Helen gave up on cheering me up and spent her time reviewing the pictures from my MRI and emailing some Oncologists she knew in the area. I was exhausted when we arrived at SFI and Helen suggested we grab hotel rooms as my first consultation was in the morning. I agreed and grabbed a rental car and drove to the Marriott near the airport. I had just grabbed a shower and had put on my gym trunks and a t-shirt when I heard my phone chirp on an incoming message. It was Noah! It was a selfie of him, he was wearing one of my t-shirts and below he's written, "Missing you badly!, hope you're ok." I'm not great at selfies, but I managed to get one of me as I leaned on pillows against the headboard. "Missing you too Love, I'm ok, seeing a specialist tomorrow morning, you should get some sleep." He quickly texted back, "I will, and we leave tomorrow at noon, see you very soon!!!" Sometimes I get teary-eyed and tonight I felt the fat tears rolling as I texted him back, "Can't wait to see you! Hopefully we will see each other tomorrow afternoon!!!" I shut the phone down and put it on charge, I was terribly tired and drifted off to sleep quickly. I was awoken by the room phone ringing loudly, "Hello?" Helen sounded chipper, "Time to get up, meet me in the restaurant downstairs in 30." I agreed and hung up. I swung out of bed and set my feet down gingerly as the ankle was still sore, but bearable. I grabbed my shaving kit and headed to the bathroom. The need to pee was apparent, so I relieved myself and after teeth, a shave and a shower, I quickly dressed and grabbed up my bag and headed downstairs. Helen was sipping coffee as I approached the table. She'd gotten me a Kona and after a nice sip, I was ready to order. I'm not much for buffets, especially breakfast buffets, but the menu was loaded with hearty breakfast food, so I chose eggs over medium, bacon and toast. Helen had an omelette with hash browns. We were quiet as we ate but as we finished, Helen pipped up, "Wes, we're going to see a friend of mine who's an oncologist and orthopedic surgeon as well. He's got your MRI pics and will see us in 30 minutes, he's just down the road so we got plenty of time." I wasn't focused on her information as I was definitely in a gloomy mood. She laid her hand on mine, "Wes, I know this is a lot, but we all are here for you, Myself, Anna, the boys... We all love you, so let's attack this like you do everything else, it's important that you get your mojo back, it will help during recovery and I'm sure you're gonna be fine in the end, this growth, if malignant has a 84% recovery rate, so it's pretty positive that you'll bounce back, so get your head up and let's tackle this!" I looked up at her and though my eyes were a bit misty, I squeezed her hand and smiled, "Ok Helen, I'm ready, and thank you for what you're doing for me, I appreciate you so much." Helen smiled broadly, "I'm not doing this for you, I'm selfish, and my son needs you, so I have motivation!" We both laughed and she leaned over and kissed my cheek, "I see why Noah loves you, why Jai, Peter and Lyn love you too, you're a pretty special guy Wes and I intend to save your ass for all those boys, so let's get going!" We headed out towards 101 and two exits down we veered off and headed west and in 3 blocks we were at a modern looking clinic. We got out and let the valet park the rental and headed inside. Helen spoke with the front desk and the lady advised us that Dr. Feng was waiting on us. We went up to the third floor and as the elevator door opened, a tall, rather young looking Asian man in a lab coat was standing there, "Helen! You look wonderful as usual! I see Seattle is doing you some good!" Helen kissed his cheek, "Todd, you are a charmer, if I wasn't a lesbian and you weren't married, I'd definitely date you!" They both laughed and then Helen made the introductions. Dr. Feng interrupted her, "Mr. Grainger needs no introduction, I'm very aware of who he is, he and I have mutual friends in Asia..." We shook hands and I asked who is our mutual friend. Todd smiled, "Dr. Graham in Manila, he was one of my professors in medical school, we go back a bit, by the way, great work on the Children's hospital, much impressed by your generosity." We talked for a few more minutes when Todd changed into his professional mode, "Ok, let's go into my surgery and I want a look see at this growth." I looked at Helen with a quizzical look, "Relax Wes, he's Asian, surgery is an exam room." He had me get into a surgical gown and then I was directed to lay on the exam table. Todd put on latex gloves and proceeded to poke and prod, then checked my lymph nodes, after maybe 20 minutes of the exam, Todd looked at me, "I want to get you into surgery today Wes, I need a biopsy, but as it's attached to a bone, I really want to remove it completely, once I have it analyzed, we will discuss treatment alternatives, so, if Helen can assist me and a anesthesiologist, we can do this in an hour or less, it's fairly small, it's close to the surface and other than some stitches, you will heal quickly, so, are you ready?" I looked at Helen, she nodded and squeezed my hand. I looked over at Todd, "Let's do this, I've got a busy life and I've been idle for too long already." The procedure really only lasted 45 minutes, When I woke up, Helen was sitting by my bedside texting someone. "Helen, I need water please, my throat is so dry...." Helen stood up and poured me a sip cup of water, "It's because of the oxygen while you were in surgery, you'll be up and out of here pretty soon, and I'll take you home." Just then, Todd came in, "Ah! My patient is alive, how unusual!" Helen punched his shoulder, "Easy Todd, this guy is like my Brother!" We all laughed then Todd cleared his throat, "I know this is preliminary, and we will wait for the lab results, but I'm pretty positive that the growth is benign, I've seen malignant tumors and this one doesn't have the tell-tell signs, I'm gonna prescribe an antibiotic for now, and I'll have the results within 2 days, so for now, go home, rest and keep it clean and dry. I'm sure your evil Sister will stick around til I call." Helen helped me get up and after I pee'd I was allowed to leave the clinic, but was taken downstairs in a wheelchair which annoyed me and made Helen laugh. We grabbed the rental and headed towards home. Helen drives like a maniac so I'm wide awake the whole ride. It's almost 6pm when we get to the gate. I hear my phone chirp as we pull up the drive, Noah states that they are just getting on 101 and Anna said they'd be home in 45 minutes. Helen grabs my phone and sends a text that Wes is in bed and not to be disturbed until tomorrow morning. Noah sends a sad face emoji and we head inside. In very little time I'm in bed, Helen is downstairs making some chicken noodle soup and after devouring the soup, I'm dowsing off. I hear the boys and Anna arrive, but I'm exhausted and drift off to sleep. Morning arrives and Helen is waking me up for juice and a rather large pill. I choke it down and after checking my dressing, she allows me a potty trip, then back to bed, but allowed to watch the news and look at my emails. Anna came up and brought me a breakfast of oatmeal and fruit, a large steaming cup of Kona and a kiss on the cheek. I was left alone til after lunch. Helen came in with Peter and Lyn first, both boys were very sweet and caring as they both wanted to hold my good hand for a few minutes and both were glad to see me awake and looking better than up at the cabin. Peter and Lyn both kissed my cheek before changing places with Jai and Noah. The two older boys were more reserved and quietly spoke to me. Jai stayed for a bit, but figured he'd better keep the two younger boys busy today, so after a quick kiss, he left. Noah moved to my good side and held my hand and the troubled look in his eyes was hard not to see, "Noah, it's gonna be ok, Dr Feng is pretty sure it's not bad cancer and I should be good in a few days, so just relax and let's just have a good day, ok?" Noah looked at me, I was smiling which allayed some of his fears, he leaned in to kiss my cheek, but I turned in towards him and kissed his lips. "God! I missed you Noah, it's been hard not seeing you." Noah pecked my nose, "I've missed you too Wes, I was so scared the last couple of days, I guess I got used to being near you so much, that my heart hurt when I wasn't sleeping with you or just talking to you, you better get better, cuz I need you for a long time!" I laughed, "I think I need you more, but I hope to be here for a long time, so let's stay positive, ok?" Noah stayed with me til supper time and was escorted out by his Mother, I felt better already, but Helen said one more day of bed rest before I was allowed downstairs. Noah snuck in before bed and we cuddled for a few minutes until I heard Helen yelling for the boys. Noah kissed me, then quickly left the room. It was around 9 o'clock, I had been watching a Hallmark Christmas movie when I heard tapping at my door, "Come in!" The door opened and I could see that everyone of them was standing there, they all had the most gawd awful Christmas sweaters on and various types of holiday hats on, or reindeer antlers and elf ears on. I just kinda started laughing as they piled into my room. It suddenly dawned on me that today was Christmas Eve! The boys all sat on the edges of the bed as Helen spoke. "Noah and I have a tradition in our lives that on Christmas Eve, we open one special gift each before going to bed, I think I'd like to continue this with my new family members here today. Anna and I have helped the boys chose gifts for each other and left them with Jai to choose for the adults. Tonight, we let them decide who they wanted to get a gift on Christmas Eve and apparently they all chose you Wes, not surprisingly, they love you and want to shower you with gifts tonight." Anna pulled a red bag out from behind her and started pulling out wrapped boxes. Anna handed them to each boy and Lyn was the first to hand me a package. "Merry Christmas Daddy, I love you!" I pulled him over to me and asked him to help me unwrap it. It was a picture in a frame of him and I , he was on my shoulders and the look of joy on his face was so moving! I actually (surprisingly) teared up. It was the trip to Great America and his gift to me was priceless. I hugged him tightly, this is beautiful Lyn, this will look perfect on my office wall, I'll see it everyday!" Anna spoke up, "Lyn picked this picture himself, said it is his favorite picture of you and him." I kissed his chubby cheeks, "Thank you Lyn, it's just perfect!" Lyn kissed me back and scooted off the bed. Peter was next, he handed me a gift he'd apparently wrapped himself as the use of tape was pretty liberal! When I opened it, I was shocked, it was a silver bracelet with just a date on it. It was the day that we adopted each other! Peter was pretty wet eyed as I rubbed the engraving, "Oh, Peter! This is beautiful and it will always mean so much to me as you mean so much to me, thank you!" We exchanged kisses and he wished me a Merry Christmas. Jai sat on the edge of the bed and handed me his gift, "Merry Christmas Dad, after our discussion last week, I really thought about what you said about the magic of Christmas, and it's true, I think there's a lot of that around this family!" I opened the package and it was a book, not just any book, but an illustrated version of "The Night Before Christmas" "Jai! This is awesome! You really listened! I can't wait to read this to all of you, I think it's gonna be another tradition for Christmases to come! Thank you!!" Jai leaned in and kissed my cheek, "Merry Christmas Dad, thank you for making me believe..." Noah sat on the edge of the bed, "Merry Christmas Wes, I hope you like it!" I began to open the gift, but stopped, "It is awesome that you all have been so thoughtful about your gift giving, I'm sure it'll be perfect." His was a small box, but about 8 inches long. As predicted, it was perfect. It was a gold necklace with a very thin, finely turned heart with two birthstones embedded on the gold, I realized that one was mine and the other was his, "Oh my, this is beautiful Noah, I will treasure this forever! Help me put this on." Noah hooked the clasp and I put it on my chest and placed my hand on it as i kissed his cheek, "Thank you Noah, I love it!" "Merry Christmas Wes, I'm glad you like it, Mom said you would, but I picked it out!" I turned to all the boys, "I am so happy, you boys all did so good, and each one was well thought out, which says so much to me, I'm overwhelmed by your love, thank you and Merry Christmas!" Anna cleared her throat, "Excuse me, but we're not done, Helen and I still have to give you our gifts!" I looked puzzled, "Anna, you and Helen don't need to give me gifts, you both are gifts in my life." Anna handed me a large rectangular box, "Save your thanks til after you open the gift...." Hers was light, so I figured a shirt or something, I was right in something! It was a Christmas Sweater! It was very loud and had gold thread and red wool. Santa and his sleigh with reindeer! "Oh my goodness! I think it's another tradition! This is hideous Anna, I love it!!" The boys were chanting, "Put it on! Put it on!" So with Helen's help I donned the sweater and everyone cheered. "Thank you Anna, it is perfect for our occasion, I love it and you!" Helen was last, the boys separated to give her some room. She handed me a box that was heavy, I asked her to help me as my shoulder was pretty tender. We ripped off the wrappings and I opened the box to reveal five framed pictures. One of each of the boys and one group picture that included Anna and Helen, all were professionally done and all of them were in their "Sunday best." "Oh! These are fantastic! When did you find time to do these? " Helen and Anna looked at each other, "We are women Wes, we have our sneaky ways, plus you went on a overnight trip remember?" I laughed at them, "You are absolutely correct Anna, and I'm glad you are, these are going up in the living room as soon as I can swing a hammer!" Anna and Helen excused themselves for a minute and the boys all sat on the edge of the bed, all talking at once, but I let them as their excitement was addictive and it made me happy to see them like this, like a family, everyone of mine are social butterflies, no shy about them when it's all of us together. Helen and Anna came in bearing Hot Chocolate and Gingerbread cookies. The chatter got louder as the boys smelled food, like sharks to a feeding frenzy! As we sipped our chocolate, Jai spoke up, "Dad, I know we have to go to bed in a few, but can you read the story now?" "Excellent idea Jai, ok everyone, settle down and you ladies, please sit down so we can finish our Christmas Eve traditions by reading this story." I won't bore you with the specifics, but the boys were rapt in their attention as I read the story in a slightly un-posh British accent, which caused Helen and Anna to giggle like little school girls. As I finished the story and closed the book, the boys were pretending to hear hooves on the roof, Lyn was yawning and I could see Peter was tired too, "Ok, boys, the festivities are over for tonight, please go brush your teeth and then come see me before going off to bed." The boys all put their cups on Anna's tray and thanked her and Helen for the snack, then headed off to brush their teeth. I was alone with Anna and Helen for a brief moment, "Relax Wes, we have the gifts under control, we had them shipped on the same flight and Manny used his catering van to bring them up. Helen and I will make sure the gifts are ready, you get some sleep and it will be an early wake up if I know your boys." Both women kissed my cheek and headed downstairs. The boys came in together, Noah and Jai stood back as Peter and Lyn said their good nights, both boys got hugs and kisses, then headed for bed. Jai was next, "Thank you Dad for reading the story, you made it pretty cool!" I smiled, "Thank you for your gift and for contributing to our Christmas traditions, you are turning out to be one heck of a Son, I love you Jai, go get some sleep ok?" Jai hugged me and kissed my cheek, "Good night Dad and Merry Christmas!" Noah waited til Jai left, he moved to my good side and we cuddled for a bit. Noah sighed, "This has been a crazy week, but in the end, it's been the best holiday I've ever had, You, Mom, Anna and my Brothers, it's been awesome! Thank you Wes for all you've done for me, for all of us!" He kissed my cheek and I hugged him tightly, "You can sleep here tonight love, but no hanky panky, ok?" Noah smiled brightly, "I don't know what that means, but I just wanna lay here with you tonight, I've missed you." I dimmed the lights and in a very short time, I heard Noah's cute little snore, he was out cold. I lay there a few minutes just reviewing the day's events and shook my head, it had been a roller coaster and yet, everyone was happy and laughing tonight and the bond between us was large and thriving! As I fell asleep, I felt Noah assume his usual position, face in my neck and leg draped over me. All was good in the world. Helen woke me at 7am, none of the boys stirred yet, I quietly brushed my teeth, washed my face and dressed in pajama bottoms and a long sleeve t-shirt and headed downstairs. Anna was in the kitchen, she handed me a steaming mug, "Helen and I got 3 hours sleep, did you have to buy everything on the internet?" We both laughed but I had to explain, "This is our first Christmas together, and I want them boys to remember it for a lifetime, hell, I want to remember it too!" Anna, patted my good shoulder, "I think these boys are going to remember this season for a long time, you've no need to worry, those boys are so happy, especially after coming home to see you, I can honestly say, I've never had four boys all crying at once when you were sent off in the ambulance, Jai was beside himself with grief and it took all I had to calm them down." I was kinda shocked, "I didn't realize Anna, I just assumed they were ok." Anna smiled, "It's no surprise to me Wes, those boys adore you, they love you more than anyone, so when you're not ok, they won't be either, they are young boys and need you here at all times." I understood her meaning and just hugged her, she surprised me by hugging me tight. (Wait! Did I just hear a sniffle from Anna??) She turned quickly and began preparing breakfast, "Go sit in the great room, Helen is waking the boys now." I patted her back, "Merry Christmas Anna, you do know that I and the boys love you? Yes?" Anna turned around, her eyes still held traces of her tears, "Yes, I do know, and I love all of you more than you may know, your illness effected all of us and I'm glad things are better now, for the boys, and even me." She pecked my cheek and shoo'd me off. I had a moment of silence in the Great room, the Christmas tree was lit beautifully, Helen and Anna had outdone themselves on decorating and the boy's gifts were wrapped and bows were abundant! I sipped my coffee and the silence was shattered by four very noisy boys racing down the staircase. "Merry Christmas boys!" The boys all stopped at the bottom of the stairs and I guess the sight before them was a bit overwhelming. I actually had to break their trance like state, "Come, sit down by me please, once we're all in here, we will hand out the gifts". The boys quickly sat near me as Anna and Helen entered the room. The boys greeted them by loudly saying "Merry Christmas!" Anna and Helen dolled out kisses and hugs to the boys and myself. "Helen, would you and Jai hand out the gifts? Anna, come sit by me, you work too hard." Anna shrugged and sat near me. The first gifts were to Anna from the boys, Anna couldn't hide her tears as the boys lavished much love her way and as she opened each gift, she complimented the boys on their thoughtfulness. The last gift to her was from me, I'd say I was pretty sneaky in my own way as she was shocked at the gift. I'd snuck a pic of her surrounded by the boys, she was all smiles and you could tell the boys were very attentive in the picture. I'd had it professionally done with a beautiful mahogany wood frame. Anna was rubbing the edge of the picture as she let her guard down, a tear trickled down her cheek, "oh my Wes, you've gotten me twice today already, this is so beautiful, I will cherish this forever, my beautiful boys and I, bless you Wes." I handed her a tissue, "Merry Christmas Grandma Anna, the boys and I truly love you!" The boys all agreed loudly and Peter and Lyn jumped up and kissed her. The gift giving lasted quite some time, the boys were astounded at the gifts, each had a meaning behind it and the boys were very thankful for each gift. The Santa gifts were last, and the largest. Lyn cried as his piano was revealed, it was brought in by 4 of Manny's guys late last night and was set up perfectly near the corner by the fireplace. Lyn stood at the keyboard and rubbed the ivories for a very long time. Needless to say, I am certain that it was a Christmas they all would remember, as would I, the ups and downs of the holiday, the love shown by each and everyone, the giving, the new traditions.... It was definitely a memorable time. I was sitting in my chair, listening to the boys talking and how each treated the others as equals and it wasn't forced, it was effortless. My pride was showing on my face and Anna patted my leg and pointed at the boys, "Even though they have no trace of your DNA, they are the spitting image of you Wes, you are making a difference to these boys, I'm proud of you." Happy tears filled my eyes... Damn! Anna got me back! TBC..... Sorry guys, no racy scenes this chapter. I hope those of you have been reading this story understand that depth of story comes first, but I'm sure things will heat up on the next chapter. Thanks to those that have sent me emails in regards to Noah and other stories I've placed on Nifty. Wes
