the time." Daniel chuckled. "We better head back into the water before someone sees it." Nick gave Daniel a playful slap on the ass, "I bet you can't catch me!" he laughed and ran off, Daniel in hot pursuit. * * * * "Thanks, Daniel," Nick smiled, getting out of the car, "It was really fun." "I had a good time, too." Nick paused a moment longer. "Daniel?" "Yeah?" "Thanks for being my friend." Daniel choked up and couldn't speak, he just nodded. Nick turned and hurried down the street. * * * * The villagers were screaming and the sound of banging and crashing could be heard for miles. Nick tossed and turned as he sensed the dragon approach. He looked for a weapon. He reached down and picked up a stick. He knew it would do no good. There was another crash and he woke. The sound of a man's voice from the other room carried through the door. "Goddamn slut!" There was another crash as something was thrown against a wall. Nick hunkered down, pulled the blanket over his head, and hoped for the best. * * * * The next morning Nick lay in bed as long as he could, afraid to venture out. Finally his need to pee was too great. He pulled on his jeans and carefully made his way to the bathroom. He saw pieces of a broken whiskey bottle on the floor and a stain on the wall. He unzipped and pulled out his dick. As he peed, he listened for sounds coming from his mom's bedroom. It was quiet. He flushed and zipped up again. He was startled when he turned and found his mom standing in the doorway. "Sorry, Nicky," she mumbled, I didn't know you were in here. Nick lowered his eyes and squeezed past her. Dressed in a worn nightie and a poorly fitting robe, his mom looked much older than her actual age. Life had been hard. Nick thought that it showed. He also noticed something else. "Where did you get that bruise?" His mom turned her face away, trying to hide the puffy area just under her right eye. "I bumped into the door," she mumbled. Nick knew it was a lie, but just let it go, like so many other things. "You should put some ice on it," he suggested as his mom closed the bathroom door. "I'm going to the library again," he called out before heading back to his room to change. He was saddened when he didn't get the courtesy of a reply. * * * * It was two nights later when the dragon returned. Nick woke to the sound of his mother's voice as she cursed the man and told him to "get the hell out!" There was more yelling, and finally the slam of a door. Nick didn't hide this time. He pulled on his pants and headed for his mom. He found her drunk and sprawled on her bed. Her eyes were glazed and she was mumbling. "Mom?" he whispered as he stood in the doorway. She looked in his direction, "Nicky? How's my baby?" Nick couldn't take any more. It was all too much. He sobbed, and the tears came. "I hate you! I hate you!" he screamed, and ran to his room. He pulled on a shirt, his socks and shoes, and ran for the door. The street was nearly deserted. The bars had been closed for a while and only a hand full of people were still out. Nick ran to the end of the block and raced around the corner. He ran and ran until he couldn't run anymore. He slowed, but didn't stop. He had to escape. Things looked different in the dark. His anger faded and a new feeling took its place. Small sounds startled him, the shadows seemed menacing. The screech of a cat scared him. Finally he was there. He climbed the steps and stood on the landing, uncertain what to do next. He pounded on the door, and then pounded again. The waiting was the worst. * * * * Daniel was deep in sleep when he heard a noise. He slowly woke, and after a moment realized there was someone at his door. He crawled out of bed and pulled on some shorts. Padding to the door he undid the latch and opened it. There stood Nick, tears running down his cheeks. He looked up and sobbed, "Daniel?" Daniel reached for him. "I'm here," he whispered, and Nick fell into his arms. * * * * Thanks for reading chapter 2. Let me know what you think. Playbuddy123@yahoo.com Jon.
