Before I start, sorry it's been a long time since I wrote a chapter on
Noah. I fell sick not long after I wrote the last chapter and ended up in
the hospital. It took some time, but I'm much better now and have written a
few solo stories since. I'd kinda let Noah drift off, but recently a few
emails arrived from readers asking about another chapter and especially
from one reader who not only sent positive comments, but also some
constructive ones as well.

Noah: Chapter 21

Sleep is for the weak, or at least my boys thought so.

I was woken by 4 boys jumping on my bed and all I heard was, "It's snowing!

for their joy, i might have went back to sleep, instead I pulled one of

is fair?" I feigned being mad and grabbed Jai by his foot and drug him to

Jai began jerking around wildly, "Dad! Oh my gawd! Please stop! I'm gonna
pee!" All this while laughing uncontrollably. I slowed down and just poked
him in the side, Jai was a jumble of nerves and giggles. I was surprised at
how open and fun loving he was now versus the serious young boy I'd met in
Korea. He'd been so protective of Lyn back then and I'd thought he had lost
his childhood, but here he is, relishing our play time, a full partner in
the fun being had.

The other boys were bashing each other with my pillows, I looked at Jai and
then looked at them, then back at Jai and winked at him, Jai smiled broadly
and slowly grabbed one of my pillows and I did the same. We pounced like
wild cats, we began swinging out and sadly, poor Noah was our first victim,
he'd turn towards the noise and I and Jai hit him simultaneously, right in
his face and chest! Noah toppled over laughing joyfully.

Peter and Lyn both realizing they were at our peril began swinging wildly
and yelling like warriors from Lord of the Rings! Jai was laughing at Noah
when Peter connected with the side of his head, Jai fell over dramatically
which caused the two attackers to laugh and high five each other. As they
slapped hands, I swung my pillow and took them both out. Peter's eyes got
big just as the pillow connected and he fell over like a top! Lyn was a
glancing blow, but Peter falling tripped him up and he fell on top of
Peter.

Jai and I jumped up and down on the bed, yelling loudly, "We win! We Win!"
The other three were not happy at our victory but like all good boys, they
finally conceded and we all high fived each other. I brought the boys back
to earth with one question, "did I hear snow was falling?"

The boys all began talking at once, I waved for them to hush and said,
"Peter, let me hear from you first." Peter looked around and all the boys
nodded. Peter smiled, "Dad, me and Lyn were awake just talking in bed when
I noticed that it wasn't bright, like it was cloudy, so I opened the blinds
and I almost couldn't see for all the snow falling! We woke up Jai and he
said that you'd want to know, so we knocked, only you didn't answer, but
Noah heard us and opened the door, we all decided to wake you up with the
news!"

"Thank you Peter, your description was, as usual, concise and to the point,
let's get ready for breakfast, but first, let's look out my window!" We all
went to my large window which faced the town below us. I opened the heavy
drapes and BOOM! Instant whiteout. The snow was heavy and you could barely
see the trees out by the perimeter of the cabin's yard.

"Boys, let's hurry and make sure we have some supplies. Jai, inventory the
kitchen and pantry. Noah, check on firewood, Peter and Lyn, gather blankets
and start filling up any container with tap water, I fear we may be stuck
for a little bit."

I quickly showered and got dressed, I headed downstairs and everyone was
doing something. I headed into the kitchen, Anna was busy making a huge
stew and Helen was making waffles for breakfast. Jai was jotting down on a
list he'd created. Helen handed me a cup of Kona, "Limit yourself Wes, we
were planning on a store run today, but apparently, Mother Nature decided
to make other plans." We both chuckled and she went back to her waffle
iron. "Tell the boys 10 minutes will you?" I agreed and made my exit.

The younger three were busy as well. Peter and Lyn had stacked all the
spare blankets in the living room and Noah was ready to report on the wood
supply. "So love, how's our wood supply?" Noah shook his head, "It looks
like we've got enough for three days if we just keep it low." I was a tad
concerned as the snow up here can be severe, "If we get a break, we will
need to go collect firewood out in the tree line." Noah agreed and I sent
him to check our water collection process.

I checked my weather app and it looked like there'd be a break in a few
hours. I set my timer to be ready at that time and I ran upstairs to check
the roofline and making sure that all the vents were shut to preserve heat
in the main areas.

Pretty soon I checked the radar and we had an hour of marginal weather, so
I gathered up the boys. "Ok, we have 45 minutes to gather up limbs and any
wood we can burn in the fireplace. Go get dressed in your ski clothes and
boots, we gotta hurry!" My three boys ran upstairs and I realized that
Noah's stuff was next door! "Ok Noah, let me get dressed and I'll get you
over to the other cabin on my back, it'll only take a minute to get you
there." He agreed and I dashed upstairs.

Helen was waiting when I came down, "While you're both there, grab up the
snacks we have in our kitchen, Anna and I have a thing for Doritos..." We
both laughed and she kissed Noah, "Be safe!" We walked out and the first
thing I noticed was how eerily quiet it was. I motioned for Noah to climb
on up and we took the steps down to the snow covered ground.

A minute took like five, but we made it safely. Noah ran up to his room and
I went in the kitchen. I was kinda surprised, there were like 6 family size
bags of chips! I opened the fridge and saw what looked like 4 jars of
salsa.... "Apparently, these women were closet junk food junkies! I
chuckled and then grabbed a few bags and loaded it all up.

Noah came down all dressed in his snow clothes, he looked just as he did
almost a year ago! He smiled as I just looked him over. "You remind me of
this kid I met up here a while back." Noah moved into my arms and I hugged
him tightly, "I'm glad I met that kid, but we need to go, the boys are
waiting."

We got back and dropped off the chips and I gathered the boys on the
porch. "Ok, we are going to gather wood. I will have us split up into
pairs, Jai and Peter, and I'll have Noah and Lyn. Jai spoke up, "Dad, I
brought the walkie-talkies, figured we would keep in contact." I patted his
shoulder, "You are one smart young man Jai, that's why I love you, ok guys,
do not grab heavy, just grab limbs that can be broken up by hand, and if
you find pieces of logs, bring them up to the porch, now go!"

In the 45 minutes we were outside, the boys had accumulated a huge stack of
limbs and twigs, there were also some small logs. We separated them on the
porch and the boys all chipped in. "Boys, you all did an amazing job, I'm
very proud of you all, let's get inside and get warm."

Just then I noticed a limb had fallen down at the base of the steps. I
started to walk down and my feet came out from under me and I fell hard. I
heard Jai yelling, "Dad!" But the pain coming from my ankle was intense and
I felt sick to my stomach. Jai and Noah were by my side in a nano
second. They sent Peter and Lyn inside as they attempted to get me up.

used the stair rail to help me face towards the door, by then, Anna and
Helen had come out to help. With the help of all of them I was able to get
to a chair in the living room and prop my leg up on the ottoman.

Helen took charge quickly, she had Jai take off my boots and socks. My
ankle was already swelling up. Helen was very no nonsense, she grabbed my
foot and quickly rotated my foot, which made me scream, "Relax now, it's
not broken, but the sprain is bad. I'm gonna put some ice on it first then
heat. I'll give you a painkiller and you'll need to sit still for a bit."

Noah propped up my foot with a pillow, Jai was doing the ice packs and
alternating them with hot, wet cloths. Lyn and Peter stayed close and just
talked quietly so as not to disturb me. Helen's painkiller kicked in and I
drifted off.

Anna fed the boys stew and homemade bread, and her and Helen kept an eye on
me. I woke as it was getting dark and Anna brought me a tray with the best
beef stew ever and some big hunks of warm bread. "Thank you Anna, you are
the best, I'm so glad you are here, the boys and I love you so much." Anna
smiled, "I think that pain pill muddled your brain Wes." We both laughed
and she pecked my cheek, "You are the reason I chose to be here, I saw what
you were trying to do with Jai and Lyn, and although you were doing ok, I
knew I could help you, and in the end I have 4 grandsons and a man who I
consider my son, I've been very lucky this year." It was my turn to peck
her cheek, "Love you too!"

I ate all my stew and bread, but I was worn out. Helen gave me another
painkiller and the boys helped me upstairs. I had Noah help me get into
some shorts and a t-shirt and then he propped up my foot. "Thank you for
your help love, you and Jai have been super today." Noah smiled brightly,
"You freaked us out a little, I guess we were scared but knew we had to
help."

"You find your strengths in times of trouble Noah, what I saw was too very
good, smart boys, doing their best to help me, that speaks volumes to me,
so just take my thanks and know I love you very much." Noah crawled up on
the bed and moved to where he was cuddled up against me, "Love you too Wes,
and I was scared, like a million thoughts went thru my mind when you fell,
mainly I was scared you would die or something, but I still jumped cause I
love you too."

We just cuddled and talked quietly and eventually I fell asleep again, Noah
and Jai played nurse and made sure to change our ice packs for heated
clothes for most of the night. I woke up around four a.m. Noah was cuddled
against me, and Jai was in the sitting chair, reading a book. I grumbled,
"Jai? You still awake?" Jai looked up surprised, "Hey Dad, yea, I've been
switching out your ice and heat. Anna will be up in a few to relieve me."

I looked over and smiled, "I've already talked to Noah, but I wanted you to
know how proud I am of you, you really took charge and I really appreciate
it. If you and Noah hadn't helped, I don't know how I would've gotten up
and just, thank you Son for being a good young man." Jai smiled, "It was
how you would have dealt with it Dad, I just learned from you." I smiled,
"That may be partly true, but you've been a take charge guy since day one,
and the way you treat the boys is exactly what a big brother does, so I say
you are an example to all of us, so take the compliment Jai, it's well
deserved."

Just then, Anna showed up to relieve Jai, Jai came over and kissed my
cheek, "Good night Dad, I love you." I kissed his cheek, "I love you more."
Anna switched to an ice pack and commented, "Looks like the swelling has
gone down a bit." I yawned, "Anna, go to bed, I'm gonna go back to sleep
and your changing these pack is going to wake me." Anna smiled, "I
understand, but we will continue this at first light." With that she left
the room.

I woke up at around 4 am, The sounds outside were not promising, the wind
was whipping around and I felt a tad cold. Noah must've sensed that I was
awake, "Wes, are you ok?" I pulled him close, "Yes love, I'm a bit chilly
is all." Noah reached for another blanket at the foot of the bed and pulled
