I assumed we lost power. I was sitting up as Helen came in. "Morning Wes, and yes, we lost power. Luckily we have a gas stove, so breakfast is coming up." She made me lay back on some propped up pillows, then she smiled at me, "You know this may hurt a bit?" I knew from yesterday and nodded my assent. She held my lower leg and the heel of my foot and slowly rotated it, I felt it immediately, but the pain was no where near as bad as yesterday. Helen checked the swelling, then smiled, "I think you'll be walking tomorrow, albeit a tad slower than usual, gonna suggest you move downstairs and keep it propped up." Just then Peter knocked on the door, "Can I come in Dad?" I quickly agreed and Peter came in, balancing a tray with a plate of food and utensils, behind him was Lyn carrying a travel mug with hopefully some java! Peter sat the tray down and stepped back as Lyn sat the mug on the tray. They both looked worried and seemed afraid to approach me. Helen, always the practical one spoke up, "He's gonna be ok, get up there and give him hugs!" The two boys practically knocked over the tray as they scrambled up to begin hugging me! I was overwhelmed by their love and it was a great feeling to know how much they loved me! Peter's eyes were damp, so I wiped them with my hands, "No need to cry buddy, it's a sprained ankle, I'm gonna be fine in a few days." Peter hugged me tightly, "I was afraid I was gonna lose you too!" I patted his back, "I understand Peter, but I'm not going anywhere, I promise I'll be more careful, ok?" Peter wiped his eyes and sniffled, "I love you Dad, I'm glad you're ok, and don't scare me and Lyn again!" I had to laugh at his demands, but understood his reasoning too. "You and Lyn will have to put up with me for a very long time, I hope you guys know I love you all and want to see you grow up to be good men, so, go eat and let me rest a bit ok?" I gave them both a kiss and shoo'd them out. Helen was facing the window, I could see she was deep in thought, "You ok Helen?" She turned around, she'd been crying a little, "I'm sorry Wes, you guys do this to me!, I'm such a crybaby, ugh!" I laughed, "Those boys all make me a crybaby, I can't imagine life without them, and they love their Aunt Helen, so don't fret , they need you and Anna as much as they need me." Helen smiled, "Wes, sometimes you are smarter than I thought! I'm sending Jai and Noah up to help move you to the living room." With that, she went out the door. I forced myself up and using the wall and furniture, worked my way to the bathroom and grateful that the shower was a walk in, took a cold shower and brushed my teeth. By the time I'd got dressed, I could hear the boys pounding up the steps. Noah practically bounced in and stopped when he saw me standing. "Ahhhh.... Wes? Mom said you needed help going to the living room?" I laughed, "Yea, I'm holding myself up, but no way can I get downstairs by myself." Jai smiled, "I think you freaked Noah out, he was expecting you to be in bed." We all laughed, "Alright guys, help your old man down the stairs, same as last time, Jai on the bad side." We made it downstairs and immediately I could feel the warmth of the fireplace and could smell something delicious coming from the kitchen. Jai and Noah got me settled down and leg propped up. Anna came out with a tray heaped with what I call breakfast! Scrambled eggs, a heap of bacon and home fries, "Enjoy Wes, when we get home, it's back to light foods for you!" She laughed as she headed back to the kitchen. Noah sat down on the arm of my chair. He leaned into me and I smiled up at him and didn't notice him pilfer a piece of bacon from my plate til he jammed it into his mouth, "Noah! Did you not eat breakfast earlier?" Noah pouted, "Yes, but that was like 30 minutes ago, I'm a growing boy...." I lightly pushed him off the arm and he giggled, "Be gone Judas Iscariot!" Noah looked confused, but went to find the other boys. After breakfast, I fell back asleep, when I woke hours later, I noticed a difference in the atmosphere, I heard a television in the background! I realized that the power had returned and gave a sigh of relief, none of us were prepared for a long struggle as far as I could see. Peter and Lyn were quietly playing a game of Chutes and Ladders on the floor, Jai was reading a Charles Dickens book and Noah was flipping through channels on the TV. I cleared my throat and Jai looked up, "Jai, could I bother you to get me something cold to drink, preferably water?" Jai hopped up and headed for the kitchen. A few seconds later, Helen walked out with water and a thermometer.... "Do me a favor and let me get a temp on you before you drink water, you look kinda peeked to me." I didn't get to say anything as she slipped the thermometer under my tongue as she checked my pulse. A slight beep and she pulled it out and made a "hmmmmmpf!" noise. "You've got a slight fever, 100.2, I think it's just a slight cold, but we will check it later tonight. Take these aspirin with your water now." I did as asked, then she put her hands under my jaws and looked a bit funny, "Wes, your lymph nodes are swollen, you feel bad?" I shook my head, "No, actually I wanna get up and move around, I've been on my back since yesterday and I'm bored!" Helen looked at me, "I'll let you go upstairs, I think I need to check a few things more, Boys, get your Dad upstairs now, Wes, no arguments, I am a bit worried, and I'm a doctor, so just amuse me for now, ok?" I put my hands up in defeat, "Ok Doc, you're the boss..." Jai took his place and Noah took the other side. I was up in a jiffy, but coming up too quick got me a bit woozy. Helen had to steady me, her eyes betrayed her, as she looked more than worried. "Get him in bed boys, and I'll be up in a minute." I was a bit surprised how Jai kept me upright and made sure I didn't move too fast, his strength was another surprise, he probably could have done it alone, but Noah needed to be a part of it. I used the facilities and cleaned up a bit, then donned shorts and a t-shirt and got into bed. Noah sat near me on the bed and looked worried. Just then, Helen walked in with her medical bag and surmised the situation, "Noah honey, I need to examine Wes, it needs to be private, I'll call you up when I'm done, ok?" Noah looked from his Mom to me, I nodded lightly, "Go on Noah, it'll be quick." Noah kissed my cheek, then quickly walked out. Helen smiled, "You've done good by him Wes, he loves you, that's for sure, in that department, we both are lucky...." Helen turned into the professional she was and did a very thorough examination, to include my lower half.... slightly embarrassing to me, but she acted like a trained professional. Her main concern increased as she checked my other lymph nodes and all were slightly swollen and warm to the touch. She sat on the bed and grasped my hand, "Wes, I think we need to get you to a hospital as soon as we can, one or two swollen lymph nodes are concerning in regards to infections, more than that and it's something else that needs to be tested quickly. MRI's and X-Rays and blood work are needed, it could be something as simple as an infection, but I've got to be sure, so, as fast as I can get you out of this winter wonderland, you are getting checked into the closest major hospital, no arguments, my son loves you, so do I. We want what's best for you." I was a bit stunned. I remember nodding my agreement, but I couldn't get my head around all that had happened in just 2 days.... After a glass of water, Helen tucked me in and said she'd talk to everyone downstairs before sending Noah up. She turned down the lights and closed the door behind her.. I think I fell asleep in very short order.... I woke up when Noah slid into bed next to me, I could feel his fears emanating almost out of every pore of his body. He pulled in tight against me and laid his free arm across my chest. I patted his hand and turned towards him and kissed his tear streaked cheeks, "Noah love, please let's just sleep tonight, we will talk tomorrow, tonight I just wanna cuddle with you, ok?" Noah shook his head and we did just that, held each other, and slept like babies.... I never got the chance to have that discussion the next morning, as I was awoken by Helen telling me that they'd plowed the road and an ambulance was on it's way up. Noah was sleeping peacefully and I didn't want to wake him up so abruptly, I kissed his cheek and with Helen and Anna's help, I got downstairs right as the ambulance pulled up.... Helen was allowed to go with me as attending physician. We were headed to the regional hospital which would take 45 minutes to get to. I dozed off on the gurney and heard Helen tell the EMS guy that my temp had spiked up. I woke up strangely, I kept seeing lights above me and realized that I was being rolled down a hallway on a gurney. I looked to my left and Helen was walking beside me, I felt all clammy, "Hey Doc, hows things?" Helen looked down at me, "Well, your temp went up to 104, you never woke when we switched gurneys and you're headed to radiology, they're gonna do an MRI, we've already drawn blood samples, so you just get to lay there and let them do their jobs." As we entered radiology, a Doctor who looked younger than either of us was waiting, Apparently, he knew something of Helen as he was effusive in his compliments towards her and her work outside the U.S. They discussed me in a very clinical way and she described my symptoms, The doctor had me go behind a screen and put on a hospital gown, then I was led to the "bed" I would lie on while in the MRI. After several passes on the MRI, i heard the machine power down and then Helen and the other Doctor came out from another room, "Wes, let's get you off the table and I'm pretty sure we need to get on a plane home as soon as possible." I looked at her and she nodded, "There is a mass in your shoulder, we will need a biopsy as soon as possible." TBC
