"That's a car, that's a car." Davy called out, rushing for the door. I stopped him, "Davy Gethin asked me to keep everyone here. He wants to speak to us all before he brings them in." "But..." "Davy, no buts." ********************** Operation Pied Piper – Part 128d "The truth is rarely pure, and never simple." Oscar Wilde Athol takes up the story Davy glared at me and rushed back to the window. "They are just getting out of the car," he shouted, peering out into the early morning light. I could see Harding, Marcus and Robert were nearly as desperate to see their loved ones as Davy. I watched the door... 'Come on Gethin'. Five minutes passed before there was a gentle knock, Gethin poked his head in, then entered. He was in full uniform and wearing his gold braid covered flat cap. Davy ran at him, throwing his arms round him, practically knocking his hat off as he grabbed him. "Gethin, is Forts okay? Athol won't let me go and see him." Davy was sobbing, barely able to get the words out. Gethin hugged him and kissed him, "Davy, come on. Forts is back and safe. You will have to pull yourself together. They have all been through a lot. He doesn't need to see you this upset on top of all that's happened." Davy nodded and took out his hankie. "Sorry... I have been just so worried. Then, hearing you had to come here..." He noisily blew his nose. Gethin hugged him and ruffled hair, "Now, can you wait for a moment more? I quickly need to speak to Athol and Professor Harding. Then I will tell you all what's been happening. Okay? it will only be a few minutes before I fetch them in." Davy nodded. Gethin gestured for Harding and me to follow him out into the corridor. I felt my self-exhaling, what was he going to tell us? I closed the door behind me. Gethin looked at me, "I have put them all in the prefect common room, Mr Evans is sitting with them." I nodded. He turned to Harding. "I am afraid Chris is in a bit of a state. His uncle shot himself in the head in front of him. I think it is wise if you go straight to him." Harding visibly paled and staggered, "Oh my God. Certainly, where is he?" "Athol, would you take Professor Harding down? Maybe then move them to another room. Now, I am sorry, but I have to swear you both to secrecy about anything you hear. I am going to ask all of you to sign the Official Secrets Act later. None of this can come out." It was my turn, "God, Gethin, what's happened to them?" "Athol, I promise I will tell you everything. But first let's take the Professor to Chris, then we can go back to the staffroom." "Yes, of course." I led Con and Gethin down to the prefect common room and popped my head in. Forts was sitting with his arm round Chris. Dima was just starting at the floor, Denis and Rhys sitting quietly beside him. We all went in, Gethin and his brother, Rhys, nodded to each other by way of acknowledgement. Forts stood, and tears rolled down his cheeks. I embraced him, pulling him tightly to me. "Dad... " He began sobbing loudly as he buried his face into my neck. As Con sat down next to Chris, Chris threw his arms round him, sobbing, "I couldn't stop him... I just couldn't stop him." I glanced at Dima and Denis. "Chaps, Gethin just wants to talk to everyone and then I will come and get you..." Forts pulled away from me and went to Dima, putting his arm round him. "Hear that, Robert is waiting to see you?" Dima nodded, his Royal stoicism was amazing. How he was holding himself together was unbelievable. "Denis, Marcus is up waiting for you, too." He nodded and mouthed, "thank you." Harding was still hugging Chris, kissing and stroking his head. He glanced up at me, shaking his head, then helped Chris up, "Come on, let's go next door and we can talk." Chris nodded, tears streaming down his face. "Athol, we had better get back to the staff room. As soon as I cover the formalities everyone can be reunited." I nodded. I kissed Forts cheek, "It won't be long. Davy can't wait to see you." He wiped his eyes and forced a smile. "I can't wait." "Rhys, are you okay for another few minutes?" Rhys nodded. Gethin and I hurried back to the staffroom. Gethin's staff officer was waiting in the corridor, clutching a bundle of papers. Gethin barely glanced at him, "Bring those with you." Everyone stood as we went in. All eyes were focused on us. "Now, I want you all to sit down. Gethin has something to explain to us all before we bring Forts, Dima and Denis in." Gethin stated, "Chaps, before I can tell you anything, I am going to have to get you all to sign the Official Secrets Act of 1911. If you refuse, I am afraid I am going to have to ask you to leave." Archie was first out of his chair, "Where do I sign?" Davy leapt up nodding, "Me too." "Chaps, I know you are desperate to see everyone, but this is serious. By signing these papers, if you were to reveal anything I say to anyone, you would find yourself imprisoned, and now that we are at war, probably hanged. I want you to be very clear about that." The room listened in silence. "Well?" All of us agreed to sign. Gethin smiled, "Right, I hope you're all sitting comfortably, it is a bit of a long and involved story. But you need to hear it all to fully understand just what the chaps have been through." I could see Davy and well, to be honest, all of us just wanted to see the four of them. But from what Gethin was saying, it was obviously important that we heard the whole story. He began, "Okay... none of you will have been aware there has been in Britain a movement or should I call it a plot, involving certain members of the aristocracy here to remove Churchill, King George the sixth and make peace with Germany. "God that's treason. Forts wasn't involved in this, was he?" Davy suddenly looked very worried. "Davy, hang on, let me finish. Anyway, the Earl of Algin was recruited into this plot. You are all aware that McPhee's uncle seemed desperate to meet Forts. Hang on, to make the story make more sense, I should probably call him, His Imperial Highness, the Grand Duke Drageon Drageonivanov Romanov, one of the heirs to the Russian Throne. Apparently, after Germany defeated France, they came into contact with a member of a very rich and aristocratic Imperial Russian family, a guy called Prince Helix Vassiiliov." Davy raised his hand, "Wasn't he involved in the death of Rasputin, the monk? His name seems familiar." Gethin nodded, "Yes, that's right... Now don't side-track me. All this is confusing enough." He winked and then continued. "As you can probably guess, all these aristocrats are related, no offense, Athol..." Gethin chuckled, "Albeit mostly distantly... Prince Vassiiliov convinced the Germans that if they approached Forts... er, Drageon and they could convince him to join the conspiracy, he could put a lot of pressure on the British government and with another senior British royal, lead the plot here. By way of an idea to entice Drageon to join the conspiracy, they decided they would offer to restore him to the throne of Russia once the Bolsheviks were defeated by the combined Allied and German armies." "Make Forts Tsar?" Davy gasped. Gethin nodded, "Good, it sounds like you're following me, okay." "The lads' trip to Balmoral was seized upon by the government to get the Secret Service and the King to warn Forts and make him aware of the plot. And indeed, along with it, they hoped Forts involvement would bring out the head of the plot in Britain. This was where it got complicated. Forts, on hearing the plan and that they wanted him to pretend to join it, was adamant he didn't want to be involved and had no desire to become Tsar. I am sorry to say, they threatened to arrest and intern him and all of you, in fact, if he didn't help them. They also ordered him not to tell the others, Dima, McPhee, and Denis." "The King threatened him? Oh, God." Davy was sat shaking his head. Gethin nodded. "So, to continue. Poor Forts didn't know who he could trust. It was unforgiveable, actually. I have already made an official complaint... When the chaps arrived at the Earl of Algin, all the phones in the house had been removed. That was why Forts couldn't ring you and talk to you, Davy. Poor Forts couldn't even find out the name of the place he was staying. Chris, bless him, couldn't remember the name of the house, not that it would have made any difference. The Conspirators had the place locked down totally. Once Forts was there, the plan kicked into action. The Secret Service had an agent embedded in the Earl's staff. He revealed himself to Forts, warning him again to act like he was in full agreement with the plan. Prince Vassiiliov arrived by boat from France, the Germans, by plane to a grass landing strip on the house grounds. Vassiiliov introduced Forts to two senior SS Officers, who spoke to him and Dima. They offered Forts exactly what the King told him they would. Forts, as ordered, agreed." "Threatened. He was THREATENED." Davy sobbed, "I want to see him." Gethin went and sat on the arm of Davy's chair. "In a minute, let me finish the story... The following night, they held a reception, all the conspirators from across the country attended, along with the leader of the plot in Britain. Forts was declared Tsar Nicholas the third, and he was greeted by the future King." Davy did ask, "But who was it? Which King?" Gethin shook his head. "Davy. I am not prepared to reveal that. All I can say is watch out for any new announcements. Then put two and two together. To finish off, once the head of the plot publicly revealed himself, the Secret Service moved in. The plane carrying the Germans was shot down as it took off. Vassiiliov was, well, captured and returned to France." This time it was Archie who scoffed, "Returned to France? Why not SHOT?" "Unfortunately, it is viewed that Vassiiliov may yet prove useful to the Secret Service." Archie shook his head, "For Christ's sake!" "After Forts left and was back in his room. Chris remained sitting, unnoticed, in the room where the reception had taken place, where he overheard the conspirators talking about the plan. Until then, it is obvious he knew nothing about his uncle's involvement. The Secret Service agent, Masters, who had been masquerading as a butler, confronted the Earl of Algin and offered him the 'Gentlemen's way out'. The Earl of Algin agreed and shot himself in the head, as Chris begged him not to." "Poor Chris." "That's why I had Harding go straight to him. Poor chap is in a bit of a state. So, there you go, the poor chaps have had a terrible time all told." Gethin glanced round the room as his staff officer collected in the signed forms. "Any more questions?... Davy raised his hand, "I have one, how did you get involved?" "Luckily, I am friends with the Duke of Kent, the king's brother, George. I believe he met you at the Grand Duke's funeral, Davy? Well, he met Forts at Balmoral, heard about the plan and was concerned for him. He had rung me about the same time Callum did." "Callum?" Gethin nodded, ruffling Davy's hair once more. "He sends his love... Callum had received what he considered to be a strange request to provide fighters over the Earl of Algin's home. I put it all together and made further enquiries. I insisted I would run the operation from the RAF side and went to the house. I knew Forts would be pleased to see a familiar face." Davy took Gethin's hand, "Thank you." "So, there it is. Now you know the whole sorry tale... Any other questions?" Everyone shook their heads. Gethin stood, "Okay, I will go and get them." * I got up and went with him. We went back to the Prefect Common room. "Okay chaps, they all now know the story. Not the bit about you know who... and I am afraid you cannot tell them ever." Forts swallowed, "You didn't tell Davy about the two German soldiers in my room, did you?" Gethin shook his head. "No. I should have, it's not as if you did anything to be ashamed of." "Dad?" "I won't say anything Forts, don't worry." Gethin winked, "Everyone ready?" ** Davy takes up the story. We all stood watching the door. It slowly opened, Forts was the first one in. I stood, my bottom lip trembling as I tried to keep control. I could barely see him through my tear-filled eyes. He walked straight over to me and embraced me. His oh so familiar shape growing bigger as he got closer. He wrapped his arms round me and kissed me on the lips. "Oh, Davy." I kissed him back hard, holding on to him tightly. "You're never leaving me again... And what's with this beard?" He chuckled and carried on kissing me. Both of us were oblivious to everyone else in the room. ** Marcus takes up the story I ran over to Denis as he came through the door. He blushed as I grabbed him. "Hey, I am okay. I only had a bit part." "I am sure you didn't," He laughed and wiped away the tear rolling down my cheek. "Seriously... But I did learn a few tricks off the valets at Balmoral, for quickly folding sheets." He winked. "Shut up and hug me. I love you." He smiled, "I love you too." ** Robert takes up the story I wasn't sure what to expect with Dima. I had never met anyone like him for suppressing his emotions. He entered behind Forts. He looked straight at me, he bit his lip and gave a little smile. He walked straight over to me and put his arms round me. He pulled back, looked into my eyes and mouthed, "I love you." Then kissed me. I leant into his ear, "Ya toze tebya lublu." (I love you too) That was when his lip went and his chest began to heave, as tears began to roll down his cheeks. ** Archie takes up the story It had all been really emotional, even for Athol and me. Eventually I got to hug each of them and we all sat together and drained the whisky decanter. I don't know what time exactly, but the door opened and Harding came in with McPhee. Poor Chris looked dreadful. "Chaps, Chris and I are going to head up to our room, but he wanted to come and say thank you to you all again." Each of us got up and gave Chris a hug in turn. He didn't speak, just nodded. ** Davy takes up the story once more I sat holding on to Forts' arm. Gethin came over and got down on his knees in front of us. "How are you two now?" I reached out to take his hand, then noticed the blood stain on both the cuff of his white shirt and his RAF Tunic. "Gethin, you have blood on you." He glanced down and took a breath, "Ah, yes, I had to go to Chris, he was refusing to let go of his uncle's body... It must have happened then." Forts looked up and mouthed, "Thank you for looking after him." Forts squeezed my hand, "Can we go to bed now? I want to snuggle up to you." I just nodded. We said good night to everyone and headed to our apartment. Once there, Forts went over to Draco's cot and leant in and kissed him. ** Forts takes up the story later that afternoon Davy wasn't happy with me. But I had agreed on the way back to meet Dima and McPhee that afternoon and go for a ride together. We needed to talk. Dima and I made our way to Chris and Harding's room. Chris met us at the door. I got the impression that Harding wasn't sure it was a good idea, but Chris was determined. As we made our way down the staircase, I saw Gethin standing at the bottom. "Hello chaps." I gave him a hug, "Hi Gethin." He smiled at Dima and Chris, who both said hello. "Chaps, do you mind if I join you?" "I didn't know you could ride, but sure, it would be good to have you along." So, the four of us made our way down towards the stables. Gethin and I were slightly ahead of the other two. "How are you Forts?" "So, so. I still don't really believe it all happened to be honest." "No. It was all a bit surreal. I had a quick word with Professor Harding this morning. He thinks you may need to give Chris a bit of reassurance. He kept saying he put you in danger and how stupid he must be, not to have suspected anything." "I will speak to him. It is good you are coming with us. A four means one of us is not left out." Gethin nodded. I thought for a moment, "The thing is, Gethin, the more I think about it, their whole plan was nonsense. Whatever made them think I could get the government to change side and attack Russia? It was crazy from the start." Gethin nodded. "Possibly, but you saw how many members of the aristocracy were involved and how high up it went." I looked down, "Davy wants me to tell him who it was that was at the head." "Forts, you must not do that... Promise me." "I do." * We soon had the horses saddled up. Pegasus seemed pleased to see me, as always. McPhee smiled for the first time in hours as Hunter nuzzled into him. Dima was still very quiet though. We headed off into the surrounding countryside, Gethin mouthed at me, "Speak to Dima. I will stay with McPhee." I nodded and indicated for Dima to come alongside me. "Are you okay, my friend?" Dima shrugged. I gave him a smile, "Come on. I never wanted to be Tsar, anyway." He smiled, then his face became serious, "I am sorry Forts. I think I got swept along by it all. I still can't understand how they got Vassiiliov involved in it. I think that was what made me think it was worth going for." I nodded and winked, "You should have seen your face though when those SS generals appeared." He grinned and nodded. "The thing was, I couldn't understand why you seemed to accept their presence so easily... Of course, I didn't know you had been spoken to and warned." He chuckled, then shook his head, "I was a fool. I am sorry. I will understand if you want to find another advisor. I am not sure I am cut out for being one." I pulled Pegasus to a stop. "Dima, no. You are my friend. I want you next to me." Dima got quite emotional. I manoeuvred Pegasus close, so I was right next to him, "Give me a hug. I love you, my brother." I am sure those horses knew Dima and I were having a 'moment'. They didn't move an inch while we embraced. I glanced back, Gethin smiled and nodded at me supportively. Now McPhee. "Chris, let's see how fast Hunter is. Race you to the wall." I knew, no matter what his mood, McPhee could never turn down a challenge. He pulled Hunter up alongside me as Dima joined Gethin. "Ready, GO!" McPhee cried out as he took off across the field. "Hang on, you cheat." I called out after him as I turned Pegasus to at least face the right direction. Chris and Hunter beat me and Pegasus to the wall. Chris was clapping Hunter's neck, praising him. "See, I knew you could beat him." I just laughed, "You cheated." "Ah, if you weren't ready, that was not my fault." I jumped down from Pegasus, Chris joined me on the ground. I looked him in the eye, "Come on, give me a hug. I love you, my friend." "Forts... but." I stopped him. "McPhee, you weren't to know. I only wish I could have warned you all and Jules, I know he meant a lot to you." McPhee pulled a stalk of grass and began chewing on it as he stared over the wall into the next field. "That's the funny thing, Forts. As a kid, I loved to spend time with him. He was always so much more fun than my dad... I just couldn't get my head round things... Like when you asked about the phones... Of course, he had a telephone... but that wasn't all... I couldn't believe it when he separated us all... and then you being proclaimed Tsar Nicolas the third." He tossed the piece of grass over the wall. "At least he did the honourable thing." "Chris. I am sorry, I wasn't with you... maybe..." Chris turned to me, "No Forts... It wouldn't have made any difference. He knew the game was up." McPhee thought for a moment, "Did Gethin tell you what happened to the arse Vassiiliov?" "He was dumped back in France by a British motorboat. Let him explain to the Nazis how he got back." "Forts, I am so sorry for letting you down." I grabbed him and kissed his cheek, "Chris. You are with Dima, my best and most trusted friend. It was me who let you all down. I knew what was going on and said nothing... It is me who should be saying sorry." Chris winked. Then leapt up on to Hunter's back, "Last one to the next wall is a 'Mary'" and he took off like the wind. * When we arrived back, Davy was waiting with Draco in his pram and Vlad. Gethin, "I don't think you have met Father Vladimir." Gethin smiled, "Pleased to meet you. I hear you have been a tremendous pillar of strength for Davy while Forts was away. Thank you for looking after him. It is not only Forts who thinks a lot of him." Davy's face suddenly changed, "Err Gethin, what are you doing on a horse? You can't ride." He laughed, "No, and I hate the bloody things. But sometimes we have to do things for the greater good." Davy came over and grabbed the reins, "Well, get off before you fall off." * Gethin couldn't stay any longer. He was summoned away. I was sorry Davy didn't get much time alone with him. I would make sure we made it up to all of them once this bloody war was over. After dinner, we were all sitting in the staffroom. Athol had put the radio on. I had berated him, laughing, "You're just a news fiend." He shooshed me. 'This is the BBC News at six o'clock. Good evening, it has been announced that the Duke of Windsor, who had been visiting Great Britain, is to return to continue his position as the Governor of the Bahamas for the duration of the war... German forces have continued...' Davy looked at me and gasped. I stood, nodded and walked over and switched the radio off. ********************** Folks, I really hope you're enjoying the story.
